HELPING HANDS SAFARI Get to know the culture and people while on safari by lending a helping hand for the communities that support your vacation or travel experience. Gibb s Farm offers different opportunities to get involved, including: School Desk and Furniture Carpentry Contribute a few afternoons working alongside our farm carpenters to construct school furniture, distributed through the Karatu Education Fund. At schools in the area, three to four children typically share one desk, so new furniture is always appreciated. Please may we L O D G E T O R I M WA L K I N G S A FA R I come again? -- JOHN & SUE HOOPER Gibb s Farm s CRATER RIM WALK takes you off the beaten path for a wonderful wilderness experience. The walking safari is between 5-7 hours depending on your fitness and your expectations are bound to be exceeded. If you have a spirit for adventure and a love of wildlife and untamed wilderness, this experience is for you! A naturalist will accompany you from Gibb s Farm with binoculars and a keen sense of knowledge to share. A ranger will join you from Ngorongoro Conservation area and carry a rifle as a precautionary measure for your safety whilst on safari. Most walkers will encounter elephant, cape buffalo, bush pig and a number of other animals along the way as well as an abundant forest of plant and tree life. With over 200 species on the Gibb s Farm bird list, you are bound to see a wide variety of east-african birds. The walking safari starts at Gibb s Farm, which lies at 1,700 metres (5,500 feet) above sea level. We hike up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, which lies at 2,300 metres (7,500 feet) where our vehicle will meet you with a well-earned, delicious picnic lunch and refreshments before returning you to Gibb s Farm. The altitude and duration of the trek requires you to be in good physical condition. We recommend the following gear for your walking safari: good footwear, long pants, a long sleeve shirt, a light fleece pullover and/or windbreaker, small daypack for your 2 litres of water, a good sun hat, suncreen and insect repellant. Other things you may want to bring include a camera, binoculars and sunglasses. Walking sticks will be provided by your guide. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: This is a full day walking safari (5-7 hours). Guests must be in good physical condition. Minimum age is 15 years. Cost: $420 for solo walker, or $260 per person (minimum 2 guests) and $140 per additional guest thereafter. This includes - guided walk, transfer from the crater back to the farm, park fees, water and snacks. Availability is subject to track and weather conditions and is not available at all during the months of March to June due to high rainfall. A maximum of 6 guests can be accommodated per walk. MORNING BIRD CENSUS Gibb s Farm is home to over 200 species of birds each season, and each year a few new ones are observed and recorded. Avid birders are encouraged to join our naturalists for an early walk around the farm to observe morning birdlife for census and behaviour, and contribute to any new sightings. Ask at reception for our Bird List. BREAD MAKING Join us for our early morning bread making ritual. What could be more fun than baking bread, and of course sampling it hot from the oven? VEGETABLE HARVESTING Join in the laughter and banter as the chefs go about their daily ritual of harvesting fresh organic produce from our vegetable garden, to be enjoyed at lunch or dinner time. COFFEE ROASTING Experience traditional coffee cultivation and roasting, just as it has been done for generations. Enjoy the aroma and taste of a cup of wonderful organic, fresh-roasted Arabica coffee each day at the main lodge. AFTERNOON TEA Indulge in the simple pleasure of afternoon tea in the garden in the main lodge. Enjoy Gibb s Farm organic Arabica coffee and teas, accompanied by freshly baked cakes and tea biscuits. GARDEN SUNSET As the African sun descends into the valley, enjoy the spectacular view of the golden rays spilling over the carefully cultivated rows of coffee and the East African valley beyond. TEMBO FIRE The evening begins here for many guests, with a glorious sunset accompanied by a refreshing drink. 9 FARM WALKS Gibb s Farm is an amazing place. The self-sufficient approach and working with the local community is a refreshing change. --THE NORMANS COMPLIMENTARY WALKS AROUND THE FARM There is perhaps nothing grander than the peace and solitude of a walk or nature outing to restore one s well-being and discover the wonders of a new environment. Gibb s Farm offers many different walks, depending upon your interests and activity level. All activities can be booked at reception with all departure times on request. FARM WALK Experience a real working farm as you explore our organic 10-acre fruit and vegetable gardens and 30-acre coffee fields. Try your hand at milking a cow and learn about our sustainable farming methods. GARDEN WALK Stroll through eight historic gardens with our horticulturist who supervises the care of hundreds of species of flora and who tends to the aromatic herb gardens. It is a tour through a natural history museum; many plants have been here since 1959, when Margaret Gibb, an avid gardener, planted the first seeds. This 40-minute leisurely walk is truly a breath of fresh air. INDIGENOUS MEDICINAL WALK Indigenous Maasai healers lead you through the Ngorongoro Forest, where you will hear about Olemoran, Olaiyapiyap and Osinoni just a few of over 20 medicinal plants described on the walk. Commonly used in Tanzania to treat health problems, these and other herbal medicines are used at Gibb s Farm. NGORONGORO FOREST WALK A Gibb s Farm naturalist is your guide for this tranquil two-hour walk through the farm and into the Ngorongoro Forest. Your senses will come alive with the sights and sounds of farm life and the flora and fauna of the forest. VILLAGE WALK This leisurely two-hour walk around our neighbouring village of Tloma provides a personal look at Tanzanian village life.
