Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 2 of 12 The Hoak Times By Roy Hoak Chapter Director Hello Everyone! Where has the time gone? I can't believe that it is October already. Even though the calendar says it s October, the weather has been wonderful. I hope everyone has taken the time to get out and do some riding. We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather last weekend-- both days were great. On Saturday we had our scheduled ride down to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. I was finally able to get out and go riding with the Chapter for the first time this year. It was great having eight bikes show up. The pizza party at North Park was a huge success. It was great to see everyone. The weather couldn't have been better--good food and great people. The leaves are starting to change colors, the days are getting shorter and we all know that our days of riding will be coming to an end. If the weather continues to be decent, I might be adding unscheduled rides on the website. There will not be much notice so check the website from time to time. Marty will keep you posted. Our next big event will be the annual Christmas Party. See flyer attached to this newsletter for time, place, cost and reservation form. We will be having the $20.00 gift exchange again this year. I think everyone looks forward to it. There will be the Chinese Auction again also. Shirley will be collecting any items that you wish to donate. All money raised will go to the Chapter. This will be a short Hoak Times since I waited until the last minute to get this to the news editor and I don't want to be late. Until next month, keep your raingear handy... Rain Man Roy Words from our COY By Marty & Karen Miller 2005 Couple of the Year Well another month has gone by. On September 22, we went up to Quaker Steak & Lube in Cranberry for bike night. At one table we had Bob and Jayne Minsterman, Mike and Sue Mignella, Ken and Denise Chuderewicz, Roy and Shirley Hoak and Karen and me. Charlie Cox was seen there but he got there before the rest of us. We had a great time walking around talking to people and looking at the bikes. About 9:30pm, it started to rain and everyone was heading for home. On October 5, we had our Pizza In The Park event and had about 25 members attend. We were going to have a staff meeting but the light would not cooperate so we just sat around and chewed the fat all night. It was a perfect October night, not too cold. We consumed a great number of pizzas with all kinds of toppings. The day after the pizza party, Karen and I left for the Rally In The Valley that is in Salem, Virginia. It was a 370-mile ride that took about 6 hours. We went right down through the middle of West Virginia. The leaves were just starting to change into their fall colors. When we left on Thursday, the Weather Channel was predicting rain for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday so we opted to take the car. We only had about 2 hours of rain on Thursday but Friday was heavy rain all day. It rained most of Saturday morning and the sun finally showed up Saturday afternoon. While having our Saturday night buffet, we sat with Chuck and Lorrene Bowen from our own Chapter P at the Salem Civic Center. On Sunday, it started out to be real cloudy for the ride home and finally did rain for about an hour.

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 3 of 12 We are really glad we took the car because it would have been a cold, miserable ride. Even though it rained most of the time, we had a great time. Rescue + By Mark Forbes This month I would like to tell you about Rescue and Rescue Plus. This is a benefit that we either get by having a paid GWRRA membership or we can pay a little extra for you guessed it more benefits. Rescue and Rescue Plus are an Emergency Roadside Assistance Program available to GWRRA Members and their families. As a paid GW member, coverage while on any motorcycle is included in your membership. The standard Rescue program does not include coverage for motorcycle trailers. Something to be aware of since many of us have and use our trailers. Additionally, Rescue only covers the members motorcycle and not the members other family members and vehicles and many benefits of Rescue are more restrictive than Plus. Members can upgrade to Rescue Plus, ($25 annually) which covers all the registered members in your household while riding or driving in any non-commercial vehicle or motorcycle and Rescue Plus covers your motorcycle trailer! Benefits for each plan include emergency roadside assistance, mechanical first aid, auto rental reimbursement, emergency trip interruption, map service and a variety of other discount programs to help make a positive out of what could be a trip buster. Please visit the website below to review the benefits offered to us and print out a copy of the