Come and have a Cuppa with us in our back yard. We will enjoy your presence, but No Presents - All Welcome Memorial Day We arrived at the Lismore Heights Bowling Club at 10 am for morning tea provided by the NRVVCC social funds, followed by a Memorial for past members. During morning tea Robert Lovell read the names on the Memorial Plaque followed by a minute s silence. It was uplifting this year when the memorial became, not only a solemn ceremony for the passing of our members, but also a celebration of the lives of those who have passed on. Bob Trevan gave us an overview of the character of some of those members which made them stand out, particularly in the memory of some of our long time club members. Well done Rob and Bob. On the road again and we headed off along the Caniaba road to Casino for a car display at the Heavy Horse & Machinery show at the Casino show ground. The drive was mostly uneventful except for carefully passing through an area where a landslide had covered part of the road. The show was quite spectacular where tractors and machinery past and modern were on display throughout the day. I was amazed to see children, girls and boys, some as young as eight or ten years old driving some of these monsters in the procession. We also went to watch the wonderful Clydesdale horses ploughing and hauling the harrows around a field which was common to see back in our younger days.

7 Our car display was well received by the visiting public and the make model and appearance of each vehicle was broadcast throughout the day. Our car display of the day covered vehicles dating back to 1919 which assimilated well with the theme of the day. After lunch we watched the magnificent display of tractors and machinery in the procession, some going back many decades being driven by men, women and children. At around 2pm we called it a day and headed home through the highway back to Lismore. The day was very enjoyable and we thank Robert & Meryl Lovell for organising the combined Memorial and following event for us. 10 Sourced by Bob Trevan BRIGGS & HANCOCK by Dave Hancock After finishing school and at the age of thirteen, I did many bush jobs such as tree felling, ringbarking, fencing and later worked on a cattle station. One day on my way to a new job, I stopped at Mick Benson s garage in Bonalbo for fuel for my newly acquired Rugby ute, and Mick asked me if I would be interested in working for him. I accepted this offer and commenced work in the motor trade in 1940 at the age of seventeen, employed by SC Benton (known to everyone as Mick). Who had the General Motors Agency in that area. In 1943 I enlisted in the RAAF but was declared permanently and medically unfit due to a severe head injury suffered in an earlier motor cycle accident. I had survived the accident but the motorcycle hadn t. Mick Benton had started business earlier in Lismore in Magellan Street in 1929 selling Graham Paige cars and Diamond T and Karrier trucks. Bankrupted in 1931 he moved to Bonalbo and restarted in the motor trade later. The vehicles sold by him in Bonalbo were Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Vauxhall and Bedford. As most sales involved a trade-in, he had a lucrative sideline in second hand cars and trucks. He also sold Speedwell cycles plus batteries, motor parts and bicycle spares. Unlike present day one-brand petro and oil outlets, we had several brands including Mobil, Shell, Ethyl and COR (Commonwealth Oil Refineries). Petrol was referred to as motor spirit or benzene. Apart from the usual bowsers, petrol and also kerosene was sold in four- gallon tins. These tins came as a pair in a well-made dove-tailed wooden box with the maker s name on the box. This form of marketing was discontinued shortly after, but kerosene sales continued for several years in this form. Charcoal for gas producers was also sold. Being so isolated, forty miles to Casino and sixty miles to Lismore, we had no electric power, so the servicing equipment, tools and machinery were hand operated. Oxy-acetylene was used for welding. Later during the war we manufactured, in strong metal containers, our own acetylene from carbide. Those spare parts not in stock were obtained from Bennett & Woods in Lismore, the Caterpillar agents, Waugh and Josephson in Grafton and the Engineering and Supply Co. of Australia, known as ESCA, in Brisbane. We had another sideline charging batteries as most farmers and residents had a wireless radio which required battery power, At any time we would have forty to sixty batteries, which could be two, six or twelve volt on the charger. This was driven by a Southern Cross diesel engine running twenty four hours a day. Each night we would leave out batteries, oil, petrol and other items in the street for the five cream carriers to pick up early next morning for delivery. Surprisingly, we never lost an item doing this but it would certainly not be advisable nowadays. Being the main repair facility in the area, we had to contend, not only with vehicles, but with all mechanical appliances from perambulators, far machinery and tractors. I was rather fortunate to start in this primitive manner. With only the foreman and me in the workshop, I had to learn quickly, as if the foreman was absent, I was on my own. Our workshop held the NRMA Road Service franchise, stretching from Baryugal in the south to Woodenbong in the north, so the road breakdown service was a challenge for me. For this activity we used a Whippet ute and a Chevrolet tow truck. Reminiscences of Dave Hancock To be continued

