2014 FACET CONFERENCE Geotourism Tourism Down Under May 2015 Perth & Rottnest Island FACET s 19 th annual conference focused on Geotourism, which is an integral part of Western Australia s nature-based tourism product. Interest in geotourism is growing worldwide, as people seek to learn and understand more about these extraordinary landscapes and the role that geology plays in shaping the environment. FACET hosted the Inaugural Global Geotourism Conference in 2008 and has continued to promote the tourism opportunities for Western Australia in embracing its geological heritage. During the two-day conference, delegates gained a heightened awareness of the State s ancient geoheritage and explored tourism opportunities linked to these unique landscapes. Day one was held in Perth at the Department of Parks and Wildlife s Kieran McNamara Conservation Science Centre Building. Topics included: International Geoparks Using geotourism as a point of difference Geology and architecture Delivering Geotourism products Day two was held on Rottnest Island, where delegates embarked on a geocache activity unearthing some of the geological stories of the Island. They then returned to the Rottnest Island Country Club to workshop a 10-point template for the development of geotourism product. In addition to the conference program, delegates were invited to travel to Mt Magnet to attend the Astro Rock Festival, an annual community event that connects the night skies with the amazing outback landscape, or stay over on Rottnest Island to further explore the natural beauty of the Island. 5

These conferences do not happen without a lot of input behind the scenes and we would like to thank the conference committee for their input into the conference program. The driving forces behind this conference were FACET Founder, Mrs. Pat Barblett AM, who convened the conference and Mrs. Pauline McMullan FACET s long standing Executive Officer who undertook the logistical aspects of the conference. FACET is proud to have consistently delivered interesting and informative conference programs over the last 19 years. These conferences provide the tourism industry with a platform to keep them informed and ensure that cultural and nature-based tourism in Western Australia remains a significant player in the State s economy. 6
FACET 2014/15 Annual Report 2014 FACET AWARDS The 2014 FACET Awards were presented by the Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi at a tourism industry breakfast held in October at Matilda Bay on the River. FACET represents the nature based, cultural, heritage and eco-tourism sectors of the tourism industry and the FACET Awards were established to recognise FACET members who demonstrate best practice, commitment and contribution to these sectors. Three categories were awarded in 2014, the FACET Operator Award, the FACET Student Award and the Pat Barblett Medal, which is named after our Founder Mrs Pat Barblett, AM. Mandurah Cruises won the 2014 FACET Operator Award This award recognises sustainable tourism operators who focus on providing experiences that foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation. Mandurah Cruises are a very worthy recipient of this award. The business has been in operation for some 30 years, adhering to an extensive environmental policy, and was the first Australian business to obtain EcoPlus Accreditation, which is a further testament to their commitment to fostering environmental and cultural understanding. Lori-Ann Shibish was awarded the 2014 FACET Student Award Lori-Ann is currently studying her Masters of Tourism Management at Edith Cowan University. Her Master s research paper focuses on Aboriginal cultural and ecotourism development in national parks. Lori-Ann s vision for the cultural and ecotourism industry is to raise its profile to become the preferred type of tourism, creating a paradigm shift away from mass and consumptive tourism. The aim is to encourage people to embrace the experience of connecting with nature as well as for sustainable, ecologically and culturally sensitive tourism development and for preservation of our environmental assets and cultural heritage. The 2014 Pat Barblett Medal was awarded to Colin Ingram Immediate past Vice Chair of FACET and Senior Planning Officer with the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Colin has had a life-long passion for connecting people with parks and is a very deserving recipient of this special award. The Pat Barblett Medal recognises the extraordinary personal and professional achievements and contribution made by an individual to the tourism industry in Western Australia. Colin has worked in the tourism and outdoor recreation industry, specialising in nature-based tourism and ecotourism, for over 30 years and has contributed greatly to the nature-based, ecotourism product offering in our National Parks. FACET would like to thank members who entered the FACET Awards and acknowledge the judges for reviewing the nominations. 7
FACET 2014/15 Annual Report 2014 FACET GOLDEN GUIDE AWARD Loris Harding, owner of Taste Bud Tours received the 2014 FACET Golden Guide Award at the 2014 Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards. Having travelled extensively from an early age, Loris feels privileged to have met some outstanding and passionate guides who inspired her to seek out a career in the tourism industry and become a professional guide. Loris has a background in marketing, which provided her with the necessary skills as she became involved in tourism in the Swan Valley region. Prior to embarking on her own business in 2010, Loris was instrumental in establishing Swan Valley Wagon Trails, a multi-award winning tourism operation. She was also a Senior Tour Guide delivering wine tours for Swan Valley Tours and was invited to build a Swan Valley based bus operation in partnership with the successfully established Pink Bus Tours, winning the Best New Business in the Hanson Swan Business Awards. Unashamedly a foodie Loris is living the dream. In 2010 Loris took the bold step and established Taste Bud Tours, delivering a unique experience aimed at showcasing the nationally awarded Food and Wine Trail of the Swan Valley. The region had long been regarded as a wine region so Loris set about to expose the wide range of food experiences the Valley had to offer. Taste Bud Tours provides visitors to the region with an extended grazing experience, which boasts variety, seasonal freshness, historical background and personal encounters with producers. Each tour visits no less than 10 delicious locations enjoying 25+ different tasting