July 2016 Newsletter Region 3, Unit 161 Inside this issue: June Minutes Membership Report International Rally Report August/ September Rallies 2016 Piedmont North Carolina Unit Officers John Becker, President Jim Hamernick Vice President Gregory Ray, Corresponding Sec./ News Letter Editor , Shelley Townsend, Recording Secretary Jerry Shelton, Treasurer, John Guy, Past President, Presidents' Corner, Many of us were at the International Rally in Lewisburg, WV. For Nancy and me, it was our first time. On the day we arrived, the local area was hit hard by massive floods with a significant loss of life and property. For the rally participants it was an opportunity to help - with significant donations as well as pitching in to help unload and sort relief supplies. The local people and businesses were very appreciative of our assistance. Some of the area tours were cancelled, but many were back on later in the rally. There were also many informative seminars - several of us took the Caravan Leader Training course (which is also good if you don t want to lead a caravan but want to know about how they work). We received a number of awards at the rally: At the Region 3 Picnic our unit was given its Merit Award for 2015 and I will pass on the certificate to John Guy (Past President) at a future unit rally. Richard Paschall won a Blue Ribbon (first place) for our unit directory. Richard works tirelessly to produce the directory, keep it updated, and add improvements - thanks and congratulations! The WBCCI Vintage Airstream Club has adopted the Concourse D Elegance model for their judging of originality, condition, and quality of restoration. Bruce and Kelly Redford won one of two top platinum awards for Betty Lou, a 1956 Safari. Nancy won a Blue Ribbon (first place) in the art competition for her jewelry. (And sold out at the craft show/flea market later). Several members have already signed up for the International Rally in 2017 in Escanaba, MI (on the upper peninsula). I am sure they will represent us well. Finally, my thanks to Bob Bennett for leading our caravan to the International Rally, and for his negotiations to get us parked in an area with gravel instead of mud! Travel Safe John Becker, Unit President

MEMBERSHIP REPORT FOR JULY 2016 The 59th International Rally of WBCCI was a real doozy, in some ways the best of the three we've attended. Why? Because although we had 9-10 inches of rain in a couple of hours on Thursday, June 23, which flooded White Sulphur Springs and surrounding towns near rivers and creeks, washed away houses, cars and trucks, and worst of all, cost 23 lives and made many more homeless, the response by Airstreamers was heartwarming. Airstreamers jumped in to help out, donating over $35,000 for flood relief, mudding out houses and buildings, unloading water and cleaning supplies to help the United Way provide resources for the local community, and supporting the merchants in one of their darkest hours. Homeland Security, the National Guard, Samaritan's Purse, Red Cross Disaster Teams, church disaster teams, and Airstreamers responded fantastically. Although many touring events had to be cancelled, and the fairgrounds lost power for about a day, and we had to boil water for drinking for a week, we Airstreamers banded together to pray for the flood victims and to help out in very tangible ways. The local grocers were glad to see us, and they were super at bringing in drinking water, fruits, vegetables, meat, bread--whatever the local folks and the Airstreamers needed, they provided. I've never seen such a resilient group of folks as the West Virginians around Lewisburg and Greenbrier County. This rally is just one of the many events that Airstreamers can enjoy and in which they can take pride. That's why we want others to join WBCCI and the Piedmont NC Unit. We had 14 members/member couples attending this International Rally, and several were first timers!! In June, we welcomed Tom and Susan Storrs of Greensboro (WBCCI member #18050) who have recently purchased a ft Sport Airstream trailer. While we were preparing to depart for Lewisburg, they were headed to Martha's Vineyard for their first vacation in the new trailer. I sent out a member page for them in mid-july. We also received word of another new member couple just before leaving for the International: Greg and Terri Porter of Greensboro (WBCCI member # 11373). The Porters have a ft Tradewind Land Yacht; I'm anxious to see this vintage Airstream! Their address is cgporter@porterandco.com and their mobile number is Please send an or call them to welcome them to our unit. As soon as I receive a photo and some other information, I'll send out their member page. As of now, we have 57 regular members and 2 affiliate members. A few days ago I received the listing of June sales of new Airstreams and mailed out brochures to seven new owners, along with sending them s, inviting them to join WBCCI and our unit. We may have more new members coming soon!!! Safe travels everyone...on to Galax for the Old Fiddlers Convention in August and to Kerr Lake for the September buddy rally. Richard Paschall, Membership Chairman 4

