1 The Mail Boxer May 2012 BMW MOA #7 BMWRA #5 The Prez Says By Dick Olson Wild Goose ride had a good turn out, a few mechanical problems along the way and some missing riders (Were they off on a Wild Goose Hunt?...ed) but everybody made it. Tom Van Horn will have a further update for the gun class on May 5th in the newsletter or the clubs listserve. GR3 is approaching fast and the New Rally Czars are busy with getting things in order. It is quite boring stuff that I send but then again, I'm not a writer nor composer of smart and witty writings. (says who...ed) Sam, feel free to add to this. I did this on my phone after the battery went south on the laptop/tablet. And remember, it is never to late to have a happy childhood. (Amen to that...ed) Dick Sauce for the Goose I want to thank and/or apologize to all who came along yesterday - - It marked the first time (IIRC) where we had mechanical issues (John O's rig now features a fuel system that's part ballpoint pen..), AND we/i somehow lost part of the group. New member Kia Block made it her very first group ride - I'm sure her later ones will be less eventful ;-) Steve and Judy opened Madison Motorsports to us and were as usual very hospitable - keep them in mind when buying Stuff For The New Riding Season......TVH Upcoming Events May 4, 2012 Pre Crud Movie "Hogslayer-The Unapproachable Legend" 7:00pm Social 8:00pm Show $8 in advance and $10 at the door Day of Show Barrymore Theater, Madison May 5, 2012 The Class Ben & Sherry Atkinsons' in New Glarus (1212 Elmer Rd). 8 am start MAY 6, 2012: Club Breakfast Hilltop Restaurant doors open at 9:00 am meeting first then... 2 Madison BMW Club P.O. Box 152 McFarland, WI President: Dick Olson Vice President Dawn Feneht Secretary: Sherry Atkinson Membership: Jim Low org Treasurer: John Ong Newsletter Editor: Sam Garst Rally Chairs: Katy Heyning Judi Trampf From an anonymous source It's almost GR3 time which means rally season is just around the corner. Time to pull out my rally junk and begin the process of deciding what to take on the bike and what is just extra weight. The pile is a little overwhelming when I spread it out in the garage. I have collected enough camping/rally essentials to fill a truck. What to take on this years rally adventures? First is the tent. Do I go with the 6 person palace or the backpacker. No sidecar this year so I go small. I pack that tent separate form the stakes and poles, so I dig those out too. Sunshade? Well, I will need it for the National in June and its poles share the same bag with the tent poles so sure, it goes. Definitely the Kermit and the extensions. Sleeping bag of course, but which one. I've got a really nice 30 degree bag that packs nice and small but I nearly froze in it two GR3's ago. That's when I made the emergency trip to Cabalas and acquired the 0 degree bag. It's nice and warm, but a little bulky. I go for warm and will deal with the extra bulk. I bought a cot over the winter to ease my aching back and it will join the pile along with the thermorest because hey, you can't be too comfortable. I always pack my jet boil and some breakfast packets along with a misc. camp supplies bag with matches, flashlight, mallet, extra stakes, line, etc. Clothing goes into a small compression sack and toiletries have their own small bag. Camp shoes just get tucked in somewhere. My tools are already on the bike, but I need to make space for some oil and spares. Must not forget to fill the flask. Head lamp, stocking cap, rain gloves, liner, batteries, small radio, GPS, bug spray, cooler, club sweatshirt, camera, sunscreen, backpack pots, silverware, tripod, camp table, maps, snacks, more snacks, another full flask, water bottles, rain jacket. Ah well, there might still be enough time to weld up a trailer hitch... Activities Director Ben Atkinson Dennis Maly activities@madisonbmwclub.org

4 Secretary s Report by Sherry Atkinson Madison BMW club meeting minutes April 1 st President Dick called the meeting to order. Next meeting is at the Hill Top for Crud Run Day. The Peck Swap meet is coming on April 28 th. We will have 2 tables. Get your stuff to Bert ASAP. The Rally is on track. Poster have been mailed out and hopefully put up. We are listed in Rally Guides for the MOA and the RA. We are still working on the food for Friday dinner. Mischler s will be sponsoring our rally mugs this year. Anyone who wishes to volunteer and didn t get signed up at the last meeting can do so at the next breakfast. Brian Manke, ambassador for the MOA, talked about the SUPERSTAKES. If you enter, you have 61 chances to win! There will be 12 drawing s for new BMW motorcycles. Use the card in the April BMW ON magazine or register online at BMWMOA.org. and get free entry to the 40 th BMW MOA International Rally. Good Luck! The New Membership directory will be out soon! Don t forget to get your mileage forms in. We can sign and get them mailed at the next breakfast. Wisconsin holds the prestigious title again. Good job everyone! The carry conceal class will be held on May 5 th in New Glarus at Ben and Sherry Atkinson s. Directions and a map will be posted on the list serve. Tom would like to get started no later than 8:00 am. We will have 3 to 4 hour of instruction, break for lunch and head to Yellowstone for Range training. If you would like to bring your own pistol you may. Please bring around 50 rounds per pistol. Tom and Jeff will be bringing guns so if you don t have your own you will have access to one. We will be receiving printed materials, such as the DOJ manual. There will be a cost due to printing and rental of chairs and table. Several guests were in attendance. 50/50 winner: Jim Kossow Breakfast winner: Heidi Goehring
