1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Welcome Record Volume 32 Issue 10 Wednesday 22 March 2017 Donation: 50c Strange things in the sky Friday evening at around 7pm, while walking the dog with two of my grandchildren, my grand-daughter suddenly asked, what s that in the sky? She thought it looked like a rocket, so I took a few photos of it as it was moving upwards. After showing the photo to a few people for their opinion, I am now thinking it was a plane and the effect of the sun. Or was it?! Margaret Rainbow

On The Project, reporting on a possible rival to Cosco, mention was made of toilet paper. Oh, yes, said the reporter, the infamous Cosco toilet paper. What, I wonder, did the paper do to become infamous join a bikie gang? Why has it become fashionable to refer to the second showing of a TV show as an encore showing? What is wrong with repeat? Is it only the ABC doing this? Rang myself up the other night deliberately this time. It is many years since I put the message on the land-line, so I decided to find out what it is. Things get a bit slow in Dunolly North at times. I was amused by the tone of the report from 1863 about the opening of the then Town Hall. Talk about damning with faint praise. Journalists of years ago must have eyed the great and good with the same wry eyes that modern journos do. Councillors seem to have been viewed with the same they do their best on the whole as modern day councillors are at least not many get harmless missiles thrown at them these days. Greetings to Moora. Glad to see the wondering over the colour-changing pillar boxes has been resolved. Witnessed one of Mother Nature s phenomena this morning (Monday). We were watching the rain after breakfast when all of a sudden the air was full of small flying creatures. There were thousands of them. I eventually managed to catch one it seemed to be too big to be a termite. It shed its wings four of them to reveal a small antish shaped body. Perhaps someone out there can enlighten me as to what they are. They were all gone in about 20 minutes. The Good Wife s Guide Prepare the children. 3 22 March THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 10 Page 3 LETTERS Historical Photos Further to your article on page 11 (March 1st issue), I am writing to tell you about some old photos that were printed about Dunolly in the Weekly Times. Unfortunately I haven t the exact date, but enclosed are the cuttings I have kept from then. Perhaps you may find someone who has more details. I spent many a happy weekend with the Taylor family at Dunolly. This article would ve been in late 1951 or early 1952 as far as I can remember (by my age). Hoping these are of interest to you and your readers. Edna Jarvis Re the Dunolly Hospital story from The Welcome Record. I was so surprised to read the story of the Dunolly District Hospital; it revived some very pleasant memories. On opening The Record the following week, 22nd February, I was delighted to read Rob Anderson s recollections - in fact I can recall most of his great stories. The photos go back to I recognised about five of the nurses - quite a good photo of some of my friends. I enjoyed working for the Hospital and I was made a life Governor in Money was short after the war years. It was after much discussion a decision was made to build the Nurses Home. Our younger set was the name of the committee of which I was a member. There were quite a number on our team and as a result we decided to furnish the Nurses Home. I wish to say that Bob and I built our home opposite the Hospital. I can remember walking across the road to have two of our babies. We were both hospital committee members at different times. After Bob s death 34 years later, I moved to Bendigo. I am now living at the Stella Anderson nursing home in North Bendigo. I have many wonderful memories of our time working for the Dunolly District Hospital. Loris Akers Apologies for poor quality of photos these were from photocopied newspaper cuttings that were then scanned for inclusion in The Welcome Record. They are clear enough to make out features. 5 22 March THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 10 Page 5 Sweeney Todd Congratulations to Shane Harman and his excellent cast of singers on the production of the 1973 musical Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Stephen Sondheim s notoriously difficult show is often not done by opera companies as it is so tricky to sing. The cast rose to the occasion and did a highly creditable job, making it a thoroughly entertaining night. The macabre darkness of the story was well portrayed, and the comic moments the light relief. We look forward to more shows from Shane and company. By a bizarre coincidence, a shop renovation in Maryborough just revealed a cut-throat razor in the old bakers oven. Cut- throat razors play a prominent role in the musical with many a shave being a bit too close for comfort! How spooky! Dame Edna would remark. Rachel Buckley What a wonderful ANZAC weekend on offer. Commencing with the performance of Shirley Valentine on Thursday, 20 April, the weekend provides three days of art and culture organised by Dunolly and District Inc. 8 towns, 16 venues, over 40 artists. Contact Judy Meldrum for more