3 BATTLE OF BRITAIN TOUR / DAMBUSTERS TOUR Throughout history there have been numerous occasions where pilots and their aircraft have been the last line of defence, the vanguard of a military offensive, the only option for humanitarian aid or simply attempting to be the fastest, highest or most aerobatic. To honour those illustrious men and women, in the year of the RAF s centenary, we have created a selection of tours that will immerse you in the history of classic aviation. From the heady days of learning to fly a Tiger Moth in the thirties, through the famous airborne battles and raids of World War II to the Cold War of the sixties and seventies, there is something to enthral and entertain all enthusiasts. Your tour commences in the evening with a welcome dinner and drinks at one of aviation s most famous clubs in London. The next morning, we have a private guided tour of Bentley Priory, Fighter Command s HQ during the Battle of Britain. After lunch we move on to RAF Uxbridge and visit the original 11 Group Ops Room bunker before heading north to our overnight stay in Lincolnshire. DAY THREE Thursday. We take the opportunity to visit the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby. You will get to see the BBMF aircraft at close quarters and observe the skilled technicians keeping these historic warbirds in airworthy condition. In the afternoon there is a chance to visit a live RAF station that is home to another major Battle of Britain Sector Ops Room, which lay untouched for fifty years and is completely original. After dinner we have a special event lined up, but it s Top Secret! DAY SEVEN Monday. This will be the highlight of your Battle of Britain Tour! After a weekend of watching the flying action it s time to take part. After breakfast we head back to Duxford and ARC s hangars where you will have a truly once in a lifetime experience. Depending on your chosen tour package, either climb into the rear cockpit of an original WW II Supermarine Spitfire for a 20-minute Flight Experience or take your seat in a classic airliner to fly alongside. Whichever option you choose, it will be a day you will never forget. Twynhams Tours are the ONLY company to offer a multi-night Battle of Britain Tour that focuses purely on locations and experiences relating to the most famous air battle ever fought and include a Spitfire Flight Experience as an inclusive part of the tour. DAY FOUR Friday. An early start sees us heading for Duxford Aerodrome and the day begins with a briefing by one of the Aircraft Restoration Company's leading engineers and moves on to a guided tour of the hangars. You ll get to see where the warbirds are restored from the ground up, serviced, maintained and operated from. After a light buffet lunch, it's time for the highlight of the day, your photo opportunity sitting in the cockpit of an original WWII Supermarine Spitfire. Once your tour is complete there is ample opportunity to take a look around the IWM and as this is a live airfield, you may be able to catch all-sorts of classic aircraft practising displays, departing or arriving back at base. DAY FIVE/SIX The Weekend. On Saturday there is a choice of sightseeing and shopping in historic Cambridge or general admission to the opening day of Duxford s Battle of Britain Airshow, which brings to life this important World War II fighter station, whose finest hour was defending Great Britain from aerial attack in On Sunday we have an exclusive VIP hospitality experience, with flight-line access and our own private balcony to watch the highlights of this superb classic aviation event. DAY EIGHT Tuesday. On our last day we visit the Spitfire restoration hangars at ex-raf WWII front line airfield Biggin Hill. After a light lunch we make our way down to the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, scene of so many air battles during the Summer of At the Battle of Britain Memorial you can pay your respects to the few before enjoying a farewell drink and our group s final dinner. *Subject to weather conditions. 6 TEL TWEET twynhamsevents DAMBUSTERS TOUR Part One Take-Off June 2019 The night of 16th May 1943 was clear with a full moon, perfect conditions for the Dambusters raid, officially known as Operation Chastise. The specially modified Lancasters of 617 Squadron were despatched in three waves from RAF Scampton. Wing Commander Guy Gibson led the first wave and attacked the Möhne Dam. The bombs had to be released from precisely 60 feet, at a speed of exactly 220 m.p.h. His Upkeep bomb detonated successfully but failed to breach the dam. After two further abortive attacks the dam was finally breached by Squadron Leader Young's Lancaster. Gibson meanwhile accompanied Young on his approach to divert the anti-aircraft fire from the dam towers onto himself and to allow his gunners to provide covering fire. Gibson radioed back to England the prearranged code word, indicating that the dam had been breached. Wing Commander Gibson then led the remainder of his force to the Eder Dam where, with complete disregard for his own safety, he repeated his tactics and although the first two mines failed to breach the dam, the third Lancaster succeeded. For his gallantry in this raid, Wing Commander Gibson received the Victoria Cross and 32 other members of the squadron were also decorated. 10 TWYNHAMS HOSPITALITY TOURS DAMBUSTERS INTRODUCTION TOUR