======================================= ================================= Fiddlers Convention in Galax Aug. 7 th thru the 13 th. Anyone who would like to attend should call Cool Breeze CG on to reserve a spot as they are nearly full. Our unit will have a get together on Sunday evening. Bring a snack to share and your drink. Robert has lots of entertainment lined up during the week day afternoons. Sounds like a fun week. Thanks, Bernie Lackmann ===================================================================== SEPTEMBER 8-11 "THE LAKE BUDDY RALLY AT KERR LAKE" We'll be lakeside, on the water, for the September rally at Kerr Lake Recreation Area, near Henderson NC. As far as I know, this rally will be our first at this location, and we're excited about having a great time near the water at one of North Carolina's premier parks. Many campgrounds at Kerr Lake provide excellent recreational opportunities, and we'll be at one of the most popular sites, Hibernia Campground Area #2. Many sites are right on the water, so bring your fishing gear if you have a fishing license and wish to throw a line in the water. Hopefully, meeting here after the Labor Day weekend, we won't have huge crowds, but we have 17 Piedmont rigs with reserved sites. Three more sites (one is for handicapped persons) are still unreserved, as of 17 July. One more site is reserved by Stedman Brown, but he probably won't be able to use it because he's on the Alaska caravan. So, if someone wants site #96, please contact Stedman directly via or Richard Paschall by or phone. A Buddy Rally means you can invite a friend who does not have an Airstream RV to bring his/her SOB ("some other brand") RV and enjoy the weekend with us. Reservations have to be made through Find the appropriate link to Kerr Lake Recreation Area, Hibernia Campground Area #2, to reserve one of the four open sites. The address for the main entrance is 2041 Hibernia Road, Henderson NC. Look for signs directing you to Area #2. This rally is hosted by Richard and Pat Paschall ( ) and Russ and Diane Barberio ( or ). Please call them if you have questions. 5

July Birthdays Christine Baker Chris Brown Orin Harding Breena Hodge Sherman Merchant Robin Morris Thomas Morris Carl Newton Joyce Porter Joe Schradie Billie Shelton Susan Storrs Tom Stoors Bill Townsend Anniversaries Brasefield Burau Hodge Luke Oliver Olson From your treasurer. I believe a good time was had by all who attended the 2016 International rally in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Disregarding the rain, the weather was great. Hardly used the AC, slept with the windows open every night. It was great. We had not attended an International rally in 10 years. The meetings and entertainment were the best I can remember. The orchestra and dance band never sounded better. Stedman and I attended the Treasurer & Membership meeting. It was very informative. We were told that we would not receive the 2017 membership renewal invoices until the middle of August. That's about 3 weeks later than before. Always before, I started collecting renewal dues at the August rally. This year it will be the September Rally at Hibernia park campground, Kerr Lake. This should be our most attended rally of the year. So all who attending, I will be asking you to renew your membership at that time. Those who are not attending and want to renew your dues early, Make your check payable to PIEDMONT NC UNIT for $80.00 And mail to: Jerry Shelton 2031 McDougald Road Lillington NC, Welcome to our new members: TERRI AND GREG PORTER and SUSAN AND TOM STORRS. Hope to see you soon at one of our functions See you in September Drive Safe Jerry 7

Notes from Lewisburg, June 2016, Region 3 President Matt Hackney In spite of adverse weather, a day or so without electricity, a boil water advisory, and more rain than anyone should see in a 48 hour period, the International Rally in Lewisburg, WV is a tremendous success. I wanted to send this note to provide an update to the members of Region 3. The June International Board of Trustees (IBT) Meeting was conducted using lanterns, flashlights, and a generator for the sound system and webcast. A total of 14 motions were discussed and all but one were approved. Below is a summary of the motions: Planning Guides and Merit Award - As we discussed at the Region 3 Rally, I introduced a motion to change the focus of the Planning Guide and Merit Award Program. This motion passed. The program will now focus on helping Unit Vice Presidents and Presidents plan for a successful year. The Merit Award will be discontinued AFTER this year. Unit Presidents who are currently in office will have the opportunity to complete the current application and receive consideration for the award. I volunteered to work on re-writing the Unit Planning Guide for consideration by the Standing Committee Chairman. That draft will be developed over the next several months. Rally Promotions - A motion to separate the Rally Promotions duties from the Public Relations Standing Committee was approved. The intent of this change is to place Rally Promotions completely under the direction of the International Rally Committee. For those who did not attend, John Frerking did an outstanding job promoting and informing folks Lewisburg and in West Virginia about the International Rally and WBCCI. He had daily radio interviews, periodic television news spots, and newspaper coverage. This effort was fantastic publicity for the club and for the good work we were able to do for the local community. This focused effort was a tremendous example of Rally Promotions. Public Relations and Marketing - A motion to eliminate the Public Relations and Marketing Standing Committees was approved. This change, one of several passed over the last year, is intended to reduce the number of Standing Committees and re-allocate those duties to others. In this case, the jobs of Public Relations and Marketing are being re-aligned. The majority of the information shared with the public regarding the WBCCI is by social media. With the recent addition of a Social Media team under Membership, much of this information will be disseminated by this team. In the case of advertising or marketing campaigns which require expenditure of funds, these duties will be re-aligned under the Corporate Manager (with direction and agreement from the Executive Committee). As in the past, all expenditures must be budgeted and authorized in accordance with the Blue Book. 8

