1 N ew sletter,n r. 1/2009 SeaSide - N ew sletter SeaSide provokes to act since the common Maritime Cultural Heritage of the South Baltic area has the great potential to bind the regions of the South Baltic together in order to build up one common identity. SeaSide sensibly aims at emphasizing and utilizing this great potential through various activities. South Baltic cities and regions w ill be highly qualified as international cultural destinations. Maritime events and festivals w ill be attractivated and a common travelling exhibition w ill be designed to draw cross-border interest. T he SeaSide project team is made of thirteen partners from four countries of the South Baltic Sw eden, Lithuania, Poland and G ermany. T his cooperation of municipalities,museums and tourism associations combine efforts from various fields and know -how on an international basis. 2 N ew sletter,n r. 1/2009 B ureau H anse Sail(Lead B eneficiary) Since 1991 the Hanse Sail is an annual mega event organized by the Bureau Hanse Sail on the second w eekend of A ugust. More than 200 participating old time sailing vessels berth every year in four or five packs alongside the quay. A t this time of the year a maritime ancient kaleidoscope from cogs up to square riggers in action dominates the view over the city s harbour and sea. V isitors get the chance to experience the floating cultural heritage and different maritime traditions. T he lovely restored ships set their sails for destinations to other Baltic Sail festivals in G ermany,denmark,sw eden,poland and Lithuania. Baltic Sail is an association of sail cities w ith the goal to promote the Baltic as a first class sailing resort,contribute the development of maritime tourism and bind the regions together to improve the netw ork of sail cities and regions. R esponsibilities in the project: - Lead Partner,Lead Beneficiary,Project Leader - Developing maritime festivals as attractions w ith international recognition - Enlarging the netw ork of Sail Cities & R egions in the South Baltic area - Developing new routings and races among BA LT IC SA IL cities K laipeda U niversity K laip da U niversity w as established in 1990 on the basis of several faculties w hich had belonged to other higher schools of Lithuania. T he U niversity has started its academic activities in Located in K laip da city,on the coast of the Baltic Sea,K laip da U niversity is the only institution of a very high education and research standard in Lithuanian s seacoast that has full infrastructure and rapidly developing community. Scientific and academic activities are interdisciplinary,open and innovative. T he U niversity has around 10,000 students. T he institution prepares professionals of high qualification in biomedicine, physical, humanitarian, social, technology science and art area w hile offering undergraduate,postgraduate and doctoral degrees in a w ide range of programmes. K laip da U niversity administers fundamental and applied research, is engaged in educative, cultural, consultative, experimental activities and meets the unique requirements of Lithuania as a maritime state. T he U niversity has seven faculties (N atural Sciences and Mathematics, the Humanities, Marine Engineering, Fine A rts, Pedagogy,Social Sciences,Health Sciences),tw o study institutes (Maritime and Continuing Studies) and five scientific institutes (Baltic Coastal R esearch and Planning, Baltic R egional History and A rchaeology, Marine Landscape,Mechatronics,R egional Policy and Planning),scientific research and study centres,a library, the Botanical garden, the publishing office and a career centre. 4 SeaSide s K ick-o ff in R ostock R epresentatives of all thirteen SeaSide partner institutions participated at the first official project meeting in R ostock-w arnemünde O ctober 9,2008. T his meeting w as not only devoted to feed all partners w ith input about the overall project management,but also to get more precise according to four major project tasks aiming at the promotion of the Southern Baltic area, such as: M aritim e H eritage A tlas a digital platform on M aritim e C ultural H eritage contents T ravelling exhibition performed by four museum partners on four subthemes w ithin one common umbrella subject T raditionalsailing as attractivator and/ or marketing opportunity for sailing events T ourism m arketing by making use of common maritime heritage as image creator for foreign markets and museums as experts to deliver know ledge on how to create emotions SeaSiders are actively w orking in smaller component groups dealing w ith these activities. T he K ick-o ff meeting has been connected to the C onference M aritim e Traditions in European W aters - W hat's on organized together w ith the European Maritime Heritage O rganisation O ctober 10,2008. The main themes of the conference referred to providing the floating maritime heritage in correspondence to the importance of maritime festivals. A ll responsible persons and authorities have been addressed to use their