1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Welcome Record Volume 33 Issue 37 Wednesday 3rd October 2018 Donation: 50c Dunolly Arts Hub Story Seat Project The Dunolly Arts Hub Story Seat has finally been installed. We have been patiently waiting for our seat since we finished the project in May. Many thanks to Go Goldfields, our lead artist & facilitator Kerry Punton, and the community artists involved: Jo Osborne, Faye Arnold, Deb Murray, Susan Day and Lynda Vater. Our story seat depicts the story of a greedy frog who drank all the water in the land causing a bad drought. The animals decided to make him laugh so he would give back the water to the country. So first a turtle told a knock-knock joke; he just smirked. Next Mrs Cockatoo did aerial antics to try and make him laugh, but he only gave a tiny chuckle. Then up hopped Mrs Kangaroo who produced five baby echidnas from her pouch and proceeded to juggle them. Well he gave a huge belly laugh and the water poured from his mouth. The drought ended and the animals in the country were happy again. We thought this story resonated with how we are always waiting for rain in rural Victoria. The seat features native fauna and flora from our region. We have illustrated it using a torn-paper medium and recycled materials. These artworks were photographed, then digitally put together like a jigsaw and printed onto a vinyl wrap similar to what they use in Melbourne to wrap the buses and trams. The seat itself was designed and fabricated locally and is a great sculptural base. We, as a group, also published a book of our artworks to accompany the story seat. This book will be published and for sale at our Annual Art Show Lynda Vater Above: Close-up of artwork. Below left: Front view Below right: Rear view. Reminder Daylight Saving begins this Sunday

Did you know that this is Sleep Week? This is not to encourage everyone to stay in bed longer it is to study the reasons why some people find it difficult to get a good night's sleep. As I have been travelling home from Maryborough almost every evening lately, I have found out where the mobs of kangaroos hang out at that time of day. Last night the mob near Simson had unusual companions a couple of black alpacas (yes, alpacas again). There are sheep in that paddock, so I presume the alpacas were just checking that the roos are not a threat to their charges. Sister Ramble wondered if they were worried that the roos might eat too much precious grass. I was looking through the brochures that arrive on Thursday and found the big German was reminding us not to forget Christmas! Ahah, I thought, they have beaten the fresh food people to Christmas this year. But no, there was a reminder in WW's newsletter. This was in September. The beautiful yellow Boronia that I bought and enjoyed last year is filling the back verandah with fragrance again. This is in spite of being repotted and living in the cold greenhouse" over winter. I love it! This is women's business I have found a cure for the dreaded slipping bra strap. It is a small piece of silicone that slips under the strap on one's shoulder and holds the strap in place. Marvellous no more strangulated upper arm muscle. Available in good lingerie shops. Rosie RELAXING- Enjoy a sunset up to the point you realise the colours are caused by airborne pollutants. 3 3rd October 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 37 Page 3 LETTERS TO EDITOR Are you ready for the Fire Season? If the present dry spring continues as forecast, fire restrictions could be in place by the end of October. As part of their fire preparedness, the Dunolly CFA has arranged for a visual display unit on Broadway on Saturday 13th October. The display will consist of a large TV screen continually showing all aspects of fire preparedness and prevention. Dunolly, like all rural villages faces the threat of an ember attack. During high fire-danger days embers can travel several kilometres and it only needs a patch of dry grass or even that couch on the verandah to create a potential fire hazard. With ideal conditions, a fire on Mount Bealiba could create an ember storm in Dunolly. You are invited to inspect the visual display and discuss the potential hazards of the fire season with the Dunolly fire brigade members. Jim McKenzie Farewell from Quinn Four and a half years ago, a young, bright-eyed Filipina girl, hopped on a train from Melbourne to Dunolly to attend a job interview to be a practice nurse. On the same day she was able to inspect a rental unit which she eventually called home for the next four years. Later in the afternoon her new landlady, Faye Nicholson, kindly offered to give her a lift to the bus stop. They had to wait at the intersection of Elgin & Lawrence St because there were three cars on the left side coming from the Dunolly primary school and another two cars on the right side. Faye then made a comment and said, you know what