Chairman s Welcome. I do not know what the weather is doing, one day it is hot and then the next we have a cold North wind. Hopefully it will settle down soon. We were fairly lucky with the weather at Downton. 116 units came out. Many people walked through the rapeseed field to the Fair. The farmer had kindly cut us a path through the crop. My Colin & Steve Ashman SWR Vice Chairman/Wilts DA member) had a club stand in the memorial gardens. They both talked with non & existing members giving details of weekend rallies and THSs. The following weekend was a 5 day meet at Exbury. The weather was good with a turnout of 16 units. On the subject of sites, what do you members want????? Exbury is a lovely site with good walks in a lovely area. I had family commitments otherwise I would have gone. If we only have a few turn up at any of our rallies, the landowners may think it not worth us using the site again. Also, it is embarrassing for the stewards who normally do not pay for their pitch. It could be with small numbers that the landowners may want pitch fees for the stewards. 1) Do you want green field sites/ commercial or a mixture through the year? 2) Do you want 4/5 day meets or just the weekend? 3) Do you want entertainment or just to chill out? 4) Which areas do you like to camp in? 5) Do you go to another site which we do not use, that you could recommend for us to try? 6) Do you want to camp at club sites and do you object if you have to vacate a site by 12 noon on the Sunday? I would appreciate a reply either by , telephone or snail mail (as you can be anonymous if you want to be). Our sites officer is a volunteer and it is difficult to please everyone. Don t forget that any site in the National Parks Area must be entered on the database by 1 st May each year for the following year s rallies. It would be good to have member s photos of sites to go on the website/facebook and a resume of a meet for pickets post. Our next rally was held at Furzebrook with 37 units. Our DA was hosting the SWR AGM at the hall on Saturday 13 th. Congratulations to Chris Porter re-elected as Region Chairman. Anne Dearling will be taking over from me as Region Secretary & I will be Region THS officer. In the evening we had the duo Owen & Darren who were fabulous keeping us entertained. We also had a surprise visit from an Elton John look alike. They managed to keep the floor filled with dancers and the volume level was just right allowing people to talk. Some people who normally go home early due to noise level, stayed until 11pm. I am sure that we will use them again for a future function. Don t forget that our first THS starts Friday 26 th May at Gorse Farm, Blissford. It would be good to see some DA members as well as guests. There will be a coffee morning. I am taking out the parachute for any children on site to use and a set of boules in case the grass is short somewhere to have a game. Thank you to the stewards this month Geoff & Judy Thomas, John & Susan Laws, Alan & Marian Bown, Ian Fraser, Colin Brown & myself.

Your Holiday Sites May/June News Update Spring Bank Holiday 2017 All are welcome to come and join us. This is the Camping & Caravanning Club Big Camp Weekend Will you be part of it? New Forest DA will be at Gorse Farm, Blissford Nr. Fordingbridge from (Fri 26 May until Sun 11 June) Easily accessed from the A338. Follow signs to Sandy Balls but as you climb up the hill look out for the NFDA signs at the top of the hill taking you to the site entrance. Please remember there is a 40mph speed limit in the forest where the animals are free to roam on the roads by day and night. Situated on a small working farm on the edge of the New Forest National Park. You will be free to do your own thing however we might have a little surprise for you one day weather permitting. Your stewards are Den & Margaret Legg, along with Chris & Lynda Sawkins Price.: 10 per unit night, Extra Adults 3.00 per person Not far from Fordingbridge for local shops or Ringwood which is a little further. Salisbury has a market on Saturday - catch the bus from Fordingbridge or go to Britford & get on the Park & Ride which takes you to the centre of Salisbury We have made this a holiday site this year so that families can come away for the whole of the school holiday if they want to without having to move sites. If this idea is successful we shall repeat it in 2018 at Lytchett Minster Nr Poole where we have already reserved a site and the dates. If you have been to Royal Victoria Country Park DA Meet from 9th - 14th June why not come along and join us at Sandy Acres? Sandy Acres Girl Guide Camping Field (Wed 14 Jun - Wed 28 Jun) Price: 8 per unit night, Extra Adults 3 per person. Located in Sandy Lane SO32 2LR just off the A334 NW of Shedfield. Only approach using the A334, take the Sandy Lane N and follow brown signs to Marriott Hotel. Pass the hotel and the site is approx 800m on your left. It is a lovely tree lined flat field with country life all around. This site is ideal for visiting the many attractions in Portsmouth including the Spinnaker Tower 15 miles away and Marwell Zoo which is only 5 miles away. Supermarkets are in Fareham which is 4 miles away This is another new site for us this year but as it is a trial for both parties they have limited our numbers so if you intend to come along please telephone Colin Rice on to check on pitch availability before you travel. Colin is already taking bookings so the sooner you contact him the more likely you are to be able to join us. Yours stewards are Colin & Tina Rice, along with Don & Sue Camburn Janet Setchell & Don Camburn Joint THS Officers

