We re off to a great start. Our January Second Friday Social was packed and a lot of fun. That evening we had the opportunity to remember two of our South Ponte Vedra Association past Presidents, John Houston and Egbert Heilman. We dedicated two live oak trees which are planted in the Presidents Memorial Grove next to the recreation area and our new patio. Our Social Committee met in January and has suggested a few new events that we think will be great fun. One in particular is Trivia Night competition at our March Second Friday and possibly at future Second Fridays depending on whether you want to continue it. We envision each table being a team competing with all other tables complete with prizes. If you ve seen these events before, they are always fun and I think we ll enjoy them. We welcome the participation on our Social Committee by anyone who would like to do so. Please contact Nancy Frohardt at for information. I d like to remind everyone again that it s time for our annual membership renewal and dues. If you haven t already done so, please send in your dues as soon as you are able so the Board can confirm our budget and our plans for this year. Also, please take a look at the Trading Post section of our Newsletter to see items for sale by our Members. If you d like to list an item for sale, please fill out the form in this Newsletter, which we ve included for easy reference. Or you can call me and I ll be glad to help get your item posted. What s In A Name? Naming Our Barrier Island The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a Federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government. The Board comprises representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the Board promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes as well as principles, policies, and procedures governing the use of domestic names, foreign names, Antarctic names, and undersea feature names. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about the official names for places, features, and areas in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the territories and outlying areas of the United States, including Antarctica. Any person or organization, public or private, may make inquiries or request the Board to render formal decisions on proposed new names, proposed name changes, or names that are in conflict. The St Johns County Board of County Commissioners heard suggestions from citizens for naming our barrier island. Historically, the name San Pablo Island was used to identify the landmass from Vilano Beach to Mayport, but this name was never officially accepted. Other suggestions included Veteran s Island to honor those who have served in our military, and La Florida Island. The latter suggestion was based on the idea that Ponce de Leon landed here on our barrier island and named his discovery La Florida. There are currently 21 named islands in St. Johns County. In South Ponte Vedra Beach, we have three: Pine Island, Little Pine Island, and Medicis Island.
7 A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPVCA TREASURER FREE AARP INCOME TAX HELP AVAILABLE Income tax help for individuals will again be available from AARP through their TAX-AIDE service. The income tax service is free of charge and is available to senior taxpayers of all ages. Membership in AARP is not required. AARP TAX-AIDE volunteers are not trained and CAN NOT prepare personal returns which have business loss, depreciation, business expenses of more than $5,000, K-1 statements or rental property owners. The tax preparation service is provided locally by approximately 40 volunteers, all of whom have been trained in both the current tax regulations as well as in the use of the IRS supplied tax software. Those using the TAX-AIDE service can have their tax returns filed electronically at no charge. Filing electronically will speed up any refunds that may be due a taxpayer. The TAX-AIDE program continues to grow and last year assisted nearly 2.6 million taxpayers nationwide. Locally returns were completed for over 2,000 taxpayers and 99% of their tax returns were filed electronically. The tax preparation service will be available from February 1 through April 15 at the following locations and times: Main Library: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Southeast Library: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Anastasia Island Library: Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 2:00 PM Hastings Library: Thursday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM Council on Aging: Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Ponte Vedra Players Community Senior Center: Monday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM All are on a first come first serve basis except for the Council on Aging where appointments are available by calling Taxpayers seeking assistance should bring with them: Photo ID s, their 2011 tax return, social security cards for themselves and dependents, and any documents such as W-2 forms, 1099 forms, or other documents related to the income they received in 2012 or any possible deductions. 8 GTM Research Reserve Partners with Local Schools to Restore Salt Marsh -- Salt Grass Nursery Program gives students hands-on science experience -- x This school year, the GTM Research Reserve is partnering with three local schools on a new project, the Salt Grass Nursery Program. Students will grow smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) at school and then plant it in the marsh at the GTM Research Reserve. The program will offer students the opportunity to conduct hands-on in-depth scientific research and monitoring as well as help the GTM Research Reserve rehabilitate an eroding shoreline. Students will learn about plants, wildlife, tidal activities and the changes occurring in coastal environments. Participating schools include Mayport Elementary Coastal Sciences Academy in Jacksonville, Sebastian Middle School, and St. Johns Technical High School in St. Augustine. "The development of the spartina grass nursery is a natural progression for our Academy of Coastal and Water Resources students, said Linda Krepp, career specialist at the St. Johns Technical High School. Growing of the grass seeds into plugs and then planting them really gives the students the complete picture of a living shorelines restoration from start to finish. Our students are thrilled to be a part of this effort." Each school is planning to grow over 4,000 plugs. The resulting 13,000 plants will cover an area totaling almost half an acre. Smooth cordgrass is important to the marsh habitat because it offers homes to wildlife and protects shorelines from eroding. The project also ties into the ongoing community-based Oyster Shell Recycling Program. This program uses oyster shell donated by local restaurants to restore oyster reefs along a half-mile area on the west side of Guana Peninsula. The restored reefs will promote new oyster growth leading to a revitalized coastal habitat and stabilized shoreline. Student-grown smooth cordgrass will be planted alongside naturally growing grass behind the restored oyster reefs. The grass will jump-start oyster reef restoration efforts by providing natural structure through root systems along the shoreline. Invasive Plants and AlterNatives -- February 21 st, 2:00 to 4:00 PM -- Because of our favorable climate conditions, invasive non-native plants thrive here. Discover which plants are discouraged from use in landscaping and how you can substitute native plants that look just as attractive and are not harmful to the environment. The presentation will take place at the St. Johns County Windstorm Training Center, 3111 Agricultural Center Drive, St. Augustine. Speakers include Tina Gordon, coastal training specialist with GTMNERR; Beverly Fleming, nature columnist and Renee Stambaugh, master gardener. The program is free, open to the public and hosted by the St. Johns County Extension Service. For more information, go to or call Sea Turtle Release at Guana South Parking Lot Three sub-adult loggerhead sea turtles stranded in the Cape Cod area and initially brought to the New England Aquarium for rehabilitation were released at Guana South beach. Upon rescue, the animals were cold stunned, meaning that their body temperature had dropped to 50 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. This causes the turtles body functions to shut down, they become comatose, and are typically found stranded on the beach. Due to overwhelming numbers of turtles stranding this winter in Cape Cod (over 200 animals), the New England Aquarium put out a call for help to sea turtle rehabilitation facilities along the east coast. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center was able to take seven loggerhead sea turtles from this cold stunning event. The first four loggerheads arrived in a Polar Beverage corporate jet and the last three were transported by jet by a private citizen. Both flights were kindly donated to help these turtles. Upon arrival, the turtles are slowly warmed up to degrees Fahrenheit, diagnostic samples are obtained for various tests to evaluate their overall health, and the turtles are typically treated with antibiotics, rehydrating fluids, and other medications deemed appropriate. All of the turtles are now eating and regaining their strength. The GSTC is expecting to get more turtles in from the New England Aquarium in the near future. Help Wanted Volunteer For Your South Ponte Vedra Civic Association Wanted one person willing to help with SPVCA building rental and usage. You would assist, when Janet Gandara is not available, with taking phone reservations and in making the building available to any group that would be scheduled to use the building.