Quinn, this is already heavy traffic in Dunolly!. The young, bright-eyed Filipina girl then thought, Whoa! This is a different kettle of fish to my lifestyle in Melbourne, but what the heck, I ll give it a go. As they say, the rest was history. She was fortunate enough to learn the ropes in general practice with the guidance of Dr Soomro and the neverending support of Judy and Leanne. She was known as the town vampire of Dunolly, for her blood-drawing skills. Management plans and health assessment has also been introduced in the surgery. She felt privileged to have patients that accepted her with open-arms and in a way, became part of their lives, by giving her a glimpse of what s happening in their lives and their family s through the little chats she always managed to sneak in whenever she did her blood draw, vaccinations, wound dressing or while patients were waiting for their consultation at the waiting room. Living thousands of miles from her family has its challenges, but she eventually found a few sets of Aussie parents who helped her in adapting to living in a small Australian country town. Namely Jan & Fred Watts, Eva Hartmann & Harold Sturni, may his soul rest in peace, and Irene & Bryan Jackson, Luz & John Webb, and Annie & Terry Best. They taught her how to drive, explained the meaning of slang words she heard at the surgery or sometimes from them too, softened up her strong American/Filipino accent, enlightened her about the rules of footy and cricket, kept her well-fed with all sorts of Australian cuisine and imparted wisdom about the Australian culture and life itself. She felt blessed to have great friends who treated her like family, excellent colleagues and exceptional patients, however, living thousands of miles away from her family in the Philippines has finally taken its toll to this not-so-young anymore, but still bright-eyed Filipina nurse. Seeing her family on the other side of a computer screen during holidays & family reunions was not cutting it anymore. I was very disheartened to make this decision, however I shall be resigning on 12th October and flying back overseas for a few months to resolve a few family matters and to spend some needed quality time with my family. I shall be coming back to Australia next year and will hopefully find a job immediately in Melbourne. I m dreading to be part of the rat race again in the city but this is a sacrifice I am willing to make for my two younger brothers, who will be arriving next year. I know how hard it was when I first arrived in a new country, with a different culture and a different language, so I would like to be able to guide them in this new chapter of their lives. I would like to thank everyone for giving me a chance to be part of your lives. I shall be forever grateful for the friendship I gained during my stay in this lovely country town of Dunolly. I hope you will all look after yourselves, exercise at least 30 minutes, 5 days in a week, eat in moderation and drink 6-8 glasses of water every day, even if it s winter! Quinchen Quinn Magtoto RN1 Volunteers are needed to assist at The Welcome Record. The paper would like to have an extensive roster of people who are willing to give a few hours on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The positions are for proof-readers, printing and paper delivery. At the moment, our pool of volunteers is quite small. This does not allow for flexibility to cover unexpected illness, family emergencies or for staff to take time off. Your contribution will be most welcome and appreciated. The Welcome Record Team. Call us on Tuesday and Wednesday only, or welcomerecords@iinet.net.au The Editor

5 3rd October 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 37 Page 5 Melbourne. The train to Dunolly will be the first passenger rail service to the town since 1981, when the Hamer Liberal Government closed the Dunolly Railway Station to passenger services on Sunday, October 4, 1981 along with 35 other country railway stations that were closed. The closure of the Dunolly Railway Station was done under the New Deal timetable for regional Victoria, which consigned country residents to a cramped, inferior and inefficient coach service that still operates across the state. The reintroduction of Dunolly to the Regional Rail Network will establish the town as a destination again and provide the town's people with connection and improved mobility and a positive impact to the town's economy, cultural and social events, and tourism. The train will arrive in Dunolly at 11.58am and depart at 12.46pm. This will give passengers a brief time to view Dunolly and have some lunch at local businesses. The cost of the full trip Newport to Dunolly return is $120; half trip $80 and single sections $30. Bookings are essential. Phone Noel Laidlaw Max Berry Train coming to Dunolly After organising a successful train from Maryborough to Melbourne for the 2014 election