Eastern Shore Road Riders Treasurer: Milton (Spanky) Barth Phone: Chapter Directors: Danny & Paulette Horton Phone: candyorange18@gmail.com spanky43@verizon,net Chapter Educator: Danny Horton Membership Enhancement Coordinator Rick Brown rickie72@comcast.net Happy Anniversary to US, happy anniversary to us, happy anniversary to MD-L, happy anniversary to us, and mannnnnyyy more! Can you believe we have a half of year left? Yes, here we are in the sixth month and plenty of things to do. Last month I printed the history of our chapter in the news letter and if you missed it you can find a copy on our web site. Several of members met at the Talbot Powersports open house, set up a camper, handed out material for GWRRA and MD-L and even had a little excitement. Yes there was a wheel-ee machine and someone had to show useless sense. Bob Lehmann continued his lucky streak and won of the grand prizes which was a massage for an hour. We had a lot of fun and won a few door prizes. Please come out and join us for our tenth year celebration on the tenth of June at Denny s during our regular gathering. I have contacted our charter members and hopefully they will all attend. So join in for the fun and family reunion. See you there. LET s RIDE! 2 The Month of June: June is named for the Roman goddess Juno. The month of June is a popular month for weddings, perhaps because Juno was the goddess of marriage. In ancient Rome, June was the fourth month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the sixth month of the year. It is one of the four months with thirty days. Birthstones; The traditional birthstone for June is the pearl. It is a symbol of purity and is the only gem that comes from living sea creatures. Alexandrite is an alternate birthstone for June. This unique gemstone changes color depending on the lighting conditions. It is greenish brown in color when exposed to daylight and fluorescent light, but changes to a purple reddish hue by incandescent or candlelight. It is a symbol of joy and good fortune. Another alternate birthstone for June is moonstone. It is considered a sacred stone in India. Moonstone varies in color from clear to bluish white or peach. It is a symbol of health and longevity. Flower The flower for the month of June is the rose. Roses are a symbol of love and appreciation. They are also known as the flower of passion. Roses come in a wide variety of colors. Each color has a different meaning. Red roses symbolize love, white roses symbolize innocence and purity, and light pink roses are a symbol of admiration or sympathy. Astrological Signs; Gemini and Cancer are the astrological signs for June. Birthdays from June 1st through the 20th fall under the sign of Gemini. June 21st through the 30th birthdays fall under the sign of Cancer. June Holidays and Observances; Father's Day is the most well known holiday that takes place in June. It is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th each year. It is the anniversary of the United States flag which dates back to 1777.In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs and summer begins. This takes place on June 21st, 22nd or 23rd, depending on the year. Historic Events in June; (Continued on page 3) VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 OFF TO A NEW START Page 2

3 The Month of June:, Continued (Continued from page 2) Many major events happened during the sixth month of the year. Here are four historical events that took place in June. Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity on June 15, 1752.Continental Congress adopted the United States flag known as the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777.The Pledge of Allegiance was recognized by Congress on June 22, 1942.The Korean War began on June 25, Monthly Observances; Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, Aphasia Awareness Month, Dairy Month, Flag Month, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, Rose Month, Safety Month Scleroderma Awareness Month Famous People Born in June; Many famous people were born in June. Here are just a few of them. One president: George H.W. Bush, Several actors and actresses: Tim Allen, Courtney Cox, Johnny Depp, Michael J. Fox, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Toby Maquire, Marilyn Monroe, and Meryl Streep. Singers/Musicians: Paul McCartney and Lionel Ritchie. Athletes: Joe Montana, Michael Phelps and Venus Williams. Birthday & Anniversary Greetings Birthdays: Jerry Rollyson.6-1 Anniversaries: Marie Lehmann MD-L..6-9 Best wishes for your Birthday and Anniversary Several of MD-L members visited MD-F s grand reopening and what a time it was. Spanky, Paulette and myself took our campers and stayed the night at Scott and Maloney's home Saturday night. Bob & Debbie Lehmann, George and Gail McGarrity (great couple, you need to come out and meet them) left the 7-11 at 5:45am Saturday morning to arrive at Hagerstown by 8:00am. The reopening was a huge success, with over 150 people mixing and having fun. The 50/50 was close to $ and split three ways. Many door prizes were handed out including gift cards. The parking lot was full of Goldwings and the Golden Corral staff took turns walking around all the bikes. Scott outdid himself with the impeccable planning and organization, he even made place mats for the chapters that preregistered or called. After the gathering there was a ride through the back roads of Antenum battlefields and Hagerstown, due to the number of bikes groups of 8 to10 were sent out about 5 minutes apart. We crossed several stone bridges (the name of the ride) and stopping at a waterfall. The group Paulette and I was in made the traditional and appropriate U turns and had many of us laughing. The end of the ride naturally had to stop at an ice cream shop which was very interesting. Nutter s Ice Cream Shop was established in 1996 and is a real treat, Planning a trip to Sharpsburg MD.? Be sure to stop by Nutter s Ice Cream Shop. They open at one o'clock year round. When the weather is warm, the line is looped inside the store and then down the block. The kiddie scoop is 95 cents, but the scoop is huge. You get over a cup of ice cream. If you think you can handle it, they have single, double and triple scoops. One of the favorite places in the area to visit. VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 Page 3

