4 There s something special in the derry air... The hardest thing about going to Derry~Londonderry is leaving it. For while it s not the biggest place on earth, Derry is living proof that the best things really do come in little packages. And don t think it s like a smaller scale Belfast or Dublin. It really is a place apart. If it s history you want, you ll find it on spectacular walls which skirt the city and in museums telling the stories of long-ago sieges, emigration and the more recent Troubles. If it s the arts you crave, you ve can t miss them in what was the UK First City of Culture in And if you re thirsting for a libation and a bit of craic which is the byword for having fun here there are pubs, clubs and music venues around every corner. The inside track Most of Derry s main attractions are less than a mile apart. Probably the best way to get your bearings is to walk the 17th century walls which encircle the old city. It s reckoned they re one of the best preserved and most complete walls in Europe. All kinds of teenage kicks. You don t need a telescope to see the stars in Derry. For the city has produced more big names in music and the theatre than many places which are ten times its size. But one of Derry s most remarkable claims to fame is that it has produced two Nobel Prize Winners went to the same school, around the same time. Politician John Hume helped build the peace process that has transformed Derry and Northern Ireland while Seamus Heaney was a poet whose work is admired by President Bill Clinton and singer Paul Simon. Saints as well as scholars. The saint who gave the aforementioned college its name is also known as Colmcille and Columba who s credited with spreading Christianity in modern-day Scotland though he s also the patron saint of Derry where he formed a monastery. As well as the College, there s an historic and recently refurbished St Columb s Church of Ireland Cathedral which is on the city walls and is well worth a visit. In Longtower Street you ll find a Catholic Church called St Columba s (Long Tower) and opposite is the hugely popular St Columba s Heritage Centre which is in a former school affectionately known as the Wee Nuns school. Top of the shops Derry has some of the top shopping centres in Ireland plus a host of smaller shops with a uniquely Derry flavour. Stroll down the steep and bustling Shipquay Street and take a left into the Craft Village where you may think from the design and décor that you re going back in time to a bygone age but you ll discover a lively shopping experience which is bang up to date and crammed with the fruits of skilled artisans labours. There s a little bit of history and culture on every street corner and one of the best calendar of events to showcase the atmosphere created by the warm, witty and welcoming people you re about to meet. 135 Welcome to Foyle Marina TRAVEL INFO 01 The Marina consists of two pontoons, one a 200mtr long wooden structure, the second a 140mtr concrete structure offering in excess of 600mtrs of secure deep water pontoon berthing. Our marina can accommodate all but the largest private vessels, we can accommodate vessels up to 130mtrs long and 1000tons. The Marina has shore power, fresh water & waste reception facilities. Toilets and showers are on site. Pontoons are accessed using secure key fobs for berth holders or accessed via gate keypad codes for visitors and the area is under 24 hour CCTV security surveillance. On arrival at Lough Foyle it is requested you contact Harbour Radio on VHF channel 14. You will be advised which pontoon to moor at. On arrival at the marina dues can be paid at the Coffee House café situated by the Marina entrance, you can also purchase water & shore power cards. On arrival at the marina please telephone Harbour Radio on you will then be advised of the Marina Gate code for the duration of your visit.