information SHIRLEY VALENTINE IS TRUE, TOUCHING AND WONDERFULLY FUNNY Inside Mrs Joe Bradshaw is the former Shirley Valentine longing to emerge. The Engine Room presents is hitting the road in April with Hit Production s Shirley Valentine, the moving and funny musings of a wife and mother as she struggles to regain her own identity. She is tired of the same old routines and speaks of the excitement of not knowing what will happen next. The highly acclaimed British born singer/actress Mandi Lodge brings her talent and vibrancy to this great role. The play is about escape and takes in the form of a monologue by a 42-year-old Liverpool mother and housewife, Mrs Joe Bradshaw, before and after a transforming holiday to Greece. Inside Mrs Joe Bradshaw is the former Shirley Valentine, longing to emerge. Her self-esteem battered by school, marriage and life in general, she finds herself talking to the wall while her husband is out working. She feels that her life is terribly mundane as she compares scenes in her current life with what she used to be like and feels she has stagnated. When her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid vacation to Greece for two, Shirley grasps the opportunity to head for the sun and leave her current drudgery behind, to refind herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life. The note in the kitchen reads Gone to Greece, back in two weeks. With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society. Written by Willy Russell, best known for this production, and the much-loved Educating Rita, who also wrote the lyrics, music and book for the musical Blood Brothers. Capital Venues and Events, a business unit of the City of Greater Bendigo, is thrilled to bring this small towns touring program to Dunolly on Thursday 20 April at 8pm at the Dunolly Town Hall. 6 Page 6 Volume 32 Issue 10 THE WELCOME RECORD 22 March 2017 Energy price relief for small businesses off Labor s agenda Relief from skyrocketing gas and electricity prices for regional small businesses is on the backburner for the Andrews Government. Small Business Minister, Philip Dalidakis, recently refused to answer questions in Parliament on whether his department was doing any work on the impact of increasing power costs in regional areas, home to many energy-intensive businesses in dairy, manufacturing and food processing. Ripon MP, Louise Staley, said that while the Andrews Government is distracted dealing with the rorting behaviour of its own MPs, the best interests of regional small businesses are being put on the backburner. Local small businesses have reported massive increases in their gas and electricity bills, and this is making it harder to operate in country Victoria. Ms Staley said. Electricity costs jumped up to 16.6 percent for small businesses in 2017 while households saw a 10 percent increase. Prices food processors receive for their products are determined by world markets so, tragically, increased energy costs will see farmers paid less for their products. Victoria is on the path to an energy security crisis if Daniel Andrews continues his desperate grab for Greens preferences. A Matthew Guy led government would scrap the unrealistic Victorian Renewable Energy Target, so country Victorians will not have to face repeated blackouts and higher energy prices." 7 22 March THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 10 Page 7 Don t get scammed by a fake online store The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is warning online shoppers to be wary of scammers masquerading as legitimate online retailers, often selling well-known brands at too-good-to-be-true prices. Already in 2017, the ACCC s SCAMwatch service has received more than 1000 reports of online shopping scams worth more than $150,000 in total. Younger Australians in the 18 to 24 age bracket made up the biggest group of people who reported losing money to online shopping scammers. Worryingly, SCAMwatch s statistics also show nearly one in every two people reporting the scam lost money. Australians love shopping online and scammers take advantage of this by setting up fake websites that look like genuine online stores, including professional-looking design, stolen logos, and even a.com.au domain name and/or stolen ABNs, ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said. The only thing these websites are selling is false hope. The scammers running these sites will advertise goods, often well-known and trusted brands, at unbelievably low prices to lure in unsuspecting consumers shopping around for a good deal. If something looks too good to be true, it probably isn t true. Ms Rickard said that, while the often-professional design of fake-retailer websites can make them almost exactly look like the real deal, there were some tell-tale scam signs consumers can look for. The biggest tip-off is the method of payment: scammers will often ask you to pay using a money order, pre-loaded money card, or wire transfer, or even gift cards from wellknown retailers. If you make a payment this way to a scammer, you re highly unlikely to see that money again, Ms Rickard said. We all love a bargain, the bigger the better, but scammers prey on this and will use the fear of missing out to cloud your judgement. If in doubt, do a Google search on the website you re thinking of buying a product from. There are many great product review services that can tip you off to stay clear of a fake retailer, Ms Rickard said. SCAMwatch tips Do some independent research on a website you re thinking of buying a product from and check out reviews from other consumers. