Last Chance to trek Kokoda on BERT BERT is funding 4 places on the Kokoda Trek. We are seeking expressions of interest from 2 Members and 2 Employers to take up a BERT funded place on the trek. Expressions close Thursday 31 March 2016 with the lucky trekkers notified mid April. Click here to find out more information on how to apply or contact Amanda Arrowsmith on (07) or aarrowsmith@bert.com.au to talk about getting your spot on the trek funded by BERT. News from the Top End February 2016 saw our Services Sector Coordinator, Donna Harrington and Civil & Major Projects Coordinator, Greg McLaren, travel to the top end to connect with members on the Ichthys Onshore LNG Facilities Major Projects and other significant projects around Darwin. The Ichthys Project is nearly in the fourth year of construction with approximately 18 months to 2 years left to completion. Donna and Greg also visited Leightons Build 1 package and spoke to members working for PHP Contractors, AE Smith, Brown & Moodie and Halikos Roofing about the benefits BERT and CIP provide to its members. As Build 1 winds down to completion later this year the Civil 8 package will ramp up with an estimated 8,000 workers working on site across all trades and packages. Hutchinson Builders are well underway with Stage 1 of the $108 million Gateway Shopping Centre at Palmerston where the guys spent time with BERT and CIP members working for Axis Plumbing, End Fire, J Bros. & Hutchinson Builders. With Darwin's population growing, the requirements of the locals are also expanding and as such, Lend Lease has commenced the site works for the Palmerston Regional Hospital. The project will include a 100 bed inpatient facility, 16 bay emergency department, paediatrics, operating theatres, outpatient facilities, ambulance bays, maternity services and birthing
suites and is slated to be completed by Greg McLaren & the boys commemorating the 74 year anniversary of the bombing of Darwin at Stokes Wharf - site where 23 Waterside workers (MUA) lost their lives Donna Harrington & the Axis Plumbing Boys on site at the Gateway Shopping Centre Palmerston History of BERT Rates Did you know that building workers gave up a pay rise to commence the BERT Fund in 1989? Back in 1989 it was agreed upon by Employers that they would pay a weekly contribution to be set aside for redundancy entitlements, provided the building workers forego their yearly pay rise. This agreement saw the birth of the BERT Fund and Employers contributing $20.00 a week per employee into the Fund for redundancy entitlements. Since then this $20.00 rate has increased over the years resulting in the current BERT Rate of $ as at January BERT RATES (for Adult Worker in Building Sector) $20 $25 $40 $45 $50 $55 $59.95 $64.35 $69 $72 $75 $79 $83 $90 $95 $100

Important Information for CIP Employers & Members When a worker ceases employment, it's the employers obligation to ensure the CIP Termination form is completed either via the online contribution system or by printing and completing the Termination Form. (Available on the CIP website). Not applicable for casual workers. Upon termination, unused sick days are transferred to the members CIP account at no additional cost to the employer. Employers can keep their contribution advices up to date by terminating members in the month they cease employment and indicating their employment period and any sick days taken in the available fields on the online system. Members can register and login to BOBB at anytime to check their account and ensure their employer has transferred any unused sick days back to their CIP account. BOBBs YOUR MATE Over 9,000 members have registered with BOBB. To help us reach our goal of 10,000 member registrations we are offering a weekend away for 2 to the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast to our 10,000th registration! Register now to be in with a chance!
BENEFIT in FOCUS Work Injury Management Service (WIMS) Did you know that as a BERT contributing Employer your organisation can take advantage of the Work Injury Management Service (WIMS) offered by Total Claims Solutions? Thanks to BERT, Total Claims Solutions have been able to assist 93% of injured workers to successfully return to full-time work. In June 2014, Total Claims Solutions commenced managing all workplace injuries for this Queensland based national employer. Through early intervention, the results for 'average days to first return to work' reduced by an average of days.
INDUSTRY News Sense of Community in our Industry Left to right - Peter (Paul's Dad): Brendan (Paul's Brother) and Paul Kate Fitzgerald - Communications & Process Analyst - BERT / CIP It was my absolute pleasure to accompany Janice Moran, our Services Coordinator to meet with CIP member Paul Robinson and his family. Paul is currently receiving CIP benefits after sustaining serious injuries to his spine over 12 months ago. In February 2015 Paul, a crane driver, suffered a devastating spinal injury when he fell off his motorbike at Queensland Motor Park, while enjoying a weekend riding with his brother and mates. The irony of Paul's accident is that the fall, while delivering a serious injury, did not seem that dramatic at the time. Paul and his brother, explained that they have both experienced more dramatic falls and crashes over their years riding. Paul even having two of these more spectacular falls earlier in the day. In fact both describe the accident site as eerie - there were no scratches or marks on Paul, or the bike, or even the area around where he fell. Despite this, Paul knew immediately that something had gone seriously wrong. He describes experiencing no real pain as he was unable to feel his legs but recalls a tingly / pins and needs sensation and a dull headache that increased with intensity following his fall. After being air lifted by Careflight to the PA Spinal Unit and being placed in an induced coma for 2 days, Paul spent over 6 months in hospital undergoing surgeries and a rehabilitation program. A year on, a lot has changed for Paul and his family. Paul is at home recovering from recent surgery to his hand and arm, and is in high spirits. He is undergoing extensive rehabilitation at Burleigh Heads clinic, Making Strides, and successfully adjusting to his new lifestyle.
Paul says "I would be in a very different position without CIP". Paul and his family state the help and support from CIP and all the organisations involved in his injury and recovery can only be described as amazing. What struck me most while sitting with Paul and his family learning of his story, apart from the inspirational recovery of a young, strong man, and witnessing the love and support from his wonderful family, was the way the whole industry and community had come together to assist Paul in his many hours of need. From the CIP Team, and in particular Janice's commitment to the cause, to all the medical staff involved in Paul's recovery and continuing rehabilitation. In addition, the support of the Union and Paul's colleagues who all rallied around him after the event and spent countless hours renovating his home, Total Claims efficiency in managing his claim, and finally the BERT Training Fund who are able to give Paul a promising future by funding his Diploma of Engineering at Griffith College. It truly has made me proud to be a part of this industry. Janice Moran and Paul - Feb 2016
