1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Welcome Record Volume 32 Issue 12 Wednesday 5 April 2017 Donation: 50c Dunolly Campus Celebrates At the launch on Wednesday 29th March, Member for Ripon Ms Louise Staley MP, officially launched four key projects which have recently been completed at the Dunolly Campus. The Dunolly Campus has had recent works completed which included: the refurbishment of the resident dining room; installation of solar panels; #SayNO2familviolence sign; history boards, and a wall wrap dedicated to Rheola Charity Carnival. Director of Nursing, Donna Bell, said, This has been an exciting project in conjunction with Rheola Charity Carnival. The key components of the works involved forming a working group and having input and consultation with residents and families. Walls were removed and the space utilised to incorporate a larger kitchenette which allows residents to serve themselves from a bain-marie. The dining room was old and looking very tired, it was time for the space to be renovated. It has been fantastic to see residents utilising the refurbished area. The Dunolly residents are delighted with the new and improved space. Ms Bell said. CEO Terry Welch said the organisation is very grateful for the ongoing financial support which the Rheola Charity Carnival provides each year. As an organisation we have an ongoing commitment to engage with community groups. It is fantastic to have such a terrific relationship with an event that has a long standing history within our community. Mr. Welch added, This project again highlights a number of strengths of MDHS. It highlights how we partner for outcomes, it highlights the strength of community engagement with us and it highlights our resolute focus on quality of care. To have over 200 people, including the school, attend has been a terrific community event. Phone ROSIE S RAMBLE Really feel for those unfortunate people (and their animals) who lived through cyclone Debbie and now have to rebuild their lives - again. I heard on the radio the other day that Prince Philip drives himself (at 94 or 5) incognito in a London taxi, and has done so for years! Good to know he has an escape route. Thought we were being broken into by some very noisy intruders that windy night last week. After investigating all possible sources of the loud banging around the place (without going outside), I finally remembered that the front screen door has a strange habit of undoing itself in the wind sure enough it was swinging open, hitting the chair on the verandah and banging back again. End of break-in. I reckon we can look for some of the Kindergarten children to pop up on Junior Master Chef, judging by the story in WR last week. I have finally got really fed up with the endless stream of spiders building their homes in mine, so I decided to bomb them. We were going to be out for a couple of hours the recommended time to be out of the house after the bombs go off so it was D Day! I used three canisters throughout the house in the assault. The warning on the cans tells you not to point the nozzle towards yourself when you unlock them. Logical but after they are activated, you have to place them on the floor and it would not be hard to bend over and get a face full of spray. Something you are not told is that the vapour sets off the smoke alarm, so you have to be careful where you place the open can. Lots of loud noise results if you are under the alarm. When we came home I expected to be ankle deep in dead insects not so. I did notice a few very still spiders hanging from webs. Haven t seen any live insects since (only millipedes) but lifeless bodies keep appearing on the floor. Success!! Rosie Bad report excuse The magician at my birthday party hypnotised me. 3 5 April 2017 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 12 Page ANZAC APPEAL 285 VICTORIAN RSL SUB-BRANCHES RAISING VITAL FUNDS FOR OUR HEROES Appeals officers at all 285 Victorian RSL Sub-Branches are ready for the 2017 ANZAC Appeal, from 1st April, with volunteers all geared up to sell thousands of badges across the state. Richard Gale, President, Dunolly-Bealiba RSL Sub branch, is confident the local community will once again dig deep and generously support the RSL s annual ANZAC Appeal. Our RSL volunteers, from all walks of life, are ready to offer a variety of ANZAC Appeal badges, including a special badge to commemorate the last great charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba in The ANZAC Appeal continues to grow in momentum with Victorians always eager to purchase a badge. All our dedicated volunteers, often veterans, are determined to get into the community and not only sell ANZAC Appeal badges, but to share their stories and experiences. It is a wonderful time for our community to come together and pay respects to our past and present servicemen and women. According to RSL Victoria s Appeals Manager, Peter Smith, The funds raised through the RSL s ANZAC Appeal enable us to deliver much needed assistance to those men and women who have served our country and who now need our support. Funds from the ANZAC Appeal go to a variety of services and programs for veterans who need help and is tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. It can include assistance such as medical bills, emergency home repairs, food vouchers and relief from social isolation. Providing premium welfare services is a top priority for RSL Victoria, and the ANZAC Appeal makes this happen. Mr Smith said. Each RSL Sub-Branch in Victoria plays a vital role within their community and for many veterans, the Sub- Branch is the social and welfare hub that they know and love. I encourage members of the community to engage with their local RSL, attend a commemorative ANZAC service and to show that they care by buying and wearing an ANZAC Appeal badge with pride this April. You can purchase an ANZAC Appeal badge from your local RSL Sub-Branch or from volunteer collectors in your local community. ANZAC Appeal badges are also available at Woolworths, and