experiences to excite the senses. Taste Bud Tours was selected by Experience Perth to host Rich Keam, WA s Taste Master during his visit to Perth and has received a long list of business accolades. Whilst Loris has achieved many awards for her creative tour guiding ventures, nothing compares to the prestige associated with the individual FACET Golden Guide Award. Loris feels totally elated yet humbled by the honour bestowed upon so few. To be acknowledged the best in your chosen field is a life s dream come true, said Loris when presented with the 2014 FACET Golden Guide Award. FACET member Dr Diane Lee, recently produced a Tool Kit to assist potential nominees with their FACET Golden Guide Award submission. FACET also provides the judges for this award and would like to offer our sincere thanks to Executive member Tracy Shea (Judging Chair) and FACET members Ellen Bradley and Cherie Toovey for overseeing the judging of this Award. This is always a difficult job due to the high calibre of applicants each year and we appreciate their time and commitment. 8
FINANCIAL SUMMARY & STATEMENTS FACET ended the 2014/2015 period with cash assets totaling $37,597, recording a loss of $31,203. The loss was due in the main to the appointment of a Marketing Officer ($23,750) on a contract basis to raise FACET s profile within the tourism industry through the social media platform. In addition to this, due to FACET operating on a cash basis, income and expenditure relevant to the reporting period is often expended or receipted outside of the financial period. This is a common occurrence with the FACET annual tourism conference. See notes pertaining to the profit and loss for more information. Expenditure for the year totaled $97,954. In addition to FACET s existing partners and sponsors, the organisation welcomed additional sponsorship from the State Heritage Office. FACET s forum program returned a profit to the organisation of $4,693, together with the conference these tourism programs are not only important for the tourism industry, but provide important income for the organisation. Income for the reporting period totalled $66, Sharon Carmichael, CPA ( ), undertook an audit of the financial statements on 20/10/2015. 13 Conclusion 2014/15 was another busy year for FACET with six forums and a conference as well as a number of other activities aimed at raising awareness of the issues facing natural, cultural and heritage tourism in Western Australia. FACET s 2015 conference focused on Geotourism and examined the ways in which communities can use their unique environment and geological features as a key driver for tourism development. FACET was able to attract national and international leaders in the geotourism sector to present and a 10 point template guide for geotourism development has been developed and will be available shortly. I would personally like to thank Pat Barblett, AM for convening this conference and for her continued commitment and vision. I would also like to acknowledge the work undertaken by Pauline McMullan, FACET s Executive Officer in the seemless delivery of the conference. One of the key initiatives undertaken by FACET during 2014/15 was a project to raise FACET s profile and create a greater social media presence. One of the challenges facing organisations like FACET is the heavy reliance on volunteer executive committee members to undertake key roles in development and promotion. FACET made the decision to invest in additional resources to help with the short-term marketing strategy. Margaret Wilson was engaged on a short term contract to assist FACET to develop a strong membership strategy and to create a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. At the end of the 12 months, FACET has increased its membership, developed a corporate membership structure, doubled its reach on Facebook and established a Twitter presence. Margaret Wilson is very well known in the tourism industry and made a significannt impact on raising FACET s profile and and consolidating its presence in an everchanging environment due to the influence of social media. FACET s Facebook page now provides links and information relating to new initiatives and tourism news as well as providing exposure to FACET s partners and providing members with timely information. In the past couple of years FACET has also become involved in working on a number of joint initiatives and is pleased to now be represented on the Department of Parks and Wildlife s Tourism Industry Reference Group. In addition, FACET has been working with Tourism WA to deliver an ecotourism development workshop linked to the Ecotourism Australia Conference, due to be held on Rottnest in November Finally FACET has been working closely with Parks and Wildlife and her Excellency the Governor on the development of a Parks Foundation. FACET has also been to able attract new sponsorship through the State Heritage Office and this will enhance FACET s ability to increase its focus on the heritage tourism sector. In addition, stronger relationships are being developed with the cultural sector and it is hoped that this work can be continued into the future. FACET could not survive without sponsorship and we are continually grateful to the Department of Parks and Wildlife and Tourism Western Australia, our long term partners who provide both cash sponsorship, but also invaluable input through membership of the Executive Committee and inkind support. We are also very grateful to the City of Perth, which has sponsored us over the past couple of years helping us to provide focused seminars and networking opportunities in Perth. I have had the privilege of being the Chair of FACET since October 2012 and I will be standing down next year to allow someone else to bring new ideas and life to the organisation. I think FACET is in an exciting phase as it transforms with the tourism industry, and I look forward to continuing to be involved in this important organisation. 11
I would personally like to thank the executive committee for its hard work and support over the past year. In particular, I would like to thank Pat Barblett, AM for her unwavering generosity in mentoring me through the ups and downs of my Chairmanship. I would also like to thank Pauline McMullan, FACET s Executive Officer since its inception. Pauline has an amazing depth of knowledge and makes sure that the organisation continues to run smoothly. I look forward to being involved in FACET s 2016 conference focusing on Sense of Place. I thank you for your continuing support as members and sponsors of this organisation. Claire Savage Chair 12