emergency phone numbers for possible future use. 4 Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 4 of 12 The Garage By Ken Chuderewicz MINSTERMAN ACCOUNTING & TAX SERVICE ROBERT H. MINSTERMAN, JR. ACCOUNTANT 1145 Brownsville RoadPhone: (412) Pittsburgh, PA Fax: (412) This month s Garage article will be another "product review". I recently changed my GL-1500's headlight bulbs. I had installed a set of the Sylvania "Silverstar" bulbs in a customer's GL-1500 and got such positive feedback on how well these bulbs worked that I wanted to try them "first hand". I purchased these headlight bulbs at the local Advance Auto Parts store for $36.00 a pair. They are rated at 65-watt high beam and 50-watt low beam, which is the maximum wattage that the GL-1500 wiring can safely handle. These bulbs were the H-4 base and installation was straightforward (just remember not to touch the glass portion of the bulb with your hands during installation as this will shorten the bulb life by creating a hot spot). Upon driving with these bulbs installed, it was immediately apparent that they are a vast improvement over the standard bulbs (and over the 65/50 halogen bulbs that I had previously installed). These bulbs display a bright white light, similar to a HID (High Intensity Discharge) bulb, which greatly improves night vision. Since installing these bulbs, I have been able to lower my bike's headlight aim to the point at which my high beam is now usable (the GL-1500 is notorious for a "too high" high beam) without causing the low beam to be too low. As I stated earlier, the white light put out by these bulbs greatly improves the low beam visibility and the high beam is absolutely fantastic! A tremendous amount of light is generated which illuminates the roadway for a long distance with a wide, flat beam of light. These bulbs come in both the H-4 base (GL-1200/1500) and the H-7 base (GL-1800). These new bulbs are a significant improvement over the stock bulbs and I am very satisfied with their performance. If anyone has any questions about these bulbs, feel free to call me or me at KCLubePro@Excite.com Quote of the Month As Reported by Susan Mignella When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. Chapter E s Poker Run By Jayne Minsterman Newsletter Editor After last month s Gathering, 15 of our Chapter members participated in Chapter E s Poker Run for Victims of Violent Crime. Mark Forbes led the way from Eat N Park to the registration point and Eddie Byers led the group on the 100-mile Poker Run. While the morning air was crisp, the afternoon sunshine made it a splendid day for riding. None of us were lucky drawing cards for our poker hands, but most of us did go home with door prizes.

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 5 of 12 Ice Cream Night at Brusters By Jayne Minsterman Newsletter Editor Thanks to those of you who participated in Brusters fundraising effort for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Thirteen (13) Chapter P s members hung around in the parking lot for quite awhile eating ice cream and talking. Quaker Steak & Lube Bike Night By Jayne Minsterman Newsletter Editor We had 12 Chapter members participate in Bike Night at Cranberry Township s Quaker Steak & Lube. While most of us arrived separately, we enjoyed dining together and checking out the chrome and extras on the 100 s of bikes that were there. (I ve already begun making a wish list for my Rebel.) As always, Rain Man Roy did not disappoint his fellow riders, as it began to rain just before we left Quaker Steak & Lube. Motorcycle Hall of Fame By Shirley Hoak Chapter Director Ten (10) members of Chapter P met on Saturday, October 1, 2005, for a scheduled ride to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio. In the group were Roy & Shirley Hoak, Walt & Linda Profota, Charlie Cox and Valerie, Tom Banks, Joe Pallotti, George Rosemeyer, Leo McCafferty and our newest Chapter P member, Steve Mannerburg. The morning started out cool and crisp, absolutely perfect for a ride. Even Rain Man Roy couldn t darken the day--there wasn t a cloud in the sky. Roy decided to take the more leisurely route from Pennsylvania into Ohio, arriving by lunchtime. The grounds of the Hall of Fame are very impressive and we were even more impressed when we saw that they had an enclosed parking garage just for motorcycles. We spent several hours looking at all the bikes and learning the history of motocross. We even watched a short film on some amazing stunts that these young men can do with dirt bikes. I find it amazing how they can twist their young bodies and still manage to come down on two wheels. It is definitely poetry in motion. However, I think everyone was looking for more on the history of motorcycles in general and seeing more old bikes. I do have a Trivia Question for you: WHAT IS THE LONGEST WHEELIE EVER? HOW LONG WAS