11 A RECORD MOTOR TRIP On Saturday last Mr. Charles Dorrough, of the British Timber Company, with his small motor car left Coffs Harbour at 1.30 pm and reached Lismore, we were told, at 10.30pm., running the distance of about 150 miles, including stops at Grafton and Casino in nine hours. The roads about Coffs Harbour at present time cannot be in very good condition so the performance was a splendid one. The car is a Ford 16 H.P and came through the journey without any mishap or disarrangement.

12 Ireland Marks 100 Years of Ford Ford and the city of Cork, Ireland, are celebrating 100 years of Ford in Ireland. Henry Ford formed a company there in 1917 and built a factory in 1919 that eventually employed 7,000 people by It built cars and tractors that changed the face of Britain s agricultural and paternal system of government. Henry was very proud of his Irish ancestry. His father, William Ford had emigrated with his parents from County Cork during the famine in When he established his factory he admitted there was some sentiment involved. The editor of one of the exchange newsletters I receive asked his readers to give him stories about their favourite or strongest memories of Ford V8 s. I mentioned it to Todd one night as we were driving home. He responded with the story below. Let s hear form more of you guys, Fordson tractors became the lifeblood of agricultural Ireland, but before it closed in 1984, the factory also produced all other Ford vehicles including the last Model T ever produced, the Model A, Model Y, Prefect, Anglia, Escort, Cortina and Sierra. It was in the summer of 1966, I was four years old, Dad bought a new Mustang in Iowa City and I got to ride in it all the way home to Ohio. From holiday homes to garden sheds Ford shipping crates remain part of Irish landscape today. From Bob Trevan. You may not see it at first But the white spaces read The word optical The blue landscape reads the word Illusion You see why this painting is called Optical illusion

