Included in the campaign were media interviews across the state: Rapid City KNBN and KOTA TV, KKLS, KKMK, KAT, Hot 93.1, KSQY, KTOQ, KIQK, and KELO; Spearfish Black Hills Pioneer; Aberdeen Pheasant Country and AM station, Clear Channel stations, and Aberdeen American News; Sioux Falls KSFY s Good Morning Dakota, KELO AM s Kelo-Café, KELO FM s Morning Show, and Argus Leader; Brookings KJJQ's Afternoon Smorgasbord, X107 s Morning Show, Depot Radio s Morning Show, and Depot Radio Afternoon Smorgasbord; Yankton KYNT s Morning Show; Mitchell KOOL 98 s Morning Show, KMIT s Saturday Morning News Magazine, and KORN s Let s Talk; Watertown KWAT s What s Up? and KPHR Power 106 s Morning Show; and SD Public Radio s Forum Newshour. Estimated ad equivalence of interviews is $7,888. Placed newspaper ads (co-oped with CVBs) and TV/radio spots to run statewide throughout the week. The CVB Passport game continues in participating communities until June 13. Spoke to 140 members of the Corn Palace CVB and Mitchell business community as well as to 30 members of the Watertown CVB and Watertown business community on the impact of tourism on their community, the efforts of Tourism, and purpose of NTW. Interviewed by Rapid City Journal for news story on British tourists. Interviewed by KOTA Radio, Mitchell Daily Republic, and KCCR for news stories on Lewis and Clark campaign. Interviewed by KSOO's Viewpoint University: ad equivalence of $900. Fact checked copy for DK Eyewitness Guides USA and for South Dakota section of Woodall s Campground Directory. Fulfilled requests for information from Denver Post and assisted Chicago Parent magazine with accommodations and travel planning for freelance writer. Drafted plan for satellite feed of annual Jazz Fest in Sioux Falls, July 18. Feed will begin at 4 p.m. CST and continue through 4:30 p.m. Researched media list to send information on the Jazz Fest feed via . Developed plan for satellite feed highlights of the Historical Festival Live from Fort Sisseton in June, and developed database of 90 TV stations and cable networks to contact via with corresponding photos that are available on mediasd. Interviewed Sertoma Butterfly House and Hill City Chamber representatives for stories in Travel Trade, a Tourism newsletter sent to group tour operators and travel writers.

2 Met with Glacial Lakes and Prairies Birding Trail committee to finalize site selection and discuss guidebook. Worked with Department of Game, Fish and Parks to obtain maps for the guidebook. Began compiling a list of journalists and developing an itinerary for the Buffalo Roundup. Interviewed by Argus Leader regarding travel trends and camping via kayaking in South Dakota. Mailed 2,125 Group Tour Planning Guides to domestic tour operators in target market states of Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, and South Dakota, plus all companies in the United States and Canada that are interested in South Dakota products. Hosted eight companies (12 participants) on the spring group tour operator fam tour Explore the Lewis and Clark Trail and Experience the Black Hills in April. Participants were from Oregon, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas, Georgia, and Minnesota. Tour included stops in Sioux Falls, Elk Point, Vermillion, Yankton, Springfield, Fort Randall Casino, Chamberlain, Lower Brule, Fort Pierre, Pierre, Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, Eagle Butte, Deadwood, Hot Springs, Custer, Keystone, and Rapid City, as well as numerous attractions along the way. Submitted five events to American Bus Association s (ABA) Top 100 Events in North America for consideration to be listed in the Top 100 for Events submitted were Siouxland Renaissance Festival and Sioux Empire Ribfest, Sioux Falls; Lewis and Clark Heritage Days, Elk Point; Webster Area Pumpkin Festival, Webster; and the Great Black Hills Quilt Show and Sale, Hill City. There were also two events submitted by ABA members: Polka Festival, Mitchell, and Wild Bill Days, Deadwood. Researched scheduled appointments for Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) Pow Wow, a gathering in the United States where international tour operators and journalists have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with suppliers in the United States. Had 19 pre-scheduled appointments, but South Dakota delegation (Rapid City CVB, Durst Investments, Historic Franklin Hotel, Borglum Historical Center, Hotel Alex Johnson, and Tourism) ended up meeting with 45 tour operators and journalists. Gave a presentation on Lewis and Clark Trail in South Dakota for a press conference held by the Lewis and Clark states. Attended RMI Summit Meeting while at Pow Wow in St. Louis.

