3 Singapore ranks FOURTH in Global Destinations Cities Index 2013 According to Mastercard s global destination city ranking by international visitor arrivals, Singapore was the fourth most popular destination city in This puts Singapore ahead of other Asian cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo and Taipei. Singapore's popularity is in part due to the many new tourist attractions that were launched over the past three years, such as Resorts World Sentosa, Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and the River Safari. In terms of fastest-growing air travel connectivity, Singapore ranks third ahead of Seoul, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. In terms of international overnight visitor spend, Singapore ranks fifth, ahead of Tokyo, Seoul and Dubai. Overall, the top three destinations cities by international arrivals in 2013 are Bangkok, London and Paris. Carnival Corporation Opens Regional Office in Singapore Cruising in Asia is set to grow with the opening of Carnival Corporation s regional unit in Singapore on 3 May Riding on the projection that the Asia cruise market will grow to 3.7 million by 2017, this new regional unit, Carnival Asia, will oversee the company s expansion into Asia. Chairman of Carnival Asia, Mr Pier Luigi Foschi said We would like our share of Asia to be the same as our share of the market worldwide, which is 50 per cent. Today, the majority of Asian cruise passengers sail into Alaska or Europe. As the largest cruise company in the world, Carnival Corporation, is planning to change this by developing regional cruising. Carnival Asia s opening in Singapore also signals the company s interest in this region. Mr Foschi said, We believe Singapore is going to be a good hub for year-round cruising. If you want to station ships in Asia, you need customers throughout the year. Singapore has good surroundings, stable weather conditions through the year and solid infrastructure. Our success will be in bringing people from North Asia to Singapore through fly-cruise programmes when we re not able to send ships in North Asia because of the climate conditions, e.g., rough seas. As part of its expansion strategy for the region, Carnival Corporation s brands, Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises, have been expanding its operations in Singapore. Most recently, Costa Cruises doubled its capacity in Singapore with sailings by Costa Atlantica and Costa Victoria. Costa Atlantica made its maiden voyage from Singapore to the region over May-June 2013, offering cruises from Singapore to Malacca and Penang for three-night journeys, as well as four-night trips to Phuket and Langkawi. From November 2014, Princess Cruises will also be basing its Sapphire Princess in Singapore, with cruises round South East Asia. Source: TTG Asia CHANGI INSIGHT Issue 14 3

4 F EATURE STORY Singapore-Indonesia Traffic Poised for Strong Growth Indonesia is Southeast Asia s largest market by a wide margin, and has emerged as one of the most dynamic and biggest growth markets in the world. - Centre for Pacific Aviation, World Aviation Yearbook 2013 (Southeast Asia) A Major Surge in Singapore-indonesia seat capacity Indonesia was Changi Airport s largest market in 2012 with 6.8 million passengers travelling between the two countries. Singapore is currently the largest source of visitor arrivals into Indonesia. Likewise, Indonesia is Singapore s largest source of foreign visitors. For the 12-month period ending September 2012, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) recorded approximately 2.75 million Indonesian visitor arrivals into Singapore, representing an 8% year-on-year increase. In the other direction, Singaporean visitor arrivals into Indonesia registered 1.27 million in 2012, a 1.8% growth year-on-year. Changi Airport is currently connected to 14 metro cities and emerging cities in Indonesia with a total one-way weekly seat capacity of more than 90,000, making Changi the leading Asian hub for travels to Indonesia in terms of seat capacity. In particular, Singapore-Jakarta is amongst the world s top few densest international routes with one-way weekly seat capacity amounting to almost 50,000. Indonesia Market Outlook Indonesia is an archipelagic nation comprising of more than 17,000 islands spanning a land mass of over 113,700 square miles. Today, Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world with over 238 million people. Air connectivity is hence an important pillar in connecting people, businesses and resources across the country and with the rest of the global economy. According to a 2012 Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Study, Indonesia is poised to become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world with an expected annual growth rate of 6.4% over the next five years. At the same time, a large portion of the population is also expected to enter the middle-class and affluent consumers (MAC) socioeconomic category. The MAC population, currently estimated at 74 million, is expected to double to 141 million by BCG expects Indonesia outbound travel to be a US$30 billion market in 2020 as this group ramps up their spending and concomitantly, demand for air travel. As Indonesia s economy continues to expand, the need for aviation has become even more imperative to further steer the economy to a new growth trajectory. Today, Indonesia is already the largest aviation market in ASEAN. With its aviation market surging, Indonesia presents tremendous opportunities for airlines. 