3 From the Editor Lee Acaster 2016 This month, I have chosen to use pictures of Shingle Street for the cover and on this page. These stormy and moody pictures were taken by Lee Acaster and the cover one was reproduced in the Sunday Times a couple of months ago. His fantastic work can be found on Inside we have a feature on Micky McBurnie, who will be well known to many of you, together with more letters than I have seen in my time as an editor. I hope you enjoy this issue. 4 Local Lives - Micky McBurnie When you walk into her home you almost fall over her HABSS gear. There it is, waiting for the call and off she would rush to be a first responder to someone who needed help. Of course it s not just a case of hanging around waiting. Micky has had to do the training, which is done at weekends and has to be Contributed Micky flying assessed before she is allowed to go out on call. And then there are the refresher courses which take place in Woodbridge still at weekends. And that s not all. Many of you will have eaten one of the excellent HABSS breakfasts in the village hall. All volunteers and there s Micky doing her bit for the cause. Born Margaret just after the war, she took exception to being Little Margaret and that s where the Micky came in. She went to Southampton Grammar School and then to Nottingham to study music clearly her life s love, besides her daughter that is! And the three youngsters to whom she has been an active grandmother for years. So she became a music teacher in Norwich and did ten years. While she was there, however, a friend got her into flying and she became a pilot and then an instructor. For a while she towed gliders but eventually ended up at the Ipswich School of Flying for 7 or 8 years at the old Ipswich Airport (now a housing estate). And then she obtained a commercial licence and worked for Air UK out of Norwich. Clearly she was quite a rarity a woman in a man s world! In 1995, she cut back and was just training again. On the afternoon I met her there was still the chance that she might drive off to Seething on the Norfolk border and have a flight. She obtained a job at Bawdsey Manor teaching music to all sorts of ages and nationalities. So what are her musical abilities? Well, having learnt the violin at school she moved on to the keyboard for most of her life and regularly plays Page 4 February

5 the organ around the county. In the 90s she took up the saxophone and then in around 2000 she became a cello player. She conducts the Hollesley WI choir. She leads the Sutton Heath Choir each Thursday. She does special concerts with the Deben 8 choir. And then there s the Suffolk Strings. And the Melody Makers - a group of four singers and Micky on keyboard which visits old peoples homes and also does Ipswich Holiday Help for Children. I m getting tired just listening to what she does! But it doesn t end there apparently she plays cello in the Woodbridge Orchestra and for Trianon, who do quality proms, and she is part of the Red Barn Orchestra in Metfield and she is in another cello ensemble and a piano trio. There are other concerts she plays in and often organises and she, as mentioned, plays regularly at weddings and funerals, fetes and flower- shows when requested. And the sax as background music for the open gardens. And then, of course, she is a bell ringer and that, again, means taking time to practice on Friday night and then turn up before the service Cello-playing in concert on Sunday. And they are all off in October for a bell ringers outing which will involve three towers in the morning and two in the afternoon presumably with a pub in between! Contributed Micky is part of a team, The Open Book Scheme, who visit schools to do assemblies on stories in the Bible. They visit five local schools usually once each half term. On On waitress duty in the HABSS cafe the same theme she is a churchwarden in Shottisham and helped to obtain the grant to go towards repairs to the church tower. It doesn t end there. She told me about a typical Friday in her life. She has been helping with Riding for the Disabled for 18 years, which she does on a Friday morning. Then it s off at lunchtime to help on the Heritage Garden at the Suffolk Punch Trust (she does that Tuesday and Friday). She hosts a stringed trio at about 3 in the afternoon and then has a regular two hours piano teaching. And then, of course, it s off to ring the church bells. By this time I was so tired taking it all in that I needed to get home and take a nap! Nick Mason Page 5 February 2016 Contributed

