5 News from Chapter J From Tom and Darlene Chapter J Director What a ride!!! The fall color tour led by Jeff & Terri Curtis was a huge success, thanks guys!!! I m sure everyone will hear all about it, over and over and over again. Please keep in mind that every word of it is true. Our annual appreciation dinner was, as always, a great time. A special thanks to Don and Carol for letting us use their space again this year, and to Cheryl for setting everything up, to Jan for her work in the kitchen and everyone else who helped make the night a success! I can tell by the scales that I had a really good time :) As we move into November we also move into the Holiday Season and the dreaded 4 wheel events...we have some really good ones coming up too. Every year we attend the CMA s Thanksgiving Dinner and this year is no exception. As many of you know we REALLY attend. Part of the dining hall looks like a Chapter J monthly gathering, there are so many of us there. I m looking forward to seeing many of you there and the turkey don t sound bad either. Our Christmas/Anniversary Party is shaping up nicely. I hope to see many of the Chapter J family for a night of fun and festivities!!! As 2013 comes to a close we are already looking forward to Our work at MIS, and the Annual Burn Camp Challenge, our Mall Show and many other events are in the works. Please stay tuned for further events and I look forward to seeing you further down the road. Ride safe and Ride often. Tom & Darlene Taylor Chapter J Directors From Gary and Carol Chapter J Rider Educator Chapter J 2013 Couple of the Year "Why We Ride With Safety Gear! The other day I was leaving a store and opened my trunk and started to put all my gear on. First my coat with the armor in the sleeves, elbows, and back. Then my helmet, followed by gloves. I was also wearing over-the-ankle boots. Parked next to me, a man watched me put all the gear on and then asked, "Why do you wear all that gear? They changed the law. You don't even have to wear a helmet." I looked at the man and then I told him that people in cars and trucks are the main reason I wear all this gear. I then went on to explain that many drivers don't pay attention to motorcycles, even three wheeled ones. The helmet keeps my head safe and the jacket with the armor keeps me from having a severe case of road rash. Gloves protect my hands from flying debris and road rash. Boots protect my feet and ankles. In short, the gear equals the best chance we have of protection from injury should there be an accident. He then asked, "Then why do you ride a motorcycle or trike, if it is so dangerous?" The answer is quite simple. I enjoy the ride and this is America! It's my right to ride a motorcycle and share the road with cars and trucks, just as it's your right to drive on the roads. Remember, riding with gear on is a responsible act. Having safety gear in your motorcycle is also a responsible act. Just as going to the doctor or dentist, prevention is the best medicine. The next time you ride, think about what can happen. Do you have the equipment to handle an emergency? First aid kit, safety vest, emergency flares, fire extinguisher? Play the 'what if' game, and always ride safe. Gary and Carol Williams Chapter J Rider Educators Pictures Needed More pictures are needed to help Peggy create our 2014 Brag Book. If you are going to any events, please take your camera and get some pictures, also if you have a cell phone that takes pictures use that as well. You can e- mail, snail mail, put them on a CD or Flash Drive and give them to Peggy at one of our Monthly Gatherings, Any thing you can do is greatly appreciated Visitor Greeters needed We would like to have volunteers each month to greet our visitors and help them throughout the Gatherings, to answer any questions, or give them information on what the Chapter is all about and what we do. 5

6 From Rich and Cheryl Chapter J Assist Directors Well riding season is winding down for another year, fall is in full swing and soon the white stuff will be falling everywhere. Oh joy; it seems every year older I get the less I care for winter. We just got back from the color ride south and even though there was not much color there were plenty of good times for all who went. I had to leave early because my dad fell again while I was 400 miles from home, naturally. That made for a really long ride home on Saturday but it was a very nice day. I left the group as they were loading on to a ferry boat that was going to take them to the other side of the Ohio River. Sorry I missed that, I am sure they were set for an interesting experience. The turnout for the appreciation dinner was good as usual and Kim Holiday did her Sven and Ollie routines helping to make the evening very pleasant. The food was great thanks to all the dishes everyone brought and sure Miss Jan came bringing ham and turkey for all. It was a good evening but having many of the ladies out of town was noticed by all concerned. The turnout for the old Dirt j was poor again this year. It s a shame because the old DIRT J used to be a really big deal but it has slipped away over time. It s probably