influence to preserve the maritime cultural heritage. O ne great achievement of the C onference M aritim e Traditions in European W aters is the Declaration (O ctober 10,2008) on several actions for preserving the maritime heritage show ing positive effects and the necessity of maintaining it. Moreover,participants had the great opportunity to extend their netw ork by getting in contact w ith several traditional sailing vessel ow ners. 5 A LL SeaSiders m et for the second tim e O n March 18, 2009 the SeaSide team met officially for the 2nd time in Särö, Sw eden. T his meeting w as connected to a visit to T U R G othenburg taking place March 19,2009. T he development of the common project logo has been one of the points on the agenda. The project partners have chosen and fine-tuned one particular logo out of four drafts w hich symbolizes the maritime character & maritime partner netw ork and w hich w ill act as identification for all activities that are related to the project. Moreover,after a few months of being active in the project SeaSiders exchanged information about the status quo of all three content-related components 3-5: C om ponent 3:T he w orking group on museum netw ork shortly introduced their joint exhibition concept presenting four topics w ithin a common frame in order to characterize the common identity of the South Baltic area. Furthermore, they stressed that the practicalities and logistics regarding the exhibition still need to be clarified,such as the development of a production plan and the exhibition design. C om ponent 4:The w orking group on traditional sailing started w orking on tw o different maritime event projects, such as a race event of historical ships Cuttersharks from Denmark to G ermany and Harbour Symphony,a melodical arrangement of typhones of historical ships,bells of city churches & musicians at a festival in G dansk. Meanw hile,both events have been successfully carried out. C om ponent 5:T he w orking group of tourism marketing is w orking on the intensification of a closer partner cooperation,development of tourist products and marketing strategies to address target groups. A sub-w orking group of this component dealing w ith the Maritime A tlas has presented a first concrete proposal on possible contents of the atlas that has the common goal to attract more international visitors. O n the second day of the meeting SeaSiders have attended the TU R G othenburg in Sw eden either as visitors or as exhibitors. Either w ay this has been a great chance to get in touch w ith tour operators not only for know -how exchange, w hich can be useful for planned product packaging, but also to promote their region as SeaSide destination. 6 T he 3rd project m eeting in K laipeda T he 3rd project meeting in K laipeda July 23, 2009 took place in connection to the conference Preserving Maritime Heritage :Experiences and O pportunities of the Lithuanian Sea Museum July 24-25,2009. Beside administrational issues,such as concluding the 1st reporting and planning of the next project meeting - layout drafts of the project w ebsite have been presented for a final decision of the SeaSiders. Furthermore,the w orking group of component 3 (museum netw ork) introduced the fixed dates of the upcoming travelling exhibition 1sea4stories Exhibition places Exhibition dates: K laipeda A pril 15,2010 May 31,2010 R ostock July 18,2010 A ugust 29,2010 G dansk September 10,2010 N ovember 30,2010 K arlskrona December 15,2010 until March,2011 Planning to the travelling exhibition a lot of aspects have to be focused on. T he design,production,logistics and promotion activities of the touring exhibition w ill be an upcoming matter of this w orking group. T he Lithuanian Sea Museum had its 30th anniversary and organized the international conference Preserving Maritime Heritage: Experiences and O pportunities taking place at the O ld Port Hotel in K laipeda July 24, 2009 July 25,2009. The theme of this conference w as strongly connected to one of SeaSide s main project objective utilizing common maritime cultural heritage. O n July 24, the conference w as opened by R. Mazeikiene, Deputy Director of the Lithuanian Sea Museum and further w elcoming w ords w ere said by R. Staseviciute and M. Dauksys from Lithuanian A rchitects A ssociation,k laipeda branch. T he presentations w ere made by lectors from EMH (European Maritime Heritage),Bureau Hanse Sail,Polish Maritime Museum, Lithuanian Sea Museum, boat builders from R usne and Palanga and department of cultural heritage under the ministry of culture of the Lithuanian R epublic. O ne speaker w as J. Litw in,director of Polish Maritime Museum w ith the topic O rganization of Maritime Cultural Heritage Preservation in Poland. T he topic T raditional ships in operation as part of our maritime heritage and as main actors of events. Maritime events as factors of economic development and as platforms to save traditional ships, w as presented by Holger Bellgardt, Head of Bureau Hanse Sail. A s result of the conference a proposal of a declaration w as made touching issues of preserving maritime cultural heritage. T he fourth project meeting w ill take place in Berlin March 8th - March 11th,2010 connected to a fair visit IT B Berlin. SeaSide N ew sletter,n r. 1/ p.5