Dues Collection and Payment - A motion to change the frequency of dues submission from Units to Jackson Center was approved. This change requests dues be sent twice monthly. This change will reduce the lag time for new members or renewals having their status updated. In some cases, members have had difficulty registering for Caravans, International, or Region Rallies because their dues and information have not been forwarded in a timely manner. Many units are using electronic funds transfer and for communication. This change improves information flow. Membership Transfer - A motion was approved allowing members to change Units once during the year. In some cases, members find that they have more in common with or enjoy the activities, rallies, etc. of a different unit. This is especially true of new members. In many cases, new owners join the club and a local unit before attending any events with that unit; only to find that a different unit better meets their needs. The Board discussed the need to match members with the units that best meet their needs. Updated Wording - A motion was approved to change reference to the July IBT with regard to approval of donations and gifts to the host community. The wording will now refer to the first IBT Meeting following the International Rally. This is needed to align with changes to International Rally Dates. Membership Numbers - A motion was approved which will release Membership Numbers immediately in the case of re-assignment or resignation. Previously, these numbers were unavailable for a year. The Corporate Office requested this change to reduce the number of frozen numbers. This change only applies to those who specifically relinquish their member numbers. Numbers which are frozen for dues delinquency or death will remain frozen for a year. New Logo - The IBT approved changes to the club logo. The new logo features the words Airstream, Rallies, and Caravans. The new logo will include the official name WBCCI. These changes better represent all facets of the club. The new logo will be phased in and use of items with the old logo are acceptable. The new logo is shown below: 9

National and Special Event Rallies - Changes were approved to expand the definition of National and Special Event Rallies. The changes will reduce some requirements which previously excluded many events from being sponsored, advertised, or promoted as a National or Special Event Rally. The new definition will allow shorter events, rallies near a unique attraction or location, and rallies featuring the use, history, or lifestyle of Airstream Travel and the WBCCI. This change was requested by the National and Special Event Standing Committee Chairman. Unit Emblems and Flag - New Unit Emblems were approved for the Quebec Unit, Utah s Wasatch Unit, and Lake Tahoe Aistream Club. A Unit Flag was approved for the Alamo Unit. In addition to the IBT, John and Eileen Frerking planned and hosted a BBQ for the Region 3 attendees at the International Rally. There were approximately 350 people at the gathering. We installed your new Region 3 Vice Presidents, John Leake - 1st VP and Randy Godfrey - 2nd VP. Those in attendance also raised over $1800 for flood relief for community hosting us in Lewisburg, and decided to give the funds to the Salvation Army specifically for flood relief in the area. As you will hear, the WBCCI raised tens of thousands of dollars for the victims in the area. In addition, they dedicated many volunteer hours to helping out. The community was grateful for our donations and our efforts. The most important thing we did for the community, however, was come, stay, and support the local businesses. The WBCCI brings much to the community when we bring a rally. The last thing I will report is the installation of officers. There were no surprises. The delegates elected the slate; including the election of our first woman. Mona Heath was installed as International 3rd Vice President. She will bring fresh ideas to the club. Finally, Region 3 has a new President. Please give your warmest greeting and full support to John Frerking. He and Eileen were tireless workers in Lewisburg and will do a fantastic Job for Region 3. Beth and I really enjoyed serving Region 3. Thank you all for your help and support. We hope to see you down the road. Matt Hackney 2016 Region 3 President 10
