1 Genealogy P.E.I. Passenger Lists: Part Three by Janet Dale I n our eagerness locate passenger lists, we genealogists must heed the Freudian injunction analysis, and attempt discover why we want them. We must be careful not project our modern preoccupation with record keeping upon those Old World, pre- Dickensian clerks, lacking IBM Selectrics. It is important also recall that in the New World until the late th century, immigration was on a "free entry" basis. Thus, there was an absence of the procedures which would have caused contemporaneous officialdom generate documents. That so few passenger lists are be found is not, then, the outcome of cataclysmic fires or even spring housecleanings. It would seem reasonable guess that many "lost" passenger lists never, in fact, existed. But lest we mourn o deeply the scarcity of passenger lists, let us consider the genealogical value of those presently available. Certainly, in scanning those lists, it is apparent that their information content is unevenly distributed. The Lovely Nelly list, a genealogist's delight, grouped families, named children, gave place of residence as well as port of embarkation, listed occupation, and summarized reasons for leaving Scotland. However, the lengthy lists for the Humphreys, Rambler, Spencer, and others (which appeared with that of the Lovely Nelly in earlier issues of The Island Magazine) were cursory indeed. They generally provided an age breakdown of the family members and supplied the name of only the "head of household" (an antiquated term denoting the chief male). The Jane, Lucy, Clarendon, Lively, Elizabeth, and Lovely Nelly are the only lists which offer that crucial clue the genealogist place of origin. We must conclude that the passenger list, while of great use in answering questions as "who" and "when," is hardly a cornersne of family hisry research. Careful investigation of many other resources available the genealogist can more than compensate for the lack of a passenger list In this last of three articles on passenger lists, we present the lists for the ships Lively (), Elizabeth (), Spencer (0), Elizabeth and Ann (0), Isle of Skye (0), Clarendon (0), and Lu/em. (). Lists for the Lively and the Elizabeth were contained in the British Treasury Office Registers. Copies are held by the Public Archives of Canada (MG, T ). Those for the Spencer, Elizabeth and Ann, and Isle of Skye are the Alley-Smith Collection (Accession 0) in the Public Archives of Prince Edward Island. Copies of the Clarendon list are at the Public Archives of Canada amongst the Colonial Office papers (CO, Vol. ). The Lulan list appeared in Appendix of the Journals of the House of Assembly and was drawn my attention by Nicolas dejong.