4 Knowledge; Break Pads Next time you have a new set of brake pads in your hand take a look at their edges. You ll see a series of numbers and letters that collectively are known as the edge code. The edge code contains specific information about the brake pad, including who made it, what type of material is used, and a description of the pad s initial friction properties. If you look at the first group of numbers and letters, you ll see something like ABC 1234 XX. It s those last two letters that are commonly misinterpreted. They are not, as some people seem to think, an indicator of the brake pad s quality or its ability to stop the motorcycle, so much as a description of how the pad will perform at different temperatures. The first letter indicates how well the pad functions at normal temperatures, which the SAE defines as being between 200 and 400 F, and the second letter is how well the pad resists fading at between 450 and 650 F, as tested on something called a Chase Machine. The edge codes run from C, which indicate a frictional coefficient of less than.015, to H, which has a coefficient of The first letter here indicates the pad s performance under normal temperatures, and the second, under high temperatures. A pad with an edge code of HH, for example, offers similar braking force whether it s hot or cold, whereas one rated FH would have somewhat less bite cold than it does hot. Confusion sets in because some people automatically assume that for a given set of pads, the higher the coefficient of friction, the more stopping power they ll have. While there s some truth to that, the pad s true stopping power is predicated by the pad material, not its (Continued on page 5) VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 Page 4

5 Knowledge Break Pads (Continued) (Continued from page 4) resistance to fade. In fact, most manufacturers will offer several different brake compounds, all with the same edge code rating, for use under differing circumstances. The bottom line is that while edge codes are an important guide to choosing a particular pad, it s not the only thing. So never assume that simply going to a pad with a high edge code will improve braking. Picking the wrong pad could have dire consequences, ranging from prematurely worn pads and rotors, to an inability to stop the motorcycle and that s as simple as ABC. Don't outrun your destiny on the Open Road... Find it! If you don't ride... then you don't know Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold everything you need NEVER argue with a woman holding a torque wrench Never try to race an old geezer, he may have one more gear than you Home is where your bike sits still long enough to leave a few drops of oil on the ground Routine maintenance should never be neglected The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rearview mirror Never be afraid to slow down Bikes don't leak oil, they mark their territory Sunglasses may look cool, but anyone who rides will tell you that biker eyewear is critical to the safety and enjoyment of the ride. 6 Joe Burger just spent two weeks in the hospital fighting blood clots, please keep him in your prayers. Vicky Smith is still continuing her recovery and Greg is still taking care of the home front. We had our day at the Pardue Stadium and shared our passion with many passer bys. With over a thousand people attending the game, and walking past our display. Even though we did not have the turnout we were hoping for we still had a good showing. My personal thanks goes out to those that showed up and gave us their support. We stayed for the game, had some great ice cream and funnel cake. Sorry to report the Shorebirds did not have success in taking the game from the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Bubba and I both said we were surprised in the amount of fun we had. The ride home that evening was cool and delightful. Sorry you missed out on a great evening and the chance to support our hobby. Thanks Spanky for putting this night together. Thanks to Talbot Powersports for coming out to support us also. Road Warriors, Travel section Bob and I have increased the odometer reading on our wing by 2,910, a few miles more and the wing will need an oil change, we did this on our trip to Key West. On May 23rd we left our home at O Dark early and 16 hours and 958 {42 miles short of an iron but run} we arrived at the home of Bruce and Melissa Schlimmee [ Former DE-B chapter directors]. For the next two days we stayed at their house enjoying their company and the 80 degree weather. On Saturday the four of us met with several members of their chapter for a weekend trip to go to the southern most point of the United States. After riding all day in 90 degree or hotter we arrived at our hotel in Florida city. After having a nice dinner at the restaurant next to the hotel we spent the rest of the evening resting and relaxing. After having a good nights sleep Bruce, Bob, Melissa and myself got a early start to finish the 125 mile trip to key West. The rest of the group didn't leave the hotel until 10 we left at 8 because we wanted to get there before the heat and traffic got bad. Three and half hours later we arrived in Key West. The reason why it took as long as it did, the road to Key West is a two lane road and the speed limit for 90% of that is 35 or 45 mph and if you exceed that you will find yourself having a safety meeting along the way. The first thing we did when we got to Key West we found the buoy that marks the southern most point because of narrow streets and a lot of foot traffic we were only able to park the bikes long enough to snap a couple of pictures and go on our way. 10 Road Warriors, Travel section: cont. (Continued from page 6) were must see attractions of Key West. The Hogs Breath Bar and Grill and Sloppy Joe's. We had lunch at Hogs Breath we all had a Hogs Breath burger what makes Sloppy Joe's popular Hemmingway once visited there. Parking is very limited but there are a few parking spaces for motorcycle only. Be careful some are only good for 6 p.m. to 6.a.m. and they don't have a problem giving you a $35.00 ticket. When we finished touring Key West we headed back to the hotel arriving in time for dinner at the Cracker Barrel. Monday the four of us left the hotel to go back to Bruce and Melissa's we didn't ride with the group because they weren't leaving the hotel until 10 and we wanted to get an earlier start. From the time we left our house to this point we had very good riding weather. About two hours away from Bruce and Melissa's we picked up a new riding buddy, Tropical Depression Bearl. We rode in and out of rain until we reached their house. We also discovered that our rain suits had a malfunction by the time we reached the house the inside of our rain suits were just as wet as the outside. Tuesday when we left Bruce and Melissa's house T D Bearl decided that we needed an escort home. All day Tuesday and Wednesday Bearl led the way Finally some where in Virginia he decided to go bother someone else. All in all we had a blast and when you can travel that many miles and the only problem you have is a malfunctioning rain suit consider your self lucky. At least we didn't have to call Rescue Plus.
