Official Publication for Members of the Golden Hills Mustang Club Established 1982 VOLUME XXXIV, 5 MAY 2016 As usual we were watching the weather for our annual road trip to Redding for Kool April Nites. It looked like we were going to get a little El Nino rain this year and we did. This is one of the biggest and best shows in Northern California, attracting around 2,000 cars and trucks. This is a weeklong event with something happening every day. This year our large group of GHMC members and Napa Valley Cruisers arrived on different days. Some of us traveled to Redding on Wednesday, while others arrived Thursday and a few came in on Friday. NVC members, Brad & Debbie Parsons were invited to show their 1930 Model A Truck inside the auditorium with all the very special cars and trucks. It was last year s Best of Show winners at our car show and you will see it on our T-shirt at this year s show. Kirk & Cheryl Stafford, Mike & Tammy Robinette, Yvonne Westberg and Dan & Norma McCabe joined the Parsons on Wednesday to help Brad set up his display. Once the display was set up, we were free to relax and enjoy a great dinner at Cattlemen s while we got ready for a fun week. Coming to town early gave us a chance to explore the area and take advantage of some of the events. There were several Show-n-Shines at local establishments, the High schools invited car owners to talk to the students about the cars and answer questions they might have, and there is an abundance of beautiful scenery to enjoy.. Norma and I drove to Shasta Dam to see the water level and found a Show-n-Shine put on by the Shasta Dam visitor center. We met some very nice people and got invited to take part in a classic car parade across the top of Shasta Dam. What an unexpected treat! Most of our group showed up on Thursday including one of our founding members, Scott McNair. He lives in Utah and went to the big Fabulous Fords Forever show at Knott s Berry Farm and decided to add this show to his West Coast trip. We are glad you could join us, Scott. Once everyone checked into the hotel we made sure they went to the show site to register and get their goodie bags. You must have your Kool April Nite window sticker to participate in the Friday nights cruise and your wristbands to attend the concerts. (continued on page 4)

Hello Mustang Family, Here comes our annual car show on May 21, Contact Chris Snow if you have finally found a calling and want to contribute to this great event. The June 23 rd - 26 th camping trip is fast approaching. Please contact Tammy & Mike Robinette as there are only a couple of RV sites left. If the few remaining sites are not claimed very soon they will be given up. Speaking of June, it is a very busy month for us! The garage sale is on June 11 th. If you have any items to donate, please contact Frank Lopez. Come out on Friday June 10 th to help sort and price and all day June 11 th to help sell. This is the main fundraiser for our scholarships!!! On June 18 th we have our annual display at Napa Ford which is always a great day. Good food, nice prizes, and lots of fun. The High Five Tour will be in our area from June 19 th to June 28 th when Craig Beckley and the McCabes take it to Medford, Oregon. You will be able to see and sign the Shelby GT350 and support Wounded Warriors Family Support. See inside this issue for more High Five Tour information. I can tell you it feels good to bring in items for the troop and raffle prizes for our general meeting. This is something easy you can do and it really helps things go a long way. As always, bring something new and most anything will work. This helps to boost our scholarship fund. Thanks to all who donated last month! See you at the 32 nd Annual Biggest Little Car Show! See you out on the trail.-tim Leathers MUSTANG TRIVIAL PURSUIT GAME Submit a mustang related trivia question. Your question will be posted in the newsletter and answers will be collected at the next general meeting. This month s question is submitted by Brian Evans: "This car has been on the road for many decades, and belongs to what club member? Hint: Beach Boys song 3

(continued from page 1) Friday is a day to explore the area and try to see some of the activities. This year most of us stayed close to the hotel because of the rain. It wasn t just a shower... it was a downpour, complete with THUNDER and LIGHTNING and 2 inches of rain! It slowed down by the time it was ready to leave for our early dinner at Logan s Road House, otherwise known as the Peanut Wars. This year we made a reservation for 25 and ended up with 34 for dinner. The wait staff was great and able to seat us all. After another great dinner we were happy to see that the rain was easing up and it stopped just in time for the cruise. Cars were cleaned and dried and off we went. The rain did not keep the locals from coming out and cheering us on as we made our way around the 2½ mile cruise. After the cruise some of the group took advantage of the free concert at the Mega Tent while most of us went to bed early in anticipation of Saturday morning s O Dark thirty wake-up. Saturday morning it was cloudy but dry, when we assembled at 6:15 to drive over to the show site. Once inside the convention center, we had to gather our group again as some of us got separated in the 3 lanes going into the show. Mike and Tammy led the group this time, and managed to secure a great spot on the grass for our group of 11. Thanks, Tammy for getting us high and dry this year! After a little car cleaning it was time for the Asphalt Cowboys pancake breakfast held in the Mega Tent. It is amazing to watch all the hungry people walk through the production line where they are serving up the pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. They feed several thousand people in just a few hours. It s a great deal for $5.00 and it helps benefit the community. At 9 am we paused and took off our hats for the National Anthem. This year s beautiful voice belonged to a 10-year-old local girl who nailed it like an American Idol. The rest of the day was spent talking to people and checking out the nearly 2,000 cars and trucks. There is Absolutely No Way to see them all in addition to visiting Turtle Bay and walking over the Sun Dial bridge, but Tony McGrath and Sue Calvert tried to. Needless to say, they were too tired to go to the concert that night. This was Tony s first time at this show and he is already planning to go again next year. Also first timers, Brian and Tammy Evans who promised to bring their classic Shelby next year. On Sunday Morning many of the group departed early to get back to their lives in the big city, while some of us got to languish over the free breakfast in the Rose Room and took our time checking out. We didn t have to hurry because we were staying for the awards that didn t happen until noon. Two members of our group had won awards, so we wanted to stay and take pictures for them. Ron & Charlotte Jayne of the Napa Valley Cruisers took home a beautiful plaque for their 1930 Custom Packard Sedan. GHMC and NVC member Yvonne Westberg, who drove her 1940 Ford Business Coupe all by herself to Redding, brought home the Fat Cat Pick Award - for her fat fenders, we hope! Her Coho Salmon colored beauty was featured on our shirts and coin back in After the awards were over we were able to help Brad take down his display. Many hands made the work light and we were on the road in record time. Another stop for food at Granzella s on the way home wrapped up a wonderful week! Thanks to all who went with us this year and we hope you all had as good a time as we did! See you next year in Redding! -Dan & Norma McCabe 4