that proved conclusively that a passenger service could link the regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat and Maryborough. Rail Revival Alliance Victoria (RRAV) has organised another regional train trip, this time from Newport to Dunolly on Saturday, 13th October, ahead of the 2018 Victorian election on 24th November. Unfortunately, Bendigo missed out on the 2014 trip because of the closure of the Castlemaine to Maryborough section of the rail line. The Rail Revival Alliance Victoria is again organising an historic Diesel Electric Rail Motor, this time travelling from Newport via Geelong, Ballarat and Maryborough to Dunolly. The purpose of the train is to maintain the pressure on the political parties coming up to the election, to honour their policies and commitment to extend the Maryborough passenger service to Dunolly. The trip to Dunolly by the Rail Revival Alliance Victoria is also to endorse the reintroduction of a passenger rail service to Mildura. So why stop the passenger service at Dunolly when other towns beyond Dunolly should be provided with a passenger service? The Rail Revival Alliance Victoria has been advocating and lobbying to extend the passenger rail network, so that country and regional Victorians have the same access and entitlement to efficient and punctual passenger rail services as people who reside in New Gift Shop Dunolly has welcomed a new Gift shop named Nik Naks and Gallery in the old Cockatoo café on Broadway, later the original chemist. The new shop is being run by Thea and Mal who told me they are thrilled to have settled in Dunolly. They love the town, the lifestyle change and the friendly people. They have stripped back the nice old brick walls to their original state which adds character to the place. In winter they plan to stoke up the old fireplace. The shop is stocked with beautiful vases and ornaments, crystals, lamps and paintings. There are also handbags and a men s corner with memorabilia collectibles and children s vintage toys. There s a gift idea for everyone and all are welcome to drop in and even if you are not making a purchase, stop for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. The shop opens on Friday 5th October 2018, and the Welcome Launch is from 3pm to 5pm. Cynthia Lindsay Grand Opening Dunolly Nik Naks & Gallery Friday 5th October, 2018 Formerly the Cockatoo Café at 116 Broadway, the shop will be open from 10am with the Launch taking place between 3pm - 5pm. We will be serving finger-food, tea, coffee and a glass of wine to help celebrate. We look forward to our new and old friends joining us. See you there! Mal & Thea

7 3rd October 2018 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 33 Issue 37 Page 7 Fee free waste disposal days to continue Following a decision at Council s September meeting, fee free waste disposal days will now continue to be held one day per quarter throughout the year. The decision to continue the program comes after a year -long trial which included four fee free waste disposal days at Council s landfills and transfer stations in November 2017, and this year in February, May and August. In total, 1293 customers took advantage of the trial, which collected cubic metres of waste, 476 cubic metres of green waste, 56.6 cubic metres of recyclables and cubic metres of steel. Thirty-seven white goods were also collected during the trial. Fee free waste days enable community members to dispose of up to four cubic metres of general domestic waste free of charge, including green waste, mixed recyclables, general household waste and refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. Charges still apply for tyres, bricks and concrete, mattresses and e-waste. This is because these items have additional third party costs associated with their disposal. Council will notify the community when the next fee free waste day is due to take place. Community satisfaction survey closing soon If you have received a survey asking you to provide your views and opinions about Loddon Shire Council, please ensure you return your survey by Monday 8 October. The survey, which should take about 15 minutes to complete, is an opportunity to have your say on the Council services that matter most to you and provide feedback regarding Council and other issues. The input you provide is also valuable in terms of helping Council improve future service provision. The survey is being undertaken on behalf of Council by Key Research Group and involves surveys to randomly selected households in the Shire. Council will be conducting these surveys with different community members every quarter this is to ensure we get a range of feedback from as many of our residents as possible. Therefore, you can expect to be asked to provide your feedback about once per year. If your household has received a survey and you have any questions or feedback about the survey, please call Thinkfield