1 Stanly County 4-H 2016 Summer Blast
2 Cloverbuds: Ages 5-8 Fun with Flowers Tuesday, June 21 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm Participants will learn about the basics of floral design by creating a floral arrangement to take home. They will learn concepts of balance, scale, complimentary colors and how to maintain fresh flowers. Fun in the Forest Tuesday, June 28 9:00 am- 11:00 pm Cost: $10 Class limit: 15 Participants will learn the story of Smokey the Bear and the importance of the paper industry to North Carolina. Youth will also have the opportunity to make their own paper and make another fun craft! Cloverbud Painting Monday, June 27 10:00 am- 12:00 pm Cost: $20 Class limit: 15 Participants will receive step by step instruction to create a beautiful 8x10 painting to take home. Fun with Foods Wednesday, July 6 Cost: $10 Class limit: 12 Kids will learn cooking basics while making fun recipes during this hands- on class. Recipes will include: Breakfast Banana Splits, Personal Pizzas, and Apple Pie Bites! Fun with 4- H Thursday, July 14 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm Explore the wonderful world of 4- H! Participants will learn about Stanly County 4- H programs, take part in team building exercises, create a no sew blanket and a terrarium to take home!
3 Ages 9-12 Sewing 101 June Cost: $25 Class limit: 12 Learn the Basics of sewing in this beginner sewing camp. Youth will learn about sewing tools, how to use a sewing machine, patterns and sewing basics while making their very own drawstring backpack! Robotics Wednesday, June 22 8:30 am- 4:00 pm Cost: $20 Class limit: 12 Participants will travel to the Rowan County Cooperative Extension office to learn the basics of Lego Mindstorm NXT Robots. Participants will build a basic robot and learn some basic concepts of programming robots. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch. Lazy 5 Ranch- Mooresville Wednesday, June 29 8:30 am- 2:00 pm Cost: $20 Class limit: 18 Participants will travel to Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville to visit with exotic animals. Admission includes horse drawn wagon ride through the ranch and feed for our furry friends. Emus, zebras, and camels, oh my! We will also have a short craft after we return to the Agri- Civic Center. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch, wear comfortable shoes and sunblock. Magic of Electricity Thursday, June 30 2:00-4:00 pm Participants will learn the basics of electricity and a simple circuit board. Each participant will learn how to safely assemble and solder a 4- H Electric kit. This class will be held at Stanly Community College. Latta Plantation and UNC- C Botanical Gardens Tuesday, July 5 9:00 am- 4:00 pm Cost: $20 Class limit: 18 At the first stop of the day youth will explore the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens. We will then travel to the historic Latta Plantation for a guided tour. Youth will also make their own candles and learn about the farm animals at Latta Plantation. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch and wear comfortable clothes and closed toe walking shoes.
4 Ages 9-12 Perfect Pizzas Thursday, July 7 Cost: $10 Class limit: 12 Youth will make homemade dough, marinara sauce and add toppings for individual pizzas. We will end the day by making a desert pizza for campers to enjoy! Scrumptious Sushi Friday, July 8 Cost: $15 Class limit: 12 Youth will prepare a variety of ingredients and learn to roll their own sushi in this fun class. Participants will take home a bamboo mat and recipes for making sushi at home! A Life of Science Monday, July 11 8:30 am- 3:00 pm Cost: $10 Class limit: 18 Participants will experience three applications of life sciences. First, a visit to the Wildlife Refuge where students will meet Forest and Wildlife management professionals and talk about ecosystems. Second, a soil science lab with hands- on activities. Lastly, participants will conduct part of a real University research project to identify natural antibiotics. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch and wear closed toe shoes! The Dirt on Soils Wednesday, July 13 9:00 am - 1:00 pm This workshop is all about dirt! Participants will learn what exactly is in dirt and why soil health is so important. After making a Mason jar terrarium to take home, youth will enjoy a picnic- style lunch and make their own soil- layers dessert. Make sure to bring a sample of soil from home to analyze under the microscope! 4- H Investigates, CSI Camp July :15 am- 4:45 pm Cost: $45 Class limit: 12 Participants will travel to Iredell County to learn about forensic techniques such as fingerprint, DNA and hair analysis, impression analysis for tire and shoes, blood splatter and blood typing (synthetic blood will be used) with 4- Her s from several other counties. They will also visit the Iredell County Court House and jail, as well as visit the police training virtual firing range at Mitchell College. There will also be special speakers and a visit from the drug dogs. Lunch and a snack will be provided daily.

U.S National Whitewater Center Trip Tuesday, August 2 8:00 am- 5:00 pm Cost: $60 plus lunch Class limit: 12 Join us for a day at the U.S Nation Whitewater Center in Charlotte. We will raft on their man- made river and enjoy other adventurous outdoor activities. Participants will need to bring around $15-20 for Lunch and snacks.
7 General Information Summer Blast Registration will be held Tuesday, May 24 at the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in the Stanly County Agri- Civic Center from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm. Registration for classes/trips will remain open until all spaces are filled. If a class does not have a minimum of 5 participants, it will be canceled. Completed and notarized enrollment and registration forms are required for each participant. A notary will be available in the N.C. Cooperative Extension office during Summer Blast Registration. Payment is due at Registration. We accept checks, cash, debit or credit cards. Make checks payable to Stanly County 4- H. Classes/trips are filled on a first- come, first serve basis; spaces will not be held until payment, enrollment and registration forms are received. No Refunds, unless the class or trip is canceled by the N.C. Cooperative Extension office and Stanly County 4- H. The is a one- time registration fee of $10.00 per participant in addition to the class/trip cost. This covers the cost of a 4- H t- shirt and 4- H Summer Blast Wrap- Up. Stanly County will provide a snack and a drink for each class or trip. Scholarship recipients will be notified prior to registration if they are selected to receive a scholarship. Scholarship recipients will need to complete enrollment packet and registration forms and return them to the N.C. Cooperative Extension office to be registered for any classes.
