ISLAND CITY TEDDY BEAR RIDE What can I say? It was raining when we got up to get ready for the Island City teddy bear ride. That morning, before we could get out the door, several people called to cancel and finally the call came from Norris that Marilyn had gone to the ER the night before and they were not going to be able to lead the ride. We thought we will just go to Middleton to the meet up point and see what happens. Off we went, in the rain. At the restaurant there was not a soul from the club but suddenly Phil and Cathy showed up. But, they were not in riding gear. Then Dan & Bonnie pulled up with their bike and camper. They were going to Island City, rain or shine, because there was a birthday party in that area for their grandchild. So that was it. After breakfast our two bikes took off in the rain. 2 Dan led us to Vale, then to Austin Junction, to Baker, North Bend and finally Island City. We went through heavy rain, mist, drizzle, sunny clear skies, and wind. We had two huge Bucks cross the road in front of us somewhere along the line. We slowed down to a crawl and they stopped on the other side of the road, and stood there staring at us, which is very dangerous cause you just don t know what they are going to do. Just about the time we were crawling past them they decided they wanted to be back on the other side of the road where they came from, so back they go, within feet of Dan & Bonnie s bike. They were huge and beautiful but it always a little scary in those situations. Arriving in Island City we found our way to Dick and Sharon Hohstadts farm. Dick had put out an invitation to anyone from our club to camp on his property. Dick & Sharon were there to greet us and we immediately got our two tents set up inside their huge new 13 foot high garage with three 11 foot doors that gave us a view of part of their 160 acres, with the mountains behind. What a gorgeous site. The bikes went in yet another garage area, out of the rain. A little later Mary Nordby arrived from Seattle. She had her little trailer chock full of teddy bears, well over 100, and she set herself up in Dick,s trophy room which is attached to the garage and filled with his trophies from his hunting trips to Africa. What a camp site. We were dry, warm and didn t have to worry about bears. We only had to hope that a Gazelle didn t fall off the wall and bean Mary on the head. Ladella Wood showed up with fresh baked cinnamon rolls for all of us, but we had to wait until we got back from the Mexican restaurant, where we all ate dinner, to enjoy them. The next day dawned dry and sunny and hot. We attended the Fireman s Breakfast where Sharon Hohstadt helped serve, took a turn through the sidewalk booths and then set up for the parade. It started right on schedule with only about 20 bikes, which was great! Buck & Suzette Schaffer led us through the parade route which was blissfully short, just down the main street and then off into the residential areas. We took it slow and all the folks, especially the kids, really enjoyed the bikes and the teddy bears. It only took us about 10 minutes and we were done with our part of the parade. Bonnie and Dan left to get to their birthday party. Immediately after the bikes were done with the parade, Dennis & Ladella Wood led Dick & I, and about 5 bikes from their club, on a gorgeous ride through the Oregon countryside to Ukiah for lunch. Gosh, that lush, green country is so beautiful. I don t think there is a more beautiful state in the West. Of course, that s because of the all the RAIN. We saw baby elk, several deer and wormed our way through lots of cows on the road in free range country. Ladella had set up a poker run and ultimately my Skinny Dick and Joe Hohstadt, Dick Hohstadt s brother, tied for low score. The next morning our ride back was dry and uneventful. What a fun weekend and what wonderful, nice people. They grow them good in Oregon. We sure hope to see all of these nice folks again soon. Miss Bonnie

Please spread the word about this Rally and get folks out to it. I know time is critical this time of year but this is one to attend. Registration, M/C Trailer and Tent camping will be done by the club upon your arrival. Motel and big RV stuff should be done with the RV Resort. 3

RIDE TO EMU-Z-UM 4 Our June breakfast meeting was headed up by Dick in place of Richard & Diana who were on vacation. Dick did a splendid job of turning our meeting into an X-rated gathering, innocently of course. Dick was so excited to announce our new club web-site. I was able to get it up he proudly announced. That was it. He couldn t get another word out. The perfect, Gotcha back, Dick. The new Idaho UMCI web-site is: idahoumci.weebly.com After breakfast Dick led about 8 bikes on a ride on the back roads to Stage Stop, then up Simco RD to Grandview where we arrived at the Emu-Z-Um. What a wonderful surprise. No one expected what we found. Jack & Belva Lawson have turned their property, located on Highway 78, West of Grandview, into an authentic replica of an early 1860 s town, with wooden sidewalks and authentic store fronts, filled with artifacts. But that s not all. They have a 1950 s soda shop, early 1900 s garage & gas station, early 1900 s toy room, Christmas room, Native American display, reproduction silver mine, train station and on & on. They had to build a second home on the property to live in because their first home is full of antiques and artifacts and is open to the public. The Silver City museum, which was originally located in the Silver City School, is now on display at the Emu- Z-Um. A big thank you should go to this couple for saving the Silver City Museum. Originally, the Lawson s had over 100 Emu s, which inspired the name of the place. Now, there are three Emu. We were taken on our tour by Belva and a little later Jack arrived. He had been to an auction to see if there was anything he just had to have for the museum! Such nice people. The Emu-Z-Um is open Saturday & Sunday 9:00 5:00 and during the week by appointment. Admission is $5.00, $2.;50 for children After spending a couple of hours walking around the museum in 80 degree heat, wearing riding pants and riding boots, we were ready for some beverage and lunch so Dan & Bonnie led us to Murphy. At the little Murphy café the waiter asked Evelyn for her order and she said I m with my husband. To which the waiter responded, So? I m not trying to date you! There were a lot of hamburgers ordered and, boy, they were delicious. After lunch and a short ride, we were back home. Another nice ride and great day with great, fun folks! Keep laughing. Miss Bonnie

I think we all need a rope like this found in Tygh Valley last weekend. You must be certified to use it though!! 5 Miss Bonnie must be getting awful tired on some of our rides. Take more vitamins for the long hauls.