Officeworks from early April. You can also donate online at ww.anzacappeal.com.au Rick Gale Local community commemorative projects receive a boost Minister for Veterans Affairs Dan Tehan today announced that 55 community projects honouring Australia s wartime history would receive more than $145,000 in funding. Mr Tehan said the projects, funded under the Australian Government s Saluting Their Service grants program, would honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our nation. These grants help communities across the nation build and preserve memorials and undertake activities that teach younger generations about Australia s wartime history, Mr Tehan said. These projects are unique to the communities where they originate but they all embody the spirt of the Anzac legend and the values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. Up to $4,000 is available for an individual project under the Community Commemorative Grants category of the program. This is a rolling grants program, so applications are accepted at any time. I encourage interested groups and organisations to review the grant guidelines and to submit a request for funding to the Department of Veterans Affairs along with the requested supporting documentation, Mr Tehan said. A list of grant recipients in each state is attached. All figures are GST free. 6 Page 6 Volume 32 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 5 April 2017 Central Goldfields region leading the fight against family violence Ripon MP Louise Staley has praised Maryborough Health Services for helping to spread an anti-domestic violence message in Dunolly, whilst pressure mounts on the Andrews Government to follow the communities lead and beef up local police resources. Maryborough Health Services today unveiled a #SayNO2familviolence sign outside of the Dunolly Health Centre which matches the sign placed out the front of Maryborough Hospital. The campaign established by Maryborough Rotary has increased its reach, appearing all over the shire, on the internet and even on TV. Ms Staley said it was great to see to the entire Central Goldfields community rally behind this cause. Domestic violence devastates many families. It is great to see our community working together to empower people to stop this scourge Ms Staley said. We now need the State Government to follow through and employ more police officers, more family violence units and bring back harsher sentences so we can stamp out family violence and make our communities safe. The Central Goldfields community has been leading the way in the campaign against domestic violence; Daniel Andrews now needs to back us up by better resourcing police and initiate tougher sentencing. Louise Staley MP Percussion Workshop With the help of Community Music Victoria, our Dunolly Street Band is organising a Percussion Workshop this Sunday 9th April,10.00am at the Ministry of Fun, 120 Broadway, here in Dunolly. 7 5 April 2017 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 12 Page 7 Labor kicks off more grants to revamp sports facilities in Western Victoria The Andrews Government is giving clubs, sporting organisations and councils in Western Victoria another opportunity to secure funding to build modern and safer grassroots sports facilities and new multi-sport indoor stadiums. Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said that applications are now open for the next round of the $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and the $22 million Better Indoor Stadiums Fund. Ms Pulford said local sports clubs are the lifeblood of the community in Western Victoria and deserve modern, safe, inclusive and fully-accessible facilities with room to grow and welcome more members. Our Government is making sure that even more sporting organisations, working with their local councils, can benefit from these grants, Ms Pulford said. We re helping clubs transform tired sports grounds and ageing clubrooms to encourage more people to get involved and stay fit and healthy, The funding also includes $10 million for Female Friendly Facilities to build or upgrade women s change rooms meaning female players will never again have to use make-shift areas to prepare for competition and training. And for the first time, councils can apply for up to three $100,000 grants from the Female Friendly Facilities category to ensure that more venues provide equal facilities for males and females. Women s sport is booming thanks to new competitions like the AFLW and Super Netball and we re seeing more and more females signing up to local clubs here in Western Victoria. That s why the Andrews Government is upgrading tired old facilities and making sure our sports infrastructure is safer and more inclusive for all, Ms Pulford said. I urge councils and sporting organisations in Western Victoria to apply now and kick-start new projects that can make a real difference to people s lives, she said. For more information or to apply online visit: Jaala Pulford MP Nominations open for Victorian Senior of the Year Awards Labor Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, is today encouraging Victorians to recognise the contributions made to our community by senior Victorians. Nominations are now open for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards, celebrating older Victorians who support and inspire others through their volunteer work. The awards highlight the role of seniors as mentors, educators, role models, leaders, or behind the scenes workers. These awards celebrate dedicated seniors from our community here in Western Victoria who give so much back to other people and their communities, Ms Pulford said. If you know an inspiring older person or organisation in Western Victoria that gives time to helping others in the community, give them the recognition they deserve with a nomination for the Senior of the Year Awards, she said. Categories include the Premier s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year, the Promotion of Multiculturalism Award, the Healthy and Active Living Award, the Veteran Community Award and the Council on the Ageing Victoria Senior Achiever Awards. The Age-Friendly Victoria Award recognises an organisation or a business that creates age-friendly communities, promotes active ageing, or improves quality of life for older Victorians. Nominations for the awards close on Friday the 23 rd of June. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Government House in October as part of the 35 th Victorian Seniors Festival. More information, profiles of previous award recipients and nomination form can be found at : Jaala Pulford MP