6 Our Vicar writes Dear Friends 2016 is now well under way and perhaps the New Year and with it our New Year resolutions is a distant memory. The opportunity to make a fresh start, though, to turn over a new leaf, is always with us. It might be in a very small way a minor change to our routine or clearing out a cupboard or something much bigger a new career or home. We tend to think of Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday, this year on 10 th February, as a time of giving things up but it is also a time to think about new beginnings. The origins of the Christian observance of Lent lie in the early church s preparation of new Christians for baptism at Easter. As those preparing for baptism underwent a time of penance (fasting, self-examination and reflection) and preparation (teaching and bible study) it became a time of penance and preparation for the whole congregation. Only one meal was taken a day, near the evening. There was to be no meat, fish, or animal products eaten. Easter is still a traditional time for baptism and a renewal of baptism vows is part of our Easter Sunday service. Do get in touch if you feel you might be interested in the new beginning of baptism (christening) for yourself or your children. Many Christian traditions are recovering the practice of fasting both during the Lenten period and as a process of deepening spiritual discernment. There is a strong history of fasting within all branches of Christianity as well as other faith traditions. Fasting doesn t necessarily mean going without food altogether but more usually cutting down, perhaps avoiding alcohol, rich foods, red meat. Fasting can be good for the body as well as the soul! It also helps us think about: Solidarity with those who cannot afford much food every day e.g. people who have to rely on food banks, mums on low incomes who don t eat at all so that they can give their children something to eat, children coming home to find nothing in the house to eat. Saying no to what we are allowed is a discipline which can help us to say no to the behaviours we should not allow ourselves. Come and join us for a frugal meal of bread and soup on Ash Wednesday or any Saturday in Lent. Details are on page 8. 8 Lent Lunches Our series of Lent lunches begins at Sutton Church on Ash Wednesday 10th February at 12 noon with Holy Communion followed by a light lunch of homemade soup and bread with donations going this year to the Churches Urban Fund. The series continues with a short service of midday prayer at 12 noon each Saturday: 13 th Feb at Shottisham Church, 20 th Feb at Alderton Church, 27 th Feb at Boyton Church. Ruth Hatchett Snowdrops in Bawdsey Churchyard Ruth Hatchett Hollesley Primary School Mrs Thomas and Mrs Busby We are very fortunate at Hollesley Primary School to have the support of several people from the village who give their time voluntarily to help us. Two of these fantastic people are Mrs Thomas and Mrs Busby who both come in to help listen to children read. They both started back in 2008, before we started at the school, and they have been coming every week since then. We wanted to know more about them so we interviewed them for this report. Mrs Thomas Mrs Thomas says that she enjoys hearing children read and watching how they progress during their time at school. Her favourite and most loved author is Michael Morpurgo because his stories are excellently written and relate to life. However, she does enjoy all childrens authors. Although she does like reading now she didn t when she was a child. Believe Mrs Thomas helps a student it or not Mrs Thomas didn t actually own a single book! Before she started hearing readers at Hollesley, Mrs Thomas worked as a secretary at a primary school where she also heard children read. Page 8 February 2016 Contributed

9 When she isn t helping us at Hollesley, Mrs Thomas enjoys sewing (which she has helped children at school with even before she came to help with reading), gardening, walking, darts and being a member of the WI. Mrs Busby The thing that Mrs Busby enjoys most about reading with the children at Hollesley is seeing how they progress and interpret how they read the book. Her favourite books to read are mostly on the topic of war and history, however she also likes reading lots of other types of books as well. She doesn t really have a favourite author though because she likes the way all of them write. Before she came and read with the children at Hollesley she worked at the National Health Service (NHS) in Basildon, Essex and was Mrs Busby discusses a book a payroll manager. They paid 9,000 nurses, doctors and staff that worked there. She worked there for an impressive 20 years. Despite working as a reading teacher when she was younger she had difficulty in reading and didn t like reading out loud. When she isn t in school, Mrs Busby likes gardening, computing, walking and playing darts. She has also been the president of the WI for 7 consecutive years. Although we wanted to tell you about Mrs Thomas and Mrs Busby because they have been coming in to our school for such a long time, there are other people who give their time to come and read with us as well each week and we are very grateful to all of them. We hope to tell you more about them in a future report. 