1 24 November 2017 Issue 6 HUKARERE HEIGHTS Hukarere Nurtures Learners and Leaders CHAPLAIN S CHAT but the angel said to them, Don t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all people. Luke 2:10 The angel was speaking about the birth of Christ Jesus. However there are a number of you who can celebrate your own or your kohine s achievements after our prize-giving. Congratulations to all. These pictures are taken of the Baptism Service held on Sunday 5th of November. As you can see it was held outside on the site of the Chapel to come. Baptised were Whaea Dorrie s daughter Matarita and Yr 12 student Rhani Linaker-Te Karu. Many blessings to them and to Te Paea Rogers, Year 11 who made Affirmation of her faith in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The picture on the right shows Ivory Greening, Chayel Elliot-McDonald, Kui Von Oettingen, Waimarino Elliot, Cynthia Wirepa-Kingi and Whaea Marama, Hostel Manager. Chalice Bearers: Makangarangi Ratu and Krystal Te Rata-Wi flank Koka Win ready to give Matarita and Rhani their first Holy Communion. Callie Dunn leading the prayers. I baptise you, Rhani Linnaker-Te Karu. God mother kisses God daughter as she gives the candle of light. What s in this Issue? 2 2 Te Paea Rogers makes her statement of Affirmation supported by Athalia Gage and Whaea Marama. Right: Hostel singing in the service. View of the gathering from behind the altar. Matarita, Rhani and Te Paea stand front row on the left. Matarita has her Papa s photo. He was a Priest at Hukarere and his guitar presented to Hukarere is known as the Paku guitar in his memory. Many girls whose records do not show they are baptised told me that they were. This means that the majority of our girls are baptised which I am really thrilled about. Last weekend was Prize-giving and the Gift giving service. We received 70 gifts which went to Anglicare and Somerville Rest Home. Both places were thrilled to receive them. Abundant thanks for your efforts. Next Weekend Hostel will go to Kohupatiki to attend and tautoko a Chapel Service and Official welcome to Bishop Don Tamihere by Matau a Maui. Hukarere is in the Matau a Maui parish. God s Peace to you all. May your New Year also be blessed. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. Isaiah 40:5 Koka Win George CHAPLAIN
3 CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS SENIOR RACE 4:0KM COURSE Year NAME HOUSE PLACE TIMES 12 Phoenix Tuhi Wiremu 1 st Amy Witinatara Merehana 2 nd Kerri Houia Merehana 3 rd Waimarie Rutene Mataruahou 4 th Dannielle Harmer Wiremu 5 th CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS JUNIOR RACE Year NAME HOUSE PLACE TIMES 10 Aaliyah Sherman-Beamsley Merehana 1 st Crysharna-Eve Tuahine Reremoana 2 nd Aaliyah Rameka Merehana 3 rd Waimarino Elliott Mataruahou 4 th Tiana Reedy-Callaghan Merehana 5 th The previous record (2016) for Seniors was held by Phoenix Tuhi - Year 12 with the time of 22mins 20secs. This was the second year we have held our X-Country Course at Hukarere Girls College. Previous to that we have held our X-Country through the Pan Pac Forrest, but due to the Mill closing off access to the Forrest, we have had to re-invent our X-Country course to meet the financial and timetable restraints. This year the very talented Aaliyah Sherman-Beamsley Year 10, (a representative Basketball Player), was the first student to cross the line smashing the previous record by over 3 minutes. Who knows what time she may have achieved if she happen to remember her own running shoes, as she had to use a pair that I keep in my P.E shed for these moments. Chrysharna-Eve Tuahine was the first Year 9 student, who posted the 2 nd fastest time for the day. Merehana House took out 1 st place for the X-Country, with Mataruahou 2 nd place, Wiremu coming in 3 rd and Reremoana placed 4 th. A huge congratulations to all the girls to took part in this event to support their houses and one another. Mrs Kaye Ross CURRICULUM LEADER PE & HEALTH
4 HOSTEL HEIGHTS Kia ora Whãnau, Welcome to the last Hostel Heights for the year! I would like to take this opportunity to thank our boarding staff, school staff, board members, students and our whãnau for their positive contribution and support throughout the year. This year has been a roller coaster at times and it has been a blessing to have the backing of such a strong and supportive Hostel/School community. Our young ladies have certainly been kept busy this year with school, sports and Hostel commitments and most importantly preparing for the business end of their school year. We would like to take the opportunity to thank our year 13 students for their support and contribution this year and we wish them well in their future years. To our parents and whãnau, Hostel staff and management would appreciate the time taken to sit down with your daughter/moko over the school holidays to discuss with her about the expectations of behaviour and the importance of upholding and abiding by the Hostel rules and values. It is also a good opportunity to set some goals with your daughter/moko for next year and what your expectations will be for her as a boarder and student at Hukarere. We hope that you all have a safe and Merry Christmas and a prosperous happy New Year. Hostel Reports Please make sure that you discuss the Hostel report with your daughter/moko and talk about what it is that she needs to improve on and work towards for next year. It is vitally important that all our students have a positive and supportive environment to help her achieve her academic goals next year. Success doesn t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently. New Improved Menu For 2018 We are continuing to educate our girls about the importance of eating healthier wholesome food for fuel. A nutritionist will be looking at the current Hostel menus and making healthy changes that will benefit our growing busy girls. Please help to support this Kaupapa by cutting back on the amount of junk food you are sending/giving to your daughter/moko while she is residing in the Hostel.