8 Page 8 Volume 32 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 5 April 2017 Safety first for fine fuel burns Good rainfall and perfect growing conditions resulted in a bumper season for Loddon Shire farmers. After reaping the rewards of harvest, many are now planning a fine fuel burn to tackle crop stubble and to control weed and undergrowth. Excessive growth in some localities has resulted in a high number of permit to burn applications being received and Council s local laws team have begun inspecting properties. Community safety is paramount and the authorities will issue hefty fines to those who fail to comply with permit conditions. The simplest way to apply for a permit is to visit and click on our documents before scrolling down to forms and permit applications and clicking on local laws where you will find a request for permit to burn form. Once your application is received, local laws will arrange a property inspection to consider your application. Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ s passion, music portrays his suffering, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ s suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming sound that reminds us of the earthquake upon the death of the Saviour on the Cross and through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of the ultimate victory. Year 5/6 Students Hospital Dining Room Opening The 5/6 class were part of the re-opening ceremony for the Dunolly Hospital s dining room, as well as celebrating using solar panels and Maryborough Rotary #sayno2familyviolence sign. Our School Captains Grace and Blake opened the ceremony along with our Vice-captains Annie and Jaxson. The class performed two songs - Excuses and Riptide; then sang two verses of the National Anthem. The audience was very impressed that our students knew both verses of the anthem. The hospital demonstrated their community spirit and each speaker referred back to our students and the great sense of community our attendance created. To say I was proud is once again an understatement, but even more so, I was confident, confident in our students ability to sit and listen respectfully, contribute positively to their community and represent the school in an outstanding manner. My confidence says a lot for the calibre of our students and I congratulate them all.

Dunolly Bowling Club hosted the Goldfields Bowls Division A1 and 2 nd Div. Grand Finals on Saturday 1 st April. A good crowd watched on in almost ideal conditions as the two rival clubs did battle. The fate of Dunolly Blue was decided on the last end, while Dunolly had two rinks up they were unable to secure victory, going down to Highland Tartan by only one shot. Similarly, in Division 2, Dunolly Green had a lead over Highland White on 2 rinks, but M Reeves from Highland White was too strong, giving them the Division 2 Pennant by a mere 8 shots. Congratulations to Highland on both wins and, also to Newstead Blue for their A2 win over Avoca Red. Sunday 2nd April was Medley Day, with 18 teams competing. The team led by Nipper Dowling from Inglewood took first place with 117 points followed by Harold Patullo from Maryborough Golf. A Larpent Season 2017 opening! Welcome to the new season. All past, present and new members are encouraged to come along for the 2017 season. The course is open for practice from Saturday 1st April, with the official opening of competition on Saturday 22nd April. Most important All members are asked to come to a working bee to get the course and clubhouse up to scratch on Sunday 9th April from 9am to midday. Looking forward to seeing you all at DGC for Details of new memberships will be available from the Dunolly Post Office. Thank you, Ian Dunolly Social Cyclists Sunday 2nd April saw five cyclists line up on Broadway for our first 2017 ride. About time you say, however, given the hot humid Summer we ve just had, it s understandable. Murray was elected leader for the ride. He lead us through the bush around the Old Lead and back via Bob s track, ending up with coffee and lunch at Eddington. Many thanks to Faye for motivating us to get riding again, and Murray for his leadership. All being well, the next ride will be on Sunday 23rd April, after a busy Easter weekend. Neville Roberts The season commences with the first game at home on 22nd April. Seniors and reserves football players are training hard as are the senior netball players. The Club is looking forward to being competitive. The Club has struggled in attracting junior football players but now has an U11.5 team. To ensure that U14.5 and U17 players have the opportunity to play as Dunolly, the Club has partnered with Natte Bealiba for the season. The Club has an active Auskick program this year as part of the plan to build a base for the future. No such problems with netball though. All teams are full to overflowing. The Club is looking to fill the volunteer rosters for the canteen and officials for match day. The canteen roster is for two hours only and the Club plans to have four volunteers working each shift. We ask all members and supporters to consider assisting. If interested in volunteering for the canteen please contact Nat Conlan on If volunteering for match day please contact Marion on The Club appreciates the support provided by the community. Bev was well -known in Dunolly by a number of groups, particularly focusing on her love of music. She was an integral part