11 Letters Dear Editor Through Village Voices, I would like to express my sincere thanks to local residents for their support and help during my career as the local village Bobby. I have worked in Hollesley and the surrounding area for the past 15 years. Working within a warm and friendly community has made my job much easier and more enjoyable. I have met many people and made many friends. However in January I hung up my handcuffs and retired after 25 years service. I hope you remain safe and I wish you and your families a peaceful New Year. Andy Warne Dear Editor, I refer to Mr Lambert's letter in the December Village Voices concerning the locked gate across the pathway in the Black Ditch Plantation next to Vale Farm ("Bluebell Wood"). I understand that this is not a registered Right of Way. However, it appears that for a very long time this pathway through the wood has been used as a right of way. If there are villagers who have recollection of how long they and their forebears have used this pathway as though it were a right of way it could be possible to apply to have the Right of Way established. This is somewhat complex and an alternative - preferable - solution would be to engage, as a village, with the landowner asking them to establish the route as a Permissive Pathway which does not create a legal Right of Way but is something most landowners are prepared to do in situations such as this; there are precedents with other landowners locally. If there are villagers who can indicate how long they and their past generations have used the pathway for (by ing me), we could then engage with the Parish Council and the landowner to try to create an amicable settlement. If there is long enough precedent established, and in the absence of an amicable settlement to a Permissive Pathway, it might be necessary to investigate if a legal Right of Way can be established. I am sure the Ramblers Association and SCDC would be helpful and very probably supportive. Patrick Jacob, Church Farm, Hollesley,on patrick.jacob@thechurchfarm.com Dear Editor I write, a little belatedly, to say a big cheer for the absolutely fantastic Christmas decorations done by Paul Finlay for the Shepherd and Dog...masterly. Also on the same subject, what a jolly sight for sore eyes the house decorated with Kandinsky and Mondrian is. All we need now is a Banksy and Hollesley would be the hub of creativity! Best wishes Alex Williams (Shingle Street) Page 11 February 2016

12 Dear Editor Thank you to all who came to sin,g especially Poppy, who was our youngest singer and stayed for the whole route, the four that braved Shingle Street on the Tuesday evening and Micky and Jane who accompanied us on two of the evenings. A grateful thank you to those who so generously provided us with delicious and most welcome refreshments and of course the many who supported us financially. We collected which is shared between Saint Elizabeth Hospice and Hollesley Church. Also, early in December, Hollesley Church held a Cake Stall outside Hollesley Shop which raised for the Woodbridge branch of the Salvation Army to help those in need at Christmas. Thank you to Chris and Carol for the use of their shop front and the most welcome cup of tea and to those who supported us by baking and buying the cakes. Joan Butcher. Dear Editor, How lucky we are in this area of the Wilford Peninsula to have an excellent emergency medical response team HABSS. At 3.30 a.m. just before Christmas, one of the responders attended a lady in Bawdsey and did so much to help before the paramedics arrived from Ipswich in their ambulance. The lady, now recovered, praises the responder who attended to her in her hour of need. A very grateful lady offers thanks to all those who helped to raise all the monies needed for emergency equipment at the Hollesley Coffee Mornings started by Beverly Lambert and also the Parish Council donations as well as the responder. Liz Mark Dear Editor, My name is Dana Rodesky and currently live in Colorado, USA. From , my husband Scott and I rented a house on Moorlands from Rob and Eileen Andrews when we were stationed at RAF Bentwaters and became great friends with them. We've kept in touch over the many years with Eileen after her husband passed. We have not heard from Eileen for quite some time and are hoping someone would give us an update on her. The address we write to is "Newlands" Alderton Road. We will be most appreciative. Thank you. Dana Rodesky, 7838 Potomac Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920, Cell Phone: Dear Editor We have been staying at Alde Cottage, Shingle Street over Christmas and remember going to Noreen Pritchard Carr s restaurant in the early 50s. Is it possible to tell me which house she lived in at the time? Brenda Noy. john.noy@btinternet.com Page 12 February