Excess junk food will be locked up in the kai cupboard and distributed at the appropriate time, otherwise it gets eaten at dorm time etc. We also ask that you cut back on the amount of sugar that you feed your daughter. Encourage her to drink plenty of water. Phone/Device Contract A phone/device contract will be sent out during the school holidays, this is to be completed by all students who would like the use of their cell phones/devices in the hostel. Once completed and signed by parents/caregivers and students this document becomes a binding contract between Hukarere Girl s Hostel and the applicant. 5 IMPORTANT REMINDERS I have noticed that there are some uniforms that need replacing due to wear and tear. E.g. paint stains, splits and broken zips, and discoloured worn out white blouses. Please check all school uniforms before your girl returns to the Hostel in Please make sure your daughter/moko is not bringing too many clothes and belongings back to the hostel. Some of them are not looking after these items resulting in lots of lost property lying all over the hostel and items of clothing going missing and getting taken by others. Devices and other expensive items are the responsibility of the student and brought back to the Hostel at their own risk. Please ensure your girl brings back enough toiletries that she needs to start the term off. This includes shampoo, soap, roll-on deodorant, pads, etc. Hostel stock emergency supplies only. Please help to pack your girls bag. This way you know what she is taking back to school and to make sure her bag is packed tidy with clean clothes. No smokes! No drugs! No alcohol! Please make sure that your daughter/ returns to the Hostel on the correct days that have been mentioned in the end of year school pãnui. The following Contraband items are not allowed at Hostel: Chewing Gum - Gets stuck everywhere, but never in the bin and it s not a good look for our young ladies to be chewing all the time. Lollypops - Little pesky sticks are thrown and stuck everywhere. Red Skin Lollies- The paper wrapping ends up all over the Hostel but never in the bins. Energy Drinks and All Can Drinks - High sugar content and doesn t support our sugar less journey next term. Aerosol Sprays & Hair Spray - Perfume is ok. Marama Mcfarlane HOSTEL MANAGER
6 The Duke of Edinburgh s Hillary Award is a programme for year olds that is open to all young people in New Zealand regardless of background or ability. It is about young people being the best that they can be. The award programme provides a framework for personal discovery and growth through Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journeys: developing perseverance, responsibility to self and to the community. There are three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold was the first year that Hukarere Girls College signed up as Award Group with the students working towards their Bronze Award. It is to be hoped that next year, this Award will be taken up by most students from year 10 up. Jill Gray Award Leader
7 Science 2017 Kia ora from the Science Department: We have reached the end of another year. Most students have worked hard and reaped the benefits. Congratulations to all the students and their parents and care givers for your hard work and support throughout this year. We have had a busy and exciting year in the Science Department. There have been many trips and opportunities for all levels. It was a sad start to the year with Mr Groom unable to be here because of his accident but he is back on board now so next year should be great. We were very grateful for the fabulous relievers we had during this time. While the seniors are sitting examinations year 10 have been busy making Rewena bread, Irish Sour dough bread and yoghurt to complete an assessment on how micro-organisms help humans. This will go towards their NCEA Level 1. Next week they are doing a survey of the rocky shore and comparing the wildlife and environment found here with a wetlands, Pekapeka. Next year all students will be asked to purchase a homework workbook. These will prove very valuable as study notes once completed. Years 9 and 10 are again using the Scipad books at a cost of $20.00 each. Year 11 and 12 s book will cost $20.00 each and year 13 s will be $24.00 Christmas always reminds me of family gatherings at the beach, lots of fun, lots of food and lots of family. May you all enjoy this and more this Christmas. Come back next year refreshed and ready to excel. From the Science Department. Ngā mihi o te wā me te aroha nui, Na Meg Sorenson and Leigh Groom Curriculum Leader & Teacher of Science
8 Panui 2 Kai ngā muka tāngata i ōpeti mai, ka mihi! A massive acknowledgment to the turnout at the whānau hui, held after Prizegiving Saturday afternoon. Awesome outcome e hika mā! We have established that we need an estimated budget of $50,000 to cover all wānanga, kākahu, transport, tutors costs, kai during Nationals Week and National Kapa-haka wear during the time at Nationals. Thank you for all the awesome fundraising suggestions and the follow through. All proceeds from the 2018 Gala has been tagged to our journey to Nationals thank you School and BoT. Whānau we invite one and all to bring as much as you can to sell at this gala, as we need and want to make big money! A suggestion was to fundraise in your rohe and the proceeds you make will be added to the gala funds. Another suggestion was to hold the gala in a frequented, popular and accessible location. How awesome are these whakaaro, now we just need whānau to drive these kaupapa. For example, local whānau could get together and source the gala venue etc. Mā mangu, mā whero e oti ai te mahi.
A big mihi to Lynmarie Edwards and whānau and Rose Gray and her whānau for getting the ball rolling. We are still buzzing from the efforts you have made already. That s the way to get us all motivated! Hope you have all seen and commented on the new Hukarere Whānau Road to Nationals page on Facebook. If you do not indulge in this 21 st Century craze, we will endeavour to or snail trail your pānui to you. Those of you who were not at the hui on Saturday please send your address and phone numbers to Kōkā-hauwai at school. koka@hukarere.school.nz Kai te rahi o Hukarere, whakamiha kau ana. 9 Kōkā-hauwai Te Aowera Teacher in Charge of Kapa Haka
