GREETINGS ALL We have had a good year again at the Tocumwal Aerodrome with various aviation events and it s pleasing that groups are returning to take advantage of all that the Tocumwal district has to offer. Our last event at the aerodrome was the Australian Aerobatic Championships October 23 28, 2012, and the MBFC Committee would like to sincerely thank the many volunteers that helped out with the catering and general running of the event. The Tocumwal Anglican Church Hall Rebuilding Appeal was helped out by the ladies of this group providing morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas, our club provided afternoon refreshments and dinner at night. Australian Aerobatic Championships Congratulations to the Champions of the Event: Australian Sportsman Champion: Chris Shiels VIC Pitts Special S ZA VH URL Australian Intermediate Champion: John Lee VIC DR 107One Design VH JLX 1

The MBFC Volunteers did a splendid job catering for dinner each night. Evening refreshments at the Terminal building, relaxing, announcing the day s aerobatic competition results. 4
182 Boys Father and Son Ian and Julian Brunt. Julian recently arrived at Finley flying a brand new Cessna 182 VH ZWP. Julian initially learnt to fly at Tocumwal and now has an AG Rating and is flying Turbine Thrush aircraft at Mungindi. Notice the choice of drinks Dad (Stubbie) Son (Water)!!! Something to do with the time of day perhaps? Turbine Thrush at Mungindi Note of thanks Geoff Tait wishes to thank Ian for the assurance of no evidence of corrosion under the Cessna Geoff was flying in the Jerilderie area recently. Speaking of Geoff 5
Now, who would this picture of innocence depict?... (Geoff Tait drinking soda water with a green straw?) The truth follows Deniliquin Aero Club Fly-Away Wentworth November Cessna 172 s VH IDT (Owen and Jenny) and VH DQB (Mark and Flo) joined with around 30 aircraft at Wentworth for a well arranged fly-away. MBFC member Geoff Tait joined us from Maryborough, transported by Greg and Julie Slade from Ballarat in their Cessna 206. The Sunrasia Aero club provided a welcoming morning tea and lunch Saturday. After quenching extreme thirsts at the Crown Hotel at Wentworth we embarked on the Wentworth River Cruise ( for an evening on the Darling and Murray Rivers, complete with entertainment from the cruises owners Greg & Julia Evans. Many thanks to the Deniliquin Aero Club team for putting the Wentworth event together, it was an event we will always remember and will be very difficult to better in the future. When staying in Wentworth we would recommend the Darling Junction Motel Excellent! 6
MBFC members With Hon. Sussan Ley Federal Member for Farrer at Wentworth Aero Club. Sussan travels her electorate in a Cessna R182 VH IFR Nice way to go to Work!!! 7
Sunrasia Aero Club Rooms Wentworth (L) Replica Spitfire (R) Interesting Note: MBFC Member Rob Hendy was batching on this Wentworth weekend. He tried to find someone at Tocumwal Aerodrome to go for a fly no luck. Decided to fly himself to Deniliquin Aero Club for brekky only to be told by the one lonely soul manning the toaster there that everyone had gone to Wentworth. Luckily Bill Harvie had the same idea so at least Rob eventually had someone to talk to at Denni.. 8

VHF Base Station Aerial Installation David Bills-Thompson (owner of Cessna IDT) has completed the installation of a base station aerial at our Terminal Building/Club House. We are currently using a borrowed ancient Sky Phone (performance doubtful, despite the top of the range aerial). We would like to upgrade to a more modern reliable transiever when the finances permit. This project will allow us to monitor aircraft traversing our CTAF during events and provide advisory information to them. Many thanks to David for travelling up to Tocumwal from Port Fairey twice to install this aerial. David and apprentice Wayne Attard (OP s Son-in-Law) finishing off the installation of the Base Station aerial. Wayne s skill in installing coax into cabin cruiser boats came in handy on the day. 11
Murray Border Flying Club Membership Fees 2013 A reminder that membership fees are again due January 1, The good news is that these fees remain the same as 2012 $30.00 ($35.00 initial joining membership). Please fill out a Membership form (attached with this newsletter). This assists us to keep MBFC records up to date. The even better news is that if you renew your membership before January 31, 2013 you will be in the draw for a 12 month subscription to Australian Flying Magazine. 12
The de Havilland Mosquito Faster than a Spitfire, the de Havilland Mosquito was known as the Wooden Wonder as it was constructed from wood at a time when the development of aircraft was generally accepted they should be made of metal. The wooden construction enabled the Mosquito to be made at many diverse locations including Parafield SA. Click on the following links for more on the Mosquito: tak6ehoiyeq Göring's comments: The Mosquito famously annoyed the Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, when, on 20 January 1943, the 10th anniversary of the Nazis' seizure of power, a Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station, putting his speech off air. Göring complained about the high speed of the aircraft and its wooden structure, built by a nation he considered to have large metal reserves, while Germany had shortages of such materials and could not produce such a design. 13
In 1940 I could at least fly as far as Glasgow in most of my aircraft, but not now! It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I'm going to buy a British radio set - then at least I'll own something that has always worked. Hermann Göring, 1943.Comments from Wikipedia Perhaps poor old Hermann should have stuck to his Japanese mates for the radio (Ed.) Graduates of No 12 Course at No. 5 Operational Training Unit RAAF in
News Flash: CASA are again tracking Santa Clause on radar this year. The Committee of Murray Border Flying Club recommends you keep a watchful eye out for his expected transition through our CTAF area. Please monitor for his Inbound Call. His expected track would be generally south to Melbourne for a short refreshment stop The MBFC President, Sandy Massina and Committee would also like to extend the compliments of the Season to you and all of your family for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year Santa at the controls of Foxtrot Uniform November awaiting Airways Clearance for YTOC (Tocumwal). (Be very careful in IFR conditions Santa) 15 MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