13 Dear Editor, I went for a walk on Saturday across to Sutton and when I came back went down the path to Poplar Park. I found I could not go on the path up to the gate past the bluebell woods and had to go across a very wet and muddy field, which went right past all the horses and stables of Poplar Park. There were people standing talking near the stables and houses of Poplar Park. It would have been better if I could have gone on the usual path. Judy Collins, 51 Mallard Way Dear Editor I'm a dog owner and every day I take my dog for a walk. I enjoy a walk with my dog, but there is a part of the walk which every dog owner doesn't like, that is picking up dog mess. I am new to being a dog owner, but from my experience while not being a dog owner I hate stepping in dog mess, so I make sure I pick my dog s mess up and always make sure I have plenty of bags with me to do so. For about 3 months now I have started picking up dog mess up Postman s Walk near Oak Hill. There is a very kind gentleman (Bryan Devine) who cuts the grass so we can walk up the path, but people treat this path as a dog s toilet. Now every time I walk the path I end up picking up other owners dog mess. I do this for myself, so I don't step in dog mess, but it's getting very boring knowing that there are lazy people who say they are a dog person but can't pick up their own mess. It's not as if the bags are expensive, even the local shop sells 200 for less than 2. One of Brendan s collections! Please would the lazy people pick up their dog mess. There is no excuse for not doing this as there are four bins in the area of Oak Hill. Also there are some people who do the hard work and pick up their mess put but just throw it in the hedge in a bag. Surely it's easier to throw it in a bin? If you can't pick up your dog mess you shouldn't own a dog. Brendan Crisp Brendan Crisp Page 13 February 2016

17 Fostering a Pet Can you help foster a pet in need? Blue Cross pet charity in Felixstowe is appealing to Suffolk animal lovers to join a volunteering scheme that offers temporary foster care to homeless pets until permanent homes can be found. The charity is looking for volunteers within driving distance of both its current rehoming centre in Felixstowe and its new rehoming centre near Ipswich, which is due to open early next year. Volunteer foster homes offer essential care to pets that struggle to cope in a kennel or cattery environment, animals recovering from illness or operations, and litters of kittens and puppies that benefit from being raised in a home environment. Blue Cross provides volunteers with all the equipment and skills needed to look after the pets in their own homes. Special training, costs towards veterinary treatment, pet food and animal behavioural advice are all taken care of by the charity. Andrew Gillon, Deputy Manager at Blue Cross in Suffolk adds: Blue Cross takes in thousands of homeless and unwanted pets every year. We like to get poorly, young and stressed pets into foster homes, but we desperately need more volunteers. We need foster homes in Felixstowe but we are also looking for new volunteers in the Ipswich area who can help us once we move early next year. Steve Roberts with Elsie. 19 Travelling on the Link bus The Demand responsive bus serving the villages on the Wilford Peninsula has been running for several years now. Some people use it regularly, but perhaps you may not have used it or needed to. At the end of November I slipped onto my shoulder in the garden and have not been able to drive since, with the prospect of having to manage without the car for a while yet. So I thought I would share my experiences with you, as some of us who have relied on our cars may have to manage without them in the future as we get older, or just because a car is too expensive to run. The Link bus runs from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday. It costs the same as a normal bus service, but is free with your bus pass from 7am on Saturdays and 9.30am from Monday to Friday. It is booked by phone on , where you ask for the Wilford area. Journeys are normally booked 2 days, or up to a week in advance, but sometimes a booking can be taken for the next day if your trip fits in with other folk. It s a shame the bus doesn t run in the evenings or on Sundays. During the week the latest trip is about 6.30pm, and a taxi home from Woodbridge is For many of us the actual times can be flexible, unless you have a particular appointment, and in fact it can be very enjoyable to be able to chat to someone travelling with you. Picking up is by arrangement, perhaps from a central spot such as Duck Corner, Hollesley, but I have also been driven to Shingle Street or down lanes to remote locations. The Turban is the usual destination in Woodbridge, but sometimes the bus can deliver you to Framfield Medical Centre or another location to avoid a long walk. You can also