2 ISSAQUAH CITY PROFILE Named in 2011 as one of the Best Towns in the U.S. by Outside Magazine, Issaquah is a terrific place to live and conduct business. It is a community of 30,000+ residents, and is conveniently located off the I-90 corridor, just 16 miles east of Seattle. Issaquah is a city dedicated to local traditions, hometown values, and award-winning neighborhoods. Also known as the Trailhead City, Issaquah is in a prime location to explore the best of the great northwest because the city is centered within the Issaquah Alps (Cougar, Squak and Tiger Mountains). The lure of the clean mountain air and beautiful scenery attracts countless outdoor enthusiasts, hikers and even paragliders to Issaquah. The city is home to a Saturday farmers market, live theatre performances and a seasonal ArtWalk. In addition, the salmon hatchery and Cougar Mountain Zoological Park attract regional visitors. Every October, more than 150,000 people also travel to Issaquah for the annual Salmon Days festival. Because of its proximity to Bellevue and Seattle, Issaquah is a prime business location. 4 ISSAQUAH Great Schools Lake Washington School District (LWSD) is located between Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains, to the east of Seattle. Covering 76 square miles, LWSD is the public school district for the cities of Kirkland and Redmond, as well as about half of Sammamish. On the north end of the district, some Bothell and Woodinville residents also attend these schools. 5 ISSAQUAH Community Attractions The neighboring highlands are called the Issaquah Alps and feature hiking trails and outdoor activity throughout the three mountains surrounding Issaquah: Tiger Mountain, Cougar Mountain, and Squak Mountain. Issaquah is home to a premiere site where people fly paragliders and hang gliders from the heights of Tiger Mountain. The Village Theatre is a leading producer of musical theatre in the Pacific Northwest. Producing entertaining, quality productions since 1979, Village Theatre has grown into one of the region s best-attended professional theatres, with over 18,000 subscribers. The Village Theatre also takes pride in nurturing tomorrow s audiences through its youth education programs, serving over 63,000 young people, families, and schools annually. Salmon Days is a two-day award-winning festival held in Issaquah on the first full weekend of October each year. It is initiated by a parade, celebrating the return of the salmon to their birth-waters, and praises Issaquah s history, culture, and ethnic diversity. This free festival encompasses several arts and crafts conventions, attracting many Northwest artists. There are four stages of entertainment. Sporting events include 5 km/10 km runs (and a 3 km run for kids), a fencing invitational, bike rides, and a golf tournament. A Field of Fun, providing free entertainment for children of all ages, is available thanks to the many festival sponsors. The 2005 register revealed over 400,000 people attended the event. The Cougar Mountain Zoo is located on the north slope of Cougar Mountain, just to the west of Issaquah. The 8-acre zoo offers a glimpse at many endangered species from across the globe. The Issaquah Salmon Hatchery was built in 1936 under the federal Works Project Administration. It is located on the Issaquah Creek within the city limits of Issaquah and is the Department of Fish and Wildlife s most visited hatchery, with an estimated 350,000 visitors a year. Gilman Village is a specialty shopping center created from rescued buildings dating back to the origins of the Issaquah community. The 40-plus shops and restaurants that make up Gilman Village became one of Puget Sound s best known and most distinctive shopping destinations.