May HA Award -Dan McCabe It is sort of a given that somebody will earn the H.A. Award on a long road trip as people tend to watch closer when you travel in a group. I was trying to be good but sometimes the little things get you when you least expect it. We drove our 69 Mustang to Redding for Kool April Nites and I wore my most comfortable pair of shorts. (Comfortable means old!) At our lunch stop I made sure that I locked the Mustang and put the keys in my pocket. After lunch I started looking for my keys when Kirk Stafford asked if these looked familiar, holding up a pair of Mustang keys with a well worn tri-bar key fob. He found them on the ground about 10 steps from our Mustang. Norma put her hand in my pocket and her fingers came out the leg of my shorts. My keys had fallen out through that hole in my pocket. I knew right then Kirk would nominate me for my Holey Pocket at the next meeting. The DVMA 18 th Annual Back to Lemans! Car Show Saturday May 7 th drew a rain soaked 69 cars this year, including the Paulsells and Wiederspahns from GHMC. Rain off and on throughout the day may have put a damper on the number of cars but not on the fun. This was the 3 rd year for the show at the Streets of Brentwood which provides plenty of stores for shopping and restaurants for food. After parking and some quick detailing we were off to check out the cars and make our picks. Dodging raindrops we managed to fill out our ballots and turn them in before heading over to Mel s Diner for some burgers and fries for lunch. Along with the general raffle there were a couple of vendors with items for sale and Bill Brandt Ford had several new cars on display. Soon it was award time, so we gathered around as the class and specialty awards were handed out to deserving owners. The Wiederspahns won their class 2010-Present Mustangs and GHMC having won the club participation award for the last 3 years lost out to Mustangs of the San Joaquin by 1 car! The DVMA put on another great show; I know I ll be back so plan on joining us next year! -Robin Paulsell 5

Woodland Car Show and Cruise May 7, 2016 Saturday morning was a glorious day if you like clouds and rain. The Staffords and Robinettes came up to Black Bear for Breakfast at 9:30a.m. We had a great breakfast; while someone waited for their bear claw, as someone else did a double take, and all of a sudden he was drinking coffee in his tea cup. Too much fun! The show field was filled with a wide range of beautiful vehicles. I may be wrong, but I think our club cars looked great if not better that other examples. By the way, have you seen Kirk s fastback lately? If not, you are going to be impressed! Lunch was had at Burger City and the burgers and onion rings were perfect along with coverage of the Kentucky Derby. A few raffle prizes found new homes with our mustang club members. Hip, hip hurray. I am hoping maybe next year I may even have a car entered. -Tim Leathers Sunshine Corner Get Well Cards were sent to Bob Loya, who had minor surgery and Louie Moore who had surgery. A card and flowers were sent to Gayle and Jerry Houseman whose son Norman Root passed away. Sympathy cards were sent to Patty Bowers whose father passed away and to Robin Herman, whose mother passed away. If anyone knows of any member in need of some Sunshine, please let me know! The Road to Recovery For our nation s wounded warriors and their families, the road to recovery can be a long and difficult struggle. As combat-wounded veterans work to heal from injuries both physical and psychological, their families deal with the challenges of making ends meet and raising children all while caring for their injured loved ones. The High Five Tour is an opportunity for millions of Americans to show their support and say thank you to the thousands of military families who have made sacrifices for our freedom. This year s High Five Tour will be truly unique as Ford Mustang clubs throughout the country get behind the wheel of the red, white and blue, 2016 Mustang. The clubs will unite to bring the car to events across the nation, including stops at Ford dealerships, community events, veterans organizations, military bases and race tracks, among others. During the tour, Wounded Warriors Family Support invites Americans of all walks of life to show their support for military families by visiting an event on the tour and signing the car with a message of support to our country s veterans and their families. The High Five Tour 2016 s mission is also to raise funds to provide veteran programs for combat-wounded veterans and their their families. We need your help to meet our goal. Every donation, large or small, is deeply appreciated and helps us meet our goal of making these veteran programs a reality for many deserving veterans and their families. 7

UAW-FORD MOTOR COMPANY MANTECA WAREHOUSE OPEN HOUSE on APRIL 23 RD 2016 Once again club member Michael Taylor who runs the facility invited GHMC to the annual open house. I met the Wiederspahns and Andrew Dagenet at the Suisun park n ride for the drive to Manteca and the event. Tom and Rosie Andris from Sacramento met us there bringing the total count to 5 GHMC Mustangs including Michael s 66 Coupe. Some of the warehouse employees had cars there along with a couple of locals. This event is also a fund raiser for the March of Dimes. They had a bounce house and face painting for the kids, and gave several tours of the warehouse. They also provided a free lunch and had some awards for the car show. This facility provides small parts for 90 Ford Dealers in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. It is also one of three nationwide warehouses for large parts including engines, transmissions, and body parts. It was a nice relaxing day we had a great time representing the Golden Hills Mustang Club. A huge thank you to Michael and his staff for putting on this event and raising around $1000 for the March of Dimes at the Open House. -Robin Paulsell 8