13 The Gingham Dress A lady in a gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the Boston train and walked timidly without an appointment into Harvard University President s office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard, and probably didn t even deserve to be in Cambridge. We d like to see the President, the man said softly He ll be busy all day the secretary snapped We ll wait, the lady replied. For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn t and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted. Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they ll leave, she said to him. He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn t have time to spend with them and he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his office. The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted, toward the couple. The lady told him, We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here but about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial for him, somewhere on campus. The president wasn t touched, he was shocked. H said gruffly, we can t put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died, if we did the place would look like a cemetery, Oh no, the lady said quickly, we don t want to erect a statue, we thought we would like to give a building to Harvard. The president rolled his eyes, He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, then exclaimed, A building! Do you know how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard. For a moment the lady was silent, the president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now. The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, Is that all it cost to start a university? Why don t we just start our own? The president s face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. & Mrs Leyland Stanford got up and walked away, travelling to Palo Alto, California where they established the university that bears their name, Stanford University, and a memorial to a son who Harvard no longer cared about. 15 SOURCED by EDITOR The Whippet Indeed the whippet was small, said to be America s smallest car having a wheelbase of only 201 litres of displacement. But the swiftness would be achieved more by the six cylinder Whippet introduced early in One of the sixes was taken to the Indianapolis Motor speedway where it averaged 91klm/h during a 24 hour endurance run, establishing a new American record for cars costing less than $ It was advertised as the world s lowest priced six, The Whippet got off to a good start selling 110,000 cars during its first year. Continued success helped pull the Willys Overland Company into third place in sales in 1928 behind Ford & Chevrolet. And it was a pioneer on the popular priced field by offering a convertible with wind-up windows as early as 1927, although Ford had produced its soft top Model T Coupe model with lift up windows beginning in 1915, Willys Overland was one of the first manufacturers to recognise the importance of exporting. By the early 1900 s the company that traced its beginnings back to the first Overland in 1903, was selling cars in some 37 countries. It also built cars in Canada. Willys-Overland took over the old Russell plant in Toronto after the Russell Motor Co. went out of the car business in Willys built cars there from 1916 to 1933, with a brief interruption during World War 1 to make aircraft engines. The Canadian Willys-Overland plant produced Whippets, and only the Canadian plant could build left-and right hand models, probably because of its relatively small production rate. The Toronto factory built the right-hand drive Whippets for export to countries such as Australia and New Zealand where vehicles were driven on the left side of the road. In this era of smart switches and powered push-buttons, we tend to think we have the latest in gizmos, but the Whippet had a pretty slick gadget too. It was called fingertip control, a button in the centre of the steering wheel that not only sounded the horn when pressed but also switched on the lights when it was turned clockwise parking first, then headlamps and activated the starter when it was pulled. Unfortunately all the wiring connections for this magic button were located at the bottom of the steering column under the carburettor where it wasn t shielded from dripping gasoline. The result was numerous fires and frequent rewirings. Needless to say, fight-and drive Whippets didn t suffer the same fate. The Whippet had a rear fuel gauge located on the left end of the gasoline tank, a not uncommon feature of the era. It also had four-wheel mechanical brakes, although it appears that the company didn t quite finish engineering the system; some had external contracting bands on the rear wheels and internal expanding ones at the front. Although Willys- Overland did very well with the Whippet, selling 315,000 in 1928 and 242,000 in 1929, it, like many others, suffered badly with the 1929 stock market crash and ensuing Depression. The company shifted its emphasis to one model in the lower priced field, the Willys 77, really a reworked Whippet, and discontinued the Whippet name early in The US operation would later be revived and would go on to gain fame by building hundreds of thousands of Jeeps during World War11, and then successfully converting this sturdy military general purpose vehicle to civilian use. The Jeep was the product that would enable the company to survive; it was taken over by Kaiser in 1953, followed by American Motors in 1970 and most recently by Chrysler in The Whippet had come on the automotive scene quickly. Then disappeared It is still remembered by people as the car whose name was inspired by a dog.

17 Missed Assistance A very religious man had a flood around his house and when the flood was up to his door step, a rowing boat went by and the people on board said, You had better come with us. But the man said, No, No. God will save me. So the boat went on its way. Then when the water was up to his roof, the rowing boat came back. We d better take you now, they said. No, No, God will save me, the man replied. Then when the water was up to his nose, a helicopter flew above him. Climb up the ladder and we ll take you to safety, they said. No, No, God will save me. The man drowned and went to heaven. He went up to the man at the Golden Gate and said, What s going on here, I asked you to save me! Well what do you expect, we sent you two rowing boats and a helicopter, came the reply. How to Talk to Camels A man buying a camel was advise that to make it walk he should say Few. To make it run he should say, Many, and to make it stop he should say, Amen. At his first ride all went well. Many! He shouted and the camel began to run- straight for the edge of a cliff. But the new owner had forgotten the word to make the camel stop! As the cliff edge came closer and closer he called out in terror, Lord save me, Lord save me! Amen! And of course, the camel stopped right on the very edge of the precipice where upon the rider mopped his brow in relief and said Phew that was close AAAGH!. Your names can get you into Trouble Once there were three friends called Shut Up, Trouble and Manners. One day Trouble went missing, so the other two went to the Police Station. Manners had to go to the toilet. What s your name? asked the officer. Shut Up, replied Shut Up. The officer repeated his question, but this time more sternly. Shut Up I said said Shut Up. Are you looking for trouble? yelled the officer. Yes, said shut up. Well where are your manners? asked the officer. In the toilet, answered Shut Up. If you groan and say Oh these are old jokes Well you re right I got them out of an old joke book - EDITOR
