3 Great Days Out by Metro The Tyne and Wear Metro is a light rail system covering NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. Carrying over 40 million passenger journeys every year through 60 stations, the service has been rated as one of the country s most efficient modes of transport. You ll find stations at the heart of both NewcastleGateshead and Sunderland city centres, national railway stations and at Newcastle International airport so getting around couldn t be easier. Whatever your travel needs, you ll find a Metro ticket to suit you. Get unlimited travel all day with a Metro DaySaver or hop between stations inside a single zone with a Metro Hopper. Tickets are available from any ticket machine at all Metro stations. Several of the attractions within Great Days Out are offering Metro passengers discounted entry rates with a valid Metro ticket or pass. So, look out for the special offer symbol to help you save on your day out. Great Days Out by bus An excellent network of bus services covers all of Tyne & Wear, getting you from A to B and linking up with all other public transport. For each destination and attraction, we ve listed the best bus services to get you there. If your chosen destination states in the bus section, this means there are too many bus services to list in this guide. This will probably be because the attraction is in or near a town or city centre, when the best bus for you will depend on where you re travelling from. Further information can be found at Most bus operators will offer you single, return and day tickets on their particular services. If you re using the Metro as well as a bus, buy a Transfare ticket. For a full day travelling on Metro and bus, save money with a Day Rover. You can reach most of the major attractions in NewcastleGateshead on the QuayLink buses. These ultra low emission electric vehicles, which are highly visible in their bright yellow colours, run frequently around NewcastleGateshead from early to late, seven days a week. Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens Sunderland In AD 122, the Emperor Hadrian ordered a mighty frontier system to be built across Britain to defend the Roman Empire from the barbarians to the north. Segedunum Roman Fort stood on the banks of the River Tyne and was the last outpost of Hadrian's Wall. For almost 300 years, Segedunum, which means strong fort, was home to 600 Roman soldiers. Today, Segedunum is once again the gateway to this world-famous heritage site. See stunning views of the excavated fort, reconstructed bathhouse and the surrounding area from the top of the spectacular 35 metre viewing tower. Explore the museum and trace the history of the site from the end of Roman rule to the arrival of the coal miners and the building of the shipyards. Angel of the North 21, 22, 28, 77, 184 One of the most visible symbols of North East pride, the celebrated Angel, built from 200 tonnes of steel was created by Antony Gormley OBE. Bessie Surtees House Central Station These two five-storey 16th and 17th Century merchants houses are fine examples of Jacobean domestic architecture. Blackfriars Central Station Central Station This former monastery, dating from the 13th Century and later used as a meeting place for the city s craft guilds, has now been renovated and is home to craft shops, an award-winning restaurant and a large grassed courtyard. Chinatown Quayside Central Station Central Station The Black Gate is the impressive medieval gatehouse to the Castle Keep, surmounted by a 17th Century house. External viewing only. Castle Keep Central Station Central Station Originally a wooden fort built by the son of William the Conqueror, it gave the city its name New Castle. Fulwell Windmill Seaburn See the North East s only working windmill in operation and discover the history of the mill at the purpose-built visitor centre. Gateshead Millennium Bridge Gateshead Gateshead Millennium Bridge no disabled access in the mill itself, a virtual interactive tour is available in the visitor centre 1 ] Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a spectacular addition to the famous roll-call of bridges across the River Tyne. The bridge pivots upwards to allow ships under. Not another tilting bridge like it in the world! Tel: Gateshead Quays, South Shore Road, Gateshead, NE8 3BA Grey s Monument Monument Theatre Royal Buildings and monuments Collingwood Monument looks out over the mouth of the River Tyne and is a memorial to Lord Collingwood who took command of the British Navy following the death of Nelson at Trafalgar. The monument is a Grade II Listed Building. Pier Road, Tynemouth. Erected in 1838 to commemorate the Reform Act of 1832, drafted during Earl Grey s time as Prime Minister. This paved the way for the modern Parliament in the UK. You can take a closer view of Earl Grey without climbing to the top; a hologram effect likeness of his head is set into four points on the base as part of a creative lighting strategy for Grainger Town. External viewing only. Grey Street, Newcastle 39. Penshaw Monument One of the North East s most prominent landmarks, modelled on the Thesion, the Temple of Theseus in Athens. St Mary s Lighthouse Whitley Bay 308, 309 Climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views. The surrounding nature reserve contains an area of rock pools, cliff top grassland, a beach and a wetland habitat. Please check for opening times. Washington Old Hall Bede 27, 27A Originally built in AD , its chancel survives intact. It has the oldest dated dedication stone of any church in England and was one-half of the twin monastery of Wearmouth- Jarrow, home to St Bede the Venerable.