Your tour commences on Sunday morning as we get together in London ready for our luxury coach ride to Lincolnshire. After a brief stop for afternoon tea at one of the Dambusters practice dam locations, we arrive at the Petwood, our hotel for the next four nights. This was the home of the Dambusters crews during the build-up to the raid in May After an early dinner we will have an exclusive showing of the 1955 Dambusters film, in a very unique location. DAY TWO Monday. Today, we take the opportunity to tour the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby. You will get to see the BBMF aircraft, in particular the Avro Lancaster, at close quarters and observe the skilled technicians keeping these historic warbirds in airworthy condition. After a traditional pub lunch, we make our way to RAF Scampton the operational base for the Dambusters crews of 617 Squadron, where we have arranged a visit to Guy Gibson s office. After dinner at a local restaurant a special guest speaker will entertain you into the evening. including breakfast Drinks reception on the first and last evenings Daily transfers in our luxury coach Lancaster taxi ride 30-minute Dambusters Run helicopter flight* Entry and guided tour of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and RAF Scampton visit Group dinner every night including a 1/2 bottle of wine per person DAMBUSTERS TOUR PART TWO ENEMY COAST AHEAD Coming September 2019 DAY THREE Tuesday. It s time for a major highlight of the tour, your chance to take a taxi ride in an original WW II Lancaster. We have exclusively booked Just Jane for the day and there will be plenty of photo opportunities before you take your seat. After a briefing in the operations hut you climb aboard this iconic aircraft and feel the four Rolls Royce Merlin engines throb as they build up to take-off power. Once it s moving down the runway, the tail wheel lifts and you are experiencing the same sensation as those crews back on 16th May A day to remember, followed in the evening by a dinner in a location that will never be forgotten. DAY FOUR Wednesday. After checking out of the Petwood Hotel we travel south to Derwent Water in Derbyshire. This is where 617 Squadron mastered low-level flying and perfected their dambusting technique. You will now get the chance to retrace the steps of your heroes with a 30-minute helicopter flight over the stunning scenery of the Peak District, culminating in a pass over Derwent dam, exactly as the Dambusters did in training admittedly a little higher than the 60 feet they practised at! After all this excitement, enjoy a relaxing journey back to London and our farewell drinks and last group dinner. Group lunch on all days Immerse yourself in the history of the Dambusters raid and commemorate the gallant heroes of 617 Squadron with like-minded enthusiasts. The Dambusters Tour Part One, takes you from the raid planning, through the weeks of intensive low-level training to the point of take-off on 16th May 1943 with our truly interactive and exclusive tour. *Subject to weather conditions. After take-off from RAF Scampton the first two waves of Lancasters were timed to cross the enemy coast simultaneously. Eventually wave one arrived over the Möhne Reservoir and Gibson's aircraft ("G for George") made the first run, followed by Hopgood ("M for Mother"). Hopgood's aircraft was hit by flak as it made its low-level run and was caught in the blast of its own bomb, crashing shortly afterwards when a wing disintegrated. With two of the precious Upkeep bouncing-bombs launched and no sign of the dam wall being breached, pressure began to mount. In September 2019 our follow-up tour Enemy Coast Ahead takes you from Lincolnshire to the Ruhr Valley in Germany to learn more about Operation Chastise. THE THIRTIES The de Havilland Tiger Moth was the RAF s foremost training aircraft entering WWII, it s open tandem cockpit making it a perfect platform for trainees. This is your chance to take to the skies and imagine yourself as a budding fighter pilot taking his first training flight. If you prefer to travel back to the thirties