4 Ashbourne antiques g in a fine Georgian mark Explore the hidden alleys and cobbled marketplace of Ashbourne, a vibrant market town with a wealth of historic buildings and high quality shops. With elegant buildings of mellow brick, Church Street is regarded as one of the finest Georgian streetscenes in Derbyshire. Stroll down the main street past historic almshouses and a former Elizabethan grammar school to the lovely parish church of St Oswald with its graceful 212ft spire. The Mall a small area with a number of interesting independent shops CLAY CROSS The town that George Stephenson built Although records of Clay Cross stretch back as far as 1538, it was not until George Stephenson discovered a seam of coal and iron while digging a railway tunnel, and decided to form what became the Clay Cross Company, that the town really began to grow. Many of the buildings within the town are from this period, when the company built houses and civic buildings for its employees. The town is home to a number of independent shops and also has several restaurants and cafés. St John the Baptist Church DRONFIELD Home of the world s oldest football team The town has been in existence since before the Domesday Book of 1086AD, and has an extensive industrial heritage.
