His vision is mainly for education, disabled and troubled youth Daniel is from Minnesota and has owned two different rock shops Chuck Fagen, Vice President: Jack San Felice, with the Silver King Mine, will be the guest speaker on April 12 th Mr. San Felice will have books

2 for sale about the mine and history of the surrounding area Karen Moschinger, Treasurer: gave a report on the 2018 show Gave a report on A/C funds Glenn Reesing, Trustee: gave second reading of the proposed changes to the By-laws. Members voted to approve the changes Con Higley, Trustee: Orientations are available every Wednesday at 6:00 pm. 4 Spring Rock and Gem Show by Wanda Sisk Wow, this was one rocking show at Skyline High School Feb. 17 th & 18 th. People from all around Arizona came and had fun as well as buying precious wonders from our earth and taking home an amazing piece of nature. The Raffle Booth never had so many people buying tickets! Our Ming Tree, Egg Carton and Wheel of Fortune booths were enjoyed by many children. The Silent Auction changed to where we just sold the rocks and it was a hit! Vendors as well as the community had fun at our rock and gem show. 4

A field trip with a silver lining by Dan Jarvis There is an old optimistic expression that says Every cloud has a silver lining. This old phrase actually came literally true on Wednesday, February 21.

This group of adventurers had plans to follow Alan Koberna to a place in Box Canyon. All hoped to pick up a bucket or two of that blue and green stuff called azurite and malachite.

7 A field trip with a silver lining by Dan Jarvis There is an old optimistic expression that says Every cloud has a silver lining. This old phrase actually came literally true on Wednesday, February 21. It all started on a cool morning as about 30 members of the Apache Junction Rock and Gem Club gathered a short distance north of Florence. This group of adventurers had plans to follow Alan Koberna to a place in Box Canyon. All hoped to pick up a bucket or two of that blue and green stuff called azurite and malachite. The site was an old abandoned mine with a few small piles of tailings. Upon arriving at the site everyone spilled out of their vehicles like starving ants looking for anything they could find to eat. Immediately everyone started to find small samples of azurite and malachite. Rumor has it that club members have visited the same site for at least 11 years. The small rocks everyone was collecting were not too exciting, so many in the group took off into the desert climbing nearby hills and exploring dry washes filled with black sand (iron). In some places the black sand was 3 to 4 inches deep, and many in the group dreamed of finding big gold nuggets. Well, dreaming is as far as it went except for one club member who claimed to have found a couple of small gold flakes. After about two hours of enjoying each other s company and the beautiful Arizona 7

8 desert view some members of the group started to head home. After about half of the group had left Dan Jarvis told Alan Koberna he was going to take a walk around the nearby area to look for tools and other things that might have been accidentally left behind. As Dan looked around he decided to pick up a few more small pieces of rock to give to kids at the next club rock show. This is when the silver lining began to make its appearance. Dan noticed a small hole in the mine tailings where someone in the club had dug looking for something to take home. It was less than 12 inches deep, about a foot wide, and it was about a foot and a half long. In the bottom of the hole were two small blue/green rocks a little bit bigger than a marble. As Dan picked them up something shiny caught his eye. At first he thought it was mica or some other worthless shiny leaverite. Then, it happened. Dan took a second look, and the small amount of shiny stuff looked a little like the silver he saw inside a rock found at the Silver King Mine a few week prior. Could it be silver? No way, not at this mine tailings pile that had been picked through hundreds of times. But, it sure looked like silver. Then, Dan noticed a light blue rock barely sticking out of one side of the small hole in the ground. Something said Go get your hammer and chisel, so that is exactly what he did. Not expecting anything of value Dan returned from getting his tools, and he began to whack away at the light blue rock. Based on the feel vibrating through his hand he could tell that the light blue rock was bigger than the small amount visible at the time. As soon as a small chunk of the blue rock cracked off a great big grin suddenly appeared on Dan s face. There looking back at him were several pockets of what appeared to be beautiful shiny silver. In the excitement of the find others nearby were called to come and see what had been found. More chunks of the blue rock were uncovered and broken off, and each piece contained more of the silvery stuff. Some of the rocks were lifted, and the heavy weight of the rocks gave more evidence that everyone was actually looking at honest to goodness SILVER. When the initial shock wore off, everyone in the small group helped dig the few inches of worthless rocks off the top of the blue rock. The more that was exposed the bigger the blue rock got. Hearts were beating fast as the lucky group furiously pounded and dug. Finally the last piece of blue rock with silver had been removed from the hole. Enough silver bearing rock had been removed to fill two 5-gallon bucks. Yes folks, TWO 5-GALLON BUCKETS. About now all who are reading this report are probably thinking Dan Jarvis is telling another one of his exaggerated stories. Well folks, this time, Scouts Honor, not a single word of this report was exaggerated at all. You are all now saying to yourselves Why was I not there?, or Why did I leave so early from the field trip? Why, why, why? 8

10 Metal Detecting class by Dan Jarvis On the evening of Thursday, February 22, about 30 club members and guests attended a metal detecting class presented by Dan Jarvis. Two representatives from the Superstition West Metal Detecting Club, Ron Haydter and Tom Bugh, attended the class and served on the panel of experts. A member of our own club, and former club president, Chuck Larson, also served on the panel of experts. The 90 minute class was filled with a wide variety of subjects related to metal detecting. Although many people use metal detectors to search for coins and jewelry a good portion of the class focused on natural rocks and minerals (gold, silver, meteorites, etc.) that can be found using a metal detector. Many club members will remember an unexpected guest who briefly attended our club meeting on February 8. The man claimed he had a large meteorite to sell to anyone who was interested. Dan Jarvis visited with the man at his home, and the???meteorite??? was put on display during the class. An informative discussion about meteorites, and how to identify them, was shared with all who attended. At the end of the discussion Dan took a vote on whether the heavy metallic rock was a meteorite or not. The vote was unanimous in the negative. No one believed it to be a true meteorite. And, based on a review by a meteorite expert in Prescott, the class was correct. Had the 80 pound rock been a real meteorite, and if it had been in the rare category, it could have been worth in excess of $36 million dollars. At the end of the class Dan uncovered a pile of azurite and malachite loaded with silver which had been found the day before on the club field trip east of Florence in Box Canyon. A few lucky class members were given samples of the silver rocks. Dan is very grateful to all who helped clean up the room where the class was held. Any club members who may be interested in participating in the hobby of metal detecting are encouraged to contact or join the Superstition West Metal Detecting Club. At the present time about a half dozen members of our rock club are already members of the metal detecting club. Dan Jarvis learned by personal experience that the members of the metal detecting club are just as good and pleasant as the members of our own club.