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, pre-loaded card or electronic currency. Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you don t know or trust and never by . When making online payments, only pay for items using a secure payment service look for a URL starting with https and a closed padlock symbol, or a payment provider such as PayPal. Think twice before using virtual currencies such as bitcoin they do not have the same protections as other transaction methods so you can t get your money back once you send it. When using retail websites, find out exactly who you are dealing with. If it is an Australian company, you are in a much better position to sort out the problem if something goes wrong. You can check ABNs at: Check if the website site has a refund or returns policy, and that their policies sound fair. The better online shopping sites have detailed complaint or dispute handling processes in case something goes wrong. Avoid clicking on pop-up ads that can download viruses, spyware, malware, and other unwanted software to your computer. 8 Page 8 Volume 32 Issue 10 THE WELCOME RECORD 22 March 2017 Men s Sheds helping local communities in Western Victoria Communities around Western Victoria are set to benefit from more Men s Sheds, thanks to $879,000 in funding from the Andrews Government. The Labor Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said the grants will help communities provide a space for men to meet, reconnect and participate in their local communities. In Western Victoria we have a brilliant network of Men s Sheds in places like Beaufort, Charlton, Avoca, Donald, St Arnaud, Maryborough, Ararat and Wedderburn, Ms Pulford said. The local Men s Sheds give men the opportunity help their local communities in a whole lot of ways. It could be creating nesting boxes for endangered species or doing maintenance work for pensioners, she said. With over 350 Men s Sheds already operating across Victoria, this funding will provide more opportunities for men to participate locally and interact in a safe and inclusive environment, Ms Pulford said. Grants of up to $60,000 are available for communities to build a new shed, or up to $30,000 to refurbish an existing one. Community groups and local councils are encouraged to apply, especially those from rural communities, and areas that are experiencing significant economic and social change. Men s Sheds are a huge asset for local communities in Western Victoria because they give men the opportunity to interact in a safe space and give back to their community, Ms Pulford said. The local Men s Sheds provide a really positive space for local men and they play a really important role helping other people in the community, like local pensioners with things like house repairs and maintenance, she said. This new funding will help provide more Men s Sheds around our part of Victoria, Ms Pulford said. The Labor Government provides $1 million per year through the Men s Shed program, including funding to support the Victorian Men s Sheds Association in strengthening the capacity of men s sheds. For more information visit Jaala Pulford MP Making Maryborough Education Centre more inclusive Maryborough Education Centre will receive a funding boost to support students with disabilities and special needs, thanks to a grant from the Andrews Government. Labor MP for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, today congratulated Maryborough Education Centre on receiving funding under the $20 million Inclusive Schools Fund. The fund is helping government schools better support the social and education needs of young people with a disability. In December last year 24 schools received funding in round two of the scheme, sharing $3.6 million. Today it was announced that a further 17 schools would share in an additional $3.4 million in round two funding to build projects including sensory gardens, learning and wellbeing centres and innovative play areas. Ms Pulford said Maryborough Education Centre will receive $200,000 from the fund which will be used for an inclusive, environmentally sustainable, sensory play and learning space for children with special needs. The inclusive outdoor socialisation and play-space will have two playgrounds situated side by side plus a teenage outdoor café retreat, Ms Pulford said. This funding is about transforming hundreds of young lives over the next four years by giving schools the opportunity to realise their vision for a truly inclusive school, she said. Inclusive education is all about giving students with disabilities the same chances as other students who do not face the additional challenges of a disability, Ms Pulford said. Maryborough Education Centre Principal, David Sutton, welcomed the funding, saying it will further enhance opportunities provided by the school. Maryborough Education Centre prides itself on its