travel to Orford or Bawdsey, for an outing, arranging the return time to suit you. Since using the bus I have been very glad of a shopping trolley, as bags can feel very heavy as you shop and have to wait for the bus to take you home. If you have a hospital appointment the Link will take you to Martlesham Park and Ride, to catch the P and R bus to the Woodbridge Road hospital entrance. If you have a doctor s appointment or a hospital appointment and you are unable to walk far, then we have a Community Car Service which can help. Phone Colin Beecroft on Tony Barnard also takes patients to the Hospice. Phone him on I have been offered lifts by friends and neighbours too, and this is greatly appreciated. So, it s not the end of the world if you have to manage without the car. It needs some forward planning to book the bus, but it s quite a pleasant experience to rattle along the lanes, travelling with a friend from another village you haven t seen for ages. The drivers look after you, and help with your bags if necessary. There is wheelchair access for those who need it. Helen Lewis Contributed Page 19 February 2016

21 Alde and Ore Estuary Partnership Draft Estuary Plan Consultation The consultation at the end of last year was attended by well over 200 members of the public and the overwhelming weight of views received was in full agreement with the thrust of the plan. A number of very useful comments were made, in particular regarding any potential breach at Slaughden by the Martello Tower as defending this area of the coast is absolutely crucial to maintaining the estuary shape and the defences. The Partnership is very aware that any breach would alter the velocity and volume of water entering the estuary which would not only wreck safe sailing but put excessive pressure on the defences, and this will be reflected in the final plan. The present Shoreline Management Plan policy on the coastal defences is to hold the line south of the Martello Tower only until 2025 and the Partnership will be instigating discussions to ensure that a longer term view is adopted for this stretch of coast. The Partnership will now take account of all the comments when preparing the final document which will be submitted to the County and District Councils and Regional Flood and Coastal Committee for adoption hopefully by Easter. Coastal Defences at Slaughden Due to the recent poor weather the delivery (by sea) of rocks for the area north of the Martello Tower has been delayed and mid-february is a more likely start date. The Environment Agency held a public drop-in session in Aldeburgh Church Hall on Thursday 21 st January (2-6pm) to explain the scheme. Upgrade Schemes for Aldeburgh Town Marsh and Snape The Partnership has had a number of useful discussions on upgrade projects for both Snape (both sides of the river) and the repairs to the Aldeburgh Marsh wall to slacken the very steep landward wall which will give very much better flood defence protection. Both schemes are intertwined in terms of wall levels and will need to be considered simultaneously. Other improvements may also be possible on the Aldeburgh Marsh wall, such as a cycle path in addition to the public footpath. Also, while digging out clay to use on the landward wall, creating ponds or scrapes for wildlife is a possibility, while still allowing summer grazing to continue. This will inevitably increase the overall cost of the scheme and further discussions with all concerned (all landowners, Town/Parish Council, community etc) will be needed before costing, sourcing the required finance and agreeing final options can take place. The main aim is to not only improve the defences for the people of Snape and Aldeburgh but also to provide an exciting recreational and wildlife habitat on Aldeburgh Marsh for everyone to enjoy. Please look at our website which will keep you up to date with news and meeting dates. You can contact us via the website for any ideas you have to raise funds or even photos you would like to circulate of the estuary. Amanda Bettinson Page 21 February 2016

Members free, non-members 3. Come and join the Club! Yearly subscriptions of 5 are due in January, so this would be a good time to join. Everyone is welcome! You don t have to be an expert gardener. Just turn up at our next meeting or phone Sylvia on for more details. Although we try to increase gardening knowledge, we also aim to entertain and generally have a good laugh! We usually meet on the 3 rd or 4 th Wednesday of the month. We have guest speakers on garden-related subjects, quizzes etc. and, during the summer, plant sales, open gardens and events at the Community Garden. A coach trip to RHS Wisley is planned for June. Gardening Tips for February Dig over borders and bring pests to the surface. They will make tasty treats for the birds. Watch out for frosts! Make sure your tender plants, pots and