FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Coves, It is often said that some of our best talks are delivered by members of our own club and this was certainly true of John Walker s presentation on aged-care funding last Friday. By the show of hands, many of us have experienced working through the emotional, medical, legal and financial aspects of this dilemma when caring for family members or friends. Judging by the interest shown, this has been a very worthwhile subject to explore. 1 of 5 15/07/14 10:24 PM

2 Several of you have mentioned to me that you would appreciate a little more fellowship time during our meetings and having only an hour to fit everything in can often present difficulties. However, on Friday, it was good having some time to chat we even gave our speaker an extra few minutes! Next Friday, we welcome our new District Governor Barry Antees, paying his official visit. Barry is a member of Parramatta City Club and has a surf lifesaving and Rugby Union background running side-by-side with his family life, his contributions to the community and to Rotary. Following what has been an exceptionally busy Rotary year in Sydney, it will be interesting to discover what Barry has in store for us during 2014/15. Sun Herald columnists Peter FitzSimons and Charles Waterstreet have both spoken at Rotary meetings in the past year, the former at District Conference and CW at one of our breakfasts. These two are as different as chalk and cheese and I find their weekly rants both topical and entertaining in a paper that claims to be always independent. With Peace and Conflict Resolution being one of Rotary s six areas of focus, these guys continually remind me that listening and reading differing points of view on any issue is the key to understanding where and why conflict occurs. A good appreciation of history and the dangers of fundamentalism also help us not to repeat mistakes of the past and to maintain the hard-earned peace that so many of us enjoy. This brings me neatly back to John Walker s talk and a reminder that so many of our frail and elderly relos have been through the struggles and suffering that were necessary in developing our relatively safe and prosperous society today. Helping them through their twilight years is the very least we can do. Thank you John. Michael Austin GUEST SPEAKER: 18 JUL Barry Antees District 9675 Governor 2014/15 Having a vocational background in Accountancy, Finance and Computer systems, Barry s career has spanned the industries of meat processing, property development, property trusts and computer systems. Prior to 2007 he was employed as the General Manager of Rotary Down Under, the official approved Rotary Regional magazine for the South West Pacific region. Barry has been a member of the Rotary Club of Parramatta City since 2001 and was elected Club President for the Centennial year He has also served on District Boards at many levels since Until recently he was an active long service member of Umina Surf Life Saving Club and has been active in community service on the Central Coast for over 25 years. An avid supporter and former player of Rugby Union, Barry has coached junior representative teams for many years. Currently Barry owns and operates the Rotary licensed RDU Merchandise and Promotions business at Seven Hills. CITY2SURF: SUN 10 AUG Coves, it's that time of year again. I urgently need nominations for volunteer marshals for the City2Surf charity run on Sunday 10 August. For each volunteer, the Club will receive $55.00 to be applied to 2 of 5 15/07/14 10:24 PM

3 Club projects - and each volunteer will receive a t-shirt - what more could you ask for a morning's light work? Details are still to emerge, but I believe the time commitment will be from about 7.00am to 1.00pm, and the location is the Eastern Suburbs - same as last year. Our target number is 20 this year, but this may lead to greater things in years to come. And we are also negotiating with Fairfax Media for a more realistic payment in future years for the time and effort involved. If you can make yourself available for this very worthwhile cause, could you please let me know ASAP: your name, mobile phone number, number of people you can bring with you and t-shirt size S, M or L. This year, there is an online training requirement. Fairfax advises that there are two online modules which course marshals are required to complete/view. The first one is an OH&S powerpoint which they are required to view and then complete an online questionnaire. As soon as I hear from you, I will send you the link to this module. The second module is a video which, believe it or not, is still being produced. I will send it out as soon as I receive it. Many thanks Ted McKeown RUGBY BASH: SAT 16 AUG INVITATION TO A BARBEQUE AND RUGBY AT 9 MITCHELL ST. GREENWICH This is the closest we can get to a Boardroom Bash nowadays but for entertainment we do have some sacrificial New Zealanders attending in the form of Maurice and Heather York and Alistair and Helen Gray. Bring along your Aussie colours, your partners and your beer/wine and we will provide the sausages and bread rolls. It will be simple and fun (if we win). Please rsvp by as we are limited to the first 20 couples around our TV so first in get the spots. Looking forward to you being here. Tom and Meg Gervay PS The NZers are bringing along the Pavlova they claim to have invented and suggest we bring along some 'humble pie''.