3 Was informed that Osamu Hoshino, who represents Back to Nature tours and helps promote South Dakota in Japan, that Back to Nature V which includes the Black Hills and Yellowstone was chosen as one of the top three tours to the United States by board members of the Japanese travel industry. Reviewed toursdakota.com web site. Discussed the development of a web site for ABA and National Tour Association members which would allow them to access show leads on a password-protected site. Shipped Guide to Indian Reservations and Art and photo CD Rom to Rocky Mountain International (RMI) Italian office for a targeted mailing to tour operators. Prepared and shipped South Dakota materials for the RMI consolidated shipment to Germany, Italy, and France/Benelux. Participated in conference call for 2Nation Tours (tourism offices in Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota) regarding budget, tour operator notebooks, mailing, and upcoming Legislators Forum in Brookings. Researched information and shipped supplies for Forum, which was rescheduled for July. Met with owners of Emerald Express and Emerald Tours to discuss charter flights and packaged tours from regional cities such as Fargo, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, etc. to the Black Hills Secured lodging in Rapid City and Custer in July for Vander Linden fam for article on movie locations. AAA/CAA Fulfilled requests for information from AAA offices and independent travel agencies in California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Outdoors Finalized itinerary for Great Faces. Great Birding Places. and made arrangements in communities for hosting of journalists from Birder s World, Sports Afield, Aberdeen American News, Argus Leader, and others; Rainer Hoy, German-based publications; and Martine Fayot, France-based publications. Locations included Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Samuel Ordway Memorial Prairie, Lake Hiddenwood State Park, Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, Sica Hollow State Park, Bramble Park, and Fisher Grove State Park. Followed up with attendees and provided additional information for their stories. Working on stories to be published in newspapers and WildBird magazine. Hosted a writer for the Argus Leader on a Lake Oahe fishing trip near Mobridge. Arranged media fishing trips on Lake Oahe for journalists representing Dakota Country, Sioux City Journal, Backroads with Ron and Raven, and North American Fisherman. Finalized the fall/winter 2003 mailing of Outdoor News and sent to 3,000 outdoors editors and writers. Stories include deer hunting, goose hunting, snowmobiling, smallmouth bass fishing, and bird watching. Worked on several media projects: Hosting of Great Plains Game and Fish and others for mid-summer Lake Oahe catfishing trip. Researched prospective media invitees for Governor s Hunt. Interviewed for grouse hunt for book entitled Sharptails by Krause Publications. Worked with Field and Stream Radio regarding a live broadcast in South Dakota during pheasant season in Huron. Worked on ideas for pheasant hunts for Hunting with Hank, Upland Days with Dash and Dez, and Dez Young s Wingshooter s Journal. Worked with Trailshead Adventures television on hiking and biking sites in the state. Worked on Jet Ski the Trail story with Kawasaki. Worked on pheasant/waterfowl hunt for Benelli s American Safari and with A Dog s Life and Outdoor World for upland hunt in Pierre area and waterfowl in northeast near Sisseton. Helped plan a pheasant hunt for North Country Adventures. Worked on International Snowmobile Congress annual convention to be held in June of 2004 in Sioux Falls. Sent press kits and other information to Audio America Outdoor magazine, Colorado.