containers remain protected with fleece, bubble wrap, etc. Remember to check that fresh water is available for the birds and has not frozen over Plant pansies, violas and primroses for early colour. Now s the time to freshen up fences and sheds with wood preserver. Kim Corani Knitting in Prison - update We have been knitting and crocheting hats and scarves for the homeless. On the 1st December I handed over 36 hats and scarves to the homeless at St Matthews at the Elephant and Castle for the ROBES project. All were gratefully received. I met some amazing characters there. We continue to knit for the homeless and will be making poppies again next year. I would also like to thank all the members of staff for their support in this. 24 Hollesley Parish Council Are you on the Hollesley Grapevine? Hollesley Parish Council is working hard to improve communications between itself and the residents of Hollesley. One of our initiatives is to establish the Hollesley Grapevine. This is an electronic newsletter that will allow Hollesley Parish Council to deliver important information to residents via . The initiative is in no way set up to compete with the excellent Village Voices publication; it will be used for items such as emergency road closures, fallen trees, warning of high winds or high tides, etc. It is anticipated that no more than one will be sent per week, with exceptions in emergency situations. If you would be interested in receiving the Hollesley Grapevine please the Parish Clerk at stating that you consent to your address being included. It is our aim to reach as many households as possible with a target of 100 participants in the first month; please help us achieve this. We look forward to hearing from you. Planning Applications One of Hollesley Parish Council s roles is to be consulted by Suffolk Coastal District Council on any planning application that is submitted for a property in Hollesley. Applications can come in at any time and the Parish Council discuss these at each of their monthly meetings. It is therefore imperative that if you have strong views on an application you make the Parish Council aware by either ing or writing to the Clerk. Your views will then be relayed to all Councillors and the comments that are submitted to SCDC from the Parish Council will take in to account your views. Neighbours of properties who have submitted an application will often be directly consulted by SCDC but this is not always the case. If you are interesting in keeping up to date with planning applications submitted for Hollesley log on to the SCDC Planning System (via the SCDC web site) and save a search for the word Hollesley. For further help please call the Clerk who will be glad to send you a guide and assist you. New Village Sign Following on from the article in last month s Village Voices, do you have any ideas as to how a new Village Sign might look? You don t have to be able to draw your ideas, just jot them down in an or letter to the Clerk and we will try to incorporate them in our design. New Defibrillator for Hollesley It is with great delight we can report that Hollesley Parish Council has been successful in obtaining a grant from the British Heart Foundation to purchase a defibrillator, with secure case and training materials, for the village. The equipment should be delivered sometime in February and will be sited at the Shepherd and Dog Inn, with kind permission of Chris and Carol Clement. In the spring we hope to arrange a First Aid course through the Suffolk Ambulance Service, if you re interested please get in touch. 25 Ringers Corner On New Year s Eve, Hollesley ringers and friends met during the evening for a small party, before decamping to the church tower soon after 11.30pm. After a short spell of ringing we paused briefly before counting down to midnight and ringing for a further quarter of an hour or so to ensure that all ringers present had a turn at ringing-in. The ropes were then hauled out of the way and to the sound of party poppers and popping corks, we toasted the New Year. Someone later said there were fireworks somewhere in the village, but we didn t hear them! Peter Harper Hollesley Ringers - New Year 2016 The 2 nd of January saw several of us greeting friends from other towers at St Matthews, Ipswich where we met for the first Suffolk Guild meeting of the New Year. Then on Sunday 3 rd it was back to our usual routine of Sunday morning ringing. During January we shall be back to Friday practices and Sunday ringing, with hopefully a couple of quarter peals to give us all the experience of ringing longer lengths. As you can see, ringing is a very sociable and rewarding activity that anyone can take part in. It just happens to take place in a church which is of course where the bells are, but don t let that fact put you off, just come and find out for yourself! 