In-fact Great Southern Rail, who operate long distance passenger trains across Australia; have some of the world s iconic services. In this tour have combined the best of rail travel with some Capital City sightseeing. First we travel in Red Premium Class seats to Melbourne on the Overland. Between Melbourne and Sydney we travel on the high speed XPT train. The term XPT is short for "express passenger train." Its aerodynamic design and trademark "nose" make a distinctive impression as it cruises through the countryside. After exploring Sydney our rail experience comes to a climax with our Gold Kangaroo Class accommodation on the Indian Pacific as we travel back to Adelaide. Itinerary Details Day 1(D): The Overland (Friday 14 October, 2016) We have an early start this morning as we make our way to Adelaide Interstate Rail Terminal at Keswick for the 7.45am departure of the Overland to Melbourne. The Overland is one of Australia s best known trains which began life as the Intercolonial Express in October 1887 when the Victorian and South Australian rail lines were joined at the state border. The train became known as The Overland in We enjoy an all day ride with fresh fare available from Cafe 828, the train's licensed restaurant car. On arrival into Melbourne s Southern Cross Station at 6.50pm we will be met by our Victor Tours Touring Coach for the transfer to our accommodation. 2 Day 2 (BLD): Exploring Melbourne (Sat 15 October) After breakfast we explore Melbourne a city of four million people. Independent researchers say its one of the best places in the world to live. And one of the best places on earth to visit! The city centre is located at the top of Port Phillip Bay - one of the world s great natural harbours. Melbourne really is a grand place! Within the parks and gardens around the city centre are many gracious buildings such as Government House, the Old Treasury Building and the Exhibition Building, built for the Great Exhibition of Our first stop is at the Fitzroy Gardens in East Melbourne. These gardens, designed in 1857 by Latrobe Bateman, were created using the Union Jack as a pattern! We then head over to nearby Hawthorn to visit the Melbourne Tram Museum to encounter a part of the history of Melbourne at a unique heritage location. The museum is home to 21 fully-restored trams including a toast-rack bodied V-class from 1906 one of the first electrified trams in Melbourne. There are several versions of the iconic Melbourne W-class trams and the experimental X-class tram designed for lightly patronised routes. The prototype of the Z-class which marked the steady modernisation of the fleet when it was introduced in 1975 is also on display. This afternoon we have planned a visit to the Melbourne Museum. Located next door to the famous Royal Exhibition Building, the $300 million Melbourne Museum is spread over six levels and features collections on everything from Australian society to science and technology, to the human mind and body. There is a Forest Gallery, Mind and Body Gallery, Banjilaka (the Aboriginal Centre) and the Australian Gallery featuring Phar Lap. We enjoy a light lunch in the museum café before heading over to Southbank for some free time to shop or visit Crown Casino. Late afternoon we return to the hotel to relax before dinner. (Breakfast & dinner in the hotel/light lunch at the Melbourne Museum) Quality Hotel Downtowner Carlton Day 3 (BD): The XPT to Sydney (Sun 16 October) This morning we transfer to Southern Cross Station to connect with the daily northbound XPT Service to Sydney departing at 8.30am. The XPT power car features a Paxman VP cylinder, turbo-charged diesel electric engine boasting 1492 kw or 2000 horsepower. There's a power car

3 at each end of the train, one pulling and the other pushing. The XPT has undergone refurbishment with new seat covers, carpets, curtains and toilets. In addition, a striking new livery has been applied. It will be another full day to relax and enjoy the scenery and the on board facilities. On arrival at Sydney s Central Station early evening we are transferred to our city accommodation. (Breakfast & dinner in the motel/lunch own arrangements & cost on the XPT) Day 4 (BD): Exploring Sydney (Mon 17 October) This morning we have arranged a guided tour to the historic Cockatoo Island in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Here we will discover the rich history of Sydney's largest island, from convict prison to the centre of a thriving shipbuilding industry. We will also find out how the Harbour Trust is preparing a plan for the future of this remarkable place. It is over 20 years since the vast array of facilities and spaces have been used: immense industrial workshops, clusters of courtyards, a prison barracks precinct, underground grain silos. The sandstone knoll that is Cockatoo Island has undergone extensive cutting and filling to create distinct upper and lower levels. A variety of woodland vegetation and shrubs would have once covered the rocky knoll, and almost all have been removed. Today, some ferns, mosses and hardy shrubs grow between layers of rock on the cliff faces. There are large Moreton Bay Figs and Camphor Laurel trees on the northern side of the island. The island has a nesting ground for seagulls and fig trees provide a food source for bats. Our tour departs from Darling Harbour and the ferry trip takes about 10 minutes and the tour on the island lasts for 2 hours. (Please note: most of the 2 hour tour is spent walking around the island, including one very steep incline.)

4 After our tour we return to Darling Harbour and free time for lunch (own expense), before our afternoon visit to Madame Tussauds. Millions and millions of people have flocked through the doors of the original Madame Tussauds since it first opened over 250 years ago and now it is Sydney s turn. Travel on a unique, emotionally-charged journey through the realms of the powerful and famous. The museum-style ropes and poles have gone so we can truly get up, close and personal with A-list celebrities, sporting legends, political heavyweights and historical icons, reliving the times, events and moments that made the world talk about them. (Breakfast & dinner in the hotel/lunch own cost in Darling Harbour) Day 5 (BD): More of Sydney (Tue 18 October) We have a treat in store this morning as we visit Vaucluse House. This historic house survives as one of Sydney's only 19th century harbour side estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings and is still surrounded by ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds. Built in 1803 it was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, father of the Australian Constitution, his wife Sarah and their immediate family of 10 children who lived in the house from and again in The gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining rooms and functional 'downstairs' areas. On completion of our visit we make our way to Bondi Beach for some free time to take a look around and purchase some lunch. (Passengers own expense) T his afternoon we are off to the Sydney Tramway Museum which began life in From 1957 the Museum operated from a large corrugated iron shed alongside what is now today the Parklink tramline. In 1988, the Museum moved to its current premises next to Loftus railway station. Today we will enjoy a 30 minute tram ride, a guided tour to learn about the evolution of Sydney Trams and afternoon tea. To this day, the Museum remains a non-profit community organisation run entirely by volunteers. We then head back to the hotel to get ready for our early sunset dinner aboard the MV Sydney cruising on the wonderful Sydney Harbour. From the water, the city skyline is simply magnificent! 5 Day 6 (BD): The Indian Pacific to Adelaide (Wed 19 Oct) After a free morning to enjoy the Darling Harbour area and catch up on some shopping or personal sightseeing, we transfer early afternoon to Central Station in readiness for our 24 hour journey on the Indian Pacific to Adelaide. This is a journey defined by contrasts from the towering majesty of the Blue Mountains this afternoon to the barren expanse western NSW tomorrow. (Breakfast in the hotel/lunch own arrangements & cost/dinner on the Indian Pacific) Indian Pacific Gold Kangaroo Accommodation Day 7 (BL): Back to South Australia (Thu 20 October)) We have an early morning stop in Broken Hill and arrive back at Adelaide s Interstate Rail Terminal mid-afternoon. Our Victor Tours Coach will be waiting for us for the transfer home to complete our 7-day rail tour.