4 Film Office Contacted by a film studio representative from Los Angeles regarding information on South Dakota and Deadwood. Have sent several production packets, scouted and shot location photos, set up lodging, arranged a meeting with producers, and arranged for a contingent to visit with the producers. Have remained in contact with the studio s media and public relations departments and the production crew for the shoot. Attended a film project planning committee meeting in Deadwood. This committee is trying to explore opportunities ranging from merchandising and promotion to licensing Arranged for a location scout of the Black Hills area for a film production studio in Minnesota. This story features the Black Hills. Rescheduled scout. Contacted by a representative from a film studio in Washington regarding a scout in September for an independent movie to film in the Black Hills. Contacted by a music studio in California regarding a potential music video shoot. Sent production packet and location photos. Contacted by a film production studio in Minnesota regarding locations for a television commercial shoot. Contacted by filmmakers regarding a documentary, requesting support. Was interviewed by KMEG Television, Sioux City, regarding the film office and the new web site. Worked with consultant to update the film database resume report form. Continued to update crew/service listings on the film database and scan in photo files from various locations across the state. Contacted by an association regarding a specific crew list. Contacted the appropriate production offices to request a crew listing. Put together follow-up packets for the Locations Expo and mailed approximately 85 to contacts around the United States. Sent production guides to production houses in California, Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, and Ohio. Information Centers Coordinated training tour for Information Center travel counselors. Stops included Pierre, Ipswich, Aberdeen, Redfield, Clark, Watertown, De Smet, Carthage, Huron, Dell Rapids, Garretson, Sioux Falls, Chamberlain, Wall, Deadwood, Spearfish, Sturgis, Rapid City, and Hill City. During the tour, we attended the Eastern Lit Swap in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills Lit Swap in Rapid City. Will follow-up with tour hosts in early June. Was interviewed by KSFY-TV regarding the value of the Information Center training tour for travel counselors. Currently we have 59 poster co-op partners. Poster space is available at Salem EB, Wasta EB, and Wilmot. Hosted 34 students from Jones County School District on a field trip to the Lewis and Clark Information Center at Chamberlain. Drafted and reviewed copy for the Lewis and Clark Information Center brochure, and sent to printer. The brochure explains displays found at the Center. Compiled car count information received from 13 Information Centers on I-90 and I-29 for the 2003 Memorial Day weekend. Count for 2003 was up 15 percent over 2002 for the four-day weekend. Hospitality For 2003, we currently have 112 individuals/businesses that have received recognition for hospitality with the Governor s Certificate, 21 have received the foil star for a second recognition, and six have received a gold lapel pin for a third recognition.

5 Arranged and attended five front-line training Have You Been To? seminars in May. Sponsors for the seminars in May were the Custer Chamber of Commerce and VB, Rushmore Mall, Rapid City CVB, Spearfish CVB, and Deadwood CVB. Trained 449 people at sessions in those four cities. Sent three announcements regarding the front-line training seminars to visitor industry members. Added information and registration form for front-line customer service training to sdvisit.com. Will host seminars in June in Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Huron, and Pierre. Travel Shows Researched dates for 112 of the 2004 Travel and Sports Shows via phone calls and the Internet. Inquiries Total FY2003 Inquiries through : Mail: 76,240 Internet ( ): 77,794 Phone: 23,139 Total: 177,173 Total FY2002 Inquiries through : Mail: 61,500 Internet ( ): 66,275 Phone: 46,531 Total: 174,306 This is an overall increase in inquiries of 1.64 percent over FY2002. (This does not include hits/visits to Tourism s Web site.) Calculated number of page views at 885,138 on Tourism s travelsd.com web site for the period of May 1-31, 2003 (missing two days), for a daily average of 30,522 over a 29-day period. This compares to calculated page views of 642,709 for the period of May 1-31, 2002, (missing four days) for a daily average of 24,720 over a 26-day period. This is an increase in daily average of page views of 23.5 percent over a comparable time period in Page views represents the number of times each and every page within the web site is accessed. Lewis and Clark Promotions Mailed 182,700 guides to in-state households, and 67,000 guides will be distributed at travel shows, at Interstate Information Centers, at regional tourism offices, and sent to inquirers. Fielded phone calls from South Dakotans who received the Lewis and Clark Trail Guide in the mail. Most called to order additional copies for themselves, take to conventions, or distribute at their places of business. Attended Bad River Gathering meetings to offer suggestions to organizers of the one-day event that will be held in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Signature Event in Created a flyer and an application form for the Signature Event Art Auction. Obtained mailing lists from the Akta Lakota Museum and ordered artist lists from other groups. A cover letter, application form, and auction flyer will be mailed to Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota artists. Met with several groups/individuals in Chamberlain and Oacoma regarding Lewis and Clark event planning. Native American Tourism Development Copies of the Signature Event Art Auction brochure will be given to Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates representatives for distribution. Attended a Signature Event Art Subcommittee meeting. Notes from the meeting will be compiled and sent to committee members who were unable to attend. Attended an Okiciapiye meeting regarding the scenic byway.