on The next survey will be conducted from Friday 30 November to Friday 21 December. Volunteer Strategy out for comment Council is asking for your thoughts on its draft Volunteer Strategy, which is now out for public comment until Sunday 28 October This is the first strategy that Council has developed that focuses on the volunteer experience and a strategic approach to attracting, retaining, developing and recognising volunteers in our Shire. It was developed in consultation with the community, including surveys of volunteers and community workshops to gain feedback around volunteering in the Shire. The draft Volunteer Strategy can be viewed on Council s website at Copies are also available for viewing at Council s Wedderburn and Serpentine offices. For more information about the draft Volunteer Strategy call Council on Australia Day Awards nominations close 12 October Finally this week, I d like to remind our community that nominations for the 2019 Australia Day Awards close on Friday 12 October. If you know of someone or a group in our community who have made a significant contribution or have an outstanding achievement, please ensure you put their names forward for nomination. Nominations are also still open for the 2019 Community Service Awards, which recognise the outstanding contribution to the local community during 2018 or noteworthy service to the local community over a number of years. An award is presented for each ward (Boort, Inglewood, Tarnagulla, Terrick and Wedderburn). For more information or nomination forms visit Forms and information are also available from the Wedderburn Shire office on , or by contacting Shannon Brown on or loddonausday@bigpond.com. Did you know? While many of us know about the roads, rates and rubbish side of Council, you may not know that councils actually deliver more than 100 services (plus facilities) to communities. For our Shire this includes outdoor pools, animal management, public health, immunisations, maternal and child health, kindergartens, recreation reserves, parks and playgrounds, public toilets, tourism services, economic development, emergency management, disaster recovery, aged and disability services, community grants and more. In fact, to get a good overview of Council, its services and facilities, I encourage you to read Loddon Shire s 2017/18 Annual Report, which is available now from or at Council s Wedderburn and Serpentine offices. 10 Page 10 Volume 33 Issue 37 THE WELCOME RECORD 3rd October 2018 Central Goldfields Historic Machinery Society Last Saturday and Sunday we conducted our 13th annual tractor and small engine rally at the old racecourse and horse activity club site on Dunolly Timor Rd. About 40 tractors from 20hp - 200hp turned up, over 15 large trucks and many small engines. The day started with tractor entries and last minute trials and demos, so everything was all set for next day. Local C. F. A. served up a 3-course meal at evening, and after dark with newly-installed overhead lighting, the Bull Dog Tractors lined up, great spectacle with many shooting fire and smoke up into the night sky with the noise of them clearly heard in the streets of Dunolly. Sunday morning commenced with tractor pull proper, with tractors pulling the loaded sled over a 100m course, also during the day a 1943 reaper & binder was put into a standing oat crop near the pull track. This machine and a 1954 Fordson Tractor performed like clockwork cutting and binding between sheaves. Many people took pictures of this rare event, and it was estimated that it is over 30 years since sheaf hay was cut on this property before. Prizes were allotted to all classes of tractors and also best presented truck and best presented small engine. Over 20 caravans camped over the weekend and everyone seemed to enjoy the great weather and attractions provided. Look forward to more next year. Martin Saul, President C G H M S Dunolly District Hospital Auxiliary President s Report st October 2018 I am pleased to present a brief report on behalf of the Dunolly District Hospital Auxiliary to review our activities over the last twelve months and to indicate our priorities for future work. Our major project for 2018 has turned out to be to initiate a proposal to construct a number of Independent Living Units on the vacant land behind the medical clinic. We saw this election year to be a timely opportunity to assess the feasibility of such a proposal. The support and endorsement of the MDHS has been wonderful and enabled an experienced consultant in the field of community health and housing, Christine Nunn from Project Partnerships, to prepare a detailed Feasibility Report between March and August. The extensive community consultation and survey provided valuable, supportive material that echoes the data from the ABS and indicates that many older people in this district are experiencing housing challenges and housing-related health