page 1 Operational Damage Limits Notice (ODLN) training and instruction guide All certified containers and pallets must be inspected for damage before each use. If the container or pallet has been damaged beyond a certain amount it will no longer be airworthy and is not safe to load on the aircraft. A non airworthy container or pallet maybe rejected for loading at the aircraft by ground engineers and/or airworthiness inspectors from civil aviation authorities. The damage limits applicable to any container can be found in the operating manual provided by its original manufacturer, and airlines manuals will also contain instructions specific to their containers and pallets. WHAT IS ODLN? To simplify the process for operations in the cargo environment IATA has created a standard format Operational Damage Limits Notice (ODLN), published in the IATA ULD technical manual. The ODLN can be found on a decal of approximately A4 size attached in a prominent location on the ULD, making it easy for an operator to inspect and decide if the ULD is still airworthy. LEARN HOW TO READ AND USE THE ODLN Nordisk has created an easy-to-use training and instruction guide which gives a thorough but comprehensive introduction to ODLN and the inspection of a container or pallet for damage before use. As you move through the training and instruction guide you will fi nd clear guidance as to the area of the container you are inspecting, examples of allowable and not allowable damage, an airworthiness warning which explains the signifi - cance behind each item in the container that requires inspection, and fi nally a handling tip which explains why particular types of damage will have a particular effect on the handling of the ULD. The damage limitations in this document are for information purpose only. Always refer to the OEMs manual and ODLN when inspecting your unit.
NOTES
page 3 BASE SHEET No more than 0.2 inch / 5 mm sizes dents >5mm <5mm >5mm Even a small dent in the base sheet can be the start of a much larger crack which can happen at any time in which case the container will not be airworthy. A deformed container base makes it diffi cult for the container to move easily over the aircraft roller system and can cause loading problems and delays.
page 4 BASE SHEET No cracks or holes A cracked base sheet has no strength and the container is no longer airworthy. A cracked base will make the container hard to move and can seriously damage the aircraft fl oor, which is expensive to repair.
page 5 BASE EXTRUSION No broken or missing parts The base extrusions are used to lock the container to the aircraft fl oor during fl ight. If they fail the container will no longer be airworthy. Even a small amount of damage to a base extrusion will prevent correct loading and securing by the aircraft locks and can cause the unit to be offl oaded.
page 6 BASE EXTRUSION No more than 1 inch / 25 mm sized cracks in any direction, minimum 20 inch / 500 mm apart <25mm >25mm >100mm >500mm <100mm <500mm >25mm The base extrusions are used to lock the container to the aircraft fl oor during fl ight. If they fail the container will no longer be airworthy. A crack in an edge rail could result in the container breaking loose during fl ight conditions and causing damage to the aircraft.
page 7 BASE EXTRUSION No more than 1 1/10 inch / 28 mm bowed, warped or defl ected extrusion >28mm <28mm >28mm >28mm The base extrusions are used to lock the container into the aircraft hold fl oor. If the edge rail is bent and cannot be locked correctly the container will not be airworthy. Even a small amount of bending of the edge rail will not fi t under the aircraft hold locking system.
page 8 BASE TIE-DOWN At least 3 undamaged adjacent pairs of seat track lips at each internal attachment point. If net door: At least 4 in base at each net attachment point Every container must have points around the base for attaching cargo straps when heavy loads are carried. These must have at least 3 good sections for the strap fi tting to be inserted. NOTE: If damaged when net door, door cannot be secured. The tie down positions in the container are provided for the securing of items over 150 kg by the use of cargo straps. If they are damaged they cannot do this important function properly, and if net door is installed, the door cannot be secured.
page 9 BASE TIE-DOWN No loose or damaged attachment to container structure Every container must have points around the base for attaching cargo straps when heavy loads are carried. These must be correctly attached to the container body. NOTE: If damaged when net door, door cannot be secured. The tie down positions in the container are provided for the securing of items over 150 kg by the use of cargo straps. If they are damaged they cannot do this important function properly, and if net door is installed, the door cannot be secured.
page 10 BASE TIE-DOWN No clogging with dirt or other contaminants Even a small amount of dirt in a seat track makes it impossible to correctly install a 2-stud fi tting. NOTE: If damaged when net door, door cannot be secured. The tie down positions in the container are provided for the securing of items over 150 kg by the use of cargo straps. If they are damaged they cannot do this important function properly, and if net door is installed, the door cannot be secured.