IT UP? The answer will be at this month's Gathering. I think everyone had a good time and, the most important thing was, we all arrived home with the rubber side down. A Quaint Town Named Smicksburg By Shirley Hoak Chapter Director You may be asking yourself, where in the world is Smicksburg, PA? Actually, I discovered it by accident. It was advertised on television about their upcoming Fall Festival this past weekend. I thought why not, the weather was going to be beautiful and we could go check it out and ride up on our bikes. Since this was a last-minute idea, there wasn t enough time to call for an unscheduled ride for the group. So, I called the Minstermans, Bob and Jayne, and off we went. I think Jayne was only too happy to be able to ride her new bike. She is doing a

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 6 of 12 great job, having no problems at all. We weren't the only ones with this idea. We saw quite a few motorcycles. We even ran into members from Chapter E up there. Even though we had to take Rte.28 up to Rte. 85, the traffic was light for a Sunday. Once we got through the city and out into the country, the scenery was awesome. Smicksburg is a small Amish-farming town located in the northeastern corner of Indiana County. Since this was Sunday, we saw many of their carriages out for a Sunday ride with their families. We even had the misfortune of seeing one of their horses injured on the side of the road. If you are interested in directions to Smicksburg, they have their own website, After we found a place to park, we started to walk around and check out all the various little shops. We didn't get to look at all of them. Roy and Bob found the antique farm equipment very interesting and Jayne and I found some good deals on antique furniture. We just didn't know how we could fit it on the bikes. We were really impressed with the beautiful Amish handmade furniture. Roy and I found some pieces that we are thinking about going back with the truck and picking up. These shops are open all year. In fact, on October 16 th, they are having a pumpkin festival--something to keep in mind. After doing all that window-shopping, we had worked up an appetite. We stopped at the Amish House Restaurant. They served only buffet-style. All the food was homemade and it was very inexpensive and delicious, something else to keep in mind for a dinner ride for the Chapter. After we had something to eat, we headed up North on Rte. 36 onto more beautiful country roads, ending up in Tionesta, PA, and then heading home. We had two beautiful days in a row with no rain and Roy led the rides both days. Maybe the curse is over! Only time will tell. Sturgis and Beyond By Shirley Hoak Chapter Director Well, the time had finally arrived. The trip we had been planning for over 7 months was finally falling into place. We decided at the last minute not to take any Interstate Highways just backcountry roads. We left Pittsburgh on Friday, July 29 th, at 8:30 in the morning. The weather was incredible, brilliant blue skies, warm temperatures. The trailer was packed and we were both looking forward to this trip. The ride out to Sturgis on the back roads was a decision we would not regret. It took us 4 days, instead of the normal 3, but time was something we had plenty of. We traveled across Ohio, stopping in Marysville for lunch. In fact, when we arrived, we saw Goldwingers arriving for Honda Homecoming. The last time I spoke to the Millers, they were planning on attending, but we didn't see them. We learned of Marty's accident with the screwdriver when we returned home. We left Ohio heading toward Indiana, stopping in Logansport, Indiana, for the first night. Taking the back-country roads, we traveled through rural America, passing through small towns, some of which looked like they did 50 years ago. It was like time stood still. A time before the superhighways were built. It certainty brought back childhood memories. Traveling across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, we got to see why they call it the breadbasket of the world. I had never seen so many corn and soybean fields. As far as the eye could see there was nothing but cornfields, some of these fields were so close to the road that I could have reached out and picked the corn. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the country roads were well maintained and in some cases we were on beautiful four-lane highways. Some of the times we would be the only vehicle on the highway. This made