27 From our Country Kitchen Moules Marinière for 2 We can buy lovely fresh mussels here from the Deben or Brancaster. I think this is the best way to serve them, it's easy to make and brings out the flavour of the mussels. The amount given is enough for lunch. It would probably do 4 as a starter. 1 kg fresh mussels I small onion 1 tbls olive oil 1 small glass of white wine 50 ml double cream Fresh parsley, chopped Empty the mussels into the sink and check each one. Under running cold water pull away the beard and scrape off any barnacles. Put them into a colander. The mussels should be closed. If they open and do not close again after a sharp tap, then discard them. Put 2 soup plates to warm. Finely chop the onion. Warm the olive oil in a large sauce pan with a lid. Add the onion and cook gently until soft. Turn up the heat a bit and add the mussels, giving the whole pan a stir. Put the lid on and cook for a couple of minutes, then add the white wine. Cook for another few minutes then check if the mussels have opened. If so, add the parsley and some ground black pepper. Stir again, then using a slotted spoon, divide the mussels between the soup plates. Put the pan back on the heat and add the cream to the liquid. Check for seasoning, when the mixture has heated up pour over the mussels. Serve with french bread or brown bread and butter. 28 Snape and Friston Circular Walk 1. Park at Snape Maltings, where the refreshment opportunities include a restaurant, a café and the Plough and Sail pub. Walk over the bridge, along the road to a footpath sign on the left. Turn left here, up the drive to Abbey Farm. Keep right of all the buildings and follow the track as it bends round to the left. 2. At the top of the slope, follow the footpath sign and turn 90º right along the field boundary, to a lane. Cross straight over and continue on the footpath to a T-junction of footpaths by a house called Chagford among trees. Turn left past the house and cross the field. Keeping Priory Wood to your left, carry on straight, going down the next field. 3. At the footpath sign before a lane, turn sharply right, still within the field, and continue to a lane. Turn left, cross the lane and turn right at a footpath sign, up the drive to Croft Farm. Keep right across the front of the buildings and follow a series of yellow footpath arrows onto a metalled track which brings you to the A 1094 Aldeburgh road. 4. Cross straight over onto a farm track past pylons and continue for a mile, crossing a road and another track until you reach Friston Hall. 5. At a house with large metal barns to the left, note a footpath sign with a Private no lorries notice attached. Walk onto the concrete drive skirting the Hall passing a deep pit to the right. Look out for a Sandlings Path sign on your right, by a stile and small wooden gate in a non-existent fence. Turn right here diagonally across the meadow to another wooden gate and Sandlings Path sign. Page 28 February

29 6. Continue through the gate across the field to Friston village, emerging opposite the remains of a windmill. Turn left down the lane to the village green and Old Chequers pub ( ), recently re-opened after a complete refurbishment. 7. Just after the pub, turn right down Low Road. Where the tarmac lane swings right, follow a footpath sign to the left. Walk up the slope to a post with 2 yellow arrows. Turn tight here through the hedge and cross half-left a piece of uncultivated land to take a footpath leading diagonally through the crop. The path becomes indistinct amongst the crops, so keeping Saxmundham Road and Whin Cottage approximately 100 yards to your left, head towards the main road. 8. Cross the 1094 at the footpath sign and continue onto the footpath opposite along the side of a field. At a T-junction with a restricted byway, turn right along the byway. Stay on this, crossing a track and passing 2 Pauline Austerfield houses, until it ends at a tarmac lane on a 90º bend. 9. Turn left at the footpath sign onto the Sailors Path. Follow the signs and return directly to the Maltings, enjoying glorious views from the wall. Or walk straight down the lane for Snape village, the Golden Key pub ( ) and Crown Inn ( ), then turn left down the main road, over the bridge and back to the Maltings. 