5 Finally...The Class The club CCW class will be Saturday, May 5th, at Ben & Sherry Atkinsons in New Glarus (1212 Elmer Rd. map and directions in this newsletter ) NOTE: Parking is limited at the Atkinsons, so if anyone can car(bike?)pool with others, that would be grand. I m planning to bring a couple jugs of carryout coffee and maybe some pastries (I m old school, sorry). If you want something else, feel free to bring it. I have 38 people signed up. Class will start at 8:00AM. We ll cover basic firearm safety and handling, legal/ moral/commonsense application of force, some tips on carrying, and other questions as time allows. We ll be using the DOJ CCW manual, and will take the state CCW test. We ll break for lunch between noon and 1:00, and meet at the Yellowstone Lake range for some familiarization firing. (the range is west of New Glarus on Hwy F, south of Lake road) We're also planning to administer a 30 round qualification course ). Costs are yet to be determined I have to make copies of the 54- page state manual, and exams and answer sheets, and we re providing targets and ammunition for loaner guns. If you have a handgun that you think you will use for CCW, please bring it (and a box - 50 rounds - of ammo) for us to check out. (We suggest nothing smaller than.32, but we all make our own choices). As I said earlier, a selection of loaner pieces will be available. I m not sure about a completion time, as the Yellowstone range is public. If it s crowded that day, we may have some wait time. Especial and superlative thanks to Ben and Sherry for offering a place for the class!!! If anyone has questions, or call me See yawl on the 5th TVH Once you reach New Glarus from the North turn left at the only stop light in town. If you are coming from the south turn right. Cross the small bridge and turn Right on to Elmer Road. Go past a small sub- division our house will be the next home on the left side of the road. We will put up signs. My only other concern is every year there is a Al fa Romero Car club that has a hill climb around our block. It just happens to fall on the day of our class. So if you get to the end of our road and there are road blocks up they will let you pass. I will put up signs as well Elmer Road New Glarus WI Sherry Atkinson
6 Riding and Rambling I took advantage of the lovely day today (and UW spring break) to head over to NW Illinois, a part of the driftless region that we tend to neglect. On the way, I was reminded of a lovely little shortcut between JG and 78, Lee Valley Road. We tend to head that way a fair bit, and since G south off of 18 is so pretty, this makes a nice way to get to 78 and beyond. The main purpose of the ride was to explore a Scales Mound-Galena- Savanna triangle that stands out on my Northern Illinois map, and it was totally worth it. Keep in mind that this is Illinois, so roads don t have numbers or signage. You have to divine where they are from context (turn off the GPS!). And you don t know how sharp the turns are until they re behind you. The regular road names are used on crossings at times, so in a way, Illinois is just retro, like the turn of the last century before road numbering was invented. The route from Scales Mound to Galena is Stagecoach Trail (it actually has a sign that says that), with great vistas. The route from Galena to Savanna is a combination of Blackjack Road, which runs along a very narrow ridge, and IL 84 (turn right at the T in Hanover). Finally, the route from Savanna back to Scales Mound is Scenic Ridge Road, which just randomly starts above Savanna (take Clay St. to Webster St. to 5th St., which morphs into Scenic Ridge Road), to Derinda Road, to US 20 W and then Elizabeth-Scales Mound Road out of the other side of Elizabeth. I think I ve ridden all these roads but Blackjack Road, but put together they make a really nice day outing, combined with a hike at Mississippi Palisades State Park above Savanna (Illinois state parks have free admission), which is quite pretty, very much like Wyalusing Park near Prairie du Chien. I was about the only person there on a weekday afternoon. Oh, and you probably know that prices in Galena are insane. I paid over $4 for a small dark roast. I held out for chili and fries at a normal place in Hanover for $6. Sam Hokins