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 7 of 12 for a very relaxing trip, no trucks pushing us down the road. The weather continued to be amazing. We had just one thunderstorm (you really didn't think we could make the whole trip without rain now did you? After all, I was with the Rain Man) in Des Moines, Iowa. We drove out of it early Sunday morning. The beauty of Iowa surprised us, we were expecting nothing but flat lands. However that was not the case. We actually saw green rolling hills and beautiful landscapes, and even for a while were traveling on Iowa Scenic Byway. We even found cheap gasoline for only $1.97 a gallon, a real bargain by today s prices. On day four of our trip, we were just arriving in South Dakota, still over 385 miles from Sturgis. We decided to stop and do some sightseeing. When you are in South Dakota, stopping in Mitchell at the corn palace is a must. It s a really cool place. It s amazing how they can decorate with pictorial murals made entirely of colored corn, grains and grasses. The corn palace is over 100 years old now. Every year they have a new theme. Next we wanted to stop at the Famous Wall Drugstore with its world-class western art. This store survived the Depression by offering free ice water to thirsty travelers, and then grew into an internationally known block size emporium of galleries and attractions. Roy was very impressed with all the wildlife that was mounted on their walls. I had to remind him that we still had several more hours to go before we reached our destination of Hill City. Upon arriving in Hill City, South Dakota, the first thing we noticed was the wonderful smell of fresh pine. Hill City is located in the heart of the Black Hills and the Ponderosa Pines are so abundant there that it smells like fresh-cut Christmas tress all the time. Hill City is a century-old mining town turned to tourism. It is ideally located in the heart of the region's most popular destinations. Just minutes away from Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse and only steps away from Mickelson Trail. They even had an 1880 train that you could ride up to Mount Rushmore if you so chose. We stayed at a Campground called the Black Hills Camp and Breakfast that was located just 9 miles outside of Hill City. We had a rustic cabin and every morning they served you a wonderful breakfast. If you spent 5 or more days there, they gave you dinner for 2 nights. The dinners were out of this world. If you are interested in staying there if you are going out to Sturgis, they have a website, Every morning after a great breakfast, we would ride to various places to explore the countryside. One thing about South Dakota, you could never get bored with all the sights to see. There was always something to find to ride to. Sturgis Bike Rally may be the big draw for everyone to come and see, but the awesome scenery is breathtaking. Needles Highway is one example of the beauty. Spectacular granite-mountains, some that they have carved tunnels that you can actually drive through. Massive pointed rocks and evergreen trees everywhere. Another beauty is the Badlands National Park, where it s desolation at its truest, where you can see no sign of civilization for miles. It is ironic. This land of sharp ridges, steep-walled canyons, gullies, pyramids and knobs have been so ruthlessly ravaged by wind and water that they are picturesque. The Badlands are a wonderland of bizarre colors. We saw it during the afternoon with the blazing sun upon it. We were told that it is spectacular in the evening or early morning as well. We took time to see Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park and riding through all the little towns around Sturgis. Roy even got to do some fishing as there are plenty of lakes in South Dakota. He fished in Lake Sheridan, one of the favorite places to fish for rainbow trout. He didn't do any

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 8 of 12 good, but was just as happy to be able just to wet a line. In Custer State Park, we saw 100 s of buffalo roaming all over the places, but that was nothing like what we would see in Yellowstone, more on that part of our trip next month. We also ran into wild burros right on the road looking for handouts of any kind from (606372) passing cars. We spent one day in Sturgis. Hill City is about 75 miles from Sturgis and Roy didn't want to be on the road with all the wildlife that is out there after dark (some were 2- legged along with the 4-legged ones). Since we arrived in Sturgis exactly one week before the actual start of Bike Week, some of the craziness wasn't there yet. We spent the day looking at bikes, more bikes, girls and more girls. We met some really nice people on this trip. One thing I can say is that no matter where we went, someone always came up to us and asked Roy questions about the trike. Even the Harley riders! Most of them were impressed that we rode ours all the way out to Sturgis from Pennsylvania. We did not see one Gold Wing on a trailer. This really says a lot of the quality of a Honda Gold Wing. If anyone is interested in the route we took, we will share it with you. More of our adventure in next month's newsletter See Ken Chuderewicz