The roller coaster of cool and warm weather has begun. Last week here on the Western side of Nebraska, we have had a couple of nights where the low was 34 degrees. Our riding season is coming close to being over. At this time of year we have to take advantage of the last few weeks of riding that we can squeeze in. I know that 2 rides where held by a couple of Chapters on the East side of the State last weekend. I heard that they all had a good time on these rides. One of the groups headed out here to Scottsbluff. We had the pleasure of joining them Friday evening for dinner, thank you Gary and Cindi for the invite, Ross and I along with Steve and Sheryl McLean, Chapter W Directors had a great time with all of you. Last Saturday, here on the West, 5 of us headed over to Casper, WY to join In on the Wyoming District Ride. They had 22 in attendance, and we had a great time. I am looking for anyone that is interested in joining in on the District Team. We will soon be starting to plan for our 2019 activities, and would like to hear some of your great ideas. Please reach out to me by doanemom_3@ hotmail.com.

Dallas Risling Asst. District Director for South Dakota Hello All: Well up here in the northland, riding is rapidly coming to a screeching halt. Yes there will be a few days where we can venture out, but we just won't go as far as we know we could. As we cast our eyes and ears to western South Dakota, we sadly see they have already received their first snowfall, and we witnessed on the news that the winter gear was in place on just about everyone that was there for the buffalo roundup which took place in Custer State Park....bbrrrrr! Most of the rallies have taken place, but yes, there are still some lurking around, check them out towards the rear of WingWorld magazine, and if you can find the time, plan on attending, meet new people, and meet up with your already friends. If you are ready to put your ride away for the coming months, I happened to see a article about putting bars of Irish Spring soap around the perimeter of your garage or other storage place, article said those furry little fellas do not like the smell, and we certainly don't want them around as they like to chew on your wires, even though there is no food value, no I have not tried this yet, but I just might do that this year...just in case! I better back out of here, as I have rattled on long enough...be safe out there see you down the road! Dallas Dallas Risling Assistant District Director for South Dakota

NE-SD District Activities, Training and Rides District Training Event Is your CPR up to date? Could you stop a person from bleeding to death until help arrives? If the person at the table next to you started to choke and gave the international sign for choking could you help? Now let s bring this closer to home. What if this was your family member that this was happening to? Do you know what to do or when was the last time you refreshed those skills? All good questions. To help you find the positive answer, John and Cheryl Papson, Chapter Directors of Nebraska Chapter O (NE-O) have organized a NE/SD District Training Event comprised of First Aid (FA) and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) refresher training. All GWRRA members are invited to attend, especially those folks residing in our own District. The training will occur after the NE-O Breakfast and Get-Together in November. Details are as follows: Event: GWRRA Medic First-Aid, FA and CPR Training When: Saturday, November 17, 2008, After NE-O monthly Get-Together; NE-O will meet at the Golden Corral Buffet and Grill located at 1511 Gregg Rd Bellevue, NE. (just off of Cornhusker Rd and US 75). Breakfast will begin at 8 AM and the Get- To gether at 9 AM. Buffet is all you can eat or you can order off the menu. Everyone will relocate to the training site after the meeting. Training Site: Nebraska Medicine - Bellevue (a.k.a. Bellevue Medical Center [BMC]) 2500 Bellevue Medical Center Drive. Bellevue NE (Located on the South West corner of NE SH 370 and 25 th St.) Lower Level Conference Rooms Training: Medic First-Aid FA and CPR Cost: ONLY $20.00 per person (IF you find it cheaper we ll price match) Instructors: Lance and Diane Brozek, Michael Olson Time: 11:00 AM to Finish Lunch: BMC Café RSVP : By Saturday November 10 to cornhuskerjohn@yahoo.com

Mark and Pam Burwell District Educators Wow! It seems like Summer and the Midwest riding season just started, but now you find a crisp chill in the air bringing a slow-down to your riding. Now that your motorcycle is spending more time in a parked position, you have more opportunities to do the maintenance/modifications you ve been postponing. One of those things should be inspecting the first aid kit you carry on your motorcycle. Many items in a first aid kit have expiration dates and/or deteriorate over time--e.g., medical gloves, stick-on bandages, medications, etc. Because your motorcycle spends time outside in the elements, your on-board first aid kit is exposed to heat and moisture (opposite of keep in a cool, dry place ), causing a more rapid deterioration of its contents; gloves get brittle, adhesives don t stick, and medications lose their effectiveness. It may be time to resupply and/or add to your kit. The American Red Cross ( recommends the following items for a basic first aid kit: - 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches) - 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes) - 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch) - 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram) - 5 antiseptic wipe packets - 2 packets of low-dose aspirin (81 mg each) - 1 blanket (space blanket) - 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve) - 1 instant cold compress - 2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large) - 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each) - Scissors - 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide) - 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)

