The deadline for Courier is the 25th of each month! *Executive Board Presidents Message Fra President: I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and that the Easter Bunny was generous with the yelly beans. I can t begin to say how pleased I am with our Social Director and her assistants in providing our lodge with great food at last month s meeting. Thanks to Darlene, Crystal, Oryia, Cindy and John, we had a great spaghetti dinner with salad and crispy Italian bread, takk for måltidet. (thanks for the meal) Please look for her Social Directors message elsewhere in this months Ibsen Courier. I m also pleased to report that we have 20 plus people for the Parade bus to Brooklyn on May 15th, Anita has done a great job as chairwomen organizing the bus for us along with Norden and Norge lodges. Remember to bring your Norwegian flags on the aluminum poles that was sold a year or so ago. Keep in mind we also need someone to carry the Lodge banner, American and Norwegian flag. I will be looking for you as you pass the grandstand, and it will be me when I yell Hip Hip Hurrah Henrik Ibsen!! Looking towards the summer, our Sports Director is arranging for a half day fishing trip for the end of June. Details to follow. Our LOV weekend with Loyal Lodge is the last weekend in September and we need a chairperson to organize our half of the event by collecting the names of who will be attending. EACH MEMBER OR COUPLE PLANNING TO AT- 1 TEND WILL NEED TO CALL FOR THEIR OWN RESERVATION. The chairperson will only keep a record for the lodge. If our Social Director attends she ll work with Loyal s Social Director planning for our weekend activities, if she doesn t we ll need someone to assist. As I mentioned at our April meeting, Lindbergh Lodge has invited the LI Sons of Norway lodges to join them at Vasa Park in Budd Lake New Jersey on September 4th A flyer with all the details is being prepared and will be made available. Check out their web site Next month, both our VP Helen and I will be attending the LOV Golf Open so our May meeting will be conducted by our past President and Counselor Asbjørn Lageraaen. Per our Social Director the theme will be Syttende Mai and it s a pot luck supper, so everyone will need to bring a dish to share. Because it is Syttende Mai our culture month, I hope that Lapskaus will be a favorite. I will surely miss the opportunity to taste all the different recipes. My favorite was Odd s, he said it was his mother s recipe and he made it with turnips. Remember to be at the church by 7 PM. I hope everyone is well and that the weather will be perfect as we in the Sons of Norway celebrate Norway s Constitution Day on Syttende Mai. Hip Hip Hurrah!! Ken

How the fights start While shopping for vacation clothes, my husband and I passed a display of bathing suits. It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband's advice. 'What do you think?' I asked. 'Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?' 'Better get a bikini,' he replied. 'You'd never get it all in one.' And then the fight started... He's still in intensive care. May

Ken says he deserves to win but he s still the luckiest Norwegian in the Zone. It must also be said that Ernie refused the money and instead he and Peconic lodge bought one hundred dollars worth of 17th May pins, totes and magnets for their members. Everyone won! 6

8 Norwegian Culture Corner In connection with the 17th May Committee Theme for this year, this is the second article of Norwegian Polar Explorers. These men, Fridjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen were every Norwegian boy s idol. Roald Amundsen R oald Engebreth Gravning Amundsen of Norway took pride in being referred to as "the last of the Vikings." A powerfully built man of over six feet in height, Amundsen was born into a family of merchant sea captains and prosperous ship owners in As a youth he insisted on sleeping with the windows open even during the frigid Norwegian winters to help condition himself for a life of polar exploration. Amundsen developed a fascination with Antarctica from the time he first glimpsed its frozen terrain in Antarctica, a continent the size of Europe and Australia combined, had not yet been traversed by humans. Amundsen aimed to be the first. In 1903 he established himself as a sailor and explorer of the first order when he successfully led a 70-foot fishing boat through the entire length of the Northwest Passage, a treacherous ice-bound route that wound between the northern Canadian mainland and Canada's Arctic islands. The arduous journey took three years to complete as Amundsen and his crew had to wait while the frozen sea around them thawed enough to allow for navigation. Soon after his return to Norway, he learned that Englishman Ernest Shackleton was setting out of an attempt to reach the South Pole. Shackleton would be forced to abandon his quest a mere 97 miles short of the Pole. Amundsen studied all he could of Shackleton's attempt and began the long process of preparing for his own. He was as highly regarded for his skills in organization and planning as he was for his expertise as an explorer. Amundsen, who was thought to be "taciturn under the best of circumstances," took special measures to be sure members of his crew possessed personalities suitable to long polar voyages. Crew members onboard his ships knew he was firm but fair, and affectionately referred to him as "the chief." By August of 1910, Amundsen was ready to make his own attempt to reach the South Pole, although all the world thought he was headed in the complete opposite direction. He had secretly ruled out attempting to reach the North Pole, because Americans Robert Peary and Frederick Cook had already laid claim to that feat. Amundsen even kept his plans for a South Pole expedition a secret from officials within the Norwegian government. He feared that government officials would be hesitant to challenge Great Britain, upon whom they were highly dependent, in a race to the Pole. It was not until Amundsen's ship, "Fram", was well off the coast of Morocco that he announced to his crew that they were headed for the South, not the North, Pole. Crucial to Amundsen's success in reaching the South Pole was his use of carefully selected sled dogs. Amundsen's canine crew members had been superbly equipped by centuries of natural selection for survival in the Arctic. He referred to them as "our children," and revealed, "The dogs are the most important thing for us. The whole outcome of the expedition depends on them." On October 18, 1911 Amundsen's entourage set out from the Bay of Whales, on Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf, for their final drive toward the pole. His British counterpart, Robert Scott, dependent on Siberian ponies rather than on dogs, began his trip three weeks later. Aided by exceptionally cooperative weather conditions, Amundsen's party, passed the point where Shackleton was forced to turn back on December 7. At approximately 3pm on December 14, 1911, Roald Amundsen raised the flag of Norway at the South Pole, and naming the spot Polheim -- "Pole Home." He and his crew returned to their base camp on January 25, 1912, 99 days and 1,860 miles after their departure. Robert Scott's journey, on the other hand, was marred by tragedy. Scott wrote, "Our luck in weather is preposterous." From December 4 to December 8, 1911, Scott and his party were confined to their tents, forced to wait out a series of howling blizzards. As they ate away their precious rations, time slipped through their hands. By the time Scott's party reached the Pole on January 17, 1912, the Norwegians had come and gone. Scott's log records: "This is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have labored to it without reward of priority." Scott and his men had lost crucial time in reaching the pole and now faced the grim prospect of heading back to their base camp during the increasingly frigid Antarctic autumn. It was a journey they would never complete. On March 29, 1912, having endured blizzards and temperatures that fell to 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, Scott crawled into a tent with his two surviving party members and put down his final words: "For God's sake look after our people." Eight months later a search party found the frozen corpses of Scott and his men. They were only 11 miles away from a food and fuel depot they had left on their trek out. Roald Amundsen lived to experience other polar adventures, including flying over the North Pole in a dirigible in But the Arctic would eventually claim his life, too. While flying on a rescue mission in 1928, Amundsen was killed when his plane crashed into the Arctic Ocean. That same year, speaking to a journalist about his love of the icy Arctic, Amundsen said, "If only you knew how splendid it is up there, that's where I want to die." Asbjørn Lageraaen Cultural Director 8