a program we should do away with unless someone can come up with a way to spark some new life into it. The Christmas party is coming up and the CMA s thanksgiving get together too so be there or be square, see you soon. Ride safe Rich and Cheryl Fetterman Chapter J Assistant Directors From Don Chapter J MEC Coordinator & Website Coordinator Hi! Folks The Newsletter and updated Quick List is ready. Quick List chapter_j_upcoming_events.htm Newsletter currentjnewsletter.pdf J webpage Michigan GWRRA Don The Don Czarnecki MEMBERSHIP CARD (be sure it s current) DON T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT From Mary Dodge Newsletter Editor Hi! Everyone October sure was a pretty month. The colors were beautiful. If you didn t have a chance to take a color ride, you might still have time to see some of the beautiful trees and scenery around the area, before we start seeing some of those white flakes falling. Those who went on the Tripple Nickel weekend trip sounds like they had a great time. Also be sure to read Terri s article on the Doe Run to see what all of us ladies that couldn t go missed. You know who, Randy, Monica, and Ron Kulwicki I think had just as much fun on their trip. Now you know who has been in 48 of our 50 states with his motorcycle. Who knows where Randy will take him next. Monica wrote an article about their trip so be sure to take a few minutes to read all about it. November brings the CMA Thanksgiving Dinner (check the flyer in this Newsletter for all the information on it.) Looks like that is all the things going on this month that I know of. But there may be some impromptu Dinner Rides, so be sure to check the Chapter J website, and your s for any announcements. December brings the Christmas/Anniversary Party which is a lot of fun. There will be a sign up sheet passed around this month at the monthly gathering so if I miss you (Continued on page 7) 6

7 be sure to hunt me down so you won t miss a great time. Don t forget the Secret Buddys will be revealed. Also sounds like their will be some music and pictures taken too. Remember this is also our 30th Anniversary party we are celebrating too, and since we are not sending invitations out if you run into or see any former members please let them know that we all would love to see them again. They can contact Cheryl@ or We need to have a count of everyone who will be there so no one gets left out when Santa gives out gifts. After our Christmas party, some of us are going up to Chapter Q s Christmas Party, the information needed is listed on page 15. Looks like that s it for this month, so be sure to have fun whatever you do. Have a great month and ride safe What I learned traveling south with Randy, Louie and a bit with Ron! by Monica Rodman Cooler, you need a large cooler. Why I asked, well to put stuff in! I travel light was my reply. My trike carried a large cooler that did come in handy when we found pecans to buy in Georgia. And huge Georgia pine cones as well. But coolers leak in the rain! I did not know so pecans were a bit damp the final night out, but still cracked and tasted fine. The bag of fuses that came with my trike were handy when Randy s fuse blew he had frozen fingers. So, the guys are fixin it, but no fuse. I locate my fuses and I had THE one they needed. Yea, no more cold fingers and we are off again. Watch Randy s bike for frequent stops! Wait for Louie to write stuff down at each and every gas stop, I think he is working on a novel. You are to wait out fog ALWAYS! So, euchre is a good pastime and while Ron is a wicked euchre player Randy and I beat em! Better luck next foggy morning. Blueberry-zucchini bread is not as bad as it sounds yummy in fact, thanks for sharing it Randy. Randy has a great eye for getting a super picture of the same spot I just took. And Louie has a computer full of pictures and slide shows. I learned that Louie downloads Randy s pics, as well as, his own. Some of their pictures are just amazing. Louie explains to me to look at the camera and stop fidgeting, if I want a good picture. Subway has a flat bread option, I now like Subway. This is good because we stop at well a few. On day two, we are on a beautiful curvy road that includes switchbacks, huge hills, sharp curves, covered bridges and Louie asks how my shoulders are doing. I reply just fine and he is surprised because he figured I would be tired. Randy informs him I seem to be over in the pool every morning that he is working on my remodel project; guess all the pool time paid off because the shoulders never bothered me once. And those scary switchbacks?; after the third one, no fear, this is fun. Watch Randy s bike for frequent stops. I just did what? You just rode through the Tail of the Dragon. So, amazing! WOW! GPS s are a pain and I will probably never own one. Let Randy lead he has a 6 th sense about roads and stops and such. Louie s GPS dies and Louie has a tough couple of days, until he gets used to its death---i bet Louie has a new GPS, as we speak because he could not get used to it being gone; poor GPS and poor Louie! We arrive at Deals Gap. I am looking at all the people and the bikes