6 Photo/Video Fulfilled photo/slide requests from State Publishing, Priority Management, and Department of Game, Fish and Parks, Pierre; David Hauck, Martin; and Dockery Publishing, Texas. Notable Accomplishments: Awards and Honors Participated in America 24-7 project as one of 1,000 photographers across the country shooting photos for one week. Uploaded digital images for possible use in series of coffee table books. Fulfilled video footage requests: stock footage to a production studio in California for a show on the History Channel; stock and winter footage to Emerald Vacations, North Dakota; stock and Lewis and Clark footage to Northland Adventures, Wisconsin, for a hunting program; Rapid City shots to Media One, Sioux Falls; Mount Rushmore footage to a film studio in Colorado; and Lewis and Clark footage to Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, Montana. Travel Market Advertising Updated fall Giant Step partner files/listings and sent to partners for approval/revisions. Made partner updates. Gathered editorial copy and started rough layout with partners photos and copy. Placed ads weekly in travel sections of Sunday editions of Des Moines Register, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Omaha World Herald, Denver Post, Rapid City Journal, Aberdeen American News, and Sioux Falls Argus Leader to promote online vacation packages on travelsd.com. Publications Expect delivery of one million new state highway maps in early June. Tourism partners with the Department of Transportation (DOT) for this project. DOT funds the production/printing, and Tourism designs the back side and distributes the maps. Travel News Television Have received 97 requests to be part of the TNT program. Lodging properties and local cable companies show the TNT video in-house or on local cable channels. The theme for 2003 is Great Stories from South Dakotans. The purpose of the video is to entice visitors to stay in the state longer and make return trips. World Wide Web Completed additions and updates to the Visitor Services Directory, for a total of 4,417 listings on travelsd.com. Completed follow-up calls to 30 of 50 preferred partners (those who pay for the ipix 360 degree photos) to determine their interest in continuing with this part of their web listings 10 said yes, two said no, and the rest requested the information again. Rescheduled May ipix photo shoot of web partners and scheduled others. Added new online vacation packages and coupons and deleted those that expired on travelsd.com for a total of 35 packages and 41 coupons. Sent online package offerings to seeamerica.org. With assistance from the Department of Game, Fish and Parks, updated the Lake Oahe fishing information from the Hunting & Fishing Guide page under Events & Activities on travelsd.com. Worked with Montana Tourism to fix their broken links to South Dakota s web site on the fourparks.com web site promotion. Continued working on redesign of travelsd.com, made modifications to filmsd.com, and discussed solutions to problems with toursdakota.com. Updated addresses for Travelsmart, and sent it to 82,842 recipients. Submitted travelsd.com to the Tourism Office Web Directory.

7 Research Drafted questionnaire for a 2003 Visitor Intercept Study. Will survey visitors at the following locations between mid-may and mid-july: Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wild Bill Days in Deadwood, South Dakota State Capitol, Lewis and Clark Interstate Information Center near Chamberlain, Terry Redlin Art Center in Watertown, Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant in De Smet, Siouxland Renaissance Festival in Sioux Falls, Corn Palace in Mitchell, and Interstate Information Centers. Data collected includes trip characteristics, advertising recall, and demographics in constructing visitor profiles. Community State Day Hired Kahla Knapp from Pierre as the Sales and Marketing summer intern. Governor s Tourism Advisory Board The Tourism Board met in Sioux Falls, holding a joint meeting with Mayor Dave Munson and the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau s Council and Director. Both the CVB and Tourism staff briefed the group on their respective budgets and marketing programs, and discussed how best to meet future goals of both entities. Sioux Falls plans on building a new convention center. The Sioux Falls CVB hosted the group and visitors present to a dinner in the Pavilion afterwards. The Tourism Board continued meeting the following day, discussing fall promotion plans and hearing staff updates on promotional projects. Board President Dave Geisler appointed a committee of three from the Tourism Board to work with the REDI Board to develop criteria and rules to be used in screening applications for tourism projects under REDI s Tourism Sub-fund. The Board also approved the South Dakota Road Trip promotion to be coordinated by Tourism. Each Board member presented their individual marketing ideas. Mount Rushmore Independence Day Celebration Satellite feed of celebration s fireworks display will go live July 3 at 9 p.m. MST and continue until 10:30 p.m. MST, looping the fireworks as necessary. Will send contract to consultant for the feed. Met with committee to decide on media to contact, time to run, and travel arrangements for this event/feed. Designed flyers to promote the Mount Rushmore activities and ordered 10,000 to be distributed by Black Hills, Badlands and Lakes Association, Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism. Expect