DOWNTON CUCKOO FAYRE The weather held fair for the 37 th Cuckoo Fayre at Downton near Salisbury. Traditionally the arrival of the cuckoo was seen as the onset of good weather and the Downton tradition of "opening the gate" to let the cuckoo through is the basis of the fair. The Downton Fairs are first recorded in 1249 and A Fair was claimed on the eve, day and morrow of St. Laurence (9 th to 11 th April). Early Fairs died out and in 1676, two annual Fairs were granted on 12 th April and 21 st September. When the term Cuckoo Fair came to be used seems to be unknown, as is any possible links with pagan festivities. The Cuckoo Princess only dates from the revival of the Fair in 1980 but there may have been an earlier Cuckoo King. In recent years Ray and I have usually camped at our site at Wick Farm but as both our fire and our fridge in the caravan packed up over the Easter camp at Ballards, we had to make do with just a day visit to the Fayre. It was a feast of over 250 craft, garden, gift, homeware and food and drink stalls on the greens and in marquees along The Borough. The Downton Cuckoo Fayre offers fun for all the family including Rural Craft demonstrations, Punch and Judy, Clowns, Fairground stalls and roundabouts in the Memorial Gardens and a Farmers Produce Market in the car park behind the Co-op. We always aim to get to the Fayre by 9.a.m. before the other 19,998 people arrive! and by 10.a.m. we can usually be found in the Baptist Church Hall (behind the pub) with our morning coffee and cake. After watching the Cuckoo Princess being crowned, the procession through the High Street and more meanderings, we eventually ended up in the back garden of one of the lovely cottages that serves lunch, with the profits going to the Salisbury Hospice. By then we had had enough so we detoured to see the stewards on site at Wick Farm, taking with us a supply of chocolate bikkies in the hope of a cuppa!!!! thanks Alan! If you have never been to the Downton Cuckoo Fayre before, held on the Saturday of the first Bank Holiday in May, why not give it a go!? and if you camp at our site at Wick Farm you won t have to get the car out as it is only a short walk across a field to all the festivities!! Marg & Ray (Miller) New Forest DA website is at Weekend stewards mobile number is now

EMERGENCY WARD 10 JUNE 2017 Well, I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful sunny weather, is it going to last we ask ourselves?? The gardeners among us will be hoping for some slight precipitation in the evening or at night just to dampen things down and help all those bedding plants to really get going! During the last month I have sent out 2 Get Well Cards to:- Carole Hill & Judy Thomas Looking forward to seeing you both up and about and if anyone is feeling a bit under par, just let me know who they are and I ll send off a card right away! Mary thanks! Margaret (Miller) ray.miller7@ntlworld.com KNATTY KNITTERS Last month in Pickets Post I included a picture of the New Forest D.A. Knatty Knitters but I omitted to say who we were!!! SO! 6 Ingredients 6 Ramekin dishes 4 Digestive biscuits, crushed 6 Strawberries, sliced SPEEDY CHEESECAKES 2 Bananas (or 3 bananas depending on the size), sliced 250g Mascarpone cheese 300ml Crème fraîche Chocolate (melted - to decorate) Method 1. Mix the mascarpone and crème fraîche together and cover the bananas 4. (Good game, good game!!) Margaret (Miller) ray.miller7@ntlworld.com If anyone else has the misfortune to be hit by a rogue fence post, could I suggest they get a quote from Clive Freed at Paintman Ltd.? The repair on my motorhome is totally invisible and was done, (at a very reasonable price), on my drive. His address is, 57 Sarum Avenue West Moors Ferndown, BH22 0ND Mobile: He did a similar repair for me a few years ago and I can t remember where it is now! Regards, John Tompsett

Liz and I would like to thank Marion and Alan for stepping in as stewards at Exbury so that we were able to enjoy the beautiful blooms in the Gardens and a sociable Tea Round the Pole.
