1 Dogwood Sam s Tales and Trails February 2013 Chapter #142 Meet Peggy Lee, Treasurer President Lawrence Merino Vice President Armando Lozano Secretary/Newsletter Barbara Nuckols Treasurer Peggy Lee Robert and I were married January 1962, in Jackson, Mississippi. We have two children. Melissa and Robert. Melissa has two children., Jessica and Alexis. Alexis is thirteen years old and in competitive cheerleading, so we do a lot of traveling with her. Robert was transferred to Pensacola with Pure Oil Company in Our move brought some changes to our lives, we bought a pop-up camper and did a lot of camping. We also got a boat and took advantage of all the water in the area, water skiing and boating. We later purchased a houseboat in Van Cleave, Mississippi, and kinda quit camping for a few years. After about fifteen years we purchased a travel trailer and stared camping again. We love going out West and to the New England states. We have traveled to all the states except North Dakota. We really enjoy the out doors and camping with friends and family. About three years ago we joined the Dogwood Good Sam s camping chapter. We have met so many nice people and made some wonderful friends. We have been to two Samborees and had a great time. We are looking forward to many more years of camping. Peggy Lee, treasurer Wagon master Larry Blake Webmaster Larry Blake
2 February Chapter News Thirteen rigs made the trip to Century, Fl and beautiful Lake Stone. It was good to see that Escambia County has installed heat and air conditioning in the club house. I remember last years camp-out at Lake Stone when it turned so cold and we relied on the huge fireplace for heat. It all worked out and we stayed warm. The chapter welcomed Lonnie Myers and family back after his scary stay in the hospital. He looked well and has given up cigarettes! Yay Lonnie, keep up the good work! Donna (Lonnie s wife) thanked everybody for their prayers and well wishes. Peggy Lee updated her plans as the new chapter treasurer. This included a new bank, Members First as it is closer to her home. Also by show of hands Barbara Nuckols will remain as the third signature for checking purposes. The chapter did not receive thank you letters from the Ronald Mc Donald House or the USO. The reason could reflect the change of staff. Chapter was reminded to keep bringing can tabs and snacks for the USO. The airport USO needs snacks that are ready made, while the USO at Pensacola NAS has the equipment to cook their food. So keep that in mind when purchasing your donations. Lois Crutchfield announced the menu for next camp-out. Friday night will be hot dogs and all the fixins. Saturday breakfast will be different. Members are asked to bring their own freezer zip lock bags, these bags will be used to make individual omelets. To do this, you will need to chop onion, peppers or anything else you would like in your omelet, and place in your zip lock bag. Then you can add your egg mixture, which will be placed in boiling water for a few minutes, and viola! You have a yummy omelet! Saturday night dinner will have the Italian theme. Wagon master Larry Blake announced plans for the next camp-out. The chapter will be staying close to home next month. We will be camping at The Farmers Opry in Chumuckla, Fl. The Farmers Opry has changed ownership and no longer offers entertainment and the buffet. However, they still have a great campground and reasonable prices. The price for camping is $27.97 per night that includes tax. To make your reservations, call and speak to either Jessica or Carrie. Thanks go out to Saturday morning cooks, Larry, Mondo and Donna. Next months cooks are scheduled to be: Lonnie, Bill, and Frenchie. Jackie Blake organized chapter ladies to help make valentine cards for the local nursing home. It sure looks like they had fun designing some really elaborate cards.

5 Submitted by Charlie and Barbara Shady Lady Shady, is a rescued Great Dane and will be eight years old in May of this year. Eight years old for a Great Dane is considered senior. Great Danes, because of their size don t have the life expectancy of other breeds. Shade however, is the exception, she has the energy of a much younger dog. We adopted Shade about two weeks ago from the local Great Dane rescue. I have never had a Dane before, but Charlie has had three over the years and convinced me they are wonderful dogs. I have to agree with him. Not knowing the back ground where Shady came from, we weren't sure how she would fit in with our pack. She is just fine and very well behaved. Being a rescue dog you have to imagine her life wasn t the greatest, but having dealt with greyhound rescue for many years, we discovered these rescue dogs really appreciate a warm bed and good food. Shady has been for a ride in the motor home, but hasn t experienced camping with us yet. She will be with us at the March camp-out in Chumuckla. I pretty sure she will do okay, she tends to be content as long as she is with us. She is friendly, but is also protective of her people, that s just the Great Dane make-up. That was another reason we decided to adopt a Dane. Our house was broken into last month, just after we returned from camping. In the middle of the night, we were home, asleep and so were our dogs.. Asleep! They, the dogs didn t make a peep. The security alarm went off and the intruders left. I hate to think what would have happened to us if we had not had the security system installed a few weeks prior. So hopefully Shady will not sleep through a break in, if it should ever happen again.