of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Bev had a wonderfully witty part in The Gondoliers as the Duchess (photo left) and played a suitably nasty Katisha in The Mikado, and Ruth in Pirates of Penzance. She sang with the D Sharps for all too short a time before becoming ill. Bev was always willing to give her time and energy to help fellow cast members with their parts. Bev will now be singing with the angels. The funeral was held on Monday 3 rd April in Burwood. Susan Anderson on behalf of Dunolly Gilbert & Sullivan Society and the D Sharps HARTWIG, Beverley (Bev) It was with much sadness that we heard of the passing of Bev on 27 th March 2017 after a 14 month battle with cancer. Bev was a dedicated teacher at Timor PS with a great passion for, and dedication to, music. We have missed her at Saturday morning coffee for the past year and are thankful for her friendship over the past decade. Rest in Peace Bev. You are missed by many. The Saturday morning coffee crew Sad times for Dunolly It was a sad time for Dunolly with the passing of locals Richard Wright and Beverley Hartwig in the same week. The graveside funeral at the Dunolly cemetery for Richard Wright was attended by well over 100 cars. The funeral procession was so large that Broadway was cordoned off by police and traffic diverted. The service was very emotional, with the bagpipes played by Bradley Saul. The Court House held about 160 mourners after the funeral with a slide show and beautiful words from Fiona and the family. Bev s service was in Melbourne and well-attended by many of her extensive connections in the music and teaching world. Bev played many leading roles with the Dunolly Gilbert and Sullivan Society and will be missed by all the singers in our group. I also learned this week that another of our performers had passed away last October. Valery Lefel from Castlemaine was a dedicated singer making her stage debut in her 80s. VALE Latin for Farewell to our friends, and commiserations to the families. Rachel Buckley

20 Page 20 Volume 32 Issue 12 THE WELCOME RECORD 5 April 2017 VICKY S VIEW Eddington Hotel Jean and Keith Richardson bought the old Eddington Commercial Hotel in the 1960s. It had been uninhabited for a time and was more than one hundred years old, so there was a lot of restoration to be done. After more than a year of spending all their spare time working on it, they were able to move in, but the work continued. The kitchen chimney had to be rebuilt, lots of roofing had to be replaced and new guttering put on while a lot of flooring had to be redone. A seventeen foot (5 metre) deep underground tank had been filled with rubbish. It took two years to get all the rubbish out, taking a few bucket loads up every evening. To the couple's disappointment they never found any treasures or trinkets in all that rubbish. However, Keith re-rendered it and they bought a pump and it provided all their water needs for the house once it filled. The bedrooms were lined with hessian so they needed plastering, and the toilet had to be brought inside. It was put into what had been an old pantry which had a wine cellar below it. All the window frames were original, except one that had to be replaced. Some even had beautiful hand-made glass panes, complete with trapped air bubbles still in place. Before it became a private residence in the 1920s, the pub had been a busy place. It was a change station for horses for Cobb and Co coaches. Slab stables out the back had grooms to care for the horses, and an accommodation block at the side of the pub offered beds for bone-weary travellers. The block was demolished many years ago. Outside the bar window was a deep ledge where the coachmen were served a drink. A shutter used to come up and cover the servery when the pub was closed. Inside was the bar, a separate ladies parlour, a billiards room and a detached kitchen, as well as the family bedrooms. For a week in February 1977 it was used for filming parts of the movie 'The Getting of Wisdom'. Jean and Keith had to find other accommodation while that was happening. It was also used as a set for the ABC TV series 'Henry Lawson'. Right next door to the rendered brick hotel is the old bluestone post office, also dating from the 1850s. Painted on the large front windows are the now-faint words 'post office, telegraph, money order, savings'. Apparently it was possible to buy almost anything there, from fencing wire to a small piece of lace. One of the back rooms had been used as a malting floor for a local brewer. The store traded until Further along McCoy Street, closer to the Loddon River is Goulden's Bridge Inn, also a fine looking building. It had a very decorative glass lamp out the front to help guide night travellers. Just past this inn was the reason six pubs existed in Eddington, a bridge over the Loddon River. It was on the main access road between the Castlemaine and Dunolly goldfields and was well-travelled. This bridge was damaged or swept away by turbulent floodwaters many times over the years. Eventually a new bridge was built a little further along the river. It was opened in 1929 and was the longest concrete bridge in Victoria at that time. At the bottom of McCoy Street a few ancient timbers were poking their weathered heads above the swiftly flowing Loddon on Sunday. They looked to be about where the old bridge had been. But maybe they were put there to moor boats, or prop up fishing rods. As we walked back up the hardpacked track, it did not need much imagination to hear whips cracking as thirsty Cobb and Co drivers urged their tired horses up the rise towards the comforts of the Eddington Commercial Hotel. Thanks to Jean Richardson for sharing her memories, and to the Loddon Shire Interpretive signs and the book Eddington Reflections compiled by Ron Carless. Vicky Frizzell If anyone has something of local interest they would like to share, they could contact me any evening on We are struggling to come up with many more interesting things to write about, so we would be pleased to hear from you.