page 11 BASE FASTENER No more than 3 broken, loose or missing rivets per edge rail No less than 12 inch / 300 mm between broken, loose or missing rivets >300mm <300mm With too many or too close missing rivets the container is not airworthy. If the base sheet becomes detached from the edge rail at any place the container will be very diffi cult to move in the aircraft roller system.
page 12! BASE CORNER No deformed, broken or missing corner connections With missing or broken corners the container is not airworthy. A missing or damaged corner can easily damage the aircraft hold system and also prevent loading the container into the aircraft.
page 13 FABRIC DOOR CURTAIN No more than 2 inch / 50 mm sized cuts/holes/scuffed areas (up to 2 ea.), located minimum 4 inches / 100 mm apart and from curtain edges, webbing, straps and any hardware 100mm <50mm 100mm >50mm >50mm 100mm 100mm The condition of the fabric door is most important to the containers total airworthiness. With too much damage the door is not airworthy. If a damaged door is used it may fall open or break at any time spilling contents inside the aircraft cargo hold during fl ight.
page 14 FABRIC DOOR LOCK No broken, loose or missing hardware/locks, velcro shall function properly Door locks are a vital part of safe operation of the door. With a faulty door lock the container is not airworthy. If a damaged door is used it may fall open or break at any time spilling contents inside the aircraft cargo hold during fl ight.
page 15 FABRIC DOOR LOCK No broken, loose or missing hardware/locks, velcro shall function properly The Velcro straps on a door may have to take a very high load under some fl ight situations. With damaged Velcro the container is not airworthy. If a door with a damaged Velcro strap is used it may fall open or break at any time spilling contents inside the aircraft cargo hold during fl ight.
page 16 FABRIC DOOR WEBBING No damaged/worn-out restraint straps No damaged/missing stitching The webbing on doors provides important strength. With damaged webbing the container is not airworthy. If a door with a damaged webbing is used it may fall open or break at any time spilling contents inside the aircraft cargo hold during fl ight.
page 17 PANEL SHEET No more than 2 holes/cracks per sheet with no more than 8 inch / 200 mm size No less than 4 inch / 100 mm between holes/cracks No tears/holes within 2 inch / 50 mm of rivets >100mm >50mm >100mm >100mm >200mm <200mm 50mm 50mm <50mm A tear in a panel sheet greatly reduces the strength of the container. With too many or too large or too close together tears the container is no longer airworthy. Torn panels weaken the container, can cause damage to the aircraft holds, the container contents and also injure operators.
page 18 PANEL EXTRUSION No more than 1 inch / 25 mm sized crack in any direction, no more than 1 per extrusion >25mm <25mm >25mm >25mm Extrusions are a critical part of the container strength, if damaged beyond the limits the container will no longer be airworthy. A container with a cracked extrusion is may change shape when loaded and can then scrape the inside of the aircraft hold causing expensive damage.
page 19 PANEL EXTRUSION No broken or crushed extrusions No defl ection outside allowable contour Extrusions give the container its strength, if they are cracked or crushed the container is no longer airworthy. A container having a distorted shape can easily damage the inside of the aircraft cargo hold.
page 20 PANEL FASTENERS (RIVETS) No more than 1 broken, loose or missing fasteners (rivets) per extrusion length No missing fasteners on door strap brackets, gussets or tie down brackets Too many missing fasteners can seriously weaken the container making it no longer airworthy.
page 21! CORNER CONNECTS GUSSET No broken, cracked, bent, loose or missing corner gussets Gussets provide much needed strength to the container. With broken or missing gussets the container will no longer be airworthy. Although gussets are small they are vital to the strength of the container. A bent, broken or missing gusset can weaken the container allowing it to touch the sides of the aircraft hold.
page 22 OTHERS WEBBING ULD MAY NOT BE USED IF ANY OF THE CONDITIONS BELOW ARE EXCEEDED No damaged, worn/out or missing pull-straps (1000 lbs / 454 kg capacity for operation, not required for airworthiness) The handstraps are not a part of the container airworthiness but if they break during use a person can be easily injured. Using a damaged handstrap during handling can easily cause injury to an operator if it breaks during use.
