1 Australia s Premier Coal Industry Event March 10-11, 2003 Sheraton on the Park, Sydney Optional Post Conference Field Trip: March 11-13, 2003 Hunter Valley mines, ports and rail operations 10% Early bird discount - 31st December 2002 ORGANISED BY
2 AUSTRALIA S PREMIER COAL INDUSTRY EVENT Coaltrans Australia will bring to Sydney in March 2003 the industry s key producers, consumers, traders and shippers - the whole community that represents Australia s and the Asian region s coal trade. This event is the successor to the Australian Coal Association s conference which was previously run on Queensland s Gold Coast. No stopping the Australian Coal Industry Whereas 2002 has been a year of consolidation for Australian black coal production, it has also been another period of record coal exports. These have exceeded 200MT for the first time including thermal coal exports of close to 100MT. In 2003 Barlow Jonker forecast that total Australian production will reach 277MT with Queensland going from 148MT to 150MT and New South Wales from 114MT to 117MT. Essentially all the growth will be to supply coal to the export market in which Australia will remain the largest player. But markets keep changing 2002 was a year when, for quite some time, metallurgical coal prices headed north whilst thermal prices moved south a divergence that showed signs of reversal late in the year. Australia has been able to compete in most markets, helped to some extent by a low Australian dollar. But for how long will that advantage last? Will the new acceptance of transparent markets continue? And of great importance, how will the Australian coal industry deal with challenges relating to environmental issues? And what of the competition? China remains the big unknown as both an exporter and potential import market. Having grabbed markets with record exports in 2001 it consolidated in 2002 and offered new import markets for thermal coal. Indonesia has lacked the benefit of overseas investment but has still managed to grow and dominate the market for sub-bituminous coal. South Africa is considering a new regime of ownership but despite the uncertainty plans to expand further. So where does Australia stand with its miners having their own plans to develop new operations? In particular what will be the position of the new potential projects of southern Bowen and similar basins? Is the market ready for these coals with their variety of qualities? Will infrastructure constrain development? These and many other questions and topics will be discussed at Coaltrans Australia. Organised by the industry Both the event administration and the conference programme are provided by organisations whose sole business focus is the coal industry sector. The Australian Coal Association as the industry body representing Australia's black coal producers. The ACA is formed by the coal company members of the New South Wales Minerals Council and the Queensland Mining Council. A major ACA objective is promoting and facilitating the uptake of clean coal technologies in Australia. Barlow Jonker provides a unique service of expert advice to clients in the coal industry be they producers, consumers, bankers or service companies. Clients are found in Australia, China, Japan, Canada, South Africa, Indonesia, India, USA and Europe. Barlow Jonker s international network serves them round the clock with advice, consulting, analysis and the most reliable information. Coaltrans Conferences organises the world s largest coal conferences which attract large numbers of delegates from all over the world. It also runs regional events, exhibitions, field trips and training courses and has a reputation for employing the highest organisational standards. Site visit of the PWCS terminals in the Port of Newcastle hosted by PWCS. Visit to include presentation by Pacific National and viewing of the unloading operations. Depart for Sydney after lunch hosted by PWCS MINES Hunter Valley Operations Hunter Valley Operations is the largest of Coal & Allied s four coal operations in the Hunter Valley of NSW. Annual production exceeds 12 million tonnes of thermal and coking coal. A high level of employee involvement has enabled Hunter Valley Operations to consolidate five mining areas into one centrally managed operation. Like the rest of Coal & Allied, Hunter Valley Operations has a strong focus on safety and the initiatives put in place have led to a significant decline in injuries. MT ARTHUR COAL Mt Arthur Coal, incorporating the new Mount Arthur North open cut mine and the existing Bayswater #3 mine, will produce up to 15 mpta of raw energy coal when full production is achieved in A strong community consultation program involving extensive social impact analysis was developed to address concerns of the nearby community over the new mine. Delegates visiting Mt Arthur Coal will see much of the new infrastructure completed and operating. The mine produces coal for domestic and export markets. MOUNT OWEN Mt Owen mine is located in the Hunter Valley coalfields, 25km north of Singleton in New South Wales. The mine is owned by Hunter Valley Coal Corporation (HVCC), a 100% subsidary of Xstrata Coal, and operated by Thiess Pty Ltd under a partnering agreement. Mt Owen is a structurally complex deposit consisting of 28 seam sections, with dips ranging from 10 to 45 degrees. Mt Owen is one of the deepest and most geologically challenging open cut coal reserves currently being mined in Australia and potentially the world, 7 7
8 with operating depths in excess of 270m. A state-of-the-art coal handling preparation plant underpins the success of Mt Owen, which has an annual production rate of five million tonnes of high quality export thermal and semisoft coking coals. PORTS PORT KEMBLA Port Kembla Coal Terminal services the Southern and Western Coalfields of New South Wales. The ongoing success of this facility can be seen with results of average vessel turnaround of less than two days per year. Our employees are continuing to maintain high levels of customer service while improving our operational performance. Together we have achieved a 7 year strike free period. PWCS PWCS located in the Port of Newcastle, operates the world s largest export coal handling operation at two terminals, Carrington and Kooragang, with a total annual shiploading capacity of 89 million tonnes. The Stage 3 Expansion, costing AUD$330M, was recently completed ensuring PWCS has the capacity to service growth in the Hunter Valley Coal Industry. PWCS has a stable and experienced workforce that delivers reliability in its element of the supply chain from the mines to the buyer. RAILROAD PACIFIC NATIONAL Pacific National is the largest coal haulage service provider in New South Wales hauling approximately 78 million tonnes of coal per annum. The Coal division generates revenue in excess of $300 million per annum. Pacific National has approximately 3200 employees Australiawide, with approximately 460 locomotives and more than 10,600 wagons across its four business divisions, Coal, Grain, Industrial and Intermodal. Australian transport logistics companies Toll Holdings and Patrick Corporation jointly own Pacific National. The two companies formed a consortium to buy the New South Wales Government owned FreightCorp and the Federal Government owned National Rail Corporation, the privatisation of which was finalised in February UCC Energy Pty. Limited ULTRA CLEAN COAL The Ultra Clean Coal (UCC) technology and process is being developed by UCC Energy Pty Limited in co-operation with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and is supported by both the Australian Federal and State Governments. The process focuses on the treatment and utilization of coal in high efficiency electricity generation and is relevant to the environment and matters of climate change. Ultra clean coals are coals with less than 1% ash. The UCC Energy process is producing a new clean solid fuel with ash levels between 0.1% and 0.2%. The process uses alkali/acid digestion to dissolve the minerals out of the coal under moderate temperature and pressure conditions, without the loss of coal properties.