9 W e can probably all agree that Spring is finally here and not too soon. North Dakota got 11 inches of snow on 14 April. A late and cruel April Fool s Day trick that I was happy to miss. Culture seems to be bursting out all over the District. I know of 3 rosemaling classes held or will be held at LOV, lovdefault.aspx we had a rosemaling class in Florida, a bunad making class sponsored by NORSK Carolina, at least 3 Genealogy workshops led by Blaine Hedberg were held by Resturation, North Carolina Vikings and Washington lodge and a workshop is set up for LOV this fall plus LOV has a Norwegian cooking class scheduled for this fall. (if I missed you lodge I m sorry) These events are in addition to normal cultural events going on at our lodges. Please remember to fill out the forms and get your cultural medals. The new rules for rosemaling seem to involve less writing than before. Some of these medals are designed specifically for our heritage members so let s get them involved now!! When it comes to Norwegian culture in the USA, Vesterheim and the North American Genealogical Center and Naeseth Library are among the leaders. We are honored that both of these excellent institutions are coming east to provide D3 members opportunities to study with them, a lot closer to home. Check our links page to find their web sites. Both institutions have great membership programs and you may find something they offer that interests you. On the genealogy scene the 1910 Norwegian census is online. slag=vis&tekst=meldingar&spraak=e I thought there was more information in the 1865 census but there is enough in the 1910 product that it will keep you up later than you want. April has been designated as Charitable Trust month for District Three. This year the trust is 40 years old. The trust has helped hundreds of members over the 40 years. It is a wonderful program and I salute those far thinkers who 40 years ago developed the idea and brought it to life. You will be getting a letter in the near future with more information on how you can contribute to the project. It is a wonderful cause. If your lodge has not provided the District Counselor with the name of your lodges Charitable Trust representative please do so quickly. A big pat on the back for Drammen Lodge 682 who raised FROM THE PRESIDENT Publication of District 3, Sons of Norway Website: Ralph Peterson President Kathy Dollymore, Publicity/ Director $450 for campers attending the youth camps this year. One of our new lodges shining brightly. Tusen Takk Drammen. Remember to get those campers signed up now. We have had some of the 23 rooms available to D3 members for the 2011 Høst Fest already taken. The telephone number for AB Tours is or Don t wait if this event is of interest to you. uploads/2011/04/hostfest2011version2flyin.pdf I m sorry to report that we are still losing too many of our members. We are signing up members at a great pace but too many members are walking out the front door. I hope that our membership committees and the membership secretaries are following up on our folks with late dues and are planning programs that will interest everybody. We need everybody s help in this area. The web site continues to get a lot of traffic. In May we averaged 232 daily visitors with the high day being 288 and the low 186. The blog seems to be the favorite section with the events pages next. Our Hurtigruten raffle is going good but you still have time to get your ticket. This is the Districts only big fund raiser and the winnings will be substantial so take a chance. Anne- Grete and I will embark 19 May on the M/V Trollfjord going North and I will post some greetings on the web probably on the 21st (around Trondheim) so take a peek at the blog. Where ever you are on the SYTENDE MAI have a great day!! Fraternally Ralph Peterson President District 3 Anyone wishing to take advantage of the District 3 Host Fest offer has to place their order by May 4. The telephone number for AB Tours is or Several D3 members have booked but they have 60 on their waiting list and they can't hold the rooms much longer. 9