respectful and inclusive culture and this money will allow the mainstream and special needs students to share a space that is welcoming for all, Mr Sutton said. The Inclusive Schools Fund is one of nine initiatives in the Special Needs Plan for Victorian Schools, which is ensuring that students with disabilities get the same opportunities as other students. This includes the annual Accessible Buildings Program, which provides government schools with funding for facilities to support students, parents and teachers with injuries or disabilities. Romans 5:8 Sunday service to be Bealiba Uniting s last Bealiba s historic Uniting church is conducting its last service this Sunday. Congregation members are inviting anyone and everyone who has been previously involved in the church to attend the 2.30pm service. Constructed in 1910, the Bealiba Uniting church has seen congregation numbers slowly dwindle over the years. Today, the church has just three members. Since 1999, the Uniting church has been a lay ministry church where congregation members and guest speakers from Maryborough and St Arnaud regularly preach in fortnightly services. Most of the services have been fortnightly. Services were probably weekly pre-wwii, congregation member Graeme Newitt said. Mr Newitt has been a member of the Bealiba Uniting church since the 1960s and has regularly attended services even though he now resides in Daisy Hill. In the 1960s, there would have been 20 to 25 people coming here. Most of them were farmers from the surrounding area, he said. In 2010, when the church held its 100 year celebrations, just 10 people were regular attendees. The church was full though when we had our celebrations, Mr Newitt said. While previous congregation members have passed on or have retired to Bendigo or Maryborough, Mr Newitt described past congregation members as very loyal. In a little town like Bealiba, you don t get people replacing others who have passed or moved on, Mr Newitt said. With the closure of the Uniting church, only the Anglican and Catholic churches will remain in Bealiba. 10 Page 10 Volume 32 Issue 10 THE WELCOME RECORD 22 March 2017 Flying was his passion Over the Christmas break in 1979/80 two friends flew with us to Queensland in our lovely Beechcraft Debonair. Peter flew from Moorabbin to Parkes. We refuelled and I flew to Goondiwindi. While Maurice and Peter were refuelling, I strolled around the hangars. A delightful old farmer was wheeling his Cessna out to go to a sale. I helped him and he asked where we were going; had we visited Goondiwindi before? He said the keys were in his Ute and to have a look around town before we left don t you love country folk? It was a lovely gesture and we all really enjoyed looking around the beaut town; refuelling the Ute and then Maurice flew to Noosa. Peter flew on to Rockhampton and our friend Robbie was waiting for us at the airport. He drove us around that lovely town and we enjoyed a few ales at a charming pub catching up and telling yarns. We stayed with Robbie for a few nights. He had bought a very nice property in Yeppoon as well as a mango farm down the road. (He told us later that he d hoped we would retire there with him on the mango farm if only dreams always came true!) Sadly, a fire had gone through the mango property and the fruit had ripened but were slightly burnt on one side so not marketable. We picked heaps (cannot hide my grin remembering) I was in heaven for that week. A friend of his and two daughters arrived from Canberra and we went to Great Keppel Island where we had rented a lovely house for a week. Those crystal clear waters were divine for swimming and sailing. Robbie was a fantastic cook, so all meals were delicious as well as the mangos. We came back to Robbie s farm and sweltered in the humidity. Maurice flew dual in a seaplane out to Yeppoon for the experience and loved it. Peter flew us from Rockhampton to Roma; I flew to Coonabarabran and Peter brought us home to Moorabbin. A wonderful trip but nice to be back out of the humidity. In April, a couple from Vancouver who had looked after us so well in 1974 when Maurice visited the university there and we had kept in touch, wanted us to fly them to central Australia - we had corresponded so often about our journeys. Maurice flew from Moorabbin to Mildura to refuel; I flew to Leigh Creek and Maurice flew to Alice Springs. We hired a car and visited Simpsons Gap, and Stanley Chasm and all the charming regular tours around Alice. Maurice flew to Ayers Rock with the usual trip around the rock and sunset and sunrise were of spectacular memories always. I flew to Coober Pedy and that town tour is always SO different for overseas visitors. Next, our favourite stop at Andamooka with the Dukes; delicious meals, hospitality, opal sales and yarns. Love those folks! Maurice continued flying to Leigh Creek to refuel. I flew to Mildura, then Maurice flew us home along the Murray River to Swan Hill and Moorabbin a course VH-AUD could almost have flown herself after so many trips - and one recalled ecstatically by us all, all of these years since. Carolyn Butler Painting the town - or at least our pillar boxes - Red John Moir hard at work painting the pillar boxes. What a splendid job. Thanks John.