in style then the Dragon Rapide vintage airliner is for you. You can take a graceful sightseeing flight over Cambridgeshire, London or a location of your choice in one of the last flying Dragon Rapides in the world. Each of the eight seats on board has a window, perfect for viewing the landscape below. THE FORTIES The T6 Harvard is a powerful and exciting entry to the world of warbird flying. It was used to train WWII pilots converting to the legendary Spitfire and Hurricane and post-war as a ground attack, light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Still popular at airshows, the Harvard has also been used many times to simulate various Japanese aircraft, including the Mitsubishi Zero, in movies depicting World War II in the Pacific theatre. The large cockpit glass area allows for unhindered viewing of local landmarks and once in the air the pilot will demonstrate some of the aerobatics the Harvard is capable of, before handing the controls over to you for your chance to become a warbird pilot. The Chipmunk is a tandem, two-seat, single-engine trainer aircraft developed and manufactured by de Havilland in Canada shortly after WWII it was typically employed as a replacement for the Tiger Moth bi-plane. Known to many ex-air Cadets and RAF pilots, the Chipmunk was a very popular piston engine training aircraft and was in service with the RAF for many years, only being retired in You can experience a trial flying lesson or, for the more adventurous, enjoy a full aerobatic experience. One of our experienced flight instructors will carefully prepare you for the flight, explaining the instruments and finally taking to the skies with you. MiG-15 We proudly present our first jet flight experience in the famous classic military fighter, the MiG-15. The Russian designed and built MiG-15 successfully intercepted UN fighter jets and bombers in the Korean War. The term MiG-Alley is well-known in military aviation history, it was the region around Yalo river between China and North Korea, notorious for countless dogfights. Before the US Air Force introduced the F-86, the MiG-15 was superior to American fighters. It was flown by North Korean and Chinese Forces and also secretly by the Soviets. USAF pilots nicknamed April 12, 1951 Black Thursday, after thirty MiG- 15s attacked thirty-six B-29 bombers escorted by approximately one hundred F-80s and F-84s. Three B-29s were shot down and seven more were damaged, with no casualties on the communist side. The MiG-15 is an incredible aircraft, often described as a jet engine with a cockpit on top. It is able to reach a maximum speed of Mach one and you will be able to control the jet yourself during the flight. The flight program consists of looping, rolls, Immelmann turns and extreme high-speed low-level flying. All of this will be discussed with you during your pre-flight briefing and tailored to your preferences. The airbase is an hour from Prague in the Czech Republic. DE HAVILLAND TIGER MOTH A thirties biplane designed by Geoffrey de Havilland, it was operated by the Royal Air Force and many other operators as a primary trainer aircraft. In addition to this principal use, WWII saw RAF Tiger Moths operating in other capacities, including maritime surveillance, defensive anti-invasion preparations, and even some as light bombers. The Tiger Moth s open tandem cockpit is a perfect platform for trainees. This is your chance to take to the skies and imagine yourself as a budding fighter pilot taking your first training flight. DE HAVILLAND DRAGON RAPIDE If you prefer to travel back to the thirties in style then the Dragon Rapide vintage airliner is for you. Upon its introduction in Summer 1934 it proved to be a popular aircraft with airlines and private civil operators alike, attaining considerable foreign sales in addition to its domestic use. You can take a graceful sightseeing flight over Cambridgeshire, London or a location of your choice in one of the last flying Dragon Rapides in the world. Each of the eight seats on board has a window, perfect for viewing the landscape below. NORTH AMERICAN T6 HARVARD The T6 Harvard is a powerful and exciting entry to the world of warbird flying. 15 D-DAY 75TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR J U N E N O R M A N D Y, F R A N C E The Allied invasion of Normandy, Operation Overlord, took place on 6th June D-Day as it became known was the largest seaborne invasion in history and began the liberation of German-occupied North-Western Europe from Nazi control, laying the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front marks the 75th anniversary of this monumental event in world history and Twynhams Tours are planning a very special remembrance tour to commemorate the event.
