A light breeze moved the leaves of the trees that shaded our grassy picnic area. Perfect soaring weather. All the lift we wanted. We could stay up for as long as we wanted. 7 members went soaring. We had a drawing and Kent s wife Julie won a ride in Sean Franke s open class glider. It s the F-15 of gliders. We all came back from our flights with big grins on our faces. It is very addicting. I really want to go again soon. We will take more people next time. It is a perfect way to spend the day. Warner Springs Glider Port. Final approach to runway 8. Cable joins the family tree of pilots with his first SOLO flight in his Piper Warrior at the airport which bears his namesake. Curtis, age 26, like his father before him, is the hard working owner/manager of Foothill Aircraft Sales and Service, Inc. 4 Yankee Raiders Ride Again! October 6, 2009 CAF members make the annual trip to Midland Texas (Redneck Mecca) for the CAF Airsho. The usual suspects rendezvous at Cliff and Barbara Heathcoats airport, VV1, in Lucerne Valley, Tuesday night, for secret libations and the exchange of exaggerated hangar intercourse (protected of course) (ask your mommy). The Cable gaggle was joined by the Riverside gaggle that first night in the desert, then traveled together for the rest of the trip. Kind of like a traveling TFR. Can you picture what this formation must have looked like? The Antonov AN2 being swarmed across the Southwest by the PT-22, the Fokker, the Wingeal, the C172, C175, L-4, L-5, Piper Arrow, Navion and a guest appearance by the US Customs Helicopter! You could not write this script. If they had filed a flight plan, Homeland Security would have gone from Orange to Red Alert! The population of Dell City was so confused, they had a civil defense drill and went into shelters. (They may still be there now). After eating and drinking themselves into history, this ragtag posse of aero-confusion hoisted themselves into the air Wednesday morning, departing for unfamiliar, hostile territory. What lay ahead was the merciless desert and foreign outposts slithering with unsavory characters, scorpions, Gila monsters and local color. If you have made this trip and survived, you may have heard of the likes of Blythe, Buckeye, Marana, Cochise, Deming, Tucson, Dona Ana, Dell City, Wink, and finally Midland Texas. If you have never heard of these tropical paradises, then you ain t missed nutin! So, don t read any further, and don t bother thinking of all the fun you missed. Cableites have been busy with their projects; traveled to the far reaches of the world; joined together in the proverbial search for a fun place to fly for breakfast, brunch, or dinner; and taken that terrifying step into the wild blue yonder, trusting that their many hours of love and labor will hold together until they touch down again. As The Beacon Turns Adventures of Fly Aweigh After a very busy few days in Marina del Rey, we have finally made it to the first official destination in our upcoming ever-so-looselystructured itinerary, the place where we really begin the adventure -- the starting point of the Baja Ha Ha, San Diego. Just pulled in tonight, after a 26-hour trip from Marina del Rey. Follow along with Alison and Allan on their Blog site Stephen Deutsch soloed Sept 29. Then started out on a major adventure on his bicycle. He arrived in Sydney, Australia October So far he has had a great ride and stayed in some awesome beach places. He leaves for Singapore on Christmas day (3 weeks there) then either to Thailand or Japan & Korea for 3 weeks. He will be back in Calif in February.