delivery by mid- June. Governor s Buffalo Roundup and Governor s Invitational Pheasant Hunt Held first committee meetings for both events. Reviewed recommendations from the 2002 events, and discussed appropriate changes to be made. Researched items/content for Roundup invitation. Researched graphics for Hunt invitation, costs of a few suggested gift items, and clothing. Great Events Yesterday s Tomorrows, March 18-April 19, Madison; April 29-May 31, Chamberlain; June 10-July 7, Belle Fourche; July 22-August 23, Hill City; September 2-October 4, Deadwood; October 14-November 15, Redfield, and November 25-December 23, Pierre: Received reports from Madison, Chamberlain, Deadwood, Belle Fourche, and Pierre. Following is a compilation of that information: Total attendance reported was 13,709 for exhibits and programs/activities. Programs/activities included oral history workshops, story telling, film festivals, musical performances, research workshops, fundraising, capital improvements, student projects, writing programs, and reading discussions. Comments from visitors included: intergenerational benefits, nostalgic, young people marveled at the vision of previous generations, provided opportunity to network with regional museums, and enjoyed involvement of fourth graders with elders for a program (process involved interviewing elders). Great Events for 2003 Siouxland Renaissance Festival, June 7-8, Sioux Falls: Completed event poster design and magazine ad. Assembled media teasers which consisted of a wooden frame with the festival s crest and weekend activities. Mailed to contacts at regional magazines, newspapers, and television stations. Wrote copy for classified ad

8 and radio spot. Placed ads in Mankato Free Press, The Fargo Forum, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Sioux City Journal, and Omaha World Herald. Placed radio spots in Fargo, Mankato, and Sioux City. Wild Bill Hickok Days, June 13-15, Deadwood: Met with committee to finalize promotion and media teaser. Wrote radio spot and classified ad copy. Coordinated printing of poster with local committee. Placed ads in Casper Star Tribune, Chadron Record, Scottsbluff Star-Herald, Cheyenne/Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Newcastle News Letter Journal, and North Platte Telegraph. Radio spots will run in Casper, Scottsbluff, Chadron, North Platte, and Dickinson. Indian Day Celebration Pow Wow, June 20-22, Wagner: Wrote radio ad copy. Received bags of fry bread mix from Wooden Knife and key chains from the local committee to send in media teasers. Placed ads in Sioux City Journal, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Lincoln Star Journal, and Denver Post. Radio spots will run in Lincoln and Sioux City. Crystal Springs Ranch Rodeo, June 27-29, Clear Lake: Set-up and printed material for media teaser. Designed and routed newspaper ads for placement in June. Drafted copy for radio ad. Mailed media teasers to contacts in North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Placed ads in St. Cloud Times, The Forum, The Jamestown Sun, West Central Tribune, Valley City Times-Record, and the Bismarck Tribune. Radio spots will run in Jamestown, Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Sioux City, and Public Broadcasting in North Dakota. Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, July 11-13, 18-20, and 25-27, De Smet: Drafted radio copy. Worked with pageant staff on ideas for media teasers, to be mailed in June. Sent LIW postcards to Girl Scout Councils in Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, and South Dakota. Sent additional postcards to the Sioux Trails Girl Scout Council in Iowa and to troop leaders in the Minneapolis area. Burke Stampede Rodeo, July 11-13, Burke: Wrote copy for classified ad, display ad, and radio spot. Frontier Days, August 15-17, White River: Wrote copy for the rack card and contacted the committee for a map of the area to add to the rack card. Lewis and Clark Heritage Days, August and 22, Elk Point: Finalized the promotion plan/budget. Wrote copy for classified ad and radio spot. Harley Davidson s 100 th Anniversary Celebrations, Thunder Across Dakota, August 23-25, Sturgis, Pierre, and Sioux Falls: Worked on obtaining logos for flyer. Held conference call with partners to discuss final promotional plan and work out details since we are still waiting for information from one of the partners. Quantity changes on the flyer will be made due to delays. As of May 27, Sturgis was still working out problems with their entertainment headliner. Mailed letter and sign-up form to the visitor industry encouraging them to develop online packages for the event. Continued acquiring supplies for media teaser. Great Black Hills Quilt Show and Sale, September 7-10, Hill City: Nothing new to report. Mickelson Trail Trek, September 19-21, Custer: Designed poster layout and sent to local committee for review. Will send 200 Trail Trek posters to bike clubs and organizations and include posters in media teasers. Contacted Department of Game, Fish and Parks to get first aid kits to include in registration bags for all riders. Corn Palace Polka Festival, September 19-21, Mitchell: Sent video footage of the festival to contact at The Big Joe Show in Omaha. It will be aired in conjunction with billboard ads that Tourism is running on the program. Webster Area Pumpkin Festival, October 10-11, Webster: Designed event logo. Designed ad for Family Circle magazine. Updated web page with new logo.