The Dalles Teddy Bear Ride, 2010 So, it was up at 0-Dark-30, Friday morning. Yawn! And it wasn t very warm out, either. Oh well, it was going to be a great motorcycle trip and this was just part of the adventure. The group met at the Sunrise in Middleton, scheduled to depart at 8AM. It wasn t a huge group, but a nice one nevertheless. We had 7 Gold Wings and 4 Harleys, in the group. After the obligatory fuel/potty stop in Vail, it was off across the desert, stopping at Unity for comfort, again and gas. The Harleys only held 5 gallons, and the Sportster even less. Then on our way. At Austin Junction the HD group split off with Garry Fowble leading his merry band on a different route, and the rest of us continued on with a fuel and lunch stop in Mt. Vernon. As usual, we kept the whole restaurant entertained during lunch. After lunch our route took us past Dayville and onto Hwy 19 where we took a break at Spray, and a fuel stop in Fossil where we met up again with Garry s group that was having lunch there. Naturally, there was no ride to The Dalles without an ice cream stop in Shanniko before continuing on to The Dalles. A nice beauty stop was made at White Water Falls, too. Dick Burnam and Miss Bonnie broke with the group at Dufur and spent the night there. They reported that the outhouses at the City Park have been upgraded and they are working on upgrading the bathroom and shower facilities but haven t gotten very far, yet. In The Dalles,, the HD bunch invaded the Super 8 motel, while Evelyn and Alan Barker settled in at The Dalles Inn. Peggy and Greg continued on to Memaloose State Park, about 10 miles west of The Dalles to set up camp with Denis and Corlis Trom, Lonnie and Mary Holloway and Phil and Cathy Hall. It s a nice campground with background entertainment provided by the freeway traffic above and the railroad below. After awhile we just ignored it and went to sleep. Saturday found us back in The Dalles, after coffee, for the Cherry Festival and parade. Interesting weather. Rainy one minute, then sunny the next, but always breezy. Lonnie and Greg decided to walk over to Fred Meyer s. Lonnie needed cleaning rags and Greg needed a pair of socks. By the time they got back, the motorcycle part of the parade was over. Sigh. I know there must be a name for There will always be more. The rest of the parade was good, this type activity but it escapes though. Saturday s ride schedule called for riding Old Hwy 30 from Troutdale back to The Dalles. Unfortunately our plans me at the moment.. were thwarted by the weather. Guess there will be other days to do that. The day ended with a bang and a lot of hilarity, with dinner at Cousin s. This is a great place to eat, with a country flair, and various barnyard animal sounds when you walk in the door. Lonnie got a sheep s baa, and what followed kept us in stitches. When the greeter asked whose name to call, someone who shall remain nameless called out Snookems, Jr. Hmmm. That seemed to stick and we entertained all those around us during dinner. After dinner, however, Lonnie decided to sit on a plastic sheep outside the restaurant, and we ve got photographic proof, too! You only need to let your imagination run wild to envision the comments that followed. Good thing Lonnie has a great sense of humor. Mary Had a Little Lamb. Ring any bells? Sunday s goal was the Wild Horse Casino RV park at Pendleton, so after gassing up, it was across the Columbia River and eastbound on Washington Hwy 14. That was a lovely ride, with beautiful roads and great scenery. At I-82 it was a short freeway jump to cross back over the river into Oregon again, but immediately onto a great cross country 6

road to Pendleton. We had one interesting intersection where Alan stated he learned something as his bike slid nicely on all those tar snakes there. Most likely we all did a bit of that. Camp was set up at the RV park and dinner at the Casino. The food was only fair, but we all had a good time watching Mary Holloway win $72.00 at the slots. Monday found us plying our way up Hwy 11 a few miles before turning off to have breakfast at the Longbranch saloon and restaurant in Weston. Weston is an interesting little town of 700 souls, founded in 1874, as a farm and ranching community, and most of the residents there are descendents of the original settlers. After a delicious breakfast consisting of too much food on our plates to eat all of it, we headed off, taking Tollgate Road into Elgin, then going west a few miles where we made a wrong turn that took us into some great wind and a lovely gravel dual sport section of road. But, it s hard to get lost there and we found ourselves in Union for coffee before shoving off for Baker where the gals headed into a candy and gift store while the guys lounged around across the street on the sidewalk. Our spirits were lifted, though when the ladies emerged from the store carrying boxes of various flavors of fudge, so the wait was worth it. The rest of the trip was unremarkable, heading down Old 30 as far as the cement plant, then it was the slab the rest of the way. All in all, we had a great time despite Mother Nature not cooperating very well. No matter what, these adventures always seem to turn out well, and this was no exception. 7