for all your AMSOIL needs. K.C. LUBRICATION PRODUCTS (412) OR (412) Traveling Fools By Ken & Denise Chuderewicz As you all know, Ken and I were on the road once again. This time, we traveled to Nags Head (the Outer Banks), North Carolina. We rented a 12-bedroom house on the beach with 11 other couples. The rates are a steal at this time since it is the so-called OFF SEASON! Our plans were to take the back roads to The Outer Banks. This was a great trip. The weather was fantastic and the roads were well maintained. We went through Cumberland, Maryland, to Paw Paw to Winchester, Virginia, to Mechanicsville, Virginia, where we had to finally hook up with the interstate for a very short bit of I-295 to get around Richmond, Virginia. Then it was back to the smaller roads for the remainder of the trip. We made such good time that, instead of spending the night in the Virginia Beach area as we had planned, we headed for the Outer Banks for the night. We found a cute little efficiency motel along the Virginia Dare Trail across the street from the beach. In the morning, we had a quick breakfast at Bob s, Eat and Get the Hell Out! before heading to the beach house. This house was unbelievable. It was a 4 million dollar house equipped with everything. You name it and it had it--12 bedrooms, a TV in every room, 14 bathrooms, an elevator, 3 wet bars, a game room with pool and foosball tables, 2 largescreen surround sound TV s, 2 dishwashers, a dining room table that seats 20, 2 outdoor grills, sundecks on all 3 levels facing the ocean, a swimming pool and hot tub, a whole-house stereo system and I don t want to forget to mention the beach and the ocean right outside the door. This place was spectacular. Ken and I were the only couple on a motorcycle so everyone thought we were nuts. They couldn t believe that we rode all this way. We informed them that this was a very short trip for us. Since this was the first time for us at The Outer Banks, Ken and I planned our days touring the islands. We rode the shoreline

Chapter PA P October, 2005 Page 9 of 12 of the outer banks. This is a beautiful site along the water s edge. The seagulls and pelican fly overhead as the sand dunes line the road. As we travel, the sea mist is apparent on the windshield. We see kite surfers and parasailing along the coast. We toured the Wright Brothers National Memorial and climbed the largest dune ever in Kill Devil Hills. The weather was fantastic and the company was great. We played foosball, horseshoes, bocce ball and pool all week. If anyone is up for the challenge, Ken and I will challenge you in a game of your choice! Our biggest escapade on our agenda was to see all 5 lighthouses along the outer banks. Everyday we went to a different lighthouse and out to lunch. First, we saw the Bodie Island lighthouse, then we were off to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, this is the most famous lighthouse. We climbed to the top to have an awesome view. Next, we went to Currituck Lighthouse, this one was a little different than the first two. It was red brick and not white and black stripped. The next two lighthouses were a little harder to get to. In order to reach the Ocracoke Lighthouse, we had to board a ferry and travel ½ hour by ferry before being able to travel the island to the end to see the lighthouse. We are wondering if we get credit for the miles our bike traveled on water toward our mileage!? The last lighthouse of the outer banks served to be the toughest to reach and took a lot of pre-planning to achieve. To get to Cape Look Out Lighthouse from Nags Head, we had to take 3 ferries and travel 8 hours before reaching this final destination. We chose to do this venture on the day we had to leave this place of paradise. We left at 7:30am to travel the shoreline to make the Hatteras Island ferry by 10am (a 40-minute ferry trip). We had to make advanced reservations for 12:00n (2 days prior) for the ferry from Ocracoke Island (a 2-1/2 hour ferry trip) to Cedar Island then another ferry to Harkers Island (a ½-hour ferry trip) where Cape Look Out Lighthouse sits. This was a well worth it trip. The adventure was challenging at best. We found that the ferry operators like to squeeze motorcycles on as long as they see you in line. So a tip for those future ferry riders, make sure you are visible to the loaders so you don t have to wait in line! The Goldwing, once again, didn t let us down. However, when we got home, we did have to get a new battery. We just plain wore this one out! We are gearing up for our next trip which happens to be on Wednesday, October 12. We are heading down to Florida to visit with our daughter and my mother and then we will have to stop by Daytona for Biketoberfest before heading home for the season. It s a shame it has to end for a little while. I guess it will give us time to plan next year s adventures.
