5 Sunday 14 September Monday 15 September Tea with Lady Susan (an early novel by Jane Austen) Other Lives Productions 3.30pm 5.30pm Swine Moor Spa Swine Moor Beverley common land East Riding Archaeological Society 10am 4pm In the 18th century Beverley Corporation decided that they too (like Harrogate, Scarborough and Bath) should have a spa, with waters to drink, bathing pools for men and women, and even a ballroom on the middle of Swine Moor, where there was a spring of sulphurous water. It was not hugely successful, but the spa was used into the 19th century. The archaeologists will make a measured ground survey of the area of the spa, and see how much they can recover of its past, without excavating. All welcome, turn up on the day, see what is happening and join in. Wellingtons are advised, and there are no facilities: it is not a suitable site for people with walking difficulties. The site is at the north end of Swine Moor, and west of the Barmston Drain, marked by a small ring of hawthorns. The best approach is via the footpath that starts from the A1035 Beverley - Hornsea road. Look out for the Cherry Lane Garden Centre (N side of the A1035), E of the Swinemoor roundabout. The footpath is almost opposite the garden centre, but on the south side of the road. Parking possible on the old road. It has been adapted by Other Lives to be performed by the two main characters, who will be in 18th-century dress, parts taken by two professional Beverley actors Jessica Duffield and Annie Kirkman. It is a dark novel, for the heroine is a cunning and beautiful woman, whose aim is obtain a rich and preferably but not necessarily interesting husband. After the performance, enjoy the delicious and oldfashioned afternoon tea provided at your table by the Beverley Arms. 7 Tuesday 16 September Wednesday 17 September Georgian Houses in Beverley: outside and in Austen Redman, Georgian Society for East Yorkshire. Sponsored by the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire. 7pm 9pm Although we see Georgian houses every day we do not see them as their original owners did. In this talk we look at the way Georgian houses were used and how these uses shaped their architecture. The talk will look at three middle class houses in Beverley, from the early, middle and late Georgian periods. Using contemporary illustrations and writing, the appearance of these houses, including their internal decoration, will be reconstructed, along with the likely organisation of domestic life within them. Austen Redman BArch MA studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Lincoln. He has written dissertations on the work of the Bolton architects Bradshaw Gass & Hope and on the Building Design Partnership. He contributed a paper to Making Manchester (2007), a festschrift for John Archer, and with David Neave co-authored Georgian Architecture & The Georgian Society for East Yorkshire (2014). He is a member of the executive committee of the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire and currently works as an assistant for Francis Johnson and Partners in Bridlington. Masonic Hall, Trinity Lane, Beverley Presented by the Beverley Film Society 7.30pm 9.15pm Ridicule is set in the 18th century at the decadent court of Versailles, where social status can rise and fall based on one s ability to mete out witty insults and avoid ridicule oneself. The story examines the social injustices of late 18th century France showing the corruption and callousness of the aristocrats. BAFTA Winner of Best Film Not in the English Language To watch a trailer: Special Offer! 8 Thursday 18 September Friday 19 September Mary Wollstonecraft: feminist and philosopher Talk by Professor Fiona Stafford, Somerville College, Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. Sponsored by the Department of English, University of Hull, and the East Riding of Yorkshire Local History Society. 6pm 7.30pm - advance tickets only (limited) Mary Wollstonecraft is one of the most significant figures in the campaign for women s rights. In 1792 she published A Vindication of the Rights of Women, a book that began to change the way that women were regarded in the Western World. She spent much of her childhood on a Walkington farm and later lived in Beverley where she was educated by Dr John Arden, FRS, at his house in North Bar Within, near the Beverley Arms. Arden, a lecturer in science and philosophy, was associated with William Constable of Burton Constable: his son also John Arden went on to become a wine merchant (Arden s Vaults) and nine times mayor of Beverley. Mary Wollstonecraft is probably the most influential woman ever to have lived in Beverley, yet her story is largely forgotten in the town. Her daughter Mary Godwin married the poet Shelley, and wrote Frankenstein, sometimes called the first sci-fi novel. Professor Stafford is an expert on 18th century literature and English Romanticism and the winner of the 2011 British Academy Rose Mary Crawshay Prize. Wine will be available to buy after the talk. Tickets must be obtained in advance from the Beverley Tourist Information Centre. Claret tastings at the Guildhall The Parlour, The Guildhall 6.45pm 9.30pm The Georgians were great drinkers of claret, the term used by wine buffs to refer to red wine from Bordeaux, a more expensive wine than the Beaujolais. To be fashionable you had to call it claret rather than Bordeaux. The claret jug (wine was usually decanted) is said to date from c Come and taste different clarets, and learn much more about this delicious wine. Less well-known is the work carried out by Wren s assistant, Nicholas Hawksmoor, just after the accession of George I - including saving the north transept from collapse. The tour introduces us to the highlights of this early 18th century restoration. Tickets: 5 (to include leaflet) from the Beverley Tourist Information Centre. 10 Sunday 21 September Sponsors Proclamation of George I Saturday Market Beverley Noon 2pm The re-enactment of the 1714 proclamation of George I as king of Great Britain at the Market Cross. A civic ceremony, with military music, 18th century soldiers drills (John Lambton s 68th foot), firing of volleys and church bells, and some free food. Heritage Lottery Fund East Riding of Yorkshire Council Beverley Town Council Beverley Renaissance Partnership Beverley & District Civic Society Georgian Society for East Yorkshire EY Events Friends of Saturday Market will be the home for the day to John Lambton s 68th foot, a re-enactment group of 18th-century soldiers associated with the Durham Light Infantry. They will set up camp, perform drills and fire volleys to mark the ceremony. For centuries sovereigns have been proclaimed at Beverley s Saturday Market Cross, and from the time of Queen Elizabeth I this was the duty of the Mayor and Council. In 1573 the Beverley markets were given to the Mayor for the time being forever hereafter. His staff was a town clerk, two sergeants at mace, the macebearer, the common crier, the pinder and the beadle. In 2014 the staff are much reduced, but the town s mace-bearer (who carries the town s historic mace) will proclaim the succession of King George I as King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, using the original words of The Beverley Georgian Festival Committee is immensely grateful to the many people who have given their time freely to make this Festival a reality: too many people to thank individually here. In particular, the owners of the buildings opened to the public, the stewards, the organisations and individuals that contributed the events. We acknowledge the receipt of much excellent advice from the organisers of the Cockermouth Georgian Fair is also the 300th birthday of the Market Cross. It was the custom in previous centuries for the council to wine and dine hundreds of Beverlonians at such events; you will be offered (until they run out) free Beverley Cross buns and a piece of the Market Cross s birthday cake, made with a recipe from Wine is another matter (but look around, there are possibilities). Free event including Beverley Cross buns and birthday cake! Designed and Printed by Print and Design, Beverley printanddesign@eastriding.gov.uk
