3 Theme III: Longer Term, Slow-onset Disasters (BACC, Delegates Hall) Longer term, slow-onset disasters are only poorly perceived or addressed in Egypt. Three of these major risks are desertification, increasing water scarcity, and sea level rise. This last is becoming more appreciated as a growing threat with differential impacts on many regions and coastlines. 4 Theme IV: Vulnerable Deltas (BACC, Delegates Hall) Egypt s second city, Alexandria, is only about two meters above sea level, and is a linear city strung along the coastline of the Mediterranean and thus very susceptible to storm surges and floods. In addition, Egypt s delta is remarkably flat and contains many high density settlements in the midst of some of the most fertile lands in Egypt. Addressing Sea-level Rise is particularly important in this context.