6 Need a mechanic in Babb, Mt. The alternator in our Chevy Malibu started acting up in T. Roosevelt National Park. The little light would go on and off. There was nothing my husband could do until we got back to the campsite in Medora, N.D. Did he do anything then? No, his reasoning was that a new alternator was installed before we left Milton. We just drove, with the little light coming on for awhile, then going off. We left Medora heading for St Mary, Montana and National Glacier Park. We are still driving the car with the same problem. We drove the car going over the Going to the Sun Road, no trouble, the little light still acting up! Is my husband worried? On a trip to another part of the park, the entrance located in Babb, Montana. We did our thing there, boat ride, and visiting the Many Glacier Motel. Left the park, and on the drive to Babb that little light came on and I knew that was it. We coasted into a very country store with what I called a flat line (dead) car. Inquired inside if there was mechanic available, someone said they knew of one, and they would call him. There was no answer, but a message was left. In a short time he called the gentleman back and said he would be there in thirty minutes. True to his word he arrived in thirty minutes, a full blooded Native American. Randy Feathers hooked up the jumper cables and we started the car. He checked the alternator for any output...zero! Of course we knew that, can you fix it? He said yes,but not today. He went on to explain that there were no parts stores in the area, the nearest one being sixty miles away in Cut Bank. So my dear husband and Randy discussed a plan of action. Without our knowing it, Randy was camping about two miles from where our campsite was in St Mary. He was in a tee pee he made himself. We left the battery on charge for awhile, then took off for the campground, Randy following. The car flat lined just as we pulled into the campground and we coasted to our campsite. Randy would be back to remove the alternator. He came back late that afternoon, with his girlfriend, also an Indian from Canada. He came back the next morning to pick up Lawrence and the drive to Cut Bank. His girlfriend was with him, sound asleep in the back seat, Lawrence said she slept for the entire trip. They arrived back two and a half hours later, with a new alternator and battery. The girlfriend was still asleep. For $100 labor and a good story to tell, we were happy and able to continue our trip. God answered another prayer for us. I have Randy s cell number if anyone thinks they might be in the area and in need of a good mechanic. Lawrence and Toni Merino
7 My Favorite Recipe Corn Bread Cake Submitted by Lorra Robert 1 cup of sugar or 1/2 of Splenda sugar substitute for baking 1 cup brown sugar or 1/2 cup Splenda brown sugar blend 4 eggs, beaten 1 cup canola oil 1 1/2 cups sifted self raising flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup pecans chopped Preheat oven to 350 degrees, lightly grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking dish Stir together sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and oil in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in flour and vanilla, add pecans, stir until evenly mixed. Spoon into prepared baking dish and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. New comers Rex and Dianna Hughes brought this to the camp-out and received rave reviews.
8 Barbara Nuckols Awww, Valentines Day. The day of red hearts, roses, candy hearts, and four foot high stuffed teddy bears? Really? I told Charlie right off the bat I don t want a giant teddy bear. I guess I m just getting old and cynical, but some of the things they come up with to spend your money on, are plain ridiculous. In the first place where would you put a huge toy like that? Not on my bed, that s for sure. Well anyway, I d settle for a box of chocolates and some flowers, let s see what I get!! The ladies of the chapter made valentine cards for the local nursing home while camping at Lake Stone in Century. Jackie asked for stuff to help make the cards. I looked in a few stores including Wal-Mart and JoAnn s. They really didn t have much to choose from. I remember when I was a kid in school, Valentines Day was always exciting, especially for us girls. I always wondered if the boy I had been admiring would send me a card, or better yet should I send him one? Would he be my valentine for maybe just that one day? It was always a day full of anticipation and fun. We bought our cards by the sack full, already made up with their own envelopes and everything. We also created our mailboxes and set them on our desks. All we had to do was sign our names. and deliver our cards. Okay so that then, I did not see any of those pre-packaged valentine cards. Don t kids do that anymore? That is sad, there are so many things that has effected the values and morals of the youth of today. Simple pleasures that we grew up with and assumed they would be life long traditions. I m so glad my children grew up in times when you could still buy valentine cards by the sack full, and give them to your friends. The ladies of the chapter were able to construct some beautiful valentine cards, for the folks at the nursing home. I m sure they thought of their childhood days and remembered that boy or girl they gave a valentine card to. I wonder if it still made them blush!
