10 Donald MacLeod from Gualtergil, Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, Boatman to the Prince Regiment: n/a Rank: n/a 2311 London Aged 68 years. Died at home during May 1749 Aged 72 years. Wife was sister of MacDonald of Borrodale and first cousin to Flora MacDonald. Was one of the most faithful of all the Prince s attendants. He was sent to the Prince at Borrodale on 21 April 1746 by Aeneas MacDonald and offered to help him to get over to the Hebrides in the hope of picking up a ship for France. He got a boat and crew and took him across and shared his adventures until 20 June 1746 when the small party had to scatter to avoid detection. On 5 July 1746 he was captured by Allan MacDonald of Knock, taken to Barra and thence to Portree and put on board Ferguson s ship, HMS Furnace, 9 August 1746, where he suffered appalling ill-treatment. He was conveyed to London on board the Jane of Leith (doubtful, that ship left Inverness on June 1746). For some months he was in the house of Mr. Dick, the Messenger. He was never tried and he himself never referred to any official examination. In the absence of sufficient evidence he was released on 10/11 June 1747 and went home. 17 John MacKenzie, Lord MacLeod from, Soldier & Landowner Regiment: Earl of Cromartie's Rank: Lieutenant Colonel 2321 Aged 19 years, eldest son of the 3rd Earl of Cromartie, born Along with his father he took part in the 45. This was not expected as the Lord President had offered him a commission as Captain in one of the Independent Companies. In 1786 married Margaret, daughter of Lord Forbes. MP for Ross-shire, Raised a body of MacKenzies in Lochbroom and Coigach and joined the Prince on the return of the army from the English campaign. He and his father, Barisdale, Glengyle and ManKinnon were sent with 1,500 men to try and recover the treasure on the Prince Charles (ex Hazard ) which had been driven ashore at Tongue on 25 March 1746 and to raise money in Sutherland and Caithness. On the list of rebels transmitted to the Commissioners of Excise in Scotland in obedience to a general letter of 7 May They were surprised and captured at Dunrobin and taken to London and a large number of their men were taken prisoners. When tried for high treason on 20 December 1746 Lord MacLeod pleaded guilty. He was pardoned on 22 January 1748 on condition that within six months of attaining his majority he should convey to the Crown all his rights in the Estates of the Earldom. This he did and went abroad and entered the Swedish service. The Old Chevalier, at the request of Lord George Murray, sent him the necessary funds for his military outfit. He become a Colonel aide-de-camp to the King of Sweden and was made Count Cromartie. The family estates were returned to him by Act of Parliament in He died 2 April John MacLeod from Tongoi, Eilean Shona, Regiment: MacDonald of Clanranald's Rank: Other Ranks Nothing more known about this man. 18 John MacLeod from Glenelg, Cook to Lady Barra in the Isle of Barra Regiment: n/a Rank: n/a 2322 Inverness 'Pamela' Aged 40 years. Imprisoned at Inverness and sent to London where he was imprisoned on board the prison hulk Pamela. Transported 31 March The Prisoners of the '45, Vol. III, Scottish History Society, 1929, pages 162 & 163 John MacLeod from, Legal profession Regiment: n/a Rank: n/a 2328 Edinburgh Tolbooth The Scots Magazine August 1745 reported that shortly after the Prince landed, John MacLeod, who had recently come over from Holland, was imprisoned on 13 August 1745 in Edinburgh Tolbooth, in suspicion. Ultimately released. This may have been the John MacLeod of Muiravonside, Stirling, Advocate and Grandson of Sir Norman MacLeod of Bernera. List of persons excepted from the General Act of Parliament, The Prisoners of the '45, Third Series, Scottish History Society, 1928, pages 297 & 298 Malcolm MacLeod of Brea from Raasay, Tracksman Regiment: MacLeod of Raasay's Rank: Captain 2332 London Captain MacLeod met the Prince at Portree on 30 June 1746 and took him to Raasay. They left on 2 July 1746 and returned to Skye and went to Strath, the Prince posing as his servant. Here they were in the house of John MacKinnon, MacLeod s Brother-in-Law. MacLeod returned to Raasay where he was taken prisoner and placed in a sloop (probably HMS Furnace ) and conveyed to London. For several months he was in one of the prison hulks moored on the River Thames. On 25 May 1747 the Privy Council decided that he should be tried in Scotland, but this was not carried out. He was ultimately released on 4 June 1747 and returned home.