30 New Year s Day at Bawdsey Quay The annual swim attracted 9 brave souls to enter the water (no wet suits allowed!) and resulted in a collection for Sunrise Appeal at Ipswich hospital of 145. John White was very busy running the boat to and from Felixstowe ferry. His wife Ann was working extremely hard in the fisherman s hut on the quay making hot mulled wine, teas, coffees and giving mince pies to the customers. The day resulted in a sizeable donation to Felixstowe Volunteer Coastal Patrol of 1,440. The Boat House café was extremely busy all day. It was a very worthwhile New Year s Day and there was NO RAIN! 31 Farewell to Peggy Cole MBE of Akenfield fame Peggy Cole, who championed Suffolk and country life and who appeared in Peter Hall s film Akenfield, has died at the age of 80, after a brave battle with cancer. A long-time columnist for the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star, she was famous for her country lore, reminding us how rural Suffolk used to be, and of the values of a bygone era. Contributed Peggy outside her home at Charlsfield shortly before moving to Melton Her family have released a statement expressing the fact that Peggy was very clear she had no regrets and felt blessed to have lived a wonderful life. Her faith gave her great strength throughout her life and enabled her to approach her last days without fear. She was a true Suffolk woman, always proud of her roots. Peggy was born into a poor family before the Second World War, and never imagined the life that she would go on to live; she welcomed Princess Margaret to her council house garden, starred in a film despite never having taken an acting class and gave talks on the QE II whilst cruising around the world. She hailed from Easton, near Wickham Market, and went to school in Kettleburgh. Her father worked on the land and her mum had been in service. Peggy was in her early teens when mains water came to her village. And when she and husband Ernie married around the time of the Queen s coronation, when Peggy was 18, they went out to live in the wilds at Hoo, where they had a bucket and chuck it loo down the garden. Peggy had moved to her council house home in Charlsfield in It was later named Akenfield, after the film in which she d starred. It became famous for its thriving garden, which raised thousands of pounds for charity over 28 years. She d bought the house when Ernie died. There was just enough money for her to buy that and then in 2001, to buy her house in Melton. As she watched a barn owl flying over the fields of Charsfield, she thought, God, I am going to miss all this countryside and the country lanes. During her first evening in the new bungalow, she looked around and said to herself, Now old gal, you have got to settle down and make yourself contented. And, seven years later, she reflected that she honestly had never been more so. Suffolk and gardening were her two greatest passions, and she was blessed to be able to dedicate her life to sharing those passions with others. Cheryl Gray Page 31 November 2015

32 Cheryl Gray Cheryl Gray Hollesley WI Cutting the cake sapling. Its location is on the grass bank in front of Moorlands as you enter the village. We will watch its growth with interest. Several members joined others to sing carols in the village; never have we sung carols on such mild evenings, even the rain kept off most of the time. December saw us enjoying our meeting in the form of a Christmas party. Great fun was had by all as we partook in party food. A Christmas cake, which was made to a special recipe to mark the centenary of the WI, was cut by our oldest member Mrs Freda Baker and President, Joan Butcher. It was then washed down with a delicious glass of fizz! The in house entertainment was a treat with a specially written sketch by Daphne Fox. A medley from the WI choir, hilarious stand-up comedy from Di Barnard, a quiz and more. Definitely an evening to remember. Having decided on purchasing and planting a tree to commemorate 100 years of WI, local man Ray Cooke, very kindly agreed to plant it and erect a protective fence around the On the Agenda We are delighted that we are welcoming new members regularly and hope we continue to do so. If you re thinking it may be something for you, why not come along? You do not have to commit yourself at first, just come as a visitor to see what we do. 33 The Suffolk Heritage Garden The team celebrated a good year of progress in the garden with a splendid pub lunch at the Sorrel Horse on December 18 th. Having received a generous bequest from our first volunteer, who died a year ago, we have commissioned the second part of the pergola design which will culminate in an arbour, a seat for contemplation and seven fine oak obelisks to accommodate the clematis in the horseshoe bed. These will replace the tatty sticks that have finally rotted and collapsed. John planting trees outside the visitor centre The committee chose to use money raised by plant sales last year to plant a small grove of birch and hazel to soften the front aspect of the visitors' centre The team was laid off for January, but certain keen members have been seen creeping back to do essential maintenance jobs in the incredibly wet conditions. Beyond the chilling ice and snow, await the birds that sing. Beyond the highest mountain peak; awaits the fertile plain, The Promised Land for which I seek, the fields of golden grain; Beyond the dark awaits the light, beyond earth's sin and wrong Awaits the everlasting right, awaits the victor's song.
