1 Safety Highlights November was Emergency Response training month for Caltrain. This year s training exercise was held at the south end of our service corridor in the City of Gilroy. Caltrain s Safety and Risk Management group led the effort, which included, Rail Operations, San Mateo County Sheriff s Transit Police Unit, Maintenance and Public Affairs, These participants were joined by Transit America Services Inc. (TASI), Gilroy Fire, Cal Fire, Morgan Hill Fire, Gilroy PD, County Ambulance, Mountain View Fire, Falck Ambulance, Royal Ambulance, Westmed, Santa Clara EMS, and a group of community volunteers from Mission College, Foothill High School and Pleasanton Middle School. Volunteers played rail accident victims requiring evacuation and treatment by emergency responders. The exercise was monitored by the Federal Railroad Administration, California Public Utilities Commission (State Safety Oversight), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). 1

In each instance, the person was arrested and booked into county jail. Nov. 1 Nov. 30: Transit Police responded to eight reports of persons trespassing on the Caltrain right of way. In each instance, the person was cited and released. Nov. 1 Nov. 30: Transit Police conducted routine security checks at various Caltrain stations. As a result, seven persons were arrested on outstanding misdemeanor and felony warrants and booked into county jail. Nov. 1 Nov. 30: Transit Police received 18 reports of bicycle thefts from various Caltrain stations. The largest number of thefts (nine) occurred at the Palo Alto Caltrain Station. Nov. 1 Nov. 30: Transit Police received one report of vehicle vandalism at the Hillsdale Caltrain Station in San Mateo and recovered one stolen vehicle at the Redwood City Caltrain Station. Nov. 3: Transit Police responded to the Redwood City Caltrain Station on a report of an adult female who had attempted suicide by overdosing on medications. The woman was located, taken into protective custody, and transported to emergency psychiatric care. 2

3 Nov. 10: Transit Police responded to the Hillsdale Caltrain Station in San Mateo on a report of vandalism. Nine benches were vandalized on both northbound and southbound platforms. There are no leads. Total estimated damage is $250. Nov. 12: Transit Police responded to the San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station on a report of an adult male who had called 911 and threatened suicide. The person was located, taken into protective custody, and transported to emergency psychiatric care. Nov. 18: Transit Police responded to the Palo Alto Caltrain Station on a report of a suicidal adult male. The person was located, taken into protective custody, and transported to emergency psychiatric care. Nov. 18: Transit Police responded to the Ravenswood Grade Crossing in Menlo Park on a report of southbound train versus a vehicle. There were no injuries and the vehicle was towed from the scene. Nov. 24: Transit Police responded to the Redwood City Caltrain Station on a report of an unknown medical call. The person was acting erratically and being aggressive. He was taken into protective custody, and transported to emergency psychiatric care. Engineering General TASI Managers performed a Safety Audit of Maintenance of Way, Communications & Signal, and Stations throughout the corridor. Maintenance of Way Placed 20 tons of ballast on the main line track Surfaced 6,356 lineal feet of track Surfaced four mainline switches Installed 37 nine-foot wood ties on the main line Installed 39 nine-foot wood ties & 13 ten-foot wood switch ties at the UPRR yard in South San Francisco 3

4 Installed new carpet at the Rail Lubricator near Bayshore Station Cleared vegetation at CP De La Cruz (photos below) Before After Stations Replaced the PNA stencils on the San Mateo platforms 4

5 Replaced the stencils in the Redwood City Parking lot Communications & Signal Installed additional radios to help boost the existing signal for Advanced Train Control System(ATCS) and reduce interruptions 5
