1 IN THIS ISSUE THE GOPHER GAZETTE July 19, 2011 Volume No. 2 Red Shed Report Schedule July/August All Around Match GMM June Minutes 2012 Budget Prep Legislative Report e-newsletter 600 yd Benchrest Match NMLRA Territorial Match President s Notes Pictures of Storm 2011 Board Roster Sponsors If Mother Nature did not have enough fun freezing and soaking us this winter and spring, she certainly pulled out all the stops with her July huff and puff event. The Range took a terrible beating in the late evening storm 7/1, losing countless old-growth trees and property damage to several ranges. See pictures. We are a resilient group, however, and work crews have been sweating out the debris removal. With chippers and chain saws blazing, Black Powder and 600 yd. Bench Rest competitions went on unscathed July Many thanks to all who pitched in. On another serious note, GRRC is facing an organizational crisis because it has not had a quorum at the last three meetings; no business nor motions can be approved without a minimum number of voting members present. Please plan to attend the next General Membership Meeting meeting: July 19 Red Shed Harris, Minnesota 1900 hrs. Carpool! Red Shed Report It was a dark and stormy night at Harris July 1. Straight line winds felled countless trees- many heritage oaks, and shredded canvas awnings on the KD range. The Pistol Range sustained the heaviest tree damage, with the campgrounds and road to the Shotgun range close second and third. No damage was seen on the Black Powder range, where the MNLRA Territorial Shoot took place as scheduled on July 9-10, nor on the portion of the KD Range where the 600 yd BR event was held. Kudos to the terrific work parties that removed fallen timber and did major damage control. A large commercial chipper was secured for the larger tree trash. There are still many opportunities to earn work credits. Call Dave A, Dave N or Rik R with questions. See President s notes. ALL- AROUND MATCH TARGETS on sale: The target packages for the new club member-only All-Around Match will be on sale at the July membership meeting (at the Red Shed.) Target packages are $10 each with the chance to compete in three different classes. Call Rich Williams with questions Dave Anderson reports that there is a mountain of wood chips available to members free for the taking. Bring your own container. It is piled up on the road to the Sugar Shack. BTW, he also has a new BWT (Big White Truck). If you are looking for the familiar red truck, it is no more. Dave is in slealth mode for a while. Bruce Aune and Rich Williams spend the Sunday after the storm cutting up fallen trees on the trap range. Splitting is needed. We need you. General Membership Meeting meeting is Tuesday, July 19, Red Shed, Harris, Minnesota 1900 hrs.

The targets a mixture of bullseye and novelty targets to make the match challenging and fun for everyone. It s a postal match that you have until the end of December to finish so there is plenty of time left to get involved. All of us are going to be at the range a lot this summer cleaning up the storm damage so why not combine a little fun with work. Bring a gun when you come up to work and shoot a target or two when you are done working. I have target packages with me any time I am at the range or you can call me at to get yours. - Rich Williams, Match Director

4 Budget Planning: Due in August 600 yd. Benchrest Match 7/9-10 at Harris Last month I reminded everyone that it was time to start thinking about the budget for next year. After the July 1st storm this becomes an even more necessary process. We were fortunate that damage to buildings was minor but other losses were significant. Developing short term budget and a long term rebuilding budget will be necessary. Projects will need to be looked at in terms of immediate need, future need and making sure each project works with long term range improvement and development. Think long term on your projects. If you have a plan on how you want a range or facility to develop, explain that in your proposals. Show how what you want to do this year works with what you want to do the next year and so on. Don t hide your light under a bushel. The budget committee may decide that it makes more sense to do everything you want for the next five years all at once or that what you want dovetails very nicely into another project. For example if your discipline wants to dig a hole and another discipline wants to build a hill, we can make that work together at the same time rather than two separate projects. That assessment can t be done in one evening at one meeting. So it is very important that discipline chairs, maintenance people, campground, and club members get their proposals in writing with some basic plans and cost into me by the end of August so we can have time to hold any informational meetings, ask any questions and hold budget meetings before the end of the year. - Rich Williams, GRRC Treasurer Legislative Report: Steve Marden US CONGRESSIONAL BILLS PROMOTING IMPORT OF US SERVICE WEAPONS (M1, M1 Carbine, etc.) Under these bills, firearms that are lawfully possessed by a foreign government and that are more than 50 years old and considered antiques or relics may be re-imported to properly licensed groups and sold without written permission from the U.S. Departments of State or Defense. US House Bill US Senate Bill The 600 yd. Benchrest Match took place July 9-10 at the Harris Range despite the carnage all about. Matchmaster and Discipline Chair Gordy Mitchell had 32 shooters participating on the new benchrests, above. You can see down the line in the first photo- Gordy ran a great event. The Gazette went to press before the results were known, so stay tuned for the top shooters names in the August issue. They will also be posted ASAP on the GRRC website, www. GRRC.org Pictured below is smiling participant Dave Holland, 1000 yd BR Chair. e-newsletter To sign up for your e-version of this newsletter, just click on the contact us tab at the top of the GRRC website, or send your request to pekarik1911@q. com. Please provide your member number, name and address, being sure to enter your request prior the end of any month, so the database can be updated for the next issue. As an example, to receive the August issue via , send your information prior to the end of July. Money saved on postage and printing adds up, and you are taking a small step to making GRRC more efficient and green. And...it s in color. -Dave and Karen Newell
5 NMLRA Territorial Match 7/9-10 at Harris President s Notes: Rik Rarick The events since the storm on July 1 have been a whirl of activity I have not seen since becoming a GRRC member. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our members, many of whom dropped everything to come and pitch in to repair the storm damage. They came with chippers, chainsaws, axes, trailers, and dump trucks to sweat in the heat and humidityall to get the Harris facility up and running. They did not quit until Sunday night, July 10. The power is back up, the water is running, the campgrounds are habitable, and all major tree removal has cleared the roads and range areas. What a monumental job they all did. Along with members came spouses who are not even members, rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to drag branches to the chippers. It was a heart-warming sight. The Minnesota Territorial Shoot was held at Harris Friday, July The exact events which are contested at a NMLRA Territorial Shoot are largely left to the local club which is hosting the event. Aggregates shot at GRRC s event included Offhand, Flintlock, Bench Musket, One-Gun Cross-Stick Ladies, Junior Pistol, Sub-Junior Hunters, Sighted Smoothbore, Unlimited Longhunter, Ladies Offhand Smoothbore, Intermediate Ladies Hunter Cartridge, Light Bench Ladies, and Pistol Youth Hunters. Best of all, two scheduled matches- the NMLRA Territorial Match and the 600 yd. Bench Rest Match- went on as scheduled with a minumum of disruption. Thanks to Matchmasters Rick Repovsch and Gordy Mitchell for their excellent planning and organization. Thanks to Dave Anderson and his crew who fed shooters and workers alike over the weekend. I am so proud of all those members who went above and beyond the idea of work credits. That s what GRRC is all about. There is still plenty of work to do, but shooters will be able to get to their ranges and do what we are here for: to shoot! Thanks again. Scores were not available at press time, so watch the August Gazette and website for more information and final aggregates. Shown below are visiting shooter Bob Gilpin coaching his two grandsons. They are (l.) Jovian Gilpin from River Falls WI, and Otto Heuschele (r.) from Virginia Beach, VA. The boys were having a terrific time with their grandparents, and getting first-rate instruction in shooting and safety in their sport. The BP Range was virtually untouched by the storm. The new shelter withstood the winds and rain. Many families participate in this annual event, and there are a wide variety of matches. Matchmaster Rick Repovsch was sporting a new knee, but ran a great match. 5