7 Partner N ew s B ureau H anse Sail- W ith U B C sailb A LT IC T our on D A R M LO D Z IEZ Y In 2010 the Polish barque DA R MLO DZ IEZ Y (G dynia) w ill sail w ith 50 passengers from K ristiansand (N orw ay), w hich has been the host of the latest U BC G eneral A ssembly and is one of the host ports of the T all Ship R aces (w w w.sailtraininginternational.org),to R ostock (G ermany),w here the 20th Hanse Sail (w w w.hansesail.com) w ill take place as a major event of the series Baltic Sail maritime events. T he barque w ill depart from K ristiansand A ugust 1st via K olding (Denmark), the seat of U BC presidency, w here it arrives A ugust 2nd. T herefrom it w ill continue sailing A ugust 3rd and arrives in R ostock A ugust 4th. Boarding w ill be July 31st,one day before the DA R MLO DZIEZY sets out for R ostock via K olding. T he cruise w ill be ended in R ostock A ugust 5th. A rrival to K ristiansand and departure from R ostock is to be organized and booked individually by the participants. T he price of the cruise w ill be 750,00 / participant including fullboard. T he cruise participants w ill not only be fully involved in the board routines,but they w ill also get trained to sail the ship as a team. T hus, being in the same boat and setting sails jointly w ill bring people together and let them become friends. N ew P roject team at B lekinge M useum A s A gneta Ericsson and Susanne A rve have left their employments at the Blekinge County Museum new key persons are to be announced w ho are in charge of SeaSide project w ork in the future. Lennart Lilja,economist,and K arin N ilsson, project manager, are looking forw ard to w orking hand in glove w ith all SeaSide partners as a team and to getting involved in the project process more and more. 8 Partner N ew s H arbour Sym phony goes B altic Sail T he spectacular performance Harbour Symphony during the Baltic Sail 2009 w as held in G dansk on July 10, T he idea of the symphony comes from Canada. T here are sounds of music anchored in the sounds of the port and the city combined w ith the sounds of musical instruments. T he natural scenery for this performance w as the port. T he G erman composer W olfgang Schmiedt brought the idea to R ostock,w here the music w as performed during the Hanse Sail event. T his year the Harbour Symphony w as created by G erman and Polish musicians in G dansk under musical direction of Martin Pollok from Canada. Musicians from G ermany came to G dansk by the sea on board of the traditional sailing vessel Hansine. N atural background for the musical scenes w ere created by the sailing vessels on the Motlaw a R iver and O ld Tow n architecture very close to them in the centre of G dask. T he sailing vessel Hansine joined other Baltic Sail participants. T he concert w as performed at night surrounded by the sounds of ship sirenes and the carillon bells. It w as a great experience for citizens and tourists w ho have arrived to G dansk. Harbour Symphony - it w as one of the elements of the project SeaSide co-financed by the EU funds. 9 Partner N ew s Polish M aritim e M useum on 2 m ain SeaSide m issions T w o important issues w ithin the SeaSide Project that the Polish Maritime Museum w as focusing on during the last months w ere:the Maritime Heritage A tlas and the common exhibition 1sea4stories. T he Maritime Heritage A tlas is to become a useful tool of South Baltic Sea promotion. It aims at potential visitors from Europe and the rest of the w orld. It also should educate about common maritime heritage, strengthen regions identity and its recognition. T he Maritime Heritage A tlas is designed as an interactive map show ing maritime heritage contents of the South Baltic R egion such as sites and objects, constructions, museums, technical attractions. Most of them are open to public and are tourist attractions. Part of the items w ill concern historical events, facts and figures,remains of the past chosen by professionals due to their relevance of maritime issues. N atural attractions and aquariums/ oceanariums shall be presented. A ll partners contributed to the contents of the atlas w ith information from their region. T he Polish part of the common exhibition w ill be dedicated to underw ater archaeology. It w as decided to show 8 topics:history of Polish underw ater archaeology and 7 most important sites and w recks from 10th to 20th century. Having studied Business Education at the U niversity of R ostock I specialized also in Business Psychology and T ourism Industry. Besides one semester studying abroad at U niversity Collage Cork,I also w orked six months as intern w ith a tour operator in N ew Zealand. I graduated in September 2008 and traveled again around the w orld w orking on a Cruise Ship for half a year.
