1 TV 1. News Stories March 17-28, 2014 Colin Babiuk, public relations and several of his students were interviewed about the crisis communication surrounding the premier. 2. CTV had coverage of the individuals protesting the renovations of the squash courts Radio Dr. Chaldeans Mensah was interviewed live on CTV's NewsNet about the resignation of premier Redford. This live 5 minute interview was featured across Canada on CTV NewsNet. Dr. Chaldeans Mensah appeared live on CTV Morning News to discuss the resignation of premier Redford. This story features Jamie Wagner, a student in the massage therapy program. Jamie has been blind since he was involved in a car accident five years ago. Jeff Moggach, chair of the program was also interviewed for this segment. Dr. Torah Kachur, biological sciences discussed the weather across Canada this year and how the forecasters predicted a milder-than-normal winter, as opposed the Farmer's Almanac that predicted a much colder than usual winter across the country. This segment was aired in 18 cities across Canada. Two MacEwan University students participated in a panel discussion about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that is currently going on in Edmonton. The students shred their thoughts about the conference. MacEwan University Page 1

2 3. Dr. Torah Kachur, biological sciences discussed how the weather is hampering the production of one of Canada's cottage industries, Maple Syrup Print/Online 1. MacEwan's fine art gala returns This article in Metro discussed the Fine Art Student Gala at CFAC. See below University adding five-story facility This article discusses the new Centre for the Arts and Communications at the City Centre Campus. Here's a part of the story: "MacEwan University is an important partner in Campus Alberta and I'm excited that the university will be able achieve its vision of a single, sustainable downtown campus," said Dave Hancock, minister of innovation and advanced education. "This expansion puts students first by consolidating classes downtown. Students will have greater access to the services they need to be successful, including modern facilities, recreation centres, libraries, residence and more amenities." 20 Questions: Grant MacEwan University academic Peter Roccia This popular weekly segment featured Assistant Professor, Peter Roccia from the Bachelor of Communication Studies. 3 Is Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi interested in replacing Alison Redford Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, political science was interviewed about the possibility of Calgary mayor running for the leadership of the P.C. Party. Here's a part of the story: 4. "I have difficulty envisioning him as a leader of the current PC caucus," MacEwan University's Dr. Chaldeans Mensah told Yahoo in an exchange. "Nenshi, while strong in Calgary in terms of popular support, might have problems gaining support in rural Alberta. He is very articulate and well-situated for his current position, but it might be difficult for him to transfer his leadership skills from city hall to a restless PC party. I don't see a Nenshi candidacy as posing a serious threat to the Wildrose in rural ridings. In short, Nenshi's popularity in Calgary, perhaps even in parts of Edmonton, is not necessarily transferable to the provincial scene." Next PC leader must have keen awareness of social issues in urban centres, advocacy group says Dr. John Soroski, political science was interviewed about social issues that will the new PC leader will have to address. Here's a part of the story: 5. John Soroski, political scientist at MacEwan University, said the next Tory leader would have trouble getting those progressive voters back into the Tory fold. In fact, the next Tory leader will have trouble convincing people that he or she offers any real change - given Redford's failure to implement her agenda. "A sensible progressive voter won't give them a second chance," said Soroski. MacEwan University Page 3

4 What Albertans should expect from the PCs in the post-redford era Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, political science was interviewed about the possibility of the new PC leader calling a snap election. Here's a part of the story: MacEwan University political analyst Chaldeans Mensah says it would be "foolhardy for a new leader to even entertain the thought of a new election." Instead, Mensah says, the new leader should use the remaining mandate to prove him or herself to voters ahead of the 2016 race. Letter-to-the-editor: Harold Anderson and Jacqueline Greenblatt both wrote letters-to-the-editor about MacEwan University renovations plans for the four squash courts. See below 8. Alberta's Wildrose charge ahead as Tories seek to reinvent themselves Dr. Chladeans Mensah was interviewed about the Wildrose Party and there chances of winning the next provincial election. 9. MacEwan's student union joins Alberta Council This story is about the Students' Association MacEwan University joining the Council of Alberta University Students (CAUS). See below MacEwan University Page 4

5 10. Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, political science was interviewed about the $50,000 fee to enter the Tory leadership race. Here's a part of the story: "This campaign is going to be a campaign that will benefit the established names who have done this before, have the connections and know the organizational requirements to be a winner," MacEwan University political scientist Chaldeans Mensah said Tuesday. "It's going to be a tougher task for the new entrants... and perhaps those entrants are what the party needs." The fee for leadership candidates has essentially doubled since the 2011 race, when it was set at $40,000 - of which $15,000 was refundable. During the 2006 race, the fee was set at $15,000. "It would seem to me that this is designed to weed out fringe candidates that are simply not going to be able to garner the support of a broad range of party donors and members across the province," Mensah said. Finance minister stands by new budget format, as criticism swirls Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, political science was interviewed about the new budget reporting process by the provincial government. Here's a part of the story: 11. MacEwan University political scientist Chaldeans Mensah said that even if Denis wasn't taking a shot at Horner, the budget could be an issue for some potential voters in the upcoming leadership campaign. "The changed formatting for budgeting has caused the Tories a great deal of grief with the right," Mensah said. "It could be grounds for somebody wanting to re-engage disgruntled Tories that have moved to the Wildrose, to run on a platform of saying, 'We're going to go back to the old Ralph Klein approach to budgeting." 8 Squeezing out squash players The big grey bureaucratic steamroller at MacEwan University has started rolling and now the squash community is being squashed. When it was Grant MacEwan College, it provided top-flight squash facilities to the community for 20 years. Now that it's a university, the four squash courts in the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness are being retrofitted and 300 members are being evicted. They argue space is needed for elite university athletes and for "trending fitness activities" such as spin, yoga, Pilates and Zumba. Interestingly enough, other proposed uses include "personal training sessions with trainers, and corporate clients," even though the basic reason given for the change is that the university is growing and fitness facilities must be provided for the increased student population. In fact, a part of the squash community at MacEwan is drawn from the student population. If immediate, cheap space is needed, a temporary structure built to MacEwan specifications could be leased for less than the dues paid by the squash members. Why demolish the courts, which are a very expensive asset? Harold Anderson, Edmonton Diversity in sport On Jan. 14, MacEwan University announced it would permanently close the four squash courts in the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness and convert the courts into fitness and studio facilities. MacEwan's are the only courts in a public institution downtown that meet the standards for play. They have been maintained in excellent condition and are accessible at the reasonable cost of a membership with the family centre. Their loss will render irreversible damage to Edmonton's squash community. MacEwan has a stable core of squash members who will have no viable alternatives to turn to in April 2014 if this decision is not reversed. I understand MacEwan's primary focus is toward its students, but I wonder about its role in supporting fitness in the community-at-large, and diversity in sports in Edmonton. Jacqueline Greenblatt, Edmonton