11 22 March THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 10 Page 11 Around school this week: Our staff has been fortunate enough to be involved in Berry Street Trauma Informed Practice professional development. Many times throughout our conversations we have come up against the concept of fair and what it means to everyone. Often, when specialists have given us advice on how to deal with a particular student or issue, (for example, they might have proposed that we allow a student to have a free choice reward after achieving a short goal) we have questioned them on their advice, asking but how is that fair for all of the other students? During our last Berry Street PD day this question came up again and we were presented with two quotes and an image to help change our thinking around the concept of fair. Fair isn t always equal AND Fair doesn t start at 9am STUDENTS OF THE WEEK (Will be presented at next week s assembly) Prep/1 Zavier Warren Year 1/2 Thang Nguyen Year 3/4 Chloe Goodwin Year 5/6 Alice Milburn Principal s Award to be announced LAST WEEK S STUDENTS OF THE WEEK Equality every child gets exactly the same Equity every child gets exactly what they need. If all students had exactly the same experience before school every morning (and in their lives outside school) then it would be more reasonable to think that treating every student in the school the same way while they are at school would be considered fair. For a range of reasons, not all students do have the same experiences in their lives outside school; some students have not had breakfast, some may have had an argument or heard some sad/bad news; some may be struggling with mental health issues etc. Therefore, this needs to be taken into consideration and adjustments may need to be made to ensure they are being provided with the right support to help them succeed as well. Fair doesn t mean giving every child the same thing, it means giving every child what they need. Rick Lavoie I am really proud of the level of support our school provides to ALL of our students. We really are fortunate to have such caring staff members, who are dedicated to helping each child achieve and succeed and are always willing to continue learning themselves.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft or Windows they aren t, they are scammers. The scammer will tell you that they have been alerted that your computer has a virus and they will offer to fix it then and there. I know that no-one likes being without their computer whilst it s being repaired, so you may be tempted to say yes. If you do say yes, the scammer will take you to what is called the Event Log in your computer where the scammer will show you the Error and Warning Messages the Event Log records all the events that occur on your computer. It doesn t send messages to Microsoft. If a message pops up asking if you want to send the information to Microsoft, it has NOTHING to do with viruses. Some critical events ask if you want to send the information to Microsoft for additional analysis, but it does not include your name, phone, contact details or any other personal information. The scammer will also ask you to open your internet and type something in. What you are actually doing is allowing them access to your computer where they can go through all of your files and may even see your passwords, especially if they install a Key Logger at the same time. A Key Logger is a program that stores the key strokes that you have used to access your bank accounts and/or anything else they want to find out. They will also ask you to pay them straight away either by bank to bank or credit card. I cannot stress highly enough that you DO NOT let them into your computer. The easiest thing to do is say that you don t own a computer, even if they say their records show that you do. Some of the scammers get really aggressive and quite rude, which is just a bullying tactic, so don t be taken in. There are no records kept of everyone who owns a computer along with their phone number etc. - so please don t be fooled. You can always have a bit of fun with them if you are that way inclined or have a look at youtube.com. Just search for scammers to see the sort of thing they will try. This one is from a Victoria (Texas USA) Police officer, watch?v=f4sy2-smhl8. (Click on the link to watch). Microblast Computers 87 High St, Maryborough Vic, At our meeting last Wednesday, NHW reminded us of several ways to keep ourselves and our property safe. Remember to keep your car keys and spares in a safe place as home invasions to steal keys are increasing. Drivers of gophers are reminded to have a flag on their vehicle so they are visible to others. Drivers are also reminded to drive slowly and carefully in supermarket car parks. Motor car break-ins and damage are common, so lock up and do not leave valuables in sight. Dunolly NHW would like to acknowledge Helen Jesser s contribution to our group and her reminders to the public to keep themselves safe over the past 13 years. Dunolly NHW

20 Page 20 Volume 32 Issue 10 THE WELCOME RECORD 22 March 2017 Bealiba Court House Built in 1913 by Scarf and Sons for the princely sum of 394/10/0, the Bealiba Court House sits on a prominence overlooking attractive creek flats. This area was apparently the Police Camp. It seems many old court houses were deliberately built to be a focal point, probably to encourage respect for the rule of law. It was built to replace an earlier one which stood in Main Street about where the Post Office now stands. That building was purchased by Orme Sowden, a very well-known Bealiba identity, for use as a shop. The current weatherboard court house has a single courtroom with an office and a rear entrance for the judge. There is a veranda running along the front of it. From the back it looks very much like a school house of the same period. A disused black notice board is by the front door and a Heritage Trail sign is fading in the sun on the side wall. In years gone by, the creek flat was a market site and before that, was used for cereal cropping. It has never had permanent structures on it because it does flood. In recent years a metal detector operator has searched around the horse hitching rails area and was delighted to find quite an array of buckles and buttons. Up until its closure the Bealiba Court House was used regularly to administer the law. Bealiba lost both the court house and the police station in The police house was moved to Tarnagulla and the court house was bought to be converted into a private residence. But in the end another house was moved in from Dunluce and the court house is now a storage facility. In the heady days of the gold rush there was a lot of unruly behaviour and the Police Camp and Court House were both kept busy. Now it sits quietly above the empty summer dry paddock; a testament to a bigger and busier Bealiba. Much of this information comes from Alan Henderson's informative book about Bealiba.