and thinking wow. I am here! I am finally seeing this place they all talk about, well OK! Louie makes sure I see the tree of shame and get some pictures. Randy says you ready to go, I said sure going where---there and he points to the start of the Dragon. I am going to do what?? Ride your own speed, meet us at the stopping point. So, that Louie takes right off; I never see him again, wonder how fast he rode those 11 miles and 381 curves. I go along at my own pace and after that road with all the switchbacks, I decide this is no problem. So, I rode the Dragon. Thanks guys for taking me there, though all of you have ridden it many time, I am sure. It was my first Dragon ride and I will remember it forever. Blow your horn through all tunnels. Did I tell you I had a 6 year old little boy riding the front bike, laying on the horn through ALL the tunnels? I was a co-rider my first time through the Blue Ridge Mountains, but it s a much more thrilling riding on my own. The 2 places I wanted to stop along the Blue Ridge were closed, Thank you Federal Government! But wait, do I hear another trip to the mountains?.hummmm. Microtels are great places to stay, thanks Ron for the suggestion. Days Inns are a mess and I will not stay in one for a long, long time. And the Comfort Inn in Live Oak, Florida was a welcomed sight after a long ride. Oh and watch Randy s bike for frequent stops! My side cover comes lose; I can feel it hitting my knee. Of course, we are on a major highway for a short time when it does this. I pull over, grab it; Louie comes up behind me and we toss it in his trailer, rather than taking time (Continued on page 8) 7

8 in this not good place for me to store it. Later when we stop, Randy has the part I need and it is all fixed. Teamwork! If you turn your trike real sharp trying to make the turnoff for pictures, you CAN lift your back wheel off the ground! Yes, well, I guess speed was certainly a factor! I didn t understand how the wheel could lift in trike class last Spring, but I have it down now! It also let me feel how easy it would be to flip a trike. No more fast turns for this trike. Logan County, Ohio is nothing but a bunch of circles, or so the GPS thinks. Do not, do not take off fast and lose your leader at night, he does not like you not being safe. But I felt safe and I knew we were to turn right; 3 people told us to turn right and the GPS wants left nope not doin it. But when the trike gets to the town limits, well GPS, help! Motels named on the GPS are not the same names when you arrive. Name changes are in constant conflict with what the GPS says. Randy finds state route 7 through eastern Kentucky heading north and what a great find. This road is the most gorgeous way to travel; over a 100 miles of beauty. We see color at near peak in this area, the best route next to the Blue Ridge. Nine days of no rain! It began misting a bit our last night out and it rained through the night. Our final day s journey begins with 10 miles in the rain, but the final miles where in the sun. You should travel with friends. Sixty miles from home, after passing over some rough tracks, Louie tells me my muffler is dragging. I heard somethin draggin sure enough the strap broke. Randy and I strap it up and off we go again, cold but sunny during our final miles miles..we rode. This trip was a dream come true; time well spent and memories to keep for a lifetime. Monica Rodman Haus Cheese Factory for the first time and enjoyed the various cheese samples. Everywhere we went was clean and inviting, from the Blue Gate Restaurant, to the Blue Gate Garden Inn, and even the stores we visited. An oh, the pie!! Ummm. Ask any of the ladies that went. We saw many an Amish buggy clip-clopping down the roads on our way Saturday morning. Even though we started rather early that day, 7:30 am, there was a lot we didn t get to see. So, maybe the next Shipshewana Doe run should be a two day adventure. Thanks ladies for a great time! Terri Curtis Just a reminder Being a secret Buddy, whether you re on the giving or receiving side is lots of fun, and a special way that you can choose to acknowledge someone in your own special manner. Lots of opportunities, for day brightners, warm fuzzies, and feel goods, and who couldn t use some of these in our every day life! Please send Mary Dodge any Thank You notes you would like the sendee to have and she will put them in the Newsletter. We will reveal our Secret Buddies at the December 2013 Christmas Party. Have Fun and keep your SECRET BUDDY guessing. Smiles, and Hugs Julie Hoover Secret Buddies 2013 Fall Doe Run 2013 October 19 th 20 th by Terri Curtis What a great doe run Shipshewana turned out to be! Decent weather, small crowds, excellent shopping and great food. And to top if off, a live musical at the end of the day. Ladies that attended this event were Kathy Heron, Monica Rodman, Julie Hoover, Darlene Taylor and myself. It was fun to show the ladies that were new to this Amish wonderland Shipshewana s highlights. But even Julie (a frequent Shipshewana visitor) expanded her knowledge by visiting the Guggisberg Deutsch Kase My secret buddy is the GREATEST!!
