1 BLUE RIDGE LEDGER NEWSLETTER OF THE VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2 GLENDA M. ANGUS, EDITOR JULY 2016 COMMENTS FROM THE PRESIDENT SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST I am sure most of you are into your summer travels. Elaine and I have traveled to eastern North Carolina to attend her cousin s reunion and Charleston, SC for a wedding. Let Glenda know where and what you did this summer so she can share it with the chapter in our next Ledger. Our next rally is our Fall Rally beginning Sept. 10, 2016 at the Hearthside Grove RV Resort, Petoskey, Michigan. If you are planning to attend and have not mailed Bob Zumwalt your registration and call the park to reserve your site, you must do it NOW. Registration forms are located in the Ledger. This year we are using ballets to elect our new board of directors to serve for the next two years. Mike Lecholop and his committee will be sending to the membership a voting ballet the first week of August. You will be required to send your ballet back to Mike by August 31, 2016 for you vote to count. Please remember our members in your prayers that are having health issues. Hope to see you in Michigan, safe travels. 2 PAGE 2 BLUE RIDGE LEDGER The 2016 Officer elections will be held August 1-31, 2016 with the new slate of officers being announced at the Fall Rally in Petoskey, MI. On August 1 you will either receive ballots by or will be sent an link to an online voting system. The decision as to which way we will vote will be decided in the coming days. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the election, please contact anyone of us: Mike Lecholop mlecholop@sc.rr.com Tom Leydic tgleydic@gmail.com Stan Nieminski stan@nracpa.com (Courtesy of Mike Lecholop) While reading an ad for Dish TV where you could turn off programming, I wondered if when your coach was stored that would apply for insurance. Guess what? Good Sam ($2000 a year on an 8 year old coach that is parked 8 months a year) said with a phone call from Florida or when the coach is in the shed at home, the rate would be $601 annually. Call when going back on the road for full coverage. Good to know. (Courtesy of Bruce Margaret)
3 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2 PAGE 3 Mike & Retha Hopkines wintered in Tucson, Arizona. On March 11, Mike went for a bike road. After 22 miles, he was only a block from the RV Park when he had an accident. He came upon a red light, and when he stopped, he was not able to get his shoes to release from the pedal clips. He fell over on his right side and broke his right leg in 4 places. Mike was transported by ambulance to St Mary s Hospital where he underwent surgery the following day. He now has a titanium rod down the middle of his fibia with one screw at the knee, and two screws near the angle holding it in place. Mike was unable to place any weight on his leg for 6 weeks. Mike was unable to leave Tucson on April 1 as planned. (Mike Hopkins) Unfortunately Pat and I are spending our first summer in 12 years not on the road. We are somewhat housebound since Pat had her left knee replaced in April and she is still doing physical therapy to get back full use of it. We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary on June 18th. (Dick Tracy) John Smith us home and doing better after his surgery. He has started driving his motor home on small trips. Glad to see you are doing well, John. (Courtesy of Charlie Harvell) Buddy Reynolds has been diagnosed with glioblastoma that is inoperable. He and Becky have also talked directly with a neurosurgeon from the Duke Brain Cancer Center and he recommended they use the treatment plan suggested by the St. Francis Cancer Center in Greenville. Buddy has his first radiation treatment and will take oral chemotherapy. This treatment will be administered 5 days per week for 6 weeks. He is fortunate that he is in no pain, only what he describes as very weird feelings. Since he has lost most of his vision, he cannot be left alone; therefore, Becky does not have much free time for talking on the phone. Texting is good for her. If someone calls on the landline phone, Buddy enjoys that and he also likes for Becky to read cards to him that he receives in the mail. Buddy still reviews Facebook and reads s occasionally. (Becky Reynolds) Rick is doing better and no longer hobbling. He was on crutches last time we saw him. Glad to hear you are doing pretty good Rick. (Diana Blaher) Bob Angus had orthoscopic surgery today and is doing well. As usual I can t keep him down. At least he hasn t tried to drive yet. (Glenda)
4 Page 6 BLUE RIDGE LEDGER First, I apologize to the mechanically inclined as this is written by one that rivals such knowledge of Homer Simpson. Nonetheless I hope it's informative. As many of you know we had a problem in Dillard with our bedroom slide motor. I ordered one from Fleetwood with next day Fed X delivery. The package did arrive, unfortunately the motor shipped was the wrong one. We decided to drive to Fleetwood in Decatur and exchange for the correct motor. Thanks to Bruce Ellen who leased me a valuable tool to keep the slide from coming out during travel. The tool was a 24 inch 2X4 piece of wood lodged in on the top of the slide. Very disappointed with Fleetwood as they made excuses why the wrong motor was shipped. All excuses were hogwash. They did not offer any type of accommodation other then to exchange the motor. We brought the Discovery home and with 4 hours of work I installed a new one. I think Frank Cason will be surprised and maybe impressed that I installed the motor as he knows I have two left hands when it comes to repairs. Here is the most important part of this fiasco that I learned and it may be useful to others. The motor snapped itself from the gearbox as it is one unit as you can see in the picture above & below. There is a shaft that connects to the gearbox. There is a pin with a nut, unfortunately the nut was loose and was unscrewing as the shaft was turning. There is less than 1/4 inch clearance between the shaft/ pin and the motor as shown in the picture. As the nut was coming of the pin the clearance vanished and the pin/nut locked against the motor stopping the gears from turning. As a consequence the motor snapped itself away from the gearbox. The bottom line is you may want to inspect the motor mechanism to make sure the clearance is always present. It may save you money and avoid inconvenience. (courtesy of Stan Nieminski)
