2 AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NSW DIVISION members Newsletter Railway luncheon Club F eastwood rom as far afield as Canberra, Junee, Newcastle and of course Sydney, over 40 members and friends came to Eastwood on Wed 15 August to see what this busy station has to offer those with an interest in railway history. Originally called Dundas, Eastwood was opened as a small standard timber roadside station on 17 September 1886, concurrent with the opening of the railway between Strathfield and Hornsby. The station name was changed to Eastwood on 1 September 1887, taking this name from the nearby property Eastwood House, built in 1840 by William Rutledge. This property was acquired by Edward Terry in 1863 and the house remains as part of Marist Brothers School. Both Rutledge s and Terry s names are perpetuated in Rutledge Street with its railway overbridge and Terrys Creek running under the lines at the station. Led by our three guides, the group saw the platform faces showing a mixture of styles and construction periods, the sites of the various buildings, including the overhead booking office, track changes over the years, former railway residences and the details of three nearby accidents. Eastwood s Platform 3 looking south. A V Set has stopped in Platform 1. Image: Ray Pickard Looking north along Eastwood s Platform 3 as Waratah Set A8 departs. Image: Ray Pickard The newer, and non-standard, platform awnings built in 2009 have obliterated all traces of the former buildings. Our thanks go to Ian Wallace and Stephen Halgren for their assistance, and to others in the group who had some special association with Eastwood. A special thanks also to the acting SM Chris, who not only welcomed the group to her station, but accompanied us for the entire tour the first time a Railcorp officer has done so. On completion of the tour, we adjourned to the adjacent art-deco Eastwood Hotel for lunch. The next Luncheon Club outing is to Otford on Wednesday 19 September Catch the 9.03am Dapto intercity service from Central, which is due at Otford at 10.07am. After completion of the tour, catch the 11.16am train from Otford to Sutherland for lunch at the Royal Hotel. This outing will be led by John Oakes. The notes for Otford are now available on the ARHSnsw website. On 17 October, Nev Pollard will be showing us Emu Plains, and in November we will be going to the Gosford Electrical Depot. Gary Hughes our second-hand book sale is now held every month on the 1st Saturday & 1st tuesday ( Next on Saturday 1 September 10am to 3pm & Tuesday 4 September 12pm to 3pm) redfern Australian & Overseas Books from $1 to $999! 3 AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NSW DIVISION members Newsletter AUGUST Members meeting Guest Speaker Our guest speaker was once again Ed Tonks who is well known in railway circles as a book author, speaker and tour guide. Ed bought along his 35mm slides of the closed Adamstown to Belmont line. His book Adamstown via Fernleigh was published by the NSWRTM in 1988 and is now out of print and much sought after. He is looking to republish his book, this time including the last train workings and the line and infrastructure at closure. Following the closure of Lambton Colliery at Redhead, the last operating pit in the area in late 1991, the Belmont line was closed from 19 December However, passenger services ceased completely on 8 April From August 1965, 48 Class diesel locomotives took over from the steam engines on the coal trains, however there were brief periods when steam returned because of a shortage of diesel motive power. Later, 47 Class diesels worked the line and were the preferred power over the 48 Class as the later had a propensity to derail on a particular section of the line. Ed s slides included these workings and he was able to photograph the very last trains to run including some unusual combinations bought about by locomotive failures. Although 44 and 45 Class were authorised to work the line, images of them working are rare but Ed managed to photograph a 45 Class! The new edition will feature additional images including some of the slides shown at the meeting. Ed s new edition will complete the coverage of the Belmont line s history. We look forward to seeing the book when it is published. George Gettens thanked Ed for yet another thoroughly entertaining lecture. There are two aspects for which we seek the help of members. Scanner Work at Redfern using a flat-bed scanner. Some basic computer skill necessary together with experience with either scanning or photo-copying. Attendance for 4+ hours at least once a week is desirable. Indexing This can be carried out in member s home using his/her PC. Apart from basic computer skill, some understanding of HTML coding would be an advantage, but training from basic word-processing knowledge will be provided. Completed files will need to be brought to the ARHS and the next project collected. applications to: glillico@arhsnsw.com.au FOR REDFERN DATABASES Volunteer(s) with computer programming skills Our NSW President George Gettens would like to meet a volunteer with computer programming skills that could provide backup for the work he does. We have a number of purpose designed programs for searching our photo database, maintaining certain financial records, subscription information and general RRC processing. We use Microsoft Access with VBA code behind it, but any member with general programming experience would quickly catch onto what we do. Please phone and ask for Ross or Grahame at Redfern if you are willing to help George maintain and develop the software used at Redfern. applications to: rossverdi@arhsnsw.com.au AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NSW DIVISION FOR ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN RAILWAYS Page 3
4 AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NSW DIVISION A PASSENGER TRAIN to KANDOS & Celebrate 50 year-old 4501 A Saturday 20 October 2012 ccredited NSW heritage groups 3801 Limited, ARHSnsw Division, ARHS ACT Division and The Rail Motor Society have been given the opportunity by John Holland (with the company s offer) to open the line from Charbon to Kandos to run another train to Kandos Station on Saturday 20 October Following the closure of the Kandos Cement works, the line from Charbon Loop to Kandos was closed for traffic. Additionally, 4501 celebrated 50 years of service on 2 June 2012 and we have the opportunity to celebrate this milestone with Alco Diesel Electric locomotive 4501 attached to 4833 and a 44 Class to haul the special heritage train. Come and join us for this nostalgic trip to Kandos on the truncated Mudgee line. The all-alco diesel-hauled heritage train departs Sydney around 7.30am. Our carriage will be an XFS compartment car allowing wide-open windows. Morning tea is included as you enjoy and admire the scenery as the train surmounts the Blue Mountains. At Wallerawang, we take the branch line onwards through the magnificent Capertee Valley where a photo stop at Brogans Creek will be made to admire and take in the local environment. Following our arrival, expected around 1.00pm, lunch will be provided at a local Kandos establishment and is included with the ticket payment. Other places like the Kandos Museum is just one attraction to check out during our visit to this quaint little town. The train will pick up at Strathfield, Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith. The return journey is expected to conclude at Sydney at 8.30pm.