5 Singapore-Indonesia will soon see a major surge in capacity from the newly expanded air services agreement between the two countries. The expanded agreement, that took place earlier this year, was a major breakthrough and provided the needed space for growth by both Singapore and Indonesian carriers. Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia AirAsia, Mandala Airlines, SilkAir, Singapore Airlines and Tigerair have confirmed incremental frequencies between Singapore and eight Indonesian points Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung, Makassar, Semarang and Yogjakarta. This would provide for a significant expansion in seat capacity of up to 40% by the end of the Northern Summer 2013 season. (More details on the new Singapore-Indonesia services and frequency changes can be found on Page 9 of this issue of Changi Insight.) The additional capacity has come at a highly opportune time, given Indonesia s rapid economic growth and both countries strong leisure and business relevance to each other. As Singapore and Indonesian carriers materialize their aggressive plans to tap traffic between the two countries, foreign carriers can also benefit from it by partnering these airlines and using Changi Airport as a gateway to access burgeoning Indonesia. Changi Airport s Efforts to Drive Singapore-Indonesia Passenger Traffic At Changi, we see ourselves as enablers of businesses. Changi Airport Group (CAG) works closely with airline partners, travel agents and national tourism bodies to sustain and build up passenger demand on the Singapore-Indonesian routes. In addition to facilitating continued growth of passenger traffic between Singapore and Indonesia from existing routes, Changi aspires to expand Singapore s connectivity to Indonesia. Some of the other potential Indonesian cities which Changi hopes to establish direct air links with in the foreseeable future include Banda Aceh in Sumatra, as well as Pontianak and Banjarmasin in Kalimantan. CAG firmly believes that these air links will help forge closer bilateral tourism and business ties, and support the growth of Indonesia s economy. CAG welcomes new proposals from airlines and travel partners in growing passenger traffic flow between Singapore and Indonesia, and stands ready to partner them. 8 f irst person A LONG-standing PARTNERSHIP WITH BRITISH AIRWAYS An exclusive interview with Mr Robert Williams, Regional Commercial Manager, South East Asia, British Airways British Airways is no stranger to Singapore. Having commenced services to Singapore in Dec 1933, are you able to share some highlights of this 80-year history? We are indeed no stranger to Singapore, having started flying here all the way back in 1933 as Imperial Airways. Over the years, we have seen our presence and our popularity grow exponentially in Singapore. One of the key highlights in the past eight decades happened on December 9, 1977, when British Airways launched Concorde services to Singapore. This was truly a momentous moment in our history. Then in May 2000, Singapore and British Airways played an important part in London s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Prime Minister then, Tony Blair, signed a British Airways Boeing 747 in support of the bid. We collected over 100,000 signatures on the aircraft that would carry the bid team to Singapore for the vote by the International Olympic Committee. And London won! Throughout the years, many important people have travelled to Singapore on British Airways too. Just last September, for example, we were honoured to have the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on board when they came here on a tour to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. We ve celebrated 80 years of flying in some other parts of the world in the last few years and if these are anything to go by them, you can surely look forward to some exciting celebrations here in What part do you see Changi playing in British Airways' sustained growth in the region? We ve made no secret about plans to grow in Asia over the next few years and have launched some new and exciting routes from London recently - Seoul and Colombo - as well as the Chengdu in September. Singapore is not only a destination for our customers, but also a connecting point from Singapore to Sydney. This gives Changi the added importance of being the airport where we connect and transfer passengers on our longest flights. It has been about half a year since you came to Singapore from London. How have you been adapting to your current role and life in Singapore? Taking on this new role has been a great opportunity and privilege for me. I previously worked as our commercial manager in the Benelux region and so know what it s like to be running the activities of an airline away from home. However, this is my first time living and working in Asia. It coincides with an exciting time for British Airways in Southeast Asia, so has been really fantastic. Mr Robert Williams Singapore is not only a destination for our customers, but also a connecting point from Singapore to Sydney. This gives Changi the added importance of being the airport where we connect and transfer passengers on our longest flights. I must say that Singapore is an incredibly easy place to adapt to. Things just work well here! I love how Singapore is such a melting pot of different cultures and offers the old combined with the new all in such a small area. I find that a small area and fast and efficient transport links allows the gift of time. You can work long hours and still find