2 What is this thing called Geocaching? Geocaching ( jee-o-cash-ing ) is a fun, family sport that has been enjoyed for 15 years now. If you like breaking codes, deciphering clues, and looking for buried treasure, this sport is for you! Here s a short you tube clip to explain the activity for those who don t know about it. Geocaching At-a-Glance What is geocaching? Geocaching is an outdoor adventure where players use a free mobile app or a GPS device to find cleverly hidden containers around the world. How many people geocache? There are approximately 3 million active geocachers worldwide, with more than 830,000 in the U.S., more than 375,000 in Germany, and 160,000 in the United Kingdom. In New Zealand, has over 10,000 registered geocachers. How many geocaches are hidden? More than 3 million geocaches are waiting to be found in over 180 countries. New Zealand has approximately 25,000 caches. Why do people geocache? People geocache because it s a way to explore the world around them with friends and family and because it s fun. Geocaching is a game that reveals a world beyond

3 the everyday, where the possibility of a new discovery hides under park benches, in the forest and probably a short walk from where you are right now (literally). The benefits to you Connect with current and new customers New Zealand Geocaching mega events aim to attract a minimum of 500 cachers to the area and most bring family and friends with them. The Wellington event is recognising the cachers like to get out and about to explore the region so the programmes focus is celebrating the best of the Wellington region and we d like to team up with companies to share Wellington s little gems. The programme has been designed to incorporate the seminars in the afternoon and early evening so attendees can enjoy caching adventures around the city during the day. The Wellington community of cachers encompasses diverse interests so visiting and local attendees can explore: trails including natural history such as the Rimutaka Incline area, visit filming locations from the LOTR and Hobbit films; or experience local farmers and craft markets. The Wellington Geocaching community would like to offer you this opportunity to partner with us for this event so you can share the story of your business and gain new customers. Partnering with us opens you and your staff to a whole new world of adventure through geocaching. Cache In Trash Out Cache In Trash Out (CITO) events are run throughout the year, they are an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Over the period of the two-day event, we intend to run a CITO and would be happy to work with the local Department of Conservation, Regional and Local Councils to plan a CITO as part of the programme. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 240,000 people have volunteered at 11,000 CITO events. CITOs have been run in the greater Wellington Region within community reserves such as Pauatahnui Inlet and Mana Island.

4 These events involve picking up litter, cleaning up communal areas, planting trees, or pest and weed eradication. We d be interested in talking with you about what are the best options over the 2018 Labour Weekend period. Social Media The Wellington Geocaching Event has been planned since October 2016, over that period promotion has been included in the International Geocaching Blog sessions, through our Facebook website, Geocaching.com and our own the dedicated website and smaller events and flyers run throughout New Zealand and Australia. The WENZ2018 already has 401 cachers who have posted Will Attend as of early 2018, and the community continues to reach out across New Zealand and overseas to promote the event. Our Facebook site has a membership base of 234 a year out from the event and the committee actively connects with the local and wider community for promotion and seeking ideas to make the WENZ2018 a very successful event. WENZ Showcasing the Wellington Region Wellington is a compact yet vibrant city with a reputation for strong winds. WENZ2018 provides the opportunity to show Geocachers and their friends and family another side of Wellington over and above the 3000 active caches across the region including one of the oldest active caches in the WORLD! Wellington is New Zealand s capital city and as such has some historic and modern architectural buildings within the Government Precinct and Ministerial buildings. As the capital it also is home to a large number of overseas embassies and high commissions which adds a great cultural diversity to the four cities making up the region. Wellington City is home of the only remaining New Zealand Funicular, a cable car has been operating on this line since The Wellington Region is regarded as the Earthquake Capital and this has had a strong influence of architecture and regional planning. There are a number of areas of natural history as a result of earthquakes that have occurred and design features to mitigate future risks. Visitors can easily explore these areas and for those geocaching fans there are often associated Earthcaches.

5 In New Zealand, it is considered the Coffee Capital, with cafes on most corners of the cities and many local roasters. More recently there has been a significant increase in craft brewers and the region hosts an annual Beervana festival in August. Several the microbreweries across the region have their own outlets and other bars rotate craft beers so fans can taste a range of options. The final tine of the regions offering is culinary delights, from cafes and wineries to a vibrant manufacturing industry the Wellington region provides culinary delights across New Zealand and the World. Visitors to the region can explore, taste and enjoy some of these delights and regional businesses have an opportunity through WENZ2018 to showcase their products. WENZ2018 would love to discuss how we could best work with each other to show off Wellington s Regional delights. There is a lot that makes the Wellington region a special place and we want to work with you to show visitors to Wellington that there s a lot more to this city than some pretty cool caches. Tell us how we can work best together. The event is being held in the function room of the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club with ample room for company partners to have promotional space and if interested options for actual or online sales activity and promotion of your business.
