In the grounds you will find our amazing adventure playground, TreeTop Trek high ropes experience and mini golf. Seasonal activities include pony rides and boat hire. You can also take a cruise on indermere from our jetty. The Visitor Centre offers a gift shop, terrace café, exhibitions, an indoor soft play area and an undercover traversing wall. Dove Cottage & The ordsworth Museum Grasmere, Cumbria, LA22 9SH Tel: MA REF 11 K g b E N O Dove Cottage is much as it was when ordsworth left in Here and in the museum are the only places in the world where his possessions and manuscripts are displayed together. An entertaining guided tour gives a vivid impression of life here, the people who visited and their exploits! The ordsworth Museum tells ordsworth s remarkable life story, his tragic childhood, his travels through the French revolution, his radical ideas which are so relevant today and how he changed literature forever. Special exhibitions change three times a year and cover art, travel, lives of famous people and social history. Opening times 1 March 31 October: Open daily 9.30am 5.30pm. There will be no access to Dove Cottage on Tuesdays during December and February but the Museum and Shop will remain open. Closed December and from 5 January 2014, re-opening on 3rd February. 7 Enjoy some of the most picturesque places in Cumbria from the very best vantage points. As the Cumbrian gateway to Hadrian s all Country, Carlisle Castle stands proudly dominating Britain s most besieged border city. Birdoswald Roman Fort is where you can see the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian s all - an epic orld Heritage Site. Just a stone s throw from Hadrian s all and you will find Lanercost riory which suffered frequent attacks during the Anglo-Scottish wars. 8 Holehird Gardens atterdale Road, indermere, Cumbria LA23 1N Tel: MA REF 13 b E The Lakeland Horticultural Society s Gardens at Holehird are probably unique in being developed and completely maintained by volunteers as well as being funded entirely by donations and, in the summer months, from the sale of plants propagated from the garden. The 17 acre hillside garden includes specimen trees and shrubs, extensive rock and heather gardens, alpine houses, a walled garden and herbaceous borders. The superb Lakeland setting also contains a small woodland walk and water features. The Society holds three National Collections of Astilbe, Meconopsis and olystichum Ferns as well as having a renowned collection of Hydrangea. Opening times Open all year dawn to dusk. The Hall is nestled amongst 25 acres of beautiful gardens, meadows, woodlands and deer park. The Courtyard Café offers fresh local food and wonderful homemade cakes. The Food Hall stocks the Estates own meats, cheese and cakes as well as the best local produce. The Gift Shop offers an array of lovely and unusual items as well as plants from local nurseries. 9 Hutton-in-the-Forest enrith, CA11 9TH Tel: MA REF 15 K g b ç E Lord and Lady Inglewood s ancient house in the medieval Forest of Inglewood was originally built as a stronghold against the Scots. Their family has lived at Hutton for over 400 years and the house has evolved through centuries of change into an architectural puzzle with each generation leaving its mark both inside and outside. The extensive gardens with topiary and terraces, a wild flower meadow and lake, lead round to the alled Garden which is now the main flower garden. Tulips and lilies, herbaceous borders, roses and fruit trees are a mass of colour and interest throughout the summer. Keswick Museum & Art Gallery Station Road, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 4NF Tel: K g E MA REF 16 N O Keswick Museum is a hidden treasure of the North Lakes. Here you will find the significant and rich heritage of the Keswick area displayed in a traditional Victorian Museum. Eclectic and quirky the building is packed full of artefacts, from a mummified cat to a giant cobra skin. Opening times Keswick Museum re-opens in Spring 2014 after being re-furbished. 10 Kirklinton Hall & Gardens Kirklinton, Carlisle, CA6 6BB Tel: /850 MA REF 17 b ç E Adjacent to the 12th Century de Boyville stronghold, Kirklinton was built from its stone in the 1680 s. Extended in the 1870 s and ruined in the 1970 s, the Hall has been a Restoration Great House, an RAF base, a school, a gangsters gambling den and worse. alk in the footsteps of Norman Knights, Cavalier Commanders and the Kray twins. Now, Kirklinton Hall and its Gardens are being restored by the Boyle family to its former glory. It is also the home of SlowFood Cumbria and is available for weddings and events. Levens Hall & Topiary Gardens Levens Hall, Kendal, LA8 0D Tel: MA REF 19 K g b E N Levens Hall is an atmospheric, welcoming and fascinating Elizabethan mansion, home to the Bagot family. The Hall contains oak panelling, period furniture, Cordova leather wall coverings, paintings, the earliest English patchwork and other beautiful objects of the highest standard. The widely admired famous topiary garden laid out from 1694 is the oldest in the world and the cut yew trees, together with herbaceous borders, massive beech hedges, a pond surrounded by pleached limes, nuttery and vegetable garden provide year round interest. Home-made food, attractive gift shop, traction engines in steam on Sundays, play area and a variety of children s activities. Opening times 6 th April 9 th October. 13 Rydal Mount & Gardens Ambleside, Lake District, LA22 9LU Tel: (015394) MA REF 24 K g b E N ç Rydal Mount,lies in the heart of the Lake District, and commands glorious views of lake indermere and Rydal ater. This was ordsworth s family home from 1813 to his death in 1850, here he wrote and revised many of his poems including his most famous poem daffodils publishing in The house now belongs to descendants of the poet and retains a lived-in, family atmosphere. ordsworth was a keen landscape gardener and the four acre garden remains very much as he designed it. Sizergh Sizergh, near Kendal, LA8 8DZ Tel: MA REF 25 K g b ç E Sizergh one family, one estate and more than 700 years of history. This much-loved family home stands proud in its natural setting. Still inhabited by the Strickland family, Sizergh has many tales to tell and certainly feels lived in, with centuries-old portraits sitting alongside modern family photographs. You can explore its gardens or venture into the 647 hectares (1,600 acres) of beautiful estate to spot the rich and diverse wildlife which also makes it their home. The atmosphere here is timeless, and it is an unexpected treasure on the edge of the Lake District. Sizergh is a family home, consequently there are some opening restrictions. Opening times The house is open from 9 March to 2 November, Sunday to Thursday. The garden and estate are open all year round except on 25 December when the garden is closed. Theatre by the Lake Theatre by the Lake, Lakeside, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5DJ Tel: MA REF 28 K g b E N O Theatre by the Lake has a setting on the shores of Derwentwater no other professional theatre in Britain can match. Each year it stages up to nine of its own productions of classic, modern and new plays on its two stages and has won multi-starred reviews from national critics. The mature trees include ellingtonia, Cut-leaved Beech and Cedar. Extensive work has been carried out on the rockeries and herbaceous borders since the 1950s. There is now a large collection of Alpines, Himalayan plants, Salvias and other unusual plants. The rimulas by the pond, where there is a picnic area, are very colourful in the Spring. e sell second-hand tools and plants. Fruit and vegetables from the walled garden are available when in season.