Mark and Pam Burwell District Educators - 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches) - 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches) - Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass) - 2 triangular bandages - Tweezers Other things to consider for your kit include: * - Acetaminophen - Ibuprofen - Antidiarrheal - Antihistamine (non-drowsy formula preferred) - Fast-acting glucose tablets (for diabetic situations) - Tourniquet Rapid Application Tourniquet System (RATS) - Stretch, Wrap, and Tuck Tourniquet (SWAT-T) - Hemostatic Gauze Compact Mobile Splint - TEMPO Medical Splint - Liquid Bandage Cohesive Wrap * Inclusion of product link/name is to provide an example and is not an endorsement of the particular product If you decide to incorporate some of the more advanced first aid items, ensure you know how to use them before you need them. Most manufacturers have step-by-step videos to guide you through the process of using their products. Hopefully, you will not need to use any of your first aid kit items, but it s best to be prepared in case you do. Remember prepare for the worst and hope for the best. 8 Many times I hear, our chapters aren t doing anything or we don t ride anymore. Do you know all of us can be the solution? Most of us seem to expect the Chapter Directors or Ride Coordinators to plan ALL rides or events. NOT TRUE! Any member can organize a ride, a game day or even help with a monthly gathering. Our Chapter Directors and Ride Coordinators have busy lives like the rest of us and they can t always be the ones responsible to plan everything a chapter does. It is your chapter and helping in even a small way helps share the load. The myth we have all accepted is that, ONLY a Chapter Director or Ride Coordinator can plan a ride. Truth is that any member can plan and call a ride. The reason we all joined GWRRA was to share a common interest in motorcycle riding and experiencing new places to ride and to socialize with others. Chapter Directors should coordinate with their members and part of their job is to make sure the members have fun and are enjoying themselves. But, their job is not to solely plan everything a chapter does. If each of us helped a little with the chapter, everyone could have more fun even while helping. Each of us knows of places of interest or areas to ride that are not necessarily known by others. We can share these with our chapter friends by planning to take them to there. A second myth is that a chapter officer must be on every ride. Also, NOT TRUE! This started because some thought we would have insurance for all if the officer was on the ride. GWRRA insurance, some seem to think, would cover every member on the ride is not true. This insurance only covers the liability of the senior officer should the group be involved in a bad incident. Others are not covered by the GWRRA insurance as each of us have personal insurance to cover ourselves. Any group of members can ride together to have fun.

If you notice on many Rally registrations you sign, there is a statement that says: GWRRA, co-sponsoring organizations or any property owner is NOT responsible for any loss or injury to self or property we become involved with by attending. The same is true of any chapter event that we attend. So help your chapters have more fun, more rides, more social events PLAN something! Contact your directors, ride coordinators, newsletter persons to share your event with all chapter members. This is not for permission but to coordinate dates/times so you aren t conflicting with something already scheduled. We can use , group text, or even phone calls to let our members know they are welcome and invited to join in the FUN. The more each of us PARTICIPATE in planning an event the more FUN the entire chapter can have. We just got home from our fall Mississippi ride and all were invited. It was fun and we got to ride, eat ice cream, play games and see some beautiful scenery. Maybe we can have a ride to visit chapters again. That is always fun. Until next time, Ride SAFE and keep having FUN. Nancy James NE/SD Membership Enhancement Coordinator billnan@centurylink.net

NE/SD Chapter Activities Mississippi River Fall Ride 9/20-23/2018 Chapter NE-O Mississippi River Trip 1,101 miles 9/20 to 9/23/18: It has been eight years since the last Mississippi ride almost to the day. Six of us went on the trip, Bill & Nancy, Jim & Nancy, Jeff & Angie, Bruce & Bella and Les. Many of us ride together and this time fellow riders Al & Marlene couldn t make it they were missed. We need more riders so you will see a new addition in the pictures our new riding companion RYDER. He rides and enjoyed the whole trip. Thursday 9/20/10: Met at JC Penney s in Council Bluffs, clutches out at 3:15 PM. The weather was hot in the 90 s and very windy as we headed East on 92. Our goal was to make the motel in Pella, IA before dark. We were traveling around beautiful Red Rock Lake around 6 PM and made it to the motel as the sun was setting. After dinner at Culver s, we settled into the motel and then got together in the lobby for some of Jim s homemade Irish Cream. Great taste! So much so that we finished it all off the first night but, we had fun socializing and talking about tomorrow s ride.