challenges. This situation is anticipated to worsen in the future as our ageing population grows. The Auxiliary has formed a Steering Committee, chaired by Kate Ashton, and including Barry Taylor (Police), Cameron Olsen (Finance, MDHS), three Auxiliary members, plus active support from the Dunolly Medical Practice, Maldon Community Bank and two major social housing providers. Our next step is to find the funds and an appropriate consultant to prepare the very important Implementation and Business Plan. We have submitted for a small community grant from FRRR and have an appointment with Regional Development Victoria in Bendigo about their grants for The garden renovation project is on hold again because the Auxiliary is concerned that the initial investment in ground works and plantings may not be adequately sustained by MDHS to see it through to maturity. The basic problem is that the maintenance allocation to the Dunolly Campus is inadequate to enable the worker realistically to attend to any gardening beyond mowing. In addition, anyone employed for gardening work should have appropriate skills and experience and Troy is really fully committed with building maintenance. Leigh Robertson, the gardener in Maryborough, is supportive of any attempts to improve the grounds at Dunolly, but he is fully committed in Maryborough. He has agreed to discuss the manpower problem with Darryl Stewart, his manager. My concerns about maintenance of new work is illustrated by the poor health of the trees planted two years ago: they are not weeded and mulched and one of the irrigation taps is broken and looks as if that has been the case for some time. Consequently, many trees have died. The campus is fortunate to have a wonderful volunteer who cares for the residents enclosed garden, but major work is required for the large front area, the courtyard at the PAG room, the small courtyard outside a resident s room and the large area at the back of the buildings. The auxiliary was delighted to award a nursing scholarship in to Gabby Walker and we hope this year has gone well for her. The scholarship for is now open and applications are to be received within the next two weeks to enable a presentation to be made at an earlier-than-usual MDHS AGM at the end of October. We have been a little disappointed about how the Encouragement Award has been granted over the last couple of years, as some misunderstanding seems to have developed that this award is for a child completing primary school, rather than for a child at any year level. We have formalised the guidelines and shared them with the school, so we anticipate the Encouragement Award will be back on track this year. We know it makes a wonderful difference to the recipient. Our tradition of providing presents for residents at Christmas, Easter and Mother s Day continues and we like to offer personal items the residents can enjoy. We appreciate the thought given to these gifts by the staff. Hats and scarves were popular purchases during the last twelve months. The Auxiliary also purchased a folding bed so a family member can stay with a resident or patient in more comfort in their room. Auxiliary members were introduced to the impressive education centre in Maryborough and hosted a community discussion about the new My Health Record. Auxiliary members also volunteered at another bumper Rheola Easter Carnival, and once again, over $10,000 was donated to the Dunolly Campus. A generous donation of $500 from the Dunolly Bowls Club to the Auxiliary was gratefully received and has contributed to our work during the year. The auxiliary appreciates the monthly updates of what is happening at the Dunolly Campus and is always keen to hear of any ways in which we can assist to make improvements for the comfort and amenity of residents. We are always impressed by the professionalism and personal commitment of Dunolly staff to their work and how they put the interests of residents first at all times. The auxiliary is happy to support staff initiatives to improve the quality of the residents living room. Their objective to make the room less institutional is applauded. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the goodwill and good spirits of my Auxiliary colleagues who all donate their time and efforts to the fine tradition of practically and financially supporting the Dunolly District Hospital. In addition to the continuing commitments of Rosemary Mecredy [Secretary] and Trina Kay [Treasurer], Joyce Vater is Assistant Secretary and Faye Nicholson is Vice-President. Barbara Coupland is also a committee member. We welcomed two new Auxiliary members during the year: Marion Da Costa and Cheryl Walker. Unfortunately, Cheryl has recently decided to resign as the reality of another commitment was proving too difficult to juggle. Together we make a strong team and we continue to welcome the interest and involvement of new members. The Auxiliary appreciates the regular updates from Donna Bell and Jenny Mustey that really inform us about activities and developments in the campus and guide us in terms of our contributions. Our town and the surrounding district are certainly fortunate to have such a high quality, personalised and caring service for our residential aged care residents. The introduction of a Montessori model of care has transformed many elements of life for residents. We thank all staff for making the Dunolly and District Hospital such a special environment for patients and residents. We look forward to working together over the next year. Fiona Lindsay

