1 New South Wales Secondary Deputy Principals Association Inc. Website: Newsletter: Term 3/2014 Issued: 21 st July 2014 THE NSW SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPALS ASSOCIATION IS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY: PRESIDENT S REPORT In the month before our State Conference, there are many developments occurring in our association. In terms of advocacy, our executive has had meetings with the Minister, who has sought our opinion on management of behaviour. This has been a welcome development for our association, and I hope that this continues. I also have been in closer contact with the SPC, which has led to more involvement in advocating for Deputy Principals through this body. The fact that the conference is closed due to the enormous response in registration shows what an excellent product has been developed by conference teams over the years. I thank these teams for the provision of outstanding professional learning as well as a memorable experience for our association members as a close and proactive network. The development of our two new awards add opportunity for individuals to further their work in schools. In addition to the Academy Fellowship, the Evelyn Hazzard Foundation awards and grants will be advertised this evening. These are incredible opportunities to learn and grow. Contributions from our corporate partner and the family of Evelyn Hazzard need to be honored. I look forward to reading submitted applications from individual members who will further their learning with the financial support on offer. I have extended the date to August 1 in order for applications to be considered and submitted. (NB: application forms are attached to this ). At State Conference there will be a new corporate partner announced with the Teachers Mutual Bank coming on board to support Deputy Principals when in crisis, to support rural and remote Deputy Principals, and to assist our Welfare Officer in his work. This is a really exciting opportunity for our association, and I look forward to making this relationship official at Wollongong. Also, there have been strong developments in our Website, which should be announced at Conference so one to watch for us all.
2 I look forward to seeing familiar faces at Conference. Every time I attend conference I am reminded of how worthwhile and supportive our Deputy Principal colleagues are. It really is an association of tremendous collegiality and professionalism, and I am absolutely proud to be a part of it. Jenny Parrett President VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT - DP Welfare The end of second term is perhaps the most difficult few weeks of the year given the nature of the reporting season. I hope that all of you had a great break and that you are looking forward to the 2014 State Conference in 6 weeks time. The Illawarra South East organising committee are excited about the conference they have put together. One keynote and a number of workshops specifically target well-being issues identified in the most recent DP Welfare Survey and, of course, the networking and socialising opportunities afforded by the conference provide that annual recharge of the batteries so valued by all of us. Of particular interest for many is likely to be the financial management workshop to be presented by Steve Barnett as this area was identified as the one causing most concern to DP s, while the keynote by Jono Nicholas (CEO of the Inspire Foundation) and workshop by Sarah Jackson (who manages Reachout.com for the Inspire Foundation) directly address student well-being issues. Paul Hurley, presenter of the mindfulness workshop mentioned in the newsletter, has significantly revised and updated his presentation to focus specifically on staff and DP welfare. While the workshop retains an overview of the proactive student program enacted at his school, Paul is passionate and excited about his new workshop and the benefits mindfulness practice can bring for teaching and executive staff. Most of the other workshops provide at least some practical information and strategies that will assist DP s in their day-to-day work and, therefore, enhance their overall well-being. It is particularly pleasing that a significant number of the workshops will be presented by current and former DP s from the ISER region. The upcoming state conference will be the last for Barry Lovegrove, our highly respected Welfare Officer, as he is retiring from the position he has filled so admirably. Many of our members have benefitted from his wise counsel, empathetic support and advocacy on their behalf. Steve Barnett, who is retiring from teaching at the end of the year, will take over from Barry. They are big shoes to fill. If you get a chance at Conference say thanks to Barry. Thanks Barry. Ian Walker Vice President (Welfare)
3 WELFARE OFFICER S REPORT Welcome back for the winter term of Here s hoping the holidays enabled you to demonstrate to yourself that you still possess all the sporting and cultural skills you developed in your younger years. On the 24 th June, Scott Leavers and I attended a very moving memorial service for the late Anthony Fazzolari, former Deputy Principal at Davidson High School. It was conducted in the School Auditorium and the high esteem in which Anthony was held was obvious by the tributes and the large number of colleagues and students in attendance. A sad loss indeed. During the last week of Term 2, St Clare High School in Western Sydney was largely destroyed by a devastating fire in the early hours of the morning. I have been in touch with Sally Smithard, Deputy Principal, whom with the Principal and many members of the executive and staff have spent much of their holidays overseeing the locating of more than 30 demountables, in order to be ready for the commencement of Term 3.Spare a thought for them as they manage a very difficult task for the start of week 1. I will be taking leave from August 1st 25 th as my wife and I spend time visiting our son and his family overseas. Stephen Barnett will be taking my place during this period and his contact details are: School: Mobile: Stephen.j.barnett@det.nsw.edu.au I will be available at all other times for contact on any issue at all. My contact details are: Phone: Mobile: barry.lovegrove1@det.nsw.edu.au OR bjlove@zeta.org.au Barry Lovegrove Welfare Officer