NE/SD Chapter Activities Friday 9/21/10: Clutches out at 8am after our continental breakfast, 59 degrees outside, overcast and very windy the high for the day was 61 and always cloudy and windy. We headed north out of Pella and made our way on state and county roads while missing big cities. East of Tama, IA, we started getting some nice riding and scenery on the bluffs. We rode this road (Y13 and C9Y) high on a ridge for miles with huge valleys on both sides. By 1130 we pulled into Balltown, IA which is on the Mississippi river. Great food and Great scenery! Not much changing color yet but the landscape dotted with farmsteads was beautiful. After lunch we continued north on the Great River Road (C9Y) to Pikes Peak Park, south of McGregor, which overlooks the Mississippi River. There was lots of flooding on the MS River which we would continue to see for the next few days.

NE/SD Chapter Activities We then crossed the river to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and traveled up north along the river on US35. We then took back roads in WI to our motel in Onalaska, WI just east of LaCrosse. We arrived around 6 PM and everyone was cold and hungry. Luckily there was an Arby s just behind the motel. After dinner, some of us stayed up and played a game called Farkle. We had a great time talking, laughing and seeing Bill lose every game. [I still thought it was lots of fun]. Since it was only going to be 40 degrees at 8 AM we all agreed to leave at 9.

NE/SD Chapter Activities Saturday 9/22/10: Next morning after the continental breakfast we continued north up Wisconsin s Great River Road (Hwy 35). At 9 it got up to 49 degrees and the dense fog had finally lifted. Nice part was the sun was out and NO WIND- Yea! We continued to see flooding the entire day up the river on the WI side and down the river on the MN side. Before crossing the Mississippi into MN we stopped at the Nelson creamery. Many of us bought WI cheese curds [yes they were fresh and squeaked when you ate them]. Then Jeff and Angie noticed a WI beer they liked and checked to see if we had room to carry a couple cases. Yep, we managed to get the beer into two of the trailers and off we went. Crossing into MN at Wabasha we headed north to the Lake Pepin overlook. We then headed south and decided to have lunch at the same place in Kellogg that we ate 8 years previously. It is a great little restaurant [Town and Country Cafe] with very good food. The owner was a lady that hunts and there were pictures on the walls with her kneeling by the black bear she just shot. The black bear was stuffed and in the corner with other deer she had shot. Back on the road heading south on Hwy 61 and then went cross country to Lanesboro, MN. Lanesboro was really busy and even had a little parade re-enacting a WWI parade welcoming the troop s home. Turns out every Saturday in September they have something going on. This Saturday it was Lady s Day along with a golf tournament, and much more people everywhere downtown. We continued south through New Hampton to Decorah, IA to see the Eagle nest [the one on You Tube] and Fish Hatchery. Turns out the high winds had blown the nest down but, we did see two of the Eagles flying overhead. After walking around the Fishery we headed East to our motel in Mason City, IA. Tried to stop and see the covered bridge in Rock Falls that Nancy s dad originally built in 1969 but with the flooding the park was closed. Pulled into the motel around 7PM and walked across the parking lot to eat at Applebee s. Late night so all headed to their rooms for an 8 AM start tomorrow. Sunday 9/23/10: 8 AM: 59 degrees sunny and it even felt warm and did warm up during the day without much wind until Carroll, IA. We took a combination of county roads and Highways east to Algona then south to Fort Dodge. We then rode west and south on county roads to Hwy 30 when we finally stopped for lunch at one of the NE-O sponsors Dairy Sweet in Dunlap, IA. Great Pork Tenderloins for all except Bruce he had a plain hamburger.

NE/SD Chapter Activities After ice cream [Nancy D definitely needs her ice cream], we continued south through Bee- Bee town, the Ridge Road and into Crescent, IA for our gas stop and then home. We all had a good time and all were tired but looking forward to our next group ride. Thanks to all the riders [Ryders] that ventured out to have a good time just riding the motorcycles in the heat, the cold and the wind.