Lesley Whiley GROVER, John Loving Husband of Geri. John passed away Monday 1 st October, 2018 aged 87 years. John lived an amazing life, leaving his wife Geri, family and countless friends, many wonderful memories. Geri and John had many trips around Australia and overseas together, making friends along the way, friends with whom they are still in contact with. They went to markets, like Talbot markets, where Geri sold her creative flower art-work. John was always supportive of her work and helped out logistically e.g. setting up the trading table and wares. John was also a great community man. He was a policeman stationed in Tarnagulla for three years. From his experiences of being in the police, John had a chance to offer many skills to the community groups he was involved in The Scouting Association, where he took groups of scouts overseas, amongst other activities. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; Probus in Dunolly and Lions in Dunolly, Victoria. He was a willing volunteer at the Lions Bookshop in Dunolly. John was a straight shooter, meaning that, John called things as he saw them. He was like a grizzly bear with a soft, tender heart. His eyes would light up, and with a mischievous grin, he would make a remark, that taken seriously would have been upsetting. That was not how he meant it, though, as he would clearly be stirring the pot. He was a joy to be around and he was always helpful and challenging. John will be missed, especially by Geri, as she has devoted the last two years ensuring his health was the best it could be. John had two strokes, and on top of his heart trouble, fought on with determination to keep well and be happy. He went down-hill rapidly over the last three weeks and was blessed by a peaceful death. Many thanks to the kind staff at the Dunolly Nursing Home and to Dr. Rauf Soomro. You meant a lot in our life. Thank you for being genuine through your entire life. Goodbye John. ARNOLD, Edna Dorothy - 23/6/ /9/2018 Daughter of Albert Henry and Ethel Mary Bramley, (both dec'd) of Arnold. Wife of Keith, dec'd, adored mother of Kenneth, Lynette (dec'd), Peter and Maureen, mother-inlaw of Jean, Kenny, Ruth and Victor, grandmother of 3 and gg of 5. Stepsister to George, Margaret and Neil. Buried in Tarnagulla 4th October, Edna was a keen supporter of Tarnagulla and the surrounding areas, was the author of Arnold's Bridge, A Crossing Place and co-author of Tarnagulla & District.. Edna helped a lot of families with research work and was a keen supporter of the boys who went to the two great wars. She took the good with the bad and made every post a winner. A life well lived. Ken Arnold NEALE, Peter It is with sadness that we heard of the passing of Peter He was a founding member of the Dunolly Neighbourhood Centre s Golden Triangle Archers. In fact, it was Peter s suggestion that we hold an annual 2- day Trad shoot way back in 2006 and we haven t looked back since. Our thoughts are with Jenny and Peter s family at this sad time. Contact Junior Development Coordinator, Greg Crumpton on , or the coach, Dave Sumarni on or the secretary, Marion Da Costa on Marion Da Costa Last Saturday saw the final day's play for the year. Up for grabs were the Matchplay championship finals for The winner of the June Lovel Matchplay Trophy was Jenny Lovel, who prevailed over Shenae Hunt in the final. Congratulations to Jenny, who enjoyed a fine season this year. The winner of the Brian Watts Matchplay Trophy was Ian Arnold, who won in a great tussle against the evergreen Ken Brereton. The match was not decided until the 22nd hole, after which both players were in dire need of the bar facilities at the club, mainly due to the rather warm conditions. There are no further scheduled competitions for the year, but the course will remain open for another few weeks for those who would like to have a hit. The course has dried out incredibly over the past month, and is as dry as anyone can remember for this time of year - we need the rain badly!!! Dunolly Golf Club has had another successful year, and thanks are due to all those who put in the hard work to keep the club running smoothly. We are always on the lookout for new and returning members, so if you are keen to be involved in 2019, you will be made most welcome. Ian & Faye Arnold