plenty of time in the day for sports and relaxation. A big bonus of living here is how easy it is to get to and from Changi Airport and how many flights there are to places near and far. I m definitely taking advantage of that to travel around the region at weekends. Where is your favourite spot at Changi Airport? Naturally, it is the British Airways lounge in Terminal One. It s a very warm and stylish oasis for our customers to relax, work and refresh themselves in before and of course between flights. Aside from our lounge, I also love the huge array of shops, where you can get everything from a t-shirt or toothpaste to expensive watches and high fashion, all at high street prices. In fact, I often go to Changi early to get my shopping done. And of course the Kinetic Rain sculpture which I continue to be captivated every time I am in Terminal 1! 8 CHANGI INSIGHT Issue 14

10 A ir cargo CHANGI AIRLINE AWARDS 2013 FEDEX EXPRESS NAMED CHANGI S PARTNER OF THE YEAR 2013 Winners of Changi Airline Awards 2013 FedEx Managing Director, Mr Khoo Seng Thiam and Minister for Transport Mr Lui Tuck Yew Changi Airport Group (CAG) honoured Changi s top airline partners on 7 May at the Changi Airline Awards The annual awards event, into its eighth year, was held at the Regent Hotel and graced by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport. More than 20 awards were presented to the airline community for contributing to Changi Airport s traffic growth in 2012 and its development as a vibrant and world-class air hub. In his address at the event, Mr Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of CAG, highlighted the strides that Changi Airport has taken since the first Changi Airline Awards in 2005 and attributed the success to Changi s airline partners. He added that CAG is committed to the vision of Changi Airport being a top global air hub and will continue to dedicate resources to ensure its success. This year s awards were presented in six main categories which include Top airlines by passenger and cargo carriage; Strongest growing carriers for passengers and cargo; Best Airline Marketing and Partner of the Year. This year s Partner of the Year award was presented to FedEx Express, in recognition of its strong partnership with CAG to grow and strengthen Changi Airport's air hub status, as well as to enhance Changi s express cargo handling capability and capacity. FedEx Express collaborated extensively with CAG in recent years to strengthen Changi s position as a regional air cargo hub. In July 2010, leveraging on the growth of the Singapore market, FedEx deployed its newest aircraft type B777F to Changi Airport, increasing weekly capacity from Singapore to its Memphis Super Hub by 25%. In April 2011, CAG and FedEx announced the development of FedEx s South Pacific Regional Hub at Changi Airport which was completed in October 2012, marking the most significant milestone in the partnership between CAG and FedEx. The 282,700 square feet hub is the first and only express transportation facility in Singapore and the largest FedEx consolidated facility in Asia Pacific that houses air, ground, and clearance operations under one roof. The S$97-million South Pacific Regional Hub is FedEx s largest investment in Singapore since The 282,700 square feet hub is the first and only express transportation facility in Singapore and the largest FedEx consolidated facility in Asia Pacific that houses air, ground, and clearance operations under one roof. its establishment here in CAG and FedEx, together with several government agencies, Economic Development Board (EDB), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), JTC Corporation (JTC), Airport Police Division and Singapore Customs, worked closely on the master planning and design of the hub to ensure the seamless connectivity between all FedEx contact points. To support FedEx s operations, CAG constructed two new parking bays next to the FedEx facility to reduce the total time needed for a container to be offloaded from the aircraft to the sort belt. This process now takes a mere four minutes, up to five times faster than before. CAG also worked closely with FedEx to ensure that its 210 vehicles are able to leave the hub smoothly during the morning peak hour. FedEx, as the world s largest express transportation company with delivery capabilities to more than 220 countries and territories, has enhanced Changi s connectivity with its 34 weekly flights in and out of Singapore to nine destinations. This is the highest number of dedicated flights for any international express company operating its own flights to Asian and US destinations. More importantly, FedEx uses Singapore as the transshipment point for its Asia Pacific shipments in and out of Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asian countries. This enabled Changi Airport s overall express tonnage to grow by 12% in The successful partnership between CAG and FedEx has also enhanced Changi Airport s air hub status and position Singapore as the region s leading express hub over the years. CAG values FedEx as an important business partner and will continue to support FedEx s growth at Changi Airport in the future. CAG extends our heartiest congratulations to all award winners at Changi Airline Awards 2013! The strong and enduring partnership with our airline partners remains the recipe for Changi Airport s continued success and we look forward to honouring and celebrating further success and achievements of our airline partners at Changi Airline Awards CHANGI INSIGHT Issue 14
