2 Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society Volume 57/ 08 August 2017 NEWSLETTER President Message Presidents Message This time of year is full of excitement and busy work for the upcoming annual show. JGMS is having our 29 th annual show and sale at the Morocco Temple September With this comes lots of planning and work. If you have never attended a Show Meeting, you are missing out and it is high time you have stepped in to try something new. Our annual show accomplishes and provides many things: Creates operating revenue for JGMS to further our mission, Fulfills Charter and 501(c)3 responsibilities, Educates Public, provides opportunities for learning and sharing, enables the public to become familiar with JGMS and what we have to offer. For the volunteers of JGMS it offers yet another opportunity for socializing and fun, but a since of pride to be involved with such a great show and the ability to give back to an organization that we all love and cherish. Make it a point to step up and get involved with the annual show. It is well worth the effort and the rewards are priceless. As always, it is my pleasure being able to share JGMS with you. JGMS General Meeting Minutes August 3, 2017 Dixie Murphy moved that the minuets from July meeting be approved as published. Second by Russ Fissett. Motion carried. Quarterly dinner: No date has been set. The dinner will possibly be a low country boil. Details of the event will be ed. Please respond to the so that a correct count can be made. Show vendors: s indicate that all booths will be filled. Treasurer s report is posted on the board. Social Concerns: Patrick Griffin is in the hospital. Jason Hamilton s mother is in the hospital. Gary Davis daughter died. Please keep Pat, Jason and Gary in your thoughts. Show: The curio cabinet that is the grand prize at the show was brought in. Items are still needed to fill the cabinet. o Members were encouraged to distribute flyers for the show. o Karen Boger reported on billboard and newspaper ads. o Alex has volunteered to help with radio and local calendars. o Volunteers are still needed for all parts of the show. Tim Smeggil reported on the web site. Randy Ritter, Workshop: Casting equipment will be up and running soon. Silver tools will be assigned in each class. We received a donation of a cabbing machine, a faceting machine and some carts. Russ Fisett: Work is still being done upstairs. Karen Boger reminded everyone to sign in when volunteering. Pat Burkholder reported on refreshments and passed around the sign-up sheet for September. Education: Anne Acker encouraged instructors to be prepared to teach classes next month. COPS: The Gainesville club invited Craig Hamilton to speak at their club. The program was well received. Garage Sale: Over $ dollars made in spite of small number of goods to sell. Anne Lanier thanked all the volunteers who helped. Debby Ritter reported on Junior Day. Good turn out and the kids enjoyed the day. Debby thanked all the volunteers who helped with Junior Day. Jennifer Lake will be taking over the youth program. She is a new member and is eager to help. Debby suggested having pre-teen and teen classes.

5 Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society Volume 57/ 06 June 2017 How to promote the show? Each person can assist in promoting the Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society Annual Show; it is simple. The easiest way (especially if you do not have computer access or a Facebook account) is to pick up some fliers and take them with you as you go about doing your daily errands. All it takes is to ask the friendly manager at CVS or Walgreens if you can put up a show flier in the window. If you have the fliers and your own scotch tape, they usually are cool about the whole thing. Save yourself the time, (Michael s, Hobby Lobby & Jo-Ann Fabrics) are not places to put fliers, but walk next door to the stores surrounding those stores and many will be willing to allow you to put up the fliers. You just need to remember, where you put them up so that you can take them down after the show. For those members that have Facebook Accounts: The easiest way to promote the show is to locate the show Event on our Facebook page ( C%22page_id_source%22%3A %2C%22action_history%22%3A[%7B%22surfa ce%22%3a%22page%22%2c%22mechanism%22%3a%22main_list%22%2c%22extra_data%22 %3A%22%7B%5C%22page_id%5C%22%3A %2C%5C%22tour_id%5C%22%3A null%7d%22%7d]%2c%22has_source%22%3atrue%7d ) and then click share it to your page. Here comes the easy part, ask all your friends on Facebook to do the same thing. This will cause a cascading effect that will hit a lot more people than just mentioning it in a post every now and then. So if you share it with 5 of your friends, and then each of those 5 then share it with 5 of their friends, and it keeps getting shared (On the first round, it hits 25 people minimum). The good news is that I am sure that you many of you have more than 5 friends. September is right around the corner, now is the time to share share share. The news will be fresh in their minds and they will be already to appear when the show gets here. Showcases Every year we have showcases set up, on the stage, at the Morocco Shrine Annual Show. This year is no different. We are still looking for members to fill out forms to enter competition cases. There was mention of a scholarship award to the best case, however if nobody has filled out the proper paperwork to enter a showcase for the event then that scholarship will just lay in waste. In September, there will be a free class showing people how to set up a showcase. Showcases are not reserved for anybody special; any member in good standings with the club can display a showcase. Here are the link to the Uniform Rules for filling out a case properly. The form to fill out will the next page in this newsletter. The form is simple to fill out, if there are questions about Division or Exhibit Class (for competition purposes), I there are members at the club able to assist you in properly filling out those areas of the form. We cannot have a Showcase Scholarship if there are no Competition Showcases at the show.

8 Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society Volume 57/ 06 June 2017 Field Trips An Official Field Trip of the Cobb County Gem and Mineral Society, Inc. (Marietta, GA) (HOST) An Official Field Trip of the (enter your associated club's name here!) Saturday, October 28, 2017 Polk County, GA 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM Eastern TRIP: This is a favorite collecting trip of CCGMS. New areas are bulldozed each time and jasper is plentiful and easy to find. COLLECTING: We will collect beautiful jasper pieces that make excellent cabochons. The pieces are multi-colored in reds, yellows, whites, and blacks with both banding and mottled arrangements. BRING: Rock hammer, small pick or shovel for light digging, a garden rake, work gloves and a bucket to put finds in. Please fill any holes you make as this is a working cattle ranch and we are grateful to the owner for letting us collect on his land. New areas have been bulldozed so that the jasper is quite easy to find. You might want to bring a spray bottle of water to clean finds. Bring your lunch and water to drink. The hosting club will have bottled water and snacks available. CHILDREN: Yes, this is a great trip for children of all ages with parental supervision. PETS: No. This is a working cattle ranch, no dogs are allowed. FACILITIES: There are no facilities at the site.

9 Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society Volume 57/ 06 June 2017 DIRECTIONS AND WHERE TO MEET: We will meet at 10:00am Eastern time at the Ingles Market parking lot (1100 Nathan Dean Bypass, Rockmart, GA 30153) next to McDonald s on US Highway 278 (GA-6 Bypass) on the north side of Rockmart, GA. This location is set back about 50 feet along the south-side of the divided highway called the Nathan Dean Bypass. DIRECTIONS for Out-of-State Travelers: If you drive into Georgia going south on I-75, then you should take GA-113 West at Cartersville (exit #28). Follow Main Street/West Street through Cartersville and 20 more miles on GA-113 to Rockmart, GA. At the stoplight turn right (East) on US 278 (Nathan Dean Parkway) and go ¼ mile to view the Ingles Parking lot on your left (south side of road) next to McDonalds. If you are coming into Georgia going East on I-20 take exit 11 north on US-27 (Bremen By-Pass) for 25 miles to the Cedartown By-Pass (US 278), where you will exit by-pass following US-278 East for 12 miles to Rockmart, GA. The Ingles Parking lot is on your right, just past McDonalds as you enter Rockmart. DIRECTIONS for In-State Travelers: Go just beyond the greater Atlanta area going west on I-20 to exit #44, Thornton Road (GA-6 North). Turn right and follow GA-6 which turns into US-278 for 33 miles